OTHERWORLDLY VISION To create a LEGACY, there must be no limits placed on IMAGINATION. In this EXCLUSIVE interview, ahead of the public launch, the Head Designer of COACHBUILD at ROLLS-ROYCE reveals the highly anticipated NEW COMMISSION, BOAT TAIL, marking a BOLD NEW CHAPTER in the story of Rolls-Royce

hen it comes to true luxury, few houses or brands stir the imagination quite like Rolls-Royce. For more than a century, the marque has pushed the boundaries of possibility to create superlative motor cars which epitomise both audacious ambition and astonishing achievement. Coachbuild – Rolls-Royce’s ambitious and personal statements of true luxury – takes this uncompromising characteristic of the marque’s DNA even further. Creating true one-off motor cars, designed in partnership with a commissioning patron, Coachbuild tells the story both of Rolls-Royce and the patron themselves to create a unifying legacy. It was back in 2017 on the shores of Lake Como that Rolls-Royce unveiled their last Coachbuild motor car – Sweptail. At the time, it set a new gold standard for bespoke personalisation and was the catalyst for a conversation between a client and Alex Innes, the Head Designer of Coachbuild at Rolls-Royce. “The statement that was made to me on the shores of Lake Como was ‘show me something

that has never been seen before,’” says Innes. Now, that request has been realised with Boat Tail, a truly bespoke four-seater open top, and the first of three utterly unique creations is exclusively revealed in these pages. “We had a cohort of three exceptional individuals with a great affection for the brand who shared an ambition to create something extraordinary. Moreover, they wanted to be part of commissioning the future chapter of Rolls-Royce,” says Innes. The commissions coincided with an ambition Innes and his colleagues shared of realising a modern interpretation of the Boat Tail body style from the late 1920s and early 1930s – “the golden age of Coachbuilding,” says Innes. “The design mainly centred on the Phantom II chassis – a personal favourite of mine,” he adds. But while Innes and his team took cues from the past, the commissioning patrons agreed that this should not be an historical homage but a thoroughly modern interpretation. It was, in fact, the J Class yacht which Innes says was the

“spiritual guidance” for the project. “The J Class yacht is, for me, one of the most achingly beautiful forms that exists in the world,” he says. “It was also the pursuit of reduction which the J Class represented that inspired us to create a certain level of simplicity with the form for Boat Tail.” The car’s body shape has an inherent sense of motion “which can only be made possible because it is a handmade car,” says Innes. “It is almost as if it were a motor launch just moving away under power and rising up out of the water.” For the first time in Rolls-Royce’s history, the body colour of the car has been taken down onto the iconic Pantheon Grille. “This allows it to become the structure of the car, rather than an appliqué, and an integral element as to the personality of the car, while losing none of the familiar Rolls-Royce authority.” Indeed, Boat Tail is full of surprises which will delight and astonish in equal measure. The rear deck of the car mimics the sun deck of a yacht and is finished with a wooden veneer, inlaid with handpolished stainless steel pinstripes, and hides a unique proposition below. To create a magnificent sense of occasion, the rear deck opens with a meticulously engineered butterf ly motion, sliding out to an inclination of 15° “as if the car were offering its contents to you, like a waiter at a fine restaurant,” says Innes. It enables the car to ‘host’ the patron, presenting a small meal and a glass of perfectly chilled Champagne (in this particular edition, Armand de Brignac served at 6°C.) “The car itself becomes the destination,” says Innes. Boat Tail is provisioned with cutlery and cold food storage boxes by Cristofel. Innes and his team also developed the hallmark Rolls-Royce umbrella further by designing a unique parasol which

extends over the rear deck – “a true feat of engineering,” he says. Each creation challenged Innes and his colleagues to “exceed the constraints of the rational world,” he says, only half joking. In this first creation, the client’s passion for horology was honoured with a unique timepiece, created with Swiss watch purveyor Bovet, which fits into the fascia of the car itself. The timepiece has a tourbillon mechanical movement which has never been featured in a moving car before, “with good reason! ” Innes laughs. Further obstacles included the inherent vibration and magnetism in the cockpit, “but the client was intent that we should overcome this, and there ensued a near three-and-a-half-year development process with Bovet to get this element to work.” The client also requested that he and his wife should be able to remove their timepieces from their wrists when driving the car and place them into the fascia of the car, a feature unique to this creation. Each client was involved in the process at every stage, seeing and influencing the design as it developed from a pencil sketch to a fullsize clay model until their car itself was complete. “They were offered a privileged glimpse into a unique part of the marque that is usually cordoned off,” says Innes. For the commissioning patron of this first Boat Tail creation, the experience represents “the culmination of a lifetime of work,” says Innes. “This client has described it to me as being a once-in-a-lifetime moment; it is a direct marker of their success and will underline their legacy forevermore.” In Boat Tail, Rolls-Royce redefines bespoke personalisation, masterfully telling a unique story of the past, present and future – not just for the commissioning patron, but for the marque itself. “It’s not about what the car can do, it’s about what it represents,” says Innes. “The future of luxury is personal.”

hile Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos battle it out in the new race for space travel, there are pioneering adventures to be found closer to home. Underwater travel is opening up to offer astonishing and elemental experiences for those seeking a new perspective. Personal submarines may not be a prerequisite superyacht toy, but there are few to rival the luxury of the new limited edition Project Neptune, the spectacular result of a collaboration between Aston Martin and Triton Submarines. Developed in conjunction with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, who also developed the Aston Martin Valkyrie ‘hypercar’, the three-person Project Neptune is exceptionally agile, can reach depths of 499m and stay underwater for up to eight hours. W hile its sprint speed of f ive knots may be positively slow by A ston Martin standards, it is four times the acceleration of Triton’s f lagship 33 0 0 / 3 model. Project Neptune’s custom interior includes hand-stitched leather and carbonfibre trim, and Aston Martin’s in-house design team have conceived a range of three designer specifications. Bespoke options will also be available via Q by Aston Martin, the company’s customisation service. If a submersible toy isn’t enough, how about a superyacht submarine? Austrian company Migaloo calls its 165m M5 a “private submersible superyacht,” and it’s no exaggeration. Capable of staying submerged for several weeks, the M5 will have an acrylic pressure hull design—built to U.S. Navy submarine standards—with multiple MTU generators and lithium batteries. With room for two owners, 12 guests and 19 crew, for a total of 32 people, the M5 is the ultimate James Bond fantasy, with a helipad, a

garage for tenders and toys, a cinema room, gym, spa, wine cellar, library, several bars with windows to the sea, and a games room. If you want to explore the ocean’s depths further, the M5 has two minisubs, and when you resurface, you can relax using the outdoor pool and Jacuzzi as well as the beach club. And if the M5 isn’t quite big enough, the M7 extends to 280m. It’s not just superyachts and submarines taking underwater exploration to the next level. While underwater restaurants have become increasingly popular in the Caribbean, 'Under in Norway' became the world’s largest when it opened in April 2019. Designed by Oslo and New Yorkbased architecture firm Snøhetta, the 40-seater fine dining restaurant resembles a sunken concrete periscope, submerged on the craggy shoreline of Båly on Norway’s south coast. The 495-square-metre restaurant is fronted by a huge panoramic window that gives visitors an astonishing view of the marine life in the North Sea and the drama of the weather outside. The concrete of the monolithic structure has been left in its raw form to encourage algae and molluscs to make a home there, which in time will create an artificial mussel reef to help purify the water and naturally attract more marine life. Earlier this year, British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor opened the Underwater Museum of Cannes, a permanent installation beside Île Sainte-Marguerite. Featuring six large sculptures of fractured human faces based on portraits of local people, it is accessible by snorkelling or diving to encourage engagement with the sea and foster a sense of protection for it. Surely that is the ultimate challenge of the future?

he refit market has grown so much that it occupies its own segment in the whole yachting industry,” says York Ilgner, head of refit at Lürssen. That’s largely thanks to a fleet that is increasing in size and volume as well as number. “More and more of these yachts have been in use for five or more years and hence need to be adequately serviced and refitted,” explains Ilgner. But why do owners so often opt for a refit rather than a brand new purchase? The answer, says Ilgner, is often emotionallydriven. “The yacht becomes a member of the family in some ways. There are many memories connected to it, so it needs to be maintained and updated rather than replaced.” Trends in the wider industry and indeed wider society are – of course – influencing exactly what these updates are. “The worldwide trend to ‘think green’ has reached the yachting industry,” explains Ilgner. That can result in demand for modifications and more environmentally-friendly tech.

“Requests for propulsion upgrades to achieve higher speeds using higher power outputs have become fairly rare,” Ilgner says. “We invest a lot in research of alternative and greener solutions.” This growing environmental appreciation might also explain, to some extent, the increased Owner appetite for winter gardens, with palm trees, living walls and herb-growing popping up across more and more superyachts. Number one on the list, though, is a full paint job of the exterior. “This may not be a recent trend,” says Ilgner, “but it is quite obvious that more money is spent on top coating, teak decking, polishing of stainless steel, and maintenance of the outer appearance of a yacht, than other types of refit.” So what is Ilgner’s favourite refit to date? “There is not just one project,” he says. “Instead, it is the moment when the challenging period of a refit comes to an end and the Owner says, ‘good job!’ And, of course, there is nothing more rewarding than that same Owner coming back for a second refit.”

For the most part – or at least comparatively – sailing is a sustainable way to navigate the oceans, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. “We are looking at all options in the design, build and eventual running costs, to reduce potential carbon emissions,” says McKeon. The team is also looking at options including solar energy, wind milling regeneration and sail milling regeneration. “Soon we will

see hydrogen as a means of generating energy. And of course, the rapid development of battery technology is helping us find a more efficient way of developing and storing energy,” says McKeon. It’s all music to the ears of a generation and a growing audience who prioritise the environment. Many of McKeon’s yachts currently under construction are already making use of these sorts of innovations. “We have a 60m sailing sloop under construction which is due for launch in 2023 and we are also working on three other yachts in excess of 60m, all of which are making use of a number of green technology solutions to improve efficiency,” says McKeon. “We are seeing more interest from motor yacht clients preferring to be seen on sailing yachts, which certainly have a greener image.” Meanwhile, McKeon’s designs continue to win awards and acclaim on the racing circuit.“Missy recently came top of her class in the 2020 Antigua Superyacht Regatta,” he explains. “We are delighted with that.”

e all know that the future of the environment is under threat and depends upon us dramatically reducing our CO2 emissions – and soon. In fact, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is aiming for an average reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of at least 40% per vessel by 2030 compared with 2008. Ambitious targets indeed. So how can the superyacht market play its part? In short, with alternative fuels and electric power. “Several boat owners want to be frontrunners and prepare for sustainable technology in the future, and we help them explore their options,” says Niels de Vries, one the of the lead naval architects at C-Job, a partner of Ocean Independence. For a number of operational profiles, combining diesel electric, diesel direct and batteries can make CO2 emission savings of “between 5-10%” says de Vries. “It’s a step in the right direction, but without reconsidering energy sources and renewable power generation, energy saving alone is not enough to reach the IMO goals,” says de Vries. C-Job Naval Architects has been investigating alternative renewable fuels for a number of years. “In our view, liquid hydrogen and methanol are two highly potential renewable fuels for yachts for the coming decade,” de Vries says. “Batteries alone are not sufficiently suitable for long endurance. Depending on the hotel and propulsion load, the endurance would generally only be a few hours or a day at most, generally speaking.” Liquid hydrogen could “extend the autonomy that batteries could

not offer and keep relatively low fuel costs,” says de Vries. “However, it has its limitations as it still requires significantly more space than conventional fuel and is stored at 20 Kelvin (-253°C), so it’s currently rather impractical and very costly as an installation.” According to de Vries, methanol is relatively more expensive in terms of fuel production because it requires CO2 from the air and loses a third of the hydrogen in the synthesis, “but it saves a lot of volume compared to liquid hydrogen. That is the balance that needs to be found, weighing the value of volume on board against the cost of the fuel. Either way, these two fuels [liquid hydrogen and methanol] have high potential for the yacht sector.” While great progress has been made in energy saving with hybrid technology (Heesen’s project Electra being a fine example of the possibilities for greener superyachts), it will be “the application of these renewable fuels which will enable the significant reduction of harmful emissions,” says de Vries. “Therefore, these will be the research and development priorities for the coming decade.” C -Job’s close collaboration with Ocean Independence is “a wonderful opportunity to implement the latest technology in existing yachts to step towards reduction of harmful emissions by means of energy saving,” says de Vries. “Furthermore, we share a vision to fundamentally change energy storage and power generation on board to reach a significant reduction and eventually the elimination of harmful emissions.”
