T

here are few names as synonymous with refined elegance and craftsmanship as that of Giorgio Armani. Since founding his eponymous fashion label in 1975, Mr Armani – as he is always reverently addressed – has created an empire which now spans haute couture, ready-to-wear, beauty, homeware, interior design, hotels and restaurants, floristry and even chocolates. There is no lifestyle element, it seems, which cannot infinitely benefit from the Armani touch.

“It all stems from the drive to create a world which reflects my taste,” says Armani. “It’s a natural progression, or at least it was for me. First you dress the body then you dress the space inhabited by the body. Having furnished the space I also personalise it, exploring all the possibilities of an Armani label lifestyle.”

This year, the homeware arm of the Armani empire – Armani/ Casa – celebrates its 21st birthday, but its story really began back in 1982 when Armani designed a lamp for his company’s Milan offices.

Now known as the ‘Logo Lamp’, it became the Armani/ Casa logo and still forms an integral part of each collection. “I’m very fond of this piece; with its pure geometric shape, natural materials and colours, it symbolically encapsulates all the fundamental elements of my design philosophy,” he says.

Just as Armani reinvented the way clothes were made – deconstructing centuries-old methods of tailoring to create a fluid, modern and rarefied silhouette – so too has Armani/ Casa influenced the way we live. While the brand’s early designs were strongly linear, it has evolved into something softer.

“Over the years, however, I’ve discovered a certain softness, a taste for the artisan nature of material and, if you like, a toned-down, luxury frivolity which I now find are the key features of the collection,” says Armani. “Yet what truly emerges is the taste for the basic line which enhances the material. In this sense it is identical to my approach to clothes, in which it’s always the material which speaks, via the pared-down design.”

Armani established the Armani/ Casa Interior Design Studio in 2004, realising his vision for elegant living. Recent projects include the Armani/ Casa Moscow Residences, a complex of 26 luxury properties close to the State Tretyakov Gallery, and he is also redesigning his historic building on Madison Avenue, New York,

which will house not only the new Giorgio Armani boutique but also Residences by Armani/ Casa.

Armani’s expansion into hospitality with the launches of the Armani Hotels in Dubai in 2010 and in Milan in 2011 saw his vision distilled into service and setting.

How did he ensure that the Armani aesthetic was imbued in every element? “In the only way I can – fanatically checking all the smallest details, making sure that everything, from the furniture to the service, reflects my idea and my vision. I’m pleased with the result because what the hotels are offering is a luxury yet extremely discreet service, not at all ostentatious, made to measure for each person.”

Recently, Armani has also been designing interiors for yachts. “Designing yacht interiors represents the coming together of two great passions – on the one hand the sea and on the other the home as a space to be dressed,” says Armani. “A yacht is none other than a moving home on the water, a fusion of adventure and freedom. I very much like the technical limitations of this specific area of design, they stimulate creativity rather than inhibit it.”

The key to Armani’s staggering success as a creative polymath is undoubtedly his unique ability to articulate his very specific style in myriad ways and to continuously evolve: “The decision not to evolve is fatal in my opinion,” he says. “I would say that mine is a deeply humanist vision, and my work glorifies the person in that everything, from furniture to clothes, is designed to show them off and not to disguise them.”

The word ‘luxury’ is an easy word to attribute to Armani – both the brand and the man – and yet it is a term in danger of losing its potency, he says.

“There is much talk about luxury, possibly too much, at times even losing sight of its true meaning.

“For me, luxury is a personal concept and difficult to generalise; whatever makes you feel good is a luxury to me and is not necessarily something expensive. It can be a piece of furniture with maximum careful crafting and, likewise, having time available to spend with the ones you love. As a man, and businessperson, I think that the utmost in luxury is represented by freedom and independence. We’re realising this now more than ever.”

A noticeable outcome of this far more sustainable form of farming is that the natural freshness of the wines is enhanced.

The 2012 release was the first year that Cristal was made from 100% biodynamically farmed grapes, and it was met with great critical acclaim - as was the subsequent 2013 vintage. hen a superyacht is the ultimate realisation of ambition, the only limitation should be one’s imagination. But with the advent of bigger and better tenders and toys, even the largest superyachts are constrained by what they can carry without compromising on lifestyle. The solution? The specially commissioned support yacht.

“The support vessel solves a huge number of problems, no matter the size of your yacht,” says Nicholas Dean, Managing Partner at Ocean Independence. “You could have a 100-metre yacht and still find that you don’t have the room on board to accommodate the tender you want. If you have a support vessel, that problem is instantly solved.”

Typically 50 – 70 metres and with 15 – 18 knots capability, support vessels can fulfil any function a client wants for their lifestyle.

“It’s all about customising your lifestyle with your yachting,” says Dean. “We can enhance your experience ten-fold as there is so much available.” From adding more tenders and toys or facilities such as gyms, saunas and medical centres, to additional crew and staff accommodation, the support vessel is designed to offer the best possible lifestyle solutions with no requirement for compromise on the mothership.

There are other benefits where a support vessel adds to the ease and enjoyment of your cruise. Hosting a beach party? The support vessel can travel ahead to set it up

While support vessels have been in use for a number of years, the trend has picked up pace recently. “In the late 2000s there were one or two pioneers who decided they wanted a bigger selection of toys and lifestyle accessories,” says Dean. “Every activity generates a huge amount of kit on the yacht. This is the number one advantage that comes with having a support vessel, and is a big driver for clients choosing to commission one.”

hen a superyacht is the ultimate realisation of ambition, the only limitation should be one’s imagination. But with the advent of bigger and better tenders and toys, even the largest superyachts are constrained by what they can carry without compromising on lifestyle. The solution? The specially commissioned support yacht.

“The support vessel solves a huge number of problems, no matter the size of your yacht,” says Nicholas Dean, Managing Partner at Ocean Independence. “You could have a 100-metre yacht and still find that you don’t have the room on board to accommodate the tender you want. If you have a support vessel, that problem is instantly solved.”

Typically 50 – 70 metres and with 15 – 18 knots capability, support vessels can fulfil any function a client wants for their lifestyle.

This is the number one advantage that comes with having a support vessel, and is a big driver for clients choosing to commission one.”

ver a century of coachbuilt car making has created some extraordinary artistic endeavours which challenge the limitations of both technology and innovation. The romance and potency of these cars not only realises the dreams of the original commissioning patron, but generations of future collectors.

The legendary American motor racing enthusiast Willie K Vanderbilt threw down the gauntlet for pioneering car design in 1907. He commissioned 11 examples of perhaps the world's first ever supercar from Renault Frères for himself and ten friends. Despite still having spoked wooden wheels, the Renault 35/45 Vanderbilt Racer was capable of 70mph+, unheard of in 1907. Their design was based upon Renault's all-conquering Grand Prix car, albeit scaled down to make them far more refined and approachable for the private individual – a racing car that a gentleman could crank.

For a veteran pre-World War I car, its design is breathtakingly elegant. Enormously expensive, the 11 cars cost USD 150,000 in 1907, which equates to c. USD 1m per car today. Five of the original 11 examples survive today in museums and under private ownership, with the most recent sale being by Bonhams in 2020 where chassis number 8938 fetched USD 3.3m.

When Enzo Ferrari decided in 1953 to allow just five examples of the 375 M M to be built and sold only to patrons of his choosing, he created an automotive legend. The five cars were to become the 'Speciales', perhaps the most famous of which was chassis 0456A M,

commissioned by film director Roberto Rossellini as a wedding present for his wife, Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman. The gold paint too was a unique colour, aptly named ‘Grigio Ingrid.’ Earning itself the moniker ‘Dono d'amore’ – Gift of Love – today its whereabouts remain unknown, but it is believed to still be owned by former Microsoft President Jon Shirley, who last exhibited the car at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Described by the broadcaster and author James May as "a love letter to the 911", the Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer combines the classic aesthetic of the 964 generation of 911 with performance to match even the most powerful contemporary model. First commissioned in 2010, the Singer 911 is the antithesis of a production line vehicle; these are pieces of Porsche-f lavoured automotive art.
