MAYOR’S WELCOME

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the City of Cold Lake, and encourage you to explore everything our community has to offer.

Although it has many of the conveniences of a big city, Cold Lake is nestled on the shore of Alberta’s seventh largest lake. It is a stone’s throw from Cold Lake Provincial Park, and maintains much of its small town feel. We are home to world-class freshwater angling, a beautiful beach, quad and sled trails, a fantastic motocross track, and scenic landscapes all around.

While the opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in our region abound, our Council has also invested in the community’s recreational facilities to make sure all residents and visitors can access the activities they enjoy.

A lot of work has gone into Kinosoo Beach. Take the kids to the splash park, enjoy one of the many community events hosted at the beach, a game of beach volleyball or relax by the water. Kinosoo beach is often the focal point of our summer.

If team sports have brought you to Cold Lake, our irrigated sports fields allow all of the City’s teams to make the most of their season.

Our event arena, on the other hand, has proven a popular venue for hockey tournaments, concerts and tradeshows. The City’s Cenovus Wellness Centre staff are always available to help people meet their fitness goals and the CNRL Walking and Running track is open at no cost year round.

The Cold Lake Museum showcases our region’s proud past from the history and culture of Cold Lake First Nations and the Elizabeth Métis Settlement, to 4 Wing and the oil and gas industry.

The Cold Lake Marina is also a popular spot, not only for people heading out on the water to catch lake trout, walleye or pike, but it offers an excellent chance to take a walk along the pier, stop for a meal in a nearby restaurant, do some shopping by the lakeshore or take in one of our amazing fireworks displays.

Our vibrant business district in Cold Lake South also offers shoppers the chance to pick up the latest fashions, enjoy great meals, find great deals or spend an evening on the town.

Of course, our roots as a rural community are not forgotten and we have a strong Agricultural Society.

The “home of the volunteers,” our Ag Society is always busy planning the next Cold Lake Stampede, farmer’s market, horse riding clinic or bull riding show. Rodeo professionals from across North America come to compete, and the small town rodeo gives you the option of sitting comfortably in the bleachers, or getting up close to the action.

Whether you are a new resident or you’re stopping by for a visit, I’m positive it won’t take you long to realize what the locals have: Cold Lake is a beautiful place to play, and an even greater place to live.

In the winter there is skiing & snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, skating and curling. Cold Lake is home to one of the largest inland Marinas and Canada’s largest fighter base; it really is impressive when you see the CF-18 fighter jets flying overhead!

There is plenty to do with two first class recreation centers both boasting hockey rinks, weight rooms, walking tracks, courts, and rock walls. There are unique specialty shops, restaurants, franchises, and a diverse mix of activities that cater to the whole family.

Less than three hours northeast of Edmonton and 20 minutes west of the Saskatchewan border, Cold Lake is proud to be the “Heart of the Lakeland."

Several roads link to Cold Lake making the City easily accessible via Provincial Highway 28 from Edmonton and Highway 897 North from Lloydminster. Highway 55 runs east and south from Fort McMurray/Lac La Biche and west from Saskatchewan, providing access from many other urban communities. Cold Lake’s central location, makes it one of Northeastern Alberta’s major retail hubs.

OUR CITY’S NAMESAKE HAS BEEN KNOWN BY SEVERAL NAMES OVER THE YEARS.

It was first recorded on a 1790 Turnor map by the name of Coldwater Lake, but was called Big Fish Lake by the Chipewyan. Early fur traders and Cree called it Cold Water Lake before the name Cold Lake was settled on.

Each variation is appropriate as Cold Lake itself is known for its depth and for the cold water that is home to many large fish.

The abundance offered by the lake, and its surroundings, brought native settlements around the lake for hundreds of years. In the early 1900s, European settlers sought new lives in a harsh but rewarding wilderness. Hunting, trapping, fishing and, later, logging and farming would provide the area’s pioneers with their livelihoods.

In 1821, the Hudson’s Bay Company established the Beaver Crossing Trading Post on the shores of the Beaver River. The trading post was part of a network used to transport furs from the Lac La Biche area to the east, and played an important role in Canada’s early fur trade. The Village of Cold Lake became the area’s main trading centre.

In 1905 Europeans began arriving to settle in the area. While some settled with their families close to the Beaver River, many decided to make their homes closer to Cold Lake as there was an abundance of fish, wild game for hunting and trapping, and land suitable for farming and ranching.

Two settlements began to evolve: Beaver Crossing and Cold Lake. Over the next 15 years, the young community grew to include a school house, a missionary hospital and a general store (now Clark’s General Store and Eatery). By the mid-1920s, boasting a population of about 50 people, a Board of Trade was also established in Cold Lake. This institution would grow to become the Chamber of Commerce in 1964. The Board of Trade initiated the incorporation of the Village of Cold Lake in 1954 and the Chamber of Commerce would later partner in the building of Highways 28, 28A and 28X. After the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Air Force, in search of an area to test rockets and the missile system of the future, chose the Primrose Lake area as a test and training site. In 1954, the Air Armament Evaluation Detachment of the Central Experimental and Proving Establishment was formed.

Material to build an air force base was air lifted in and by the spring of 1954 two runways were completed just west of the Village of Grand Centre.

The community that began to grow around the military base became known as Medley.

The region’s economy has been linked to military spending at Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake, as well as the industry in the surrounding Cold Lake Oil Sands.

On October 1, 1996 the communities that had grown to become the Town of Cold Lake and the Town of Grand Centre, as well as Medley, amalgamated to form the Town of Cold Lake. Grand Centre became known as Cold Lake South while the original Cold Lake became known as Cold Lake North. Because of Cold Lake’s origins, the area is also referred to as the Tri-Town. The municipality was granted City status in 2000 becoming The City of Cold Lake.

Continued investment in the surrounding oil sands, coupled with the steady economic stability provided by the base continued to attract many workers to the area, who increasingly began to put roots down in the community. In the last municipal census, the population of the City of Cold Lake was recorded at 15,736 with an average age of just over 30. The oil and gas industry had grown to become the largest employer for residents, many of whom enjoy raising their young families in the city: 14% of the city’s population is between the ages of 0 and 9!

About Cold Lake

THE LAKE IS A DESTINATION OF CHOICE FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO BOAT, SAIL, FISH, SWIM, OR JUST WANDER AND ENJOY THE SANDY BEACHES AND BEAUTIFUL CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER.

The beauty of Cold Lake has drawn people to the area since before Alberta became a province. Covering over 373 square kilometres, Cold Lake is the seventh largest lake in Alberta. The Lake’s depths reach up to 100 metres in spots, a factor which contributes to the diversity of fish that can be found in the lake.

The Cold Lake Marina — one of the largest marinas in Western Canada — features over 250 berths for boats, as well as a breakwater and promenade for pedestrians to enjoy.

For sports anglers there are over 23 species of fish including lake trout, northern pike, walleye, yellow perch, burbot and white fish.

Cold Lake spans the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan. The lake, originally named Big Fish Lake, holds the Alberta angling record for a 52-pound lake trout caught in 1929

by Mrs. Ericksson. It is also home to the legendary Kinosoo, a gigantic fish! Legend has it that a young Cree man who lived and hunted in the area set out to cross the lake to visit his betrothed. A huge fish emerged from

the water and bit his canoe in two and the poor man was never seen again.

Cold Lake is very large and conditions can change quickly due to weather and wind. Having a reasonable knowledge of the lake’s contours (deep & shallow areas), and keeping an eye on the local forecast, would be helpful to anyone enjoying the lake at all times of the year. The lake typically freezes by the end of December, giving sports anglers a chance to enjoy ice fishing. It has been recorded that in 1979 the lake stayed frozen as late as May 29th.

As of September 2009, all boaters are required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Cold Lake, like any other lake, has specific sport regulations. Guides are available free of charge at the various locations where fishing licenses are sold, and at the local Cold Lake Fish and Wildlife office at 5013 51 Street.

With a population close to 16,000 and a trading area over 50,000, Cold Lake has three main economic industries — the Canadian Forces Base 4 Wing, oil and gas developments, as well as a strong tourism sector.

Cold Lake is a young vibrant community with almost 60% of the population under 35.

Stability, diversity, and potential characterize Cold Lake’s economic horizon. The significant growth rate can be attributed to a strong and diversified economic base including such industries as heavy oil, National Defence, tourism and service-based businesses. Cold Lake is located in the Cold Lake Oil Sands Region, the second largest oil sands deposit in Alberta.

Access to Cold Lake is gained through Alberta Provincial Highway #28 northeast of Edmonton and Northern Woods and Water Route Highway #55.

COLD LAKE VISUAL ARTS SOCIETY The Cold Lake Visual Arts Society was founded in 1998 by Svala (Val) Dunn. The Society creates awareness and encourages appreciation for the visual arts through art displays, education and interaction with the public.

At Beantrees CafĂŠ, a local community hub, visitors can view art from around the Cold Lake region.

KINOSOO PERFORMING ARTS ASSOCIATION Founded in 1979, Kinosoo Performing Arts Association is a non-profit society dedicated to bringing quality entertainment to the Cold Lake area. Its mission is to strengthen and invigorate Cold Lake through the performing arts. Coordinated and run entirely by volunteers, the society receives funding assistance from local sponsors and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. New committee members are always welcome.

JANVIER GALLERY Alex Janvier, Dene Suline, from Cold Lake First Nations, has been a professional artist for several decades. Alex Janvier is a trendsetter, renowned for his murals, fine flowing lines and use of bright, often symbolic colour combinations. Some of his works are seen at the Canadian Museum of Civilization; Strathcona County Hall in Sherwood Park, Alberta; Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton; Casino Dene on Cold Lake First Nations; and most recently the new Rogers Place Arena in Edmonton, Alberta.

In recognition of his success, in 2008 Alex Janvier was awarded the Marion Nicoll Visual Arts Award, the Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts and two honorary Doctorates of Law from Canadian Universities. Alex Janvier is also a member of the Order of Canada and has earned three prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards.

In 2010, Alex Janvier was invested into the Alberta Order of Excellence.

y r a t i l i M CONSTRUCTION OF ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE (RCAF) STATION COLD LAKE BEGAN IN 1952.

The area was selected by the RCAF due to several unique geographical features that were ideal for station operations.

Interestingly, Cold Lake was the first flying station to be built by the RCAF after the Second World War. In the early years of its existence, RCAF station Cold Lake saw a significant amount of development. By 1954 most of the major buildings were completed, these included a massive cantilever hangar, four 160-foot structural steel hangars, chapels, officer and non-commissioned member quarters and messes, and many other buildings. Since that time a variety of services and infrastructure pieces have become a part of the base.

Between 1964 and 1968 the entire Canadian Armed Forces underwent a controversial reorganization known as unification. At this point, RCAF station Cold Lake became Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Cold Lake, which is its technical name even today.

The end of the Cold War saw the closing of many European bases, and the consolidation of those fighter forces to Canada. With the closing of the Canadian base in Baden-Soellingen, Germany in June 1993, CFB Cold Lake would become the new home to 4 Wing, which is a formation that includes airframes and support components but is technically not a physical location.

4 Wing and CFB Cold Lake make-up Canada’s largest fighter force base and is the site of a number of sought after training opportunities. This includes an almost unrestricted, enormous air weapons range equipped with state-of-the-art simulated threats and targets, making it the ideal location to host the renowned international coalition exercise known as Maple Flag.

The Department of National Defense (DND) employs over 1,700 service personnel and more than 200 civilian personnel throughout 4 Wing and CFB Cold Lake. The resultant large military dependent population contributes to the base being a large player in the local economy.

4 Wing and CFB Cold Lake’s mission is to generate, deploy, employ and sustain mission-ready, combat-capable, integrated air power to support Canada’s security needs at home and abroad.

4 Wing is currently home to the 409 Tactical Fighter “Nighthawk” Squadron, and 410 Tactical Fighter Operational Training “Cougar” Squadron, both which fly the CF-188 Hornet. It is also home to the 417 Combat Support Squadron, flying the CH-146 Griffon helicopter, in addition to a variety of other operational and training, flying and non-flying, squadrons and units.

The Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR) straddles the Alberta/Saskatchewan border on the 55th parallel and is recognized as being one of the finest facilities of its kind in the world.

4 Wing and CFB Cold Lake celebrated its 60th Anniversary on the weekend of July 18-19, 2014 with a variety of events and activities, including an airshow with more than 14,000 attendees.

MAPLE FLAG

Exercise MAPLE FLAG, first held in 1978, is a coalition air combat exercise that attracts hundreds of participants each year. The exercise provides essential air combat training for all participants, and is designed to meet as many specific unit training objectives as possible. During the exercise, participants from around the world engage in a simulated, multi-day air campaign.

The exercise, which emphasizes air operations involving large groups of coalition air forces, provides aircrews with realistic training in a modern simulated air combat environment. This annual event has had a positive economic impact on the area since its creation in 1978.

Hotels, motels and B&Bs become fully booked for miles around, so if you plan on being in the local area during the exercise, please book early if looking for accommodations.

From May to June, visitors are welcome to view aircraft from

the viewing area (excluding weekends and holidays) during take-off and landing. Keep in mind that if you are expecting to see actual missions, they are only flown inside the range, many kilometers to the north of 4 Wing Cold Lake.

If you do decide to visit the viewing area, please be aware that at all times while on DND property you are subject to special rules and regulations and should be prepared to be searched, should the appropriate need arise; the exercise does have heightened security protocols. For an even closer look at these aircrafts, be sure to attend the annual Maple Flag Open House. Step onto the tarmac and take advantage of the opportunity to sit in the pilot’s seat, as participating countries showcase their aircraft for viewing.

COLD LAKE MUSEUM The Cold Lake Museum is a multi-theme museum located at the old site of 42 Radar Squadron. Separate buildings, connected by a covered walkway, house an Aboriginal Gallery, Heritage Gallery, Oil and Gas Gallery and Air Force Museum. Visit our museum, where you will find interesting artifacts and histories as well as some unusual items from our local history. We’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

ABORIGINAL GALLERY Long before Europeans came to the Cold Lake area, Aboriginal people inhabited the shores and woodlands of the Lakeland region.

The Dene Suline and Cree Nations made clever use of the resources of the lake and surrounding areas. Artifacts from dream catchers to fishing and trapping gear are part of a storyline depicting the history of the Dene Suline and Cree Nations, as well as the Métis people, living on the shores of Cold Lake. This gallery was assembled with the joint efforts of the Cold Lake Friendship Centre and the Cold Lake Museums.

Located atop “Radar Hill” the Cold Lake Museum Group resides in the former 42 Radar installation, a relic from the Cold War. Although the radar domes (the “giant golf balls”) are long gone, they were once a familiar sight around the countryside, seen from far and wide.

With the assistance of interactive exhibits, visitors can understand why unique technology was developed specifically for the Cold Lake Oil Sands. Test your knowledge of the oil industry with a trip to the Cold Lake Museums Oil & Gas Gallery.

HERITAGE GALLERY Cold Lake is currently an area known for oil exploration and developments, as well as being home to one of the largest military bases in Canada. However, the modern history of Cold Lake goes back to the 18th century with the arrival of the first Europeans.

Historical industries included fur trapping, logging, fishing and farming.

The Heritage Gallery contains the artifacts and storyline of a bygone era, as well as the civilian history of the last century.

From 1954 to 1992, 42 Radar Squadron operated from the large radar facility atop the aptly named “Radar Hill.” Today, the facility is home to the Cold Lake Museums. The first museum of the group is the Cold Lake Air Force Museum (CLAFM). Pulling into the yard, visitors receive their first glimpse of the CLAFM with the aircraft and army trucks in an outdoor display.

The entrance to the museum brings one into the Air Force Exhibit.

Therein details are revealed about 4 Wing’s operating and support units, including the flying squadrons and the base hospital that now exists only in history.

In the Air Force display visitors can: Take a look at the model of what the 42 Radar Site looked like while it was operational. Visitors can view the radar equipment and the immense height finder antenna that aided in the protection of North America from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. TAKING ITS NAME FROM THE LEGENDARY FISH, KINOSOO BEACH IS THE CITY OF COLD LAKE’S SUMMER HUB.

Locals and visitors alike enjoy the area’s long stretch of soft sand, the grassed picnic areas and promenade-style walkway. The summer heat warms the shallow swimming area and a new splash park offers everyone a chance to cool off.

The beach also boasts half-court basketball, a concession stand, public washrooms and a playground.

Kinosoo Beach plays host to the community’s largest annual summer festivals: Canada Day on July 1st and Aqua Days, which is held on the August long weekend.

A 50-metre zip line is also located at the beach, and with the Kinosoo Beach Master Plan passed by Cold Lake’s City Council in 2014, the area is expected to see continued improvements over the next few years.

WITH ACCESS TO A MAGNIFICENT MARINA AND SHOAL FREE WATERS, COLD LAKE IS ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SAILING SECRETS IN WESTERN CANADA.

Cold Lake is home to the Cold Lake Sailing Association. Their goal is to sponsor events that promote friendly competition among sailors of all levels of interest. The regular Wednesday night race series runs from early June until mid–September, plus three open regattas. Races start between 6:00 pm and 6:30 pm.

The Ice Breaker Regatta is the first of the season, held in early June, it challenges all Cold Lake sailors to rejuvenate their skills and shed all traces of winter dry dock. The Charlie Callaghan Pursuit Race Regatta, held in July, is a race that has the sailboats start at different times and finish around the same time. This race is in dedication to the late Charlie Callaghan, who served as volunteer race officiator during the club’s formative years. The season highlight held on the second weekend of August, is the famous Endurance Challenge which is, without question, the premier sailing regatta

of the year. The race encompasses a distance of 40–45 kilometres and is an excellent way to experience the open waters of Cold Lake.

The family side of the sailing club boasts several family cruise weekends and offers visiting families a chance to sail to the lake’s distant shores and enjoy Alberta’s best sailing lake!

Visiting sailors are welcome to participate in both the races and family events. Challenge your racing tactics against the competition and varying wind and wave conditions. Members of the Cold Lake Sailing Association also offer up rides on race night to those new to the sport and can work with organizations for group sessions.

Sailing instruction is now available for kids ages 9 and up, and a permanent program is being set up in Cold Lake.

WHILE EXPLORING COLD LAKE, TAKE THE TIME TO CHECK OUT THE MANY TRAILS IN AND AROUND THE CITY.

Cold Lake’s Millennium Trail is a 10km trail running from one end of the community to the other. Completely paved and cleared year round, the trail offers an excellent place to get some exercise and enjoy the great outdoors. Special needs vehicles like wheelchairs and scooters are the only motorized vehicles allowed on this accessible trail.

The Millennium Trail connects with Heritage Trail in Cold Lake North. Heritage Trail, in turn, winds along the shores of Cold Lake from the marina to Kinosoo Beach.

African Trail also connects Cold Lake North and Cold Lake South. This trail, stretching 6.4km long, is used by cross-country skiers, mountain bikers, and hikers, and offers many scenic, rural views along the way.

Great bird watching opportunities are available by accessing the trails in Cold Lake Provincial Park on the edge of Cold Lake. The park’s 11.5km trail system covers a variety of terrain and provides excellent cross country skiing, hiking and mountain biking opportunities.

When spring time arrives in the City of Cold Lake, over 200 species of birds can be seen in a variety of habitats, including clear water lakes, marshy wetlands and mixed-wood boreal forest. During the four-week period from mid-May to midJune, bird watching enthusiasts are rewarded with breeding colors and songs. A turkey vulture, a great blue heron, or a flock of pelicans flying in formation are frequent sightings, so photographers should keep cameras close.

Do you have your sights set on larger wildlife? Many of them call our area home; from foxes to bears, to coyotes howling at night and the deer or moose that may cross your path.

The opportunity for a photo op with one of these beautiful creatures may happen at any time.

Cold Lake is also the end point for the Iron Horse Trail. This trail, built on the former railway easement, has the distinction of being the longest continuous recreational trail in Alberta. The Iron Horse Trail is open to motorized vehicles including quads and snowmobiles. The trestle bridge outside of Cold Lake is just one of the many scenic and historic views to be enjoyed along the way.

The Parent Link Centre offers drop-in play times for families as well as comprehensive support in five core areas: Early Childhood Development and Care; Parent Education; Family Support; Information and Referrals, and Development Screening.

A free toy-lending library and parenting library are also available.

Open six days a week, the Cold Lake Parent Link Centre is home to indoor and outdoor playgrounds.

The indoor space features a separate toddler area and plenty of room for older children to play. This is the perfect venue for children to socialize – and for parents to meet as well!

In the winter, the groomed cross-country ski trails cover a 10-kilometre stretch around the golf course and give both the skater and the classic skier the opportunity to test their skills.

Even novice skiers can come to practice and enjoy the beautiful setting on a sunny winter day. Wildlife in the area abounds, giving people the chance to spot white-tailed deer, moose and black bear.

Sports Recreation COLD LAKE ENERGY CENTRE

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE CITY OF COLD LAKE, IMPERIAL PARK AND THE ENERGY CENTRE ARE THE COMMUNITY’S HUB OF SPORTS AND RECREATION.

Accessible by the Millennium Trail, Imperial Park is a 120-hectare parcel of land that is home to six soccer fields, a rugby pitch, eight ball diamonds, the brand new Mach 1 Skate Board Park, a community garden and the Energy Centre itself.

The park’s irrigated fields ensure that sports teams can make the most of their season, while the new Mach 1 Skateboard Park was designed for everything from skateboards to BMX bikes to scooters, and lets riders of all skill levels have some fun!

Inside the Energy Centre, an NHL-sized arena — Imperial Oil Place — is home to Cold Lake’s hockey teams, figure skaters, and pleasure skaters, and it is also a venue for concerts and trade shows. The Reid Field House is also open for the public to play a variety of sports and to plan their celebrations, special events and seminars. The field house sees use from the local lacrosse and indoor soccer leagues and has proven to be a very flexible space: It plays host to elaborate gala events, corporate functions, children’s birthday parties and even drop-in pickleball.

For those looking for a workout, the recently renovated and expanded Cenovus Wellness Centre has all the amenities

JJ PARR SPORTS CENTRE

THE COLONEL J.J. PARR SPORTS CENTRE IS LOCATED AT 4 WING AND IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR GENERAL USE.

This multi-use complex covers an area of over three acres and includes an Aquatic Centre, main and mini gymnasiums, squash and racquetball courts, spin room, large weight/cardio room, and two NHL-size ice surfaces.

The Aquatic Centre features a six-lane, 25-metre competition pool and a 10 x 15-metre leisure pool, a waterslide, hot tub and sauna. Both pools are of Italian design made of stainless steel, the first ever to be installed in Canada. The Aquatic Centre is staffed by certified lifeguards/instructors, who work hard to provide the community with a safe environment in which the aquatic world can be explored and enjoyed to its fullest potential.

The main gymnasium features two NBA-sized basketball courts, eight badminton courts, three volleyball courts, and a European handball court.

The mini gym is specially designed for aerobics, dance and tactical training. One of the three squash courts is set up as a spin centre for indoor cycle sessions; while the other two are open for play. The racquetball court also serves as a “walleyball” court for team play. The weight/ cardio room features a large selection of free weights and selectorized resistance equipment, as well as a sizable cardio-fleet featuring numerous treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical trainers, steppers and rowing machines. The two indoor rinks are second to none and are complimented by a third NHL-size outdoor rink directly adjacent to the Colonel J.J. Parr Sports Centre.

Located in the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre, the Recreation Department offers a variety of choices for your recreational and fitness activities. There is something for all ages including swimming, skating, fitness, sports and children’s programming all year round.

If the outdoors is your preference, the J.J. Parr Sports Centre has tennis courts, soccer and ball fields, an outdoor volleyball court as well as a skateboard park for youth of all ages to enjoy. The department is also pleased to offer further youth and adult programming out of the Mackenzie Leisure Centre, which includes; dance, music, art, drama, yoga, gymnastics and many more activities.

WINTER FUN

THE COLD LAKE AREA OFFERS HUNDREDS OF KILOMETRES OF SNOWMOBILE TRAILS, GROOMED AND UNGROOMED.

Right on the doorstep of the community, trails and amenities are available to support snowmobile enthusiasts. The City of Cold is situated on the Trans-Canadian Snowmobile Trail (TCST) and is the beginning of the Iron Horse Trail. The Trans-Canadian Snowmobile Trail and the Iron Horse Trail are connected, and this offers continuously marked and groomed trails through Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and into eastern Canada.

From Saskatchewan, the well-marked TCST follows along the eastern shore of Cold Lake from the mouth of the Cold River. The trail heads south-west onto the Iron Horse Trail from Cold Lake, across the Beaver River Ridge to Bonnyville. The Iron Horse Trail is a 300km multi-use trail and a former railroad right-of-way. It runs to Smoky Lake and has an alternate trail to Heinsburg.

The Cold Lake Snowmobile Club maintains a warm-up shelter equipped with a fire pit and wood stove on the northeast side of Crane Lake. It is accessible from a trail starting at Sandy Beach, just south of English Bay on Cold Lake. It provides an excellent destination for a family ride and at midpoint offers an incredible view overlooking Ethel Lake towards the city.

When conditions permit, the TCST and the Crane Lake Trail are groomed. The avid snowmobiler can ride to a variety of destinations and can always blaze their own trail. Whether travelling east or west on the TCST or Iron Horse Trail,

With its natural and machine-made snow, Kinosoo Ridge Snow Resort is a popular outdoor destination and is ideal for beginners and families. The resort is known for being one of the best flatland ski areas in Western Canada with its triple chairlift, T-bar and handle tow operation. It offers groomed runs and night skiing as well as a designated terrain park. Certified CSIA instructors provide lessons and are available for all levels and ability. After tearing downhill, patrons can warm up and relax with good food and hot drinks in the chalet at the large cafeteria or in the licensed lounge.

The newly renovated on-site rental shop has approximately 400 pairs of skis in stock to fit even the smallest of feet.

Most are shaped skis, but straight cut planks are available for those wishing for a different style. Snowboard enthusiasts will enjoy the fact that the ridge stocks nearly 60 snowboards and necessities for rental use, which will get you ready for the hill in minutes. The certified staff are available to provide general tuneups for both skis and snowboards. The pro-shop stocks a variety of accessories and equipment for all your skiing or snowboarding pleasure.
