he photo to the right tells the story of a trio at last year’s Lucky Leprechaun 5K in Lincoln City: a happy dog, a contented adult and a pretty miserable child. As most humans with ages of a single digit tend to do, my niece started the race at full speed, only to blow up halfway. By the time we had made it three quarters of the full distance, she was just short of sitting down in not-so-peaceful protest. So, I threw her on my back and kept on running all the way to the finish line.
For the next few weeks, I was quite insufferable as I found myriad ways to work the story into every conversation, quite proud that in my latter 50s, I ran roughly a half mile with a 70-pound human on my back. This weekend, you can create stories of your own at two early season walk/ runs. The aforementioned Lucky Leprechaun 5K, geared more toward family fun and personal goals, and the Newport Shamrock Run, geared more toward competitive runners and fans of costumes. Read more on page 10. Luckily, running with a human backpack is not required at either event.

Newport hosts a spring quartet of concerts
Awell-curated playlist, feel-good bluegrass and musical tributes will keep the Newport Performing Arts Center lively with four new concerts set for the next four weeks.
The concerts kick off on Sunday, March 16, at 3 pm, with Marty Isenberg’s Wes Anderson Playlist. Described as a sonic storyboard and soundtrack to the wonder, loneliness and nostalgia of life in the modern world, the concert features Isenberg’s own Wes Anderson-inspired spin on songs by artists like David Bowie, Nick Drake and the Velvet Underground through the lexicon of jazz orchestration and improvisation.
Next, on Friday, March 21, at 7:30 pm, is Broken Compass Bluegrass. Known for its tight arrangements, tasteful picking and distinguished songwriting, this northern California-based band offers a fresh take on bluegrass from musicians Kyle Ledson, Django Ruckrich, Mei Lin Heirendt and Sam Jacobs. Their energy is palpable as they weave intricate melodies and harmonize with ease, transporting fans to a place where tradition meets innovation. Whether you’re a die-hard bluegrass aficionado or just looking for some foot-stomping fun, this one-night-only event is sure to leave folks of all ages spellbound and inspired. On Friday, March 28, at 7:30 pm, A New Randy Hansen Experience, celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix, takes the stage. For nearly three decades, world-renowned guitarist Randy Hansen has
acquired a reputation for being one of the best Hendrix impersonators on the planet. In fact, he’s one of the few players officially recognized by the Hendrix family.
Releasing countless discs through the years featuring both stellar Hendrix jams and his own authentic Hendrix-inspired riffage, Hansen is a true guitar legend — delivering landscapes of sound, masterful guitar work, strong riffage and remarkably authentic killer cosmic tones as he channels Jimi’s spirit through his Fender Strat guitar.
Last, but certainly not least, the Fleetwood Mac tribute band Taken by the Sky performs live on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 pm. In what’s sure to be a sold-out show, the group offers faithful renditions of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic songs — perfectly capturing the harmonies, emotion and energy that made the original band legendary. Fans will be treated to favorites like “Rhiannon,” “Go Your Own Way” and “The Chain,” all performed with the spirit and passion that defined the band’s timeless sound.
Tickets are $30 for Marty Isenberg’s Wes Anderson Playlist, $20 for Broken Compass Bluegrass and $40 for Randy Hansen or Taken by the Sky. The Newport Performing Arts Center is located at 777 W Olive Street.

Dan Howard is very excited about the coming Newport Symphony Orchestra gala.
“This is going to be a major event here on the Oregon Coast,” said the orchestra’s executive director. “The grand spring gala promises to be the ‘go-to’ gathering for supporters of the arts in general and fine symphonic music in particular.”
Held on Saturday, March 29, in the Best Western-Agate Beach grand ballroom, the gala will run from 6 pm until everyone decides to head home.
“This elegant, oceanfront setting is perfect for our gala, given the orchestra’s long association with the sea,” Howard said. “A beautiful venue for a beautiful evening.”
The venue includes fine dining options: Pacific salmon, gourmet chicken or vegetarian pasta, plus a variety of fine wines presented at each table.
And, as one would expect at a symphony gala, there will be fine music.
“Some of our excellent NSO musicians will be there to remind everyone of the talent and dedication they are promoting when they support their symphony orchestra,” said
regulatory requirements.
Conductor and Music Director Adam Flatt. “I may even pick up a viola myself and join in.”
But the highlight of the evening will surely be the gala auction.
“We will have a fine, fun variety of items and events that folks can bid on,” Howard said. “Everything from discounts at local restaurants and shops to exotic vacations, spa resort stays, deep-sea fishing trips and other adventures.”
One unique adventure will be a fine gourmet dinner prepared and served by Howard himself, who, in addition to being symphony executive director, is also a talented amateur chef.
The auction will be conducted by auctioneer extraordinaire and longtime Oregon State Representative David Gomberg.
“Rep. Gomberg is an exciting and enthusiastic spokesman for any cause he supports,” Howard said. “And his support as our auctioneer will guarantee the success of our gala.”
Tickets are on sale through Thursday, March 20, at newportsymphony.org. For more information, email info@ newportsymphony.org or call at 458-868-9155.
The course runs from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. The cost is $60 which includes a book and two-year certification. For more information and to register, email aconner@ samhealth.org or call 541-574-4952.
Wii love to bowl
Lane up for the Newport 60+ Activity Center’s annual Senior Wii Bowling Tournament on Tuesday, March 18, when groups of four will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by wearing a bit o’ green and dressing in fun team outfits. This fun event turns the dining room into a fourlane bowling alley. Teams of four players compete for the top prize and bragging rights for an entire year. Team-themed dress and creative team names are greatly
encouraged.
Each member of the four-person team will bowl one game, and those scores are added together for a team score. Awards will be given for the top scoring male and female bowlers, as well as first, second and third place for the teams.
Teams may also bring along their favorite cheerleaders. Bowling warm-ups start at 9:30 am, and team competition starts at 10 am. Treats will be served after the competition, and the menu may include delicious Irish stew.

Framing the photo and the narrative
The next Spotlight on Central Coast Authors will land on Bill Posner, guest of the Willamette Writers Coast Chapter this Saturday, March 15, at Newport Public Library.
Posner is a Newport-based photographer and the author of the Ping and Zippy Adventure Mysteries, written for readers aged eight to 12.
Drawing inspiration from Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys series, Posner’s stories feature 13-year-old friends Ping and Zippy, who solve mysteries along the Oregon Coast.
Posner will cover the development of his characters, how his photography influences his writing and how his series has grown from an initial concept to his third in-progress book, “The Lighthouse Legacy Mystery” from which he will read selected passages.
Whether behind the camera or at his writing desk, Posner is dedicated to creating content with the viewer and
reader in mind. In addition to the Ping and Zippy novels, he is the author of the new short story collection “Whispers from the Shore,” “Walking Newport III: Places You May Have Missed” and numerous coloring books, prompt journals and photography books featuring the Oregon Coast.
An open mic will follow Posner’s talk. Participants who sign up in advance will have five minutes to read a work of their choice.
The Willamette Writers Coast Chapter hosts a mix of in-person and virtual events from September through June. Willamette Writers, the parent organization, is the largest writers association in Oregon and one of the largest in the nation.
Saturday’s program begins at 2 pm at Newport Public Library, located at 35 NW Nye Street.

Newport church hosts Earth Summit
Newport’s Atonement Lutheran Church will play host to the 12th annual Oregon Interfaith Earth Summit this Sunday, March 16.
Atonement will join 17 other community hubs for this statewide gathering, which will focus on the theme of “climate safety and health.” Participants will learn about what is happening with Oregon’s climate and hear the responses of faith leaders, youth leaders, scientists and state officials. Those attending will be able to connect with community organizations and local agencies as they explore how to protect themselves and their neighbors from fires, smoke, extreme weather and other effects.
The event will begin with remarks from faith and youth leaders at a statewide Zoom plenary session. Practical workshops will follow, both in person and on Zoom. Prominent authors of the Oregon Climate Assessment will make presentations, Dr. Erica Fleischman,
director of Oregon Climate Change Research Institute and Dr. Larry O’Neill, director of the Oregon Climate Service. Jonna Papaefthimiou, state resilience officer and advisor to the governor, will discuss the state of Oregon’s climate resilience.
A representative from the Yakona Nature Preserve and Learning Center in Newport will be available to discuss the work of the preserve in fostering climate resilience, education and sustainability in this permanent conservation location on the ancestral home of the Yaqo’n people. Experience the sights and sounds of Indonesia at the next installment of the Lincoln City Cultural Center’s new Voyages series this Sunday, March 16.
Gamelan Sari Pandhawa, a nonprofit cultural organization based in Eugene, will give a special performance that will feature bamboo instruments from the island of Bali.
The instruments will include the tingklik, a bamboo xylophone and angklung, a set of tuned bamboo rattles. Playing alongside a Balinese bamboo flute, the performers create the signature interlocking rhythms of Balinese Rindik music. Adding a contemporary twist, the performance will also include a saxophone, merging traditional melodies with a global fusion sound.
In addition to the music, the musicians will offer an engaging discussion, along with a presentation and slideshow about the history and cultural significance of Balinese Rindik music.
Gamelan Sari Pandhawa is dedicated to providing an educational and entertaining multicultural experience for
the Eugene community, enriching lives through expanding cultural awareness. Since 1995, the ensemble has performed concerts and taught classes throughout the area, and seeks to increase the community’s understanding of traditional Javanese cultural arts, music, dance and shadow puppetry. The group performs on bronze and wood instruments elegantly handcrafted and painted by master instrument makers in Central Java.
The group also seeks to continue its contribution to the community through teaching others to play gamelan, and to reach those who have never had the privilege of experiencing this music by adding performances in different venues throughout the area. Gamelan welcomes support from community members and institutions that value the multicultural experience.
This special presentation is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.
The performance begins at 2 pm at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, located at 540 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, go to lincolncity-culturalcenter.org or call 541-994-9994.
Vibrant colors, with the caps on
Given how well they blend into the forest, it’s hard to believe that, when treated properly, mushrooms can be used to create vibrant dyes in stunning colors.
Learn more at the next Coastal Arts Guild Tea & Talk on Thursday, March 20, at the Newport Visual Arts Center.
Sara Gibson, a life-long forager of all wild, edible and useful plants and mushrooms, will give an introduction to dying with West Coast fungi and lichens and talk about using mushroom pigments for fiber arts on the West Coast and in the Canary Islands.
Artists from around the world are creating paper, watercolors, pigment sticks and dyes in an ever-expanding world of mushroom and lichen dyes. Gibson has focused on harnessing pigments for use in fiber arts. Her talk will cover the history
of mushroom dyeing, sustainable harvest practices, foraging safety and how to process your own finds. Guests will take part in creating their own dye samples from regionally abundant dye species.
Gibson has led forays for outdoor schools, Oregon State Parks, mushroom camps and school groups. She has been a mushroom and lichen dyer for more than 15 years and teaches workshops on dying and wet felting with mushrooms and protein-based fibers.
She lives on the Central Oregon Coast with her family and is a school garden coordinator.
The March 20 talk begins at 2 pm at the Newport Visual Arts Center, located at 777 NW Beach Drive.

Theatre West’s new play offers family high jinks
Lincoln City’s Theatre West continues its special run of plays to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the troupe with “And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little,” opening this Thursday, March 13.
A Broadway success authored by Paul Zindel, this biting, touching and often wildly funny play probes deeply into the tortured relationship of three sisters whose lives have reached a point of crisis.
Set in the early 1960s, the dark comedy explores the relationship among the very different sisters after the death of their mother.
The action takes place in the Reardon family apartment, where sisters Catherine, played by Devonee Trivett, and Anna, played by Teresa Johnson, are living. Several months of caring for her sick mother only to see her pass has left Anna suffering a severe nervous breakdown. She has become a complete hypochondriac, obsessed with animals and rabies. Catherine’s reaction to both her mother’s death and her sister’s ailment has been to “drink a little.” The third sister Ceil, played by Laurie Hurla, did not have any sort of contact with the family while her mother was suffering, but rather ran off to marry Catherine’s boyfriend, the mentioned-but-never-seen Edward Adams.
Ceil has come to the Reardon home to coax Catherine into having Anna committed. Neither Anna nor Catherine is interested in anything their sister has to say. Halfway through dinner a woman who works in guidance at the school where Anna and Catherine work, Fleur Stein, played by Cheryl Durinick, invades the family conversation and is later joined by her husband Bob, played by Dave Jones. Family drama and high jinks ensue. Theatre West veteran Bryan Kirsch directs the play,
first performed at Theatre West and directed by Marj Nylund in 2007.
“I call it ‘Three sisters with mommy issues,’” Kirsch said. “Despite the title, the play is not centered around alcohol, it is centered around the somewhat crazy relationship between the sisters.”
Due to a few temporary physical setbacks, Kirsch has had to depend on others more than anticipated getting the play ready for opening day.
“I have had to rely a lot on the cast and crew and it almost makes me want to cry how great they’ve been,” he said. “I’ve actually had less stress with this one than any other I’ve directed.”
Two new cast members have impressed Kirsch and contributed to the lack of stress as a director.
“Teresa is brand new to the stage and is doing remarkably well,” he said. “And Laurie hasn’t done anything since high school and has really stepped into the role.”
The cast is filled out by Tricia Chandler as Mrs. Pentrano, and Chris Vono as a delivery person. With some adult language and themes, the play is not recommended for kids.
“And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little” runs through April 5, with performances at 7:30 pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and a 2 pm matinée on Sunday, March 30. Tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for seniors aged 60 and older. Theatre West is located at 3536 SE Hwy. 101. For more information, go to theatrewest.com or call 541-9945663.
