MBy Gretchen Ammerman Oregon Coast TODAY
y niece has a wicked sense of humor, and since she was an age you could count on one hand, has meticulously planned her annual April Fools gags well in advance. This year, the first since they welcomed a pug into their home, she combined the puppy’s early difficulties in potty training with her sweet tooth. The plan was to take a dollop of creamy brown Nutella and put it on Mom’s bed. Then calling her into the room, announce that pug Mia had had an accident, but to be sure, Anevay would dip a finger into the brown goo and taste it, hoping for maximum shock and disgust from her mother until she could shout “April Fools!”
Here at TODAY Towers, we have, since the first of our almost 20 years, run an April Fools story. Some work better than others, but this year, based on the number of calls and messages, we seem to have hit it out of the park.
We absolutely don’t mean to cause distress, just a good chuckle once the reader figures out the ruse or makes it to the end of the piece where we give you a place to confirm the story and find the truth.
Have a great idea for a story for next year’s fool? Feel free to send it to me at gammerman@oregoncoasttoday.com.
Lincoln City’s Community Days is celebrating its 66th year, offering eight days packed with fun, friendship and fund-raising.
Running from Friday, April 18, through Saturday, April 26, the celebration will see the return of beloved local events like Mud Flat Golf, the Ducky Derby, the Beach Bonfire and the Pancake Breakfast to name just a few.
With Earth Day falling within the bounds of Community Days, several events follow this theme, including a SOLVE beach clean sponsored by Lincoln City Parks and Recreation; Surf and Earth, a celebration of Oregon Coast surfing organized by ZuhG Life; and an Earth Day celebration at Camp Westwind just north of Lincoln City, featuring tours, art activities and more.
A new event this year, Dark Skies Over Devils Lake, invites stargazers to gather at Regatta Park from 7 to 10 pm on
Thursday, April 24, for a blend of educational and cultural activities organized by Central Oregon Coast Friends of the Night Sky.
The evening offers the chance to experience the wonder of the Lyrid meteor shower, with guided stargazing by local astro-professional Sifan Kahale. Guests can also enjoy live piano performances, community storytelling and try their hand at crafting eco-friendly luminaria using dark-sky-friendly redlight flashlights.
The celebration will conclude on Saturday, April 26, with the awards ceremony at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. This casual get-together will include food, Lincoln City 60th anniversary cake for everyone and awards for Volunteer of the Year, Leader of the Year, Innovator of the Year, Unsung Hero of the Year and Rising Star, recognizing an exceptional person under the age of 18
Throughout the Community Days celebration, keep your eyes peeled for the distinctive blue pinwheels set up at various locations, promoting the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign against child abuse, sponsored by Chinook Winds Casino Resort.

How can we develop empathy toward others? Join Willamette Writers Coast Chapter to explore the answer with guest poet Willa Schneberg at Newport Public Library this Saturday, April 19. Schneberg will lead a generative writing workshop titled, “Developing Empathy Through Writing the Persona Poem.”
The Persona Poem written in the voice of another person, real or imagined, can bring empathy and compassion into the fore. Participants are encouraged to come with ideas for poems, essays or character sketches of individuals they have a special interest in knowing. There will be time to share writing and discuss processes.
Prior to the workshop, Schneberg will read from her sixth and most recent poetry collection, “The Naked Room.”
As a poet, ceramic sculptor, interdisciplinary artist and curator, Schneberg has been honored with the Oregon Book Award in Poetry, the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Award, second place in the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards and numerous residencies. Her poetry has been translated into multiple languages. Currently, she is working on a poetry/photography project, “What We Hold & Leave Behind” with photographer Jim Lommasson.
The Willamette Writers Coast Chapter
hosts a mix of in-person and virtual events from September through June. Willamette Writers, the parent organization, is the largest writers association in Oregon and one of the largest in the nation.
Saturday’s program begins at 2 pm at Newport Public Library, located at 35 NW Nye Street. For more information, go to willamettewriters.org.
Celebrate Earth Day on the beach in Lincoln City on the actual Earth Day, this Tuesday, April 22.
The activities will begin at 3 pm at the D River State Recreation Site, when anyone interested to join will help form a human peace symbol on the beach.
“We will have a windsock on a pole at the beach to designate where folks can join in so we can organize the Peace Circle(s) and get a head count for our permit,” said organizer Alanna Baumann. “We will be on the same beach area as the kite festival.”
Once the circle has been broken, participants can head over to the Congregational Church of Lincoln City,
where members are helping coordinate a free community spaghetti dinner at 5 pm.
At 6 pm, a free community concert from Peace Band will fill the church sanctuary.
“The Peace Band is made up of area and Lincoln City musicians who play each week at our Lincoln City Music Circle and we are all donating our efforts for peace and our planet,” Baumann said. “We are a community band and not a church group. There will be a few other friends joining in as well to help present a community concert centered on peace and the Earth.”
The Congregational Church of Lincoln City is located at 2435 NW Oar Place in Lincoln City.
Acclaimed Canadian vocalist and songwriter Barbra Lica is heading south for a special performance at the Lincoln City Cultural Center next Friday, April 25. A JUNO-nominated artist, she has captivated audiences across North America with her genuine warmth, effortless stage presence and unique musical blend of jazz, country, folk and pop.
Hailing from Toronto, Lica has been recognized for her subtle, graceful and storytelling-driven approach to music. A seasoned performer on both the Canadian and American club and festival circuits, she has graced the stages of renowned venues such as New York City’s legendary Birdland and Toronto’s prestigious Koerner Hall. Her impressive festival appearances include the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. Throughout the years, she has also shared the stage with jazz greats like Christian McBride, Pat Metheny and Terence Blanchard.
Lica’s music career took off with her debut album “That’s What I Do,” which earned her a spot among Canada’s Top Five Jazz Singers on CBC. Her subsequent release,
“I’m Still Learning” garnered a JUNO Award nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album in 2017. Her latest project, “You’re Fine” is an ambitious, genre-defying album recorded in Nashville. Featuring collaborations with country music legends Paul Franklin and Wanda Vick Burchfield and produced by award-winning Canadian engineer David Kalmusky, the album seamlessly fuses jazz, country and folk elements into a deeply personal and boundary-breaking musical experience.
Known for her heartfelt and often humorous songwriting, Lica brings a fresh and unexpected perspective to contemporary music. Her lyrics explore everything from Excel spreadsheets to introversion, all delivered with a voice that is light and lilting yet soulful and profound. With a natural charisma and an infectious sense of humor, she creates an intimate connection with her audiences, making every performance feel personal and unforgettable.
The April 25 concert begins at 7 pm at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, located at 540 NE Hwy. 101.
For more information and tickets, go to lincolncity-culturalcenter.org or call 541-9949994.
Wine lovers, mark your calendars! The annual Sip & Stroll Yachats returns this Saturday, April 19, inviting visitors and locals to enjoy a delightful afternoon of wine tasting, shopping and exploration in the heart of Yachats.
Beginning at the Yachats Commons Pavilion, the popular event will feature up to 18 Oregon wineries stationed at participating businesses throughout the very walkable Central Coast village. In addition, there will be beer by Depoe Bay Brewery at the SeaNote Restaurant and Lounge; cider at Wildcraft Cider Company; and rums by Stillwagon Distillery of Reedsport at Coastal Balance Chiropractic and Massage. The event offers a unique opportunity to discover Yachats’ charming shops, galleries, eateries and other businesses – and to help participants discover a new favorite adult beverage.
“Participants start their journey at the pavilion, where they’ll receive an event map detailing all the wine stops,” said Chamber Director Nichole Lippincott. “A shuttle service will run continuously, stopping at all participating businesses and ensuring easy travel between locations.”
Some favorite features from previous years will return while new ones have been added.
“The Courier Service is back,” Lippincott said. “Participants can buy wine, tag it with their registration number, and official event couriers will pick it up and safely store it at the pavilion for pick up after you’re done tasting. This year, those who visit every wine stop can collect a stamp at each location and return their completed map to the Pavilion to enter a drawing for a chance to win an exclusive weekend getaway in Yachats. Commemorative tote bags will also be available for purchase.”
One of the things that makes Yachats such an ideal location for an event where imbibing is the focus are the nearby locations to take a break and “walk it off,” including the trails through the woods behind the commons that lead to the coast. Follow the walking trail along the ocean south to the Yachats State Recreation Area and continue on to the 804 Trail. Have a designated driver in your group? Head a bit further south to the Cape Perpetua area for even more stunning hiking opportunities.
Tickets for the Sip & Stroll include event admission, five wine sample tickets, a commemorative wine glass and an event map/booklet. General admission tickets are $30. Additional sample tickets will be available on-site throughout the afternoon. Free parking is available at the Yachats Commons. Kids are invited to join the walk, but samples and ticket purchases are restricted to those aged 21 or older.
The event runs from noon to 5 pm. The Yachats Commons Pavilion is located at 441 Hwy. 101. For more information, go to yachats.org.
Join the Beach Clean-Up at the Yachats Ocean Road State Natural Site on Sunday, April 20, from 10 am to 1 pm.
“Extend your stay and help preserve the beauty of our coastline,” said Yachats Chamber Director Nichole Lippincott. “On Sunday, Saturday’s ‘Sippers and Strollers’ are invited to join our community beach clean-up and help keep Yachats’ beaches pristine.”
Clean-up participants will be provided collection bags, gloves and snacks.

Learning life lessons can still be fun, especially if they are narrated by puppets.
Laugh along with learning when Portland’s Dragon Theater company performs the puppet show “Advanced Dungeons and Decisions” at Toledo Public Library this Friday, April 18.
The interactive show features an elf, a dwarf and a musical bard looking for adventure. After helping an innkeeper get his stinky cheese back from a giant rat, they hear of treasure to be found in a dangerous dungeon. The audience participates in their decisions as they meet monsters and goblins and make their way to the Boss Monster. Will the party meet the Owl-Bear or the Bear-Owl? The Dragon or The Treasure? If they fail, they have to go and try again and again. But in the end, they find that friendship is the true treasure as they work together and learn that everyone has different talents.
Dragon Theater produces many family-friendly shows meant to be enjoyed by all ages, with such productions as “Rock and Roll Caveman” and “Rocket Hamster’s Dreamy Space Odyssey.”
Friday’s show begins at 1 pm at Toledo Public Library, located at 173 NW 7th Street.
Newport Parks and Recreation is springing into action with a variety of nature excursions, beginning with a Woods Walk along the west end of the Ocean to Bay Trail this Saturday, April 19.
“We live in a beautiful place and we want to share it,” said Recreation Program Specialist Jenni Remillard, who will lead Tidepool Excursions and Low Tide Learning; Forager Foods beginning later in the month.
The outings are a chance to learn from an experienced guide about the plants and animals around us. Locals and visitors are welcome, as there is always something new to find.
Volunteer Jill Pridgeon will lead two walks along the Ocean to Bay Trail, the second happening on Saturday, May 17. She has been enjoying this trail for years and wanted to find a way to share it with others. She has been volunteering to lead Woods Walks since last year, sharing her knowledge and experience. The walks are held throughout the year and the content changes with the season.
“There are different things to explore at different times of the year,” she said. “It’s the same trail, but the plants are in different stages of growth, the animals are doing different things, there are so many changes to see if you are paying attention.”
The Tidepool Excursions led by Remillard will explore
three locations in Lincoln County, each with different levels of accessibility. The first will be at a soon-to-be-determined location in the Otter Crest area on Tuesday, May 29.
“We wanted to be really transparent about how accessible each of these excursions are,” Remillard said. “Some areas of the beach are not easily accessible and some tidepooling areas are very slippery and rocky, but we have found some areas that are more accessible than others. Depending on your mobility, you can choose which excursion is right for you.”
The registration pages have photos and descriptions of the beach accesses to help people decide. The excursions will focus mainly on animals found in the intertidal zone and how they survive. The Low Tide Learning; Forager Foods excursions are held at Seal Rock State Park and will focus on edible seaweeds and animals found in the intertidal area. The first of this series is on Friday, May 16.
The Woods Walk begins at noon at the Agate Beach Wayside parking lot. The fee to join is $14.50. The fee for the tide pool and foraging trips run from $14.50 to $21.50.
Pre-registration is required for the programs and can be done in person at the Newport Recreation Center, located at 225 SE Avery Street, online at secure.rec1.com/OR/newport-or/catalog or by calling 541-265-7783.

While many events orbit around the official Earth Day every year, one thing for certain is being able to find cleanups and plantings to literally help the Earth. Here are a few happening this weekend that we recommend.
Friday, April 18
Cape Lookout Stewardship Day
Cape Lookout State Park, 2 to 5 pm
Volunteers, along with Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach, and Sea and state park staff will be planting a brand-new pollinator garden to create habitat for native species and add a burst of color for visitors to enjoy. Plantings will include common yarrow, beach daisy and western columbine. Additional projects will include planting trees in the campground to replace those that did not survive from the original plantings and continuing work to keep the ivy at bay.
Activities are designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels.
Long pants, work gloves and sturdy boots are recommended. Please bring pruners, shovels and trowels if you have them, but tools will be provided as needed.
Saturday, April 19
Netarts/Oceanside Beach Cleanup
The Schooner Restaurant and Lounge, 9:30 am to 1 pm
Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach, and Sea will help lead a beach cleanup from Cape Lookout State Park to Cape Meares and Bayocean Spit.
Winter always brings an influx of marine
debris, with storms washing up harmful trash that poses a threat to wildlife and the coast’s unique coastal ecosystems. WEBS has been hosting cleanups for decades with SOLVE, an environmental non-profit that evolved from a grassroots initiative into a national model for volunteer environmental stewardship and other local partners. The result of these partnerships makes a positive impact on the health of Netarts Bay and the surrounding areas.
“Clean up the beach with friends or family, or expand your community by teaming up with fellow volunteers,” said Marina Dreeben, WEBS stewardship coordinator. “Volunteers of all ages will find the beach cleanup fun, educational and rewarding. Thanks to the amazing crew at The Schooner Restaurant and Lounge, we will kick off this year’s event with warm drinks and snacks on their deck.”
Advance registration saves time but is not required. To register and learn more about this event, go to netartsbaywebs.org.
Newport Surfrider Beach Cleanups with SOLVE
