I got some early holiday gift getting done at the recent Siletz Tribal Arts and Heritage Society fund-raiser. Niece Anevay and I scored some real treasures at the silent auction, and knowing that the money is going to help complete the Siletz tribal history and cultural center, Ghii Dee-ne Dvn, or A Place for the People, made the shopping experience all the sweeter. I also treasure the experience of watching my tiny terror tear up to the podium with sheer joy to accept her winning bid sheets.

1 pound Ground Beef (93% or leaner) 1/2 pound sliced button or cremini mushrooms 3 teaspoons minced garlic 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 2 cups uncooked whole grain

wide noodle-style pasta 1 can (14.5 ounces) reduced sodium beef broth 1 cup frozen peas 1/4 cup regular dairy sour cream plus additional for topping 1 tablespoon regular or coarse grain Dijon style mustard

Directions: Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot.

Add Ground Beef, mushrooms, garlic and thyme; cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking Ground Beef into 3/4-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally. Pour off drippings.

Stir noodles and broth into beef mixture. Bring to a boil.

Gnome for the holidays at the Happy Holidays Artisan Show

T

he Happy Holidays Artisan Show is the coast’s newest option for people who like to gather Christmas gifts and decorations early in the season, with more than 40 artisans offering quality handcrafts, art and gourmet food in a family-friendly environment.

The show, produced by award winning bead artist Anja Chavez, will debut this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 5, inside the Yachats Commons.

Guests can visit with the artisans while shopping and watch several giving live demonstrations of their craft.

Free samples of gourmet food will be offered by some of the food exhibitors. Brunch, snacks or lunch options will be available for purchase from Crepe-Alicious.

Treats for the eyes by well-known artisans Rasa Clay Works, stained glass window hangings by Jennifer Ouellet and wooden toys and puzzles from David and Ginny Moffit are just a few of the offerings to be found among the original gift options.

et the family together for the Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts’ production of “A Nice Family Gathering,” a touching comedy written by Phil Olson opening this Friday, Nov. 3.

As always, opening night is Gala Night where each ticket holder receives one free beverage and complimentary hors d’oeuvres.

Ann Harper directs the story of a family celebrating its first Thanksgiving since the death of the family patriarch. Dad, played by first-time actor Fred Foster, returns as a ghost to take care of some unfinished family business, but is seen and heard only by son Carl, played by Matthew Bergkamp. Trouble ensues when Carl learns that joining the family dinner will be friend of the family Jerry, played by Steve Lewis, last on the stage in 2017’s “A Sting in the Tale.” Mom will be portrayed by TAPA veteran Karen Downs,

Things are looking up as the Nye Beach Banner Auction hits 15 years

t was a banner summer on the Central Oregon Coast.

With warm, balmy weather, locals and visitors alike were entranced by the area’s beauty and endless recreational opportunities.

It was also a stellar season for aficionados of the arts. PostCOVID community theater resumed with auditions and rehearsals for shows in Newport and Lincoln City. Visual art displays were offered countywide at the Newport Visual Arts Center and Lincoln City Cultural Center, as well as multiple community programs supporting various artistic endeavors.

In Newport’s Nye Beach neighborhood, 38 banners graced light poles throughout the summer for the 15th annual Banner Art Project. These colorful hand-painted banners are designed and painted by artists throughout Lincoln County, in addition to Newport’s sister city in Mombetsu, Japan. All 38 banners are on display until Saturday, Nov. 11, on the second floor of the Newport Visual Arts Center. The banners will soon be auctioned off to support the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts youth arts education programs.

The online auction begins at 1 pm on Saturday, Nov. 4, and ends at 4 pm on Saturday, Nov. 11. Banner previews are available at www.32auctions.com/nyebeachbanner2023. There is also a color booklet available for $6 that features every banner.

The auction kickoff party will run from noon to 5 pm on Saturday, Nov. 4, with refreshments and live music by Ronnie Pirrello. On the banner auction’s closing day there will be a free, family-friendly art activity from noon to 4 pm featuring printing and card making.

“Everyone is welcome to participate,” said Sara Sigglekow, arts engagement manager for the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. “This will be the last opportunity to see the banners hanging together. I am always overwhelmed to see such amazing art in one spot.”

Sigglekow said the fund-raiser specifically benefits the Oregon Art Bus, a mobile classroom that brings free education and creative opportunities for area youth.

“Funds raised also go toward youth scholarships, supplies, camps, workshops and art activities,” she said. “This is a 100-percent volunteer project and it showcases the best of our community. From the people who cut the canvas drop cloth fabric, to those who sew the banners, to those who paint the first coat of background paint then clear coat afterwards, to the artists themselves, and to the volunteers who hang the banners.

There are many steps along the way and all of them are donated. It is amazing to see so many people come together to make this work.”

said that anyone who wants to participate is welcome until the blank banners run out.

Every year there is an inspirational theme provided to the artists. This year’s honors the 50th anniversary of the US Endangered Species Act, with banner artists providing their interpretations of threatened species locally, statewide and nationally.

“This is the fourth year of banner exchanges between Newport and her sister city in Mombetsu,” Sigglekow said.

“We send four banners every year and this year we received five. All of them are on display and available for auction.”

The entire banner program has been the brainchild of Newport businesswoman Veronica Lundell.

“She started the project and continues every year,” Sigglekow said. “She coordinates every detail and works tirelessly to raise money for youth arts in our community.”

Sadly, Lundell fell from a ladder recently and sustained serious injuries that required emergency hospitalization and subsequent inpatient rehabilitation. A GoFundMe page has been established on her behalf at www.gofundme.com/f/ veronica-lundell.

Author tackles age-old question Red hats will be welcome when Oregon author and blogger Andrea Carlisle reads from her new book, “There Was an Old Woman” at Newport Public Library this Saturday, Nov. 4.

Carlisle isn’t struggling with her new identity as the Old Woman in the way society seems to think she should. In fact, she is finding her later years to be an extraordinary and interesting time. In a voice that rings with clarity, humor and humility, she shows us that old age is not another country where we can expect to find the Old Woman grimly waiting, but is instead an expansion of the borders in the country we’re most familiar with: ourselves.

Carlisle taught fiction and nonfiction for the Oregon Writers’ Workshop and other writing organizations in Oregon and Washington. Her work has been published in literary journals, newspapers, magazines, anthologies and by independent presses. Her popular blog about her mother, “Go Ask Alice… When She’s 94” brought attention to aging and caregiving before they became

subjects of national interest. She has received fellowships from the Oregon Institute of Literary Arts and the Oregon Arts Commission.

The reading will be both in-person and broadcast via Zoom from 2 to 3:30 pm.

Curious about the way the arts can support a local economy? A special presentation on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Newport Performing Arts Center will reveal data to indicate the social and economic impacts of Lincoln County arts and culture.

Randy Cohen, vice president of research at Americans for the Arts, will explore the way that arts and culture drive commerce to local businesses, strengthen visitor economy, build empathy and understanding, spark creativity and innovation, create pride in community and more.

Organizations throughout Lincoln County took part in a landmark study, actively polling

audiences and event guests to help provide meaningful data specific to the Central Oregon Coast. Data includes evidence that the non-profit arts and culture sector is a significant industry in Lincoln County — one that generated $50.1 million in total economic activity throughout 2022.

A short reception period, beginning at 3:30 pm, will provide social interaction, networking and refreshments before the presentation gets underway at 4 pm.

Talented North Coast bakers from several local community food establishments are supporting Food Roots by donating artistic and scrumptious pies. All pies auctioned through this fund-raiser are 100-percent tax deductible, and all sales support Food Roots’

efforts to create a vibrant local food system for the benefit of the North Coast.

Tasty treats range from savory to sweet, comfort classics to inventive and unique.

Choose from unique delights like pumpkin cheesecake with a hazelnut crust and sour cream topping, gluten-free cranberry walnut tart, or chocolate peanut butter and coconut cream pie.

Longtime favorites like apple, pumpkin and chicken pot pie will help fill out the menu.

Marine debris retreat washes up in Wheeler Heart of Cartm, the North County’s home base for artful waste reduction, is recycling last year’s popular Marine Debris Transformation Retreat.

This year’s immersive and inspiring event will take place this Friday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 5, providing a unique opportunity for anyone passionate about coastal conservation, art and positive change.

Marine debris is a pressing issue affecting communities worldwide. At this retreat, marine debris becomes a symbol of transformation. Whether you’re an artist, a scientist or someone who simply cares about the coastline, this weekend promises to be a catalyst for change. Guests will create powerful works of art and writing that can inspire change.

Estuary Trivia Night will offer guests the chance to brush up on their environmental knowledge while supporting the Campaign for Oregon’s Estuaries at the Taphouse at Nye Creek this Friday, Nov. 3.

This free, fun-filled evening of estuarythemed knowledge, community engagement and fun is sponsored by Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition.

Estuaries play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change, making them a cornerstone of environmental conservation.

Over the past year, the group has been deeply involved in strengthening the newly updated Yaquina Bay and Coos Bay Estuary Management Plans. Now, the group is turning

its attention to the adoption process and promoting public participation in upcoming hearings.

The trivia night will raise awareness about this vital campaign and funds to support efforts to protect Oregon’s estuaries.

Participants can form teams of up to six to test their knowledge and win exciting prizes.

Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase art, merchandise and raffle tickets.

One dollar of every pint sold during the evening will be donated to Oregon Shores.

The Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease Program will be offered both in-person and online, starting Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Newport 60+ Activity Center.

Walk With Ease is a structured walking program that teaches participants how to safely make physical activity part of their everyday life and helps people living with arthritis better manage their pain. It is also ideal for people without arthritis who want to make walking a daily habit.

Individuals can choose to do the program on their own with the help of a workbook or join others in a six-week group series led by a certified leader. During the program, participants will learn proper stretching and pain management techniques, as well as build stamina and walking pace. The program can even be modified to meet the needs of individual participants so that each person can develop an exercise routine that fits their

unique goals.

“Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs and bones,” said Bryn McCornack, Walk With Ease certified instructor. “Walking can also help manage weight which can reduce one’s risk for arthritis in the knee, heart disease and diabetes. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you will most likely have success with Walk With Ease.”

This free program is open to anyone aged 50 or older. Pre-registration is required.

Neskowin hosts chamber quartet

The Three Bs are A-OK

Join the Newport Symphony Orchestra for a performance of pieces by “The Three B’s:” Beethoven, Barber and Bloch, this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 5, at the Newport Performing Arts Center.

This November Concert Series presentation features Grammy Award-winning soloist, Johnny Gandelsman performing the heavenly Beethoven “Violin Concerto op. 61,” Samuel Barber’s “Symphony No. 1” and Ernest Bloch’s “Poems of the Sea.” Beethoven “Violin Concerto, op. 61” Performed in three movements, the orchestra goer can hear a significant opening introduction by the orchestra before the violin makes its first appearance to the listener’s ear, initially being ushered in with timpani.

Soon after, you might hear that well-known Beethoven tension with repeating chords that seem to hit that particular spot in the heart where one feels things — this piece embodies everything humans love about this era of music.

Barber “Symphony No. 1” Typical Barber compositions make us think of beautiful and rich strings. In contrast, this symphony brings a different complexity to the listener, often quickly bouncing back and forth between minor and

major sections. The symphony is performed in one movement, yet it contains all the various transitions, the beauty of different moods and the musical changes of a many movement symphony.

Bloch “Poems of the Sea” The piece explores the feelings of Bloch, who spent his golden years as a resident of Newport’s Agate Beach. This piece has a beautiful way of using winds after intense string sections to bring the listener into different spaces of recognizing the beauty and calmness after a storm.

Written in three movements: Waves, Chanty and At Sea, it’s clear these pieces mean to evoke the beauty and ruggedness of the sea and all of its inhabitants.

Saturday’s concert begins with a talk by conductor Adam Flatt at 6:45 pm, followed by the music at 7:30 pm. Sunday’s concert begins at 2 pm. After each concert, guests are invited to a Wine-Down, featuring snacks and wine from Flying Dutchman Winery.

Tickets are $44.25 to $69.75 or $15.50 for students.

Musicians roll into Bay City The Bay City Arts Center wil see an invasion of live music this Saturday, Nov. 4, with a concert double-header.

Local indie pop quartet Hope Montgomery & The Invasive Species will be the headlining act, led by the mesmerizing Hope Montgomery herself, with Charlie Wooldridge on lead guitar, Geoff Fielder on bass and Levi Timm on drums. Their music delves into sonic explorations of complex emotional turbulence, complimented by catchy melodic phrasing that makes people want to get up and dance.

This event will celebrate the release of Montgomery’s new album, “Lose Your Cool.” Opening act Katelyn Convery has also recently released an album. “Miles Awake” boasts polished lyrics and sophisticated soundscapes, backed by a group of distinguished

musicians and co-produced with bandmate and collaborator Timothy Karplus. Bittersweet angst and optimism weave through Convery’s music, piercing the frontier of modern alt-rock, and harkening back to the edgy era o ’90s Northwest grunge, with textures characteristic of early 2000s indie-pop. Born and raised in Oregon, Katelyn now splits time between Portland and the Oregon Coast.

The Bay City Arts Center is a multi-faceted community hub that encompasses a workshop, gallery, performance space, dining hall and radio station, all housed within a historic downtown building.

Germany’s Mandelring Quartet will present the next concert in the Neskowin Chamber Music series this Sunday, Nov. 5 at Camp Winema.

Siblings Nanette (violin), Sebastian (violin) and Bernhard Schmidt (cello) will be joined by violist Andreas Willwohl.

In its more than 40 years as a musical ensemble, Mandelring has appeared in concert venues all over Europe and the United States, from Vienna, London and Madrid to New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver.

Its members have won numerous competitions, starting with one in Munich that launched their careers. They give an annual festival in their hometown of Neustadt-on-the Weinstrasse. Since 2010, the quartet has presented a regular concert series in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic.

“Wherever these four musicians appear, they leave behind lasting musical impressions,” wrote the Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper about one of their concerts, calling it “a memorable festival experience not likely to be equaled in the near future.” The Spanish magazine Scherzo called their performances “poetry in sound.”

The Mandelring has performed cycles of the complete chamber music for strings of Mendelssohn and Brahms. It has played all fifteen Shostakovich string quartets at the Salzburg Festival and in Berlin. In 2020-2021, it performed in the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and a number of times at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Sunday’s concert begins at 3 pm at Camp Winema, located three miles north of Neskowin, just off Highway 101.

At last! It’s First Weekend Toledo celebrates its artistic community with open houses and receptions

S

cenes from the Big Apple will be among the art on display in the small mill town of Toledo this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 5, as the arts community celebrates another First Weekend.

The monthly event sees the town’s galleries and studios throw open their doors, offering the public a chance to meet local artists and chat about their latest works.

The Yaquina River Museum of Art will be displaying “The New York Experience: A Multi-media Event,” an interactive exhibition by local photographer David Jordan. This series of photographs from around New York City demonstrates Jordan’s ability to capture the feeling and vibrancy of a cityscape. Beyond the visual, Jordan felt it necessary to fully immerse the viewer in the exhibition through sound.

“When looking at scenes from New York City, I realized there was something missing that I had personally experienced,” he said, “so I present the images with a soundscape of the city.”

The soundscape sets the big-city scene, with subways passing, people talking, buskers, sirens, vehicles and more.

“The New York Experience” is available to view from noon to 4 pm Saturday and Sunday at 151 NE Alder Street. Jordan will deliver a talk about his work during Saturday’s champagne reception, starting at 1:30 pm. For more information, go to yaquinarivermuseumofart.org.

Across the street at Michael Gibbons’ Signature Gallery, visitors can view “The New and the Old.” The late artist painted the piece on site at Schreiner’s Iris Farm in Keizer during one of his annual trips to capture the beauty of the flowers in May and June. Gibbons believed barns are an important part of Oregon’s history and wanted to capture as many as he could on canvas.

His use of subtle colors on the flowers and barn leave the impression of aging beauty surrounded by the drama of the Oregon landscape.

Located at 140 NE Alder Street, Michael Gibbons’ Signature Gallery is open from noon to 4 pm both days of First Weekend.

On Main Street, Crow’s Nest Gallery & Studio will feature the works of more than 20 artists. The gallery-space run by assemblage artist Janet Runger always features new and exciting works for viewers to see. Award-winning photographer Sylvia Hosie captures viewers with her detailed images of bison and horses, as well as dreamy northwest landscapes, which make the viewer feel as though they could step through the frame and enter a different world. Veta Bakhtina, features her folkloric oil paintings; Alice Haga, fused glass; Val Bolen, tile and ceramic pieces; Paula Teplitz, sculptural jellyfish mobiles; Jeff Gibford, digitally manipulated photographs; Tish Epperson, watercolors; and Susan Jones, woven fiber jellyfish.

Crow’s Nest Gallery & Studio is located at 305 N. Main Street and open from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, on Graham Street, Ivan Kelly Studio and Gallery will display “Boom,” an oil vignette of Oregon Coast ocean waves crashing against the rocks.

Kelly, a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists, is currently exhibiting his work “Yaquina Head Looking North” at the American Society of Marine Artists Public Art Museum Tour in Albany, New York.
