By Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY
Yes, Argentine superstar Leo Messi has moved to Major League Soccer where he is now scoring goals for fun with Inter Miami. But the real soccer news is, of course, the return of Lincoln City Parks and Recreation Soccer for a glorious fall season.
Oregon Coast TODAY is again proud to sponsor a team in this wholesome endeavor, with yours truly dutifully marching around with a clipboard, hollering encouragement and generally doing my best impersonation of a coach.
Assistant Publisher Quinn has dusted off his cleats and taken up position at the heart of defense, resolutely spoiling the plans of anyone who even so much as glances at our goal with the ball at their feet.
Thanks to co-coach Josh Zantello for catching this image of Quinn and myself engaged in what could possibly be tactical instruction, but was more realistically a discussion about how much we were looking forward to the post-game donuts.
Best of luck to all for a great season.

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Heat olive oil in skillet over medium heat. Add chopped zucchini, carrot, onion, and garlic. Saute until onions are translucent and vegetables begin to soften, about 7-10 minutes. Remove from heat. While the vegetables are cooking, mix together ricotta and egg, then mix in fresh spinach so that it creates a paste-like mixture. Set aside.
Grease a 9x13 pan. Pour a small amount of marinara sauce on the bottom of the pan and top with four noodles. The noodles may need to overlap some.
Top the noodles with half of the ricottaspinach mixture, and half of the sauteed
vegetables. Then layer again with marinara, noodles, the remaining ricottaspinach mixture, remaining sauteed vegetables, and some marinara. Layer 4 more noodles and remaining marinara, then top with mozzarella. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in oven for 40 minutes covered and then uncovered for another 10 minutes.

Aday at the beach — delightful. But c’mon, beige sand and a blue sky above a blue ocean — couldn’t this place use a little color?
Well, brace yourself for the arrival of all the colors of the rainbow this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23 and 24, as Lincoln City’s Fall Kite Festival returns for another vibrant and eye-catching display.

Local artists Catherine Hingson and Sarah Hawklin are sharing a Spotlight Show running through Sept. 29 at Newport’s Yaquina Art Association Gallery.
Sarah Hawklin’s art journey began very early, with the opportunity to investigate many techniques under the tutelage of Israeli artist Sahara Sandow. Ultimately, this type of learning helped to develop an eye for creativity and the confidence to try new experiences.
The artistic path took a sidetrack in high school, where she fell down the rabbit hole of science, coming out the end to pursue a career as a veterinarian for more 30 years.
During that time, Hawklin continued her love of multimedia: glass work, such as stained glass, lamp work and fusion glass; as well as silversmithing; beading; and lapidary.
Retirement from veterinary practice freed enough time for Hawklin to pursue a whole new set of creative skills. Oil painting began as the favorite, but recently watercolor and experimentation with clay, both polymer and ceramic, have been added to the list.
Catherine Hingson draws on local coastal and Pacific Northwest themes to create vivid, impressionistic scenes inspired by the outdoors.
“My landscapes of the Pacific Northwest are a reflection of the natural beauty that surrounds me,” she said, “and I especially love to paint marine themes near my home at the coast.”
Hingson is known as a multi-media artist whose often-bold work is done in watercolor, pastel, oil and acrylic. She believes her art depicts the complications of life through a combination of color, texture and symbolism. Also an active teacher, Hingson encourages her students to simply “play” with the paint
Art in the Spotlight
while she facilitates their exploration of the medium. In the same way, she allows her paintbrush to playfully interact, keeping a vibrant freshness until completion. She finds most of each painting is created before it is begun on a surface. It is at that point the interest, feelings and symbols emerge first as sketches and then layers of training about composition, value and technique are used to produce a final product.
The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive. Hours of operation are 11 am to 4 pm every day.

Come along for the Pride in Newport
A Super Queer Fun Fair, a Human Library, jazzy bras and drag bingo will all be on offer when BRIDGES of Pride comes to Newport this Saturday, Sept. 23.
This series of fun events is being co-hosted by the Newport Recreation Center, the Newport 60+ Activity Center, Newport Public Library and the Newport Performing Art Center along with Newport Pride.
A Major talent
Mozart’s effervescent “Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major” will fill the Newport Performing Arts Center this weekend as the Newport Symphony Orchestra welcomes pianist Ben Kim to the coast.
Kim’s two concerts, this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23 and 24, will also feature Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 2, o. 36,” and “Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis,” written by Vaughan Williams.
Kim’s performances have been praised by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as “practically euphoric and filled with vitality.”
He has garnered critical acclaim for performances at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall and the Kennedy Center; and with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio, Seoul Philharmonic and St Petersburg Hermitage State Symphonies.
Born and raised in Portland, Kim began studying piano at age five with Dorothy Fahlman. He made his solo debut at the age of eight and his orchestral debut at 12.
At the age of 20, he received his bachelor’s degree at the Peabody Conservatory as a student of Leon Fleisher. He continued his studies at Peabody with Mr. Fleisher together with Yong Hi Moon after graduating.
Kim’s career took flight after he won first prize at the prestigious ARD Munich International Music Competition for Piano in 2006.
In 2014 he was one of six recipients selected among a pool of more than 13,000 graduates at the Johns Hopkins University to be awarded an Outstanding Recent Graduate Award for outstanding achievement or service in any professional field.
A longtime member of the German Alpine Society (Deutsche Alpenverein), Kim resides in Berlin.
This weekend’s performances, conducted by Adam Flatt, will take place at 7 pm on Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday at 777 W. Olive Street.
Tickets are available at www.newportsymphony.org.
Head to the pub this Saturday
The Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area will throw open its gates this Saturday, Sept. 23, to celebrate National Public Lands Day with a variety of service projects and other outdoor activities. National Public Lands Day is designed as a day to encourage families to get outside and to learn about and enjoy their public lands.
Visitors to Yaquina Head will be able to choose from several hour-long public service projects scheduled throughout the day, including working in the historic garden, a beach clean-up and
more. Each project is family-friendly, and each participant will receive a free t-shirt and voucher to any federal park, while supplies last.
There will also be educational activities and games for anyone who comes in, so there are things to do even for those who don’t have time to volunteer for a service project.
Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is located just north of Newport at 750 NW Lighthouse Drive.
The Super Queer Fun Fair runs from 11 am to 3 pm at the Newport Recreation Center, featuring activities for people of all ages, music, a photo booth and music from VDJ Osorio. The Newport Recreation Center is located at 225 SE Avery Street. There is no charge to attend.
The recreation center will also be home to The Human Library from noon to 2 pm. This is an opportunity for guests to select a person who has agreed to share their unique, personal perspective and lived experience in a one-toone, 30-minute dialogue. You select the person you would like to learn more about, make your reservation and open your mind. Questions will be provided to help you along, and the human books have prepared some talking points to share with you.
And be sure to stop by the BraVa! table at the recreation center between 11 am to 3 pm to decorate a bra in support of local breast cancer patients. Decorated bras will be displayed at the Newport Visual Arts Center throughout October and auctioned in early November to raise funds for Lincoln County breast cancer patients through CoastBusters. Supplies and bras to decorate will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
After the Super Queer Fun Fair concludes at 3 pm, walk across the street to the Newport 60+ Activity Center for Drag Bingo hosted by Mulan Rouge. This bingo with a twist is a fun, family-friendly event open to all. Bingo cards are a dollar each and fabulous prizes will be awarded to the lucky winners.

Pride events are not just big, rainbow-hued parties. They are also a time for celebrating change, working toward a more positive future and breaking down barriers for people in the LGBTQ+ community.
And the second annual Newport Oregon Pride aims to have some fun doing it. Running from Friday, Sept. 22, through Sunday, Sept. 24, the celebration includes an ’80s themed night, Drag Bingo, a friends and family picnic and more.
“We have some of the same things as last year that were very successful, like the Super Queer Fun Fair,” Board Secretary Kathy Redwine said. “But this year we have a few new things too like a 5k walk/run and the Drag Bingo. We’ll be having some drag kings and queens from the valley to help run bingo — it will be tons of fun. It will be free to get in and to play it’s a dollar a card. Most of the events are free to attend — we are trying to make it accessible as possible.”
The fun begins at 5 pm on Friday with Pub Night at Bier One Brewing, with beer, food and games. If you choose to follow the ’80s theme, arrive in your favorite neon prints, fringes and big hair.
Saturday will begin with a Pride Proclamation at Newport City Hall at 10:30 am, then go big with the Super Queer Fun Fair at the Newport Recreation Center, with vendors, businesses and resources beginning at 11 am.
“We will be giving away a lot of swag,” Redwine said. “There will be plenty of rainbow flags and other fun stuff.”
Drag Bingo, at the Newport 60+ Activity Center, will run from 3 to 5 pm, offering family-friendly fun with prizes up for grabs.
If you are still standing, end the day with the Fabulous Formal at Primaltones Community Venue.
The prom, with the theme “Purple Reign,” will begin at 7 pm with an all-ages dance and shift towards an adult-only event later in the evening, with live music by Glitterfox, Dj Grythm and late-night performances by Dixie DeLish and more.
Those that didn’t party too hard on Saturday can begin the day on Sunday at noon at the Newport Pride
Run, a 5K run or walk hosted by Ardor Adventures that starts and ends at the Yaquina Bay State Park.
Also at the state park beginning at noon is the more mellow Friends and Family Picnic.
Finally, the lively weekend wraps with the Pride Afterparty at Rogue Spirits Sunset Bar, with food, games and, of course, beer. One dollar from every pint sold will be donated to Newport Oregon Pride to support future events.
A newly formed non-profit, Newport Oregon Pride is “working toward a world in which LGBTQIA2S+ people are affirmed, respected and included in the full social and civic life of their local communities, free from fear of any discrimination, rejection and prejudice.”
Redwine, part of the queer community, said that events like these help her hope for a better world for not only her own generation, but for her daughter’s as well.
“We get together and celebrate how far we have come, but also to acknowledge the people we have lost along the way and also how far we still have to go,” she said. “Last year’s events were very successful, especially since it was our first one. We had people come from all walks of life. We definitely saw a ton of people from the queer community, but lots of families and allies too, it was really nice. There were so many more people than we expected.”
As June is LGBT Pride month, the bulk of organized Pride events fall within it.
“We decided to have ours in September because we didn’t want to conflict with bigger Pride events that people might want to attend,” Redwine said. “We also applied for some grants to get the first event going, and having it during the ‘shoulder’ season helped with that.”
The community has also stepped up to add to the weekend’s fun with Bridges of Pride, a slate of supporting events co-hosted by the Newport Recreation Center, the Newport 60+ Activity Center, Newport Public Library and the Newport Performing Arts Center. See page 8 for details.

Coral show is reefer rad-ness
For the past two years, a team of Pacific Northwest fabric artists have been building a coral reef one stitch at a time. And group members will display the fruits of their labors this Friday, Sept. 22, when the PNW Community Coral Reef Project unveils its installation at the Lincoln City Cultural Center.
Involving two solid years of sore backs and fingers, this room-sized fiber art coral reef is the work of more than 100 crocheters, knitters and felters. Working together, the artists produced corals and marine creatures to celebrate the diverse ecosystem of the coral reef and educate viewers about the effects of climate change and pollution.
Friday’s opening reception will run from 5 to 7 pm with a free screening of the OSU documentary “Saving Atlantis” at 7 pm. The installation will be on display through November 16.
For more information, go to www. coralknitfiberarts.com or email reef curator Christina Harkness at christinaharkness68@ gmail.com.

Easel-y does it this fall
Throughout the fall, the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is offering one-day, two-day and multi-week visual arts classes at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
First, on Tuesday, Sept. 26, adults 21 and over are invited to register for a “Stencils and Masks” workshop led by Wendy Schwartz, as part of the Passport to Art hands-on, introductory learning series. In this onenight-only workshop, participants will learn multiple techniques to create stencils and masks, then experiment using them on gel plates. The cost is $45, and materials and refreshments are included.
Two one-day workshops led by Liz Fox on Saturday, Oct. 7, and Saturday Oct. 14, will offer participants aged 16 and older a chance to create a Thanksgiving Platter using clay, leaves and colored slips. No pottery experience necessary. Classes run from 1 to 4 pm. The cost is $125, and materials are included.
The next Passport to Art offering for those aged 21 and over will take place on October 17, followed on October 21 by a session for adults and youth in 6th grade or above. Susan Jones will teach participants how to create woven spheres, exploring reed-weaving while creating fun, colorful objects that can be used in home decor or as ornaments. The cost is $45, and materials and refreshments are included.
Jones will also lead a two-day workshop on Wednesdays, Nov. 1 and 8, where participants
aged 17 and above can make their own seagrass baskets. Students will learn to weave a functional, fanciful basket while exploring the strength and flexibility of seagrass. Classes run from noon to 4 pm. The cost of this course is $150, and materials are included.
From October 19 to November 30, creatives and would-be creatives aged 16 and over can attend a six-week course entitled “Beginning Drawing: Drawing from Life” with Carol Shenk. This Thursday evening workshop is designed for those new to drawing from life, people who believe they “can’t” draw, and those who just want a fresh perspective. No previous experience is required. Sessions run from 5 to 8 pm. The cost of the course is $215 and all materials are included. There is no class on November 23.
And finally, on Sundays from October 29 through December 3, Shenk will offer a “Drawing as a Practice” course for artists aged 16 and older. This seminar-format workshop is crafted for those who want to expand their approaches to drawing and incorporate a sketchbook practice into their creative thinking. Classes run from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. The cost for this course is $125. There is no class on November 26.
To learn more about any of these classes or their instructors, go to www.coastarts.org/ adult-art- classes. Register early, as class sizes are limited. Some scholarships are available.
For details, contact Sara Siggelkow, OCCA arts engagement manager, at 541-574-3364 or ssiggelkow@coastarts.org.

Have the stein of your life
Fall on the Oregon Coast requires a few wardrobe essentials — a fleece vest to maintain core temperature, a light jacket to fend of rain showers and, of course, lederhosen for proper beer appreciation.
These hardwearing Bavarian leather shorts are the outfit of choice for OktoberCrest, Beachcrest Brewing’s annual salute to the homeland of hops.
Returning for its fifth year this Friday, Sept. 22, through Sunday, Sept. 24, the celebration promises multiple fall beer releases, German-inspired food specials, live music and merrymaking for all.
Throughout the weekend, guests will also be invited
to test the strength of their drinking arms by taking part in the stein hoisting contest. This traditional Bavarian contest sees competitors hold a full liter beer stein straight in front of their bodies, with arms at full stretch. The last person standing in position is the winner.
OktoberCrest will run from noon to 8 pm on Friday, Sept. 22, and Saturday, Sept. 23; and from noon to 7 pm on Sunday, Sept. 24. Beachcrest Brewing Company is located in the Salishan Marketplace, 7755 Highway 101, just south of Lincoln City. For more information, go to beachcrestbrewing.com.
For Monday, Sept. 25, at least, the answer is anyone who makes the trip to Tillamook to take part in The Saga Project, a sculptural ceramic workshop for kids and families taking place at the Fairview Grange. Workshop participants will get to create Medieval-style press tiles representing Norse myth and legends, such as Thor, Odin, Loki and Sif, along with many symbols from Nordic and Viking culture.
Every participant will receive a ceramic Thor’s Hammer, and the first 10 families will also get a Yule tile featuring Nisse, the Christmas gnome famous in Sweden and Denmark.
Running from 4 to 6:30 pm, the workshop is free, but a $10 donation is suggested to help pay for kiln services. Smaller children are encouraged to have parents help. Fairview Grange is located at 5520 3rd Street in Tillamook. To book a spot, call 503-801-0603. A second workshop will be held in October
On Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9 and 10, the Oregon Coast Children’s Center for the Arts & Theatre will present “Toy Theatre Project & Introduction to Puppetry Arts.”
Throughout this two-day workshop, students will work in five forms of puppetry and, at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 10, get to enjoy a puppet show of “The Tortoise and the Hare,’’ based on Aesop’s fables.
The workshop will run from 4 to 6:30 pm at Fairview Grange, 5520 3rd Street, Tillamook. For more information, call 503-801-0603.
Throughout October the group will also be offering the chance to work on Day of the Dead ofrendas at a series of Artful Monday workshops.
Running from 4 to 6:30 pm on Monday, Oct. 2, 16, 23 and 30, these workshops give kids and families the chance to work on these ceramic family altars and get them ready for the big day. For more information, call 503-801-0603.
The workshop is presented by the Oregon Coast Children’s Center for the Arts & Theatre, which has created several productions dealing with Scandinavian heritage. The group has toured Denmark and Sweden with performances at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, as well as numerous festivals all over the Western US.
