Thu 4 September – Sat 4 October 2014 To commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the Octagon presents one of the greatest war plays ever written: Journey’s End. Excited by the prospect of adventure and inspired by a determination to serve his country, eighteen-year-old Second Lieutenant Raleigh has arrived in the trenches. He is thrilled to find himself under the command of Captain Stanhope his boyhood hero and a close family friend. But after three years commanding his company Stanhope is a changed man.

The futility of warfare, constant fear, and the death of so many close comrades have driven him to whisky to help him endure the daily horrors. Raleigh’s arrival only serves to remind him of a life that is now long gone – a life when he was young, with hope, a future, and in love.

Based on RC Sherriff’s own experience of the First World War, Journey’s End is written with the authenticity and compassion of a soldier who was intimately acquainted with the nightmare of life in the trenches, and the extraordinary courage of those who fought there.

Continuing the Octagon’s commemoration of the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, Early One Morning tells the true story of 26-year-old soldier James Smith from Bolton.

Flanders, August 21st 1917. British forces advancing towards Passchendaele are struggling through driving rain and mud. The fighting is fierce and bloody. Each day thousands are killed, wounded or lost to oblivion.

Two miles behind the front line a Field General Court Martial begins. Private James Smith of the King’s Liverpool Regiment is charged with desertion.

This is the moving and compelling story of a Bolton soldier, who for three years has been fighting in some of the fiercest battles of the First World War. He has been wounded, received two Good Conduct Medals, and been promoted. He is now on trial for his life.

Over 300 British soldiers were shot at dawn during the First World War. In 2006 they were granted a pardon that recognised them to be as much victims of war as the soldiers who died in battle. And at last, 92 years after his death, Private James Smith’s name was entered in Bolton’s Roll of Honour of soldiers who died in the Great War. Early One Morning was commissioned and first produced by the Octagon in 1998. It is written by Bolton playwright Les Smith, who was co-writer of the hugely popular Bolton Wanderers play And Did Those Feet, last produced at the Octagon in 2010.

Longshoreman Eddie Carbone lives with his wife and niece in a tight-knit American-Italian neighbourhood in 1950’s Brooklyn. Eddie works, goes bowling, looks after his family and hopes for a better future for his orphaned niece, Catherine - raised by him and his wife Beatrice as their own.

In a community where family comes first, Eddie welcomes Beatrice’s cousins into their cramped apartment, two illegal immigrants desperate to earn money to send back to their impoverished families in Sicily. But Eddie soon finds himself battling with his inner demons in a personal struggle that could ultimately tear his family apart.

One of Arthur Miller’s greatest plays, A View from the Bridge is powerful, gripping, witty, and profoundly moving. This is the third Arthur Miller play directed for the Octagon by David Thacker who had a close working relationship with the playwright.

Following the success of Hobson's Choice, the Octagon presents another famous, great Northern play: Hindle Wakes.

It's the end of the Wakes weekend in the fictitious mill town of Hindle in Lancashire, just before the outbreak of the First World War. Mill worker Fanny Hawthorn and mill owner’s son Alan Jeffcote are returning home after a weekend alone together in a Llandudno hotel - kept secret from their parents, and from Alan's fiancée Beatrice.

But when a dramatic turn of events exposes their deception they find themselves in conflict with both sets of parents. Faced with the pressure to ‘become an honest woman’ Fanny is determined to pursue her own future.

Like Hobson’s Choice, Hindle Wakes is funny, compelling and extraordinarily authentic in its depiction of Lancashire life at the time. One of the first plays to have a working class female central character, it was considered to be hugely controversial when first performed, championing the role of women as they embarked on a new era of independence and freedom.

One night, three old friends who have known each other for forty years discover an ancient book that offers up the secret of youth. Within its dusty pages the book reveals a series of rituals, that if followed sincerely and with absolute diligence - promise nothing less than to turn back the clock and give them youth once again.

Jim Cartwright is an international award-winning playwright and one of Bolton’s own. His work is amongst the most performed in the Octagon’s history, including Road, Two, Eight Miles High, Bed & Baths and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice which played to sell-out audiences in 2012.

Revealing the backstage shenanigans of a theatre company in the throes of ‘putting on a show’, Noises Off is a riotous comedy following the cast and crew as they tour their cheeky farce ‘Nothing On’. Battling against all the odds they’re desperately trying to make sure that, whatever happens, the show must go on!

Noises Off received Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy, playing in both the West End and Broadway. First produced in London in 1982, it was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 1983, and adapted for the silver screen in the 1992 film version starring Michael Caine.

We launched our ‘Little Bridges’ programme, opening up new experiences and opportunities to young people with learning disabilities, allowing their confidence, communication and social skills to grow and develop.

Donations meant that 38 young people were provided with free places to take part in a range of activities, including performances, workshops and training and development programmes.

Through our ‘Best of Bolton’ scheme we worked with 45 local playwrights to help them develop their skills and provided opportunities to work with professional authors, directors and actors.

All these things were achieved because of our incredible donors.

Your donation will really make a difference to who we are and what we do.

We gave 1800 free tickets to families from Bolton, allowing them to experience live theatre for the very first time.

Hobson’s Choice and An Inspector Calls broke box office records and became the best-selling shows in the Octagon’s history.

The Octagon is situated in the heart of the town centre, opposite the Library and Museum.

Non-performance days: 9am – 5.30pm We are closed Sundays

We are a five minute walk from the train and bus stations.

Wheelchair Users/ Customers with mobility impairment: The Octagon has a flat foyer and entrance and an accessible toilet on this level. Access to the bar and auditorium is via the lift. There are stairs in the auditorium. Please mention any access requirements when booking and book wheelchair spaces in advance. There is a disabled parking bay close to the theatre entrance.

The Octagon has an infra-red hearing system. Via a headset, sound is slightly amplified for customers with or without hearing aids. Please pre-book headsets with Box Office staff. See show pages for British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted performances and mention when booking.

Blind and visually impaired customers: Audio-Described performances offer a live commentary via a headset. See show pages for dates and book your headset with the Box Office. Let us know if you are bringing a guide dog - it can stay with you in the auditorium or be looked after by staff. A touch tour is available before the described performance. More information about our touch tours, including video footage and commentary from our Audio Describer, is available at www.octagonbolton.co.uk and on CD, just ask our Box Office staff for a copy.

We accept cheques and major credit/debit cards. There is a 50p charge to post tickets.

Please note we do not offer refunds. Tickets may however be exchanged or a credit note given if tickets are returned to us 24 hours before the performance. A £1 exchange fee applies.
