This year we are launching a unique degree in Theatre with the University of Bolton which will not only support the next generation of theatre professionals but provide investment in productions for all audiences to enjoy.

David Thacker, who has been outstanding as our Artistic Director for the past six years, is now stepping down to take on a new role as Professor of Theatre at the University.

WELCOME TO THE NEW 20152016 SEASON AT THE OCTAGON It is my pleasure to introduce this programme of plays and let you know about the many exciting developments taking place at the Octagon.

Whilst our productions on stage continue to go from strength to strength, our work off stage is also extending far further into communities, schools, colleges and other theatres. We are proud to be a place where ideas and imaginations grow for so many people. In order for us to continue to thrive it it is vital that we update our building and we have already begun ambitious plans for a redevelopment ensuring it remains fit for purpose, is fully accessible for all, and has more facilities for children and young people.

I’m delighted to announce that Elizabeth Newman will succeed David as Artistic Director. Of course Elizabeth is no stranger to Bolton audiences, having been Associate Director here for several years. She is currently planning her first line-up of productions, which will be announced this autumn.

Already it promises to offer compelling stories and wonderful theatrical moments, produced with a range of world-class theatre makers.

As we look to an exciting future it feels appropriate to reflect and celebrate the Theatre’s past. This season of productions draws upon many of the talents and hallmarks of the Octagon’s previous work, and in particular, we showcase Bolton’s most famous playwrights Bill Naughton and Jim Cartwright. Productions of The Family Way, Two and the world premiere of its sequel Two 2 all have their roots in Bolton, as does the bittersweet comedy Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis, which premiered at the Octagon sixteen years ago.

The Octagon’s reputation for classic drama is set to continue with Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, adapted by Arthur Miller and staged to coincide with the Miller centenary.

And we are reviving our association with the works of Roald Dahl with a new production of The BFG which I’m sure will delight all ages.

At the Octagon we’re passionate about making theatre accessible for everyone. This season we’re continuing to provide relaxed performances, which offer a welcoming environment for a wide range of people, particularly those with an autistic spectrum condition or learning disability. And we are also introducing regular captioned performances. Captioning displays the words on screen and gives access to deaf and hard of hearing customers. You can find more information about both captioned and relaxed performances on pages 28 and 29.

We also have a varied programme of additional events, including new plays, music and children’s theatre: all selected to provide a rich variety of experiences for all of our audiences.

I look forward to seeing you at the Octagon soon, and sharing this wonderful journey with you.

Bill Naughton’s The Family Way is a funny and intimate portrayal of life, family, and love in 1960s Bolton. This social comedy illuminates the complex relationships within families, and the tender and precious ties that exist between parents and their children.

Bill Naughton’s work has enjoyed huge success on both the stage and screen; he captured iconic cool in the world famous Alfie, and celebrated Bolton in local favourite Spring and Port Wine which is still one of the Octagon’s bestselling shows in its almost 48 year history. In 1966 The Family Way received critical acclaim when it was released as a feature film starring real life father and daughter, John and Hayley Mills.

Under the illusion that he will be a hero, Stockmann publicly announces his findings but is immediately faced with opposition from those with vested interests, and even his own brother the Mayor - when the economic future of the community is suddenly placed under threat. In his struggle to do the right thing, Dr Stockmann risks destroying his own career and sacrificing his family’s future.

An Enemy of the People is a compelling and gripping play that explores the conflict between the need to stand up for the truth when faced with the political and economic pressures that drive the agendas of those in power.

Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People was adapted by Arthur Miller in the 1950s during the repressive climate of the McCarthy witch hunts. In 1989 David Thacker worked on the play with Arthur Miller which was then presented at the Young Vic before transferring to the West End, initiating the start of a close working relationship between the pair.

The staging of this adaptation will form part of this year’s centenary celebrations, marking the anniversary of Arthur Miller’s birth on October 17th, 1915. On Sunday 1 November David Thacker will host an event discussing and exploring the work of Arthur Miller - see page 20 for details.

Unable to fall asleep in her bedroom in the village orphanage, Sophie spies a huge and mysterious figure blowing something into bedroom windows down the street. Before she has a chance to hide, the giant snatches up the little girl and whisks her away to his home in Giant Country. But this giant is unlike the others Sophie comes across in this exhilarating tale; the BFG is funny, friendly and full of surprises, and it’s not long before he and Sophie embark upon all sorts of exciting adventures, becoming best friends in the process!

From opening time to last orders, all walks of life pass through this pub, and the comings and goings are watched over by the all-seeing, and all knowing, proprietors - the landlord and landlady at the heart and soul of their local. So get yourself a drink and settle in, it’ll all be happening tonight…

First performed at the Octagon in 1989, the Sunday Times called the play a “brilliantly, surrealistically and comically poetic” piece. The production won the Manchester Evening News Best New Play Award before transferring to the Young Vic in London. Subsequently this ever popular play has been revived twice at the Octagon over the years.

Following the run of Two the Octagon will present a world premiere by Jim Cartwright of Two 2 - revisiting the same pub, with characters both old and new.

From the writer of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Bed, Road and Two comes the world premiere production of Two 2; Jim Cartwright’s brand new play that revisits the lives, loves and laughs of regulars in a Northern boozer.

In a suburban semi on a cold winters evening, a collection of family, friends and acquaintances gather to celebrate a fortieth birthday. There’s Josie, the forty year old dominatrix conducting business from her living room and in no mood to celebrate; her daughter Brenda-Marie with a wisdom beyond her years; Martha - Josie’s devout Irish cleaner who’s none the wiser and happy to keep it that way; and, of course, Lionel - Josie’s most loyal client with a heart of gold and a secret yearning to wear ladies dresses.

But no party would be complete without entertainment, and for once Josie has the night off. Elvis impersonator Timothy Wong has entered the building and only the arrival of a very unexpected guest could upstage the King himself.

Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis premiered at the Octagon Theatre in 1999 and was received with critical acclaim and regular standing ovations. Described by the Financial Times as “one of our most accomplished and entertaining young playwrights”, Charlotte Jones has created a quirky collection of characters whose worlds collide on one fateful night that could ultimately change all of their lives forever. The Lancashire Boys is a new project to commemorate the lives of the Bolton soldiers who fought in the First World War.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund this project is a partnership between the Octagon Theatre, DBBC (Diversity in Barrier-Breaking Communities) and Bolton Amateur Theatre Societies (BATS).

Over a period of one year four local writers have been selected to produce four one-act plays that have been directed by emerging talent from BATS. Using

actors from across thirty-two theatrical societies, this showcase event will be a remarkable collaboration in remembrance of the lives that were lost during the Great War.

Bernard Wrigley and The Oldham Tinkers – two of Lancashire’s best loved performers – are back by popular demand at the Octagon.

Director David Thacker, who had a close working relationship with Arthur Miller, will be joined by actors, theatre professionals and academics, including Christopher Bigsby; an award winning academic, novelist and biographer. Christopher has published some fifty books, including his recent twovolume biography of Arthur Miller.

The Oldham Tinkers will share their classic folk songs and world music, along with the very silly and entertaining stories that they're renowned for.

The Octagon is delighted to introduce regular captioned performances of our main season productions for the very first time! During captioned performances the spoken word is displayed on a unit to give access for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing customers. There will be a captioned performance for each of the main season plays, with details of the dates listed on the individual show pages in this brochure.

Relaxed Performances Fri 8 Jan 2016, 11am & 7pm Relaxed Performances are specifically designed to welcome into theatres people with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability, a sensory or communication need. Or indeed anyone who feels that they, or their family, would enjoy a more relaxed environment.

They have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere to reduce anxiety levels. There is a relaxed attitude to audience noise and movement, and small changes to the sound levels and lighting effects. There are also other provisions such as visual stories (an info pack emailed in advance with full details of what to expect), a chill-out space, and extra staff around to offer a helping hand.

All tickets for Relaxed Performances are £9.50 with free essential carer tickets for those with additional needs, plus 1 free ticket for every 10 tickets booked.
