How do we design for integration of city and residential life?

+ Spring 2024

+ In Collaboration with Nathan Faircloth

+ Studio Professor: Sonit Bafna

This multi-family housing project in Washington, D.C. takes inspiration from the interfacing and public vs private realms in the Ourq Jaures Social and Student Housing in France, the Aqua Tower in Chicago, and the Songpa Micro Housing in Seoul.

Elevating residential living, the residential units are raised to accommodate retail space and a public walkway beneath the building, aligning with zoning regulations. By integrating retail and a central courtyard, the design aims to activate the area and foster community connections while keeping the top floors as a space for residents to retreat from the bustling city life below.

SCALE: 1/16” = 1’-0”

The design utilizes the doughnut shape for shared interior circulation and uses the unique facade to create pockets of terraces on the exterior. While the ground floor offers public programs, the upper floors provides opportunity for more private connection through common rooms on the corners and a resident-only rooftop garden and track.

How do we revitalize an existing campus building?

+ Fall 2024

+ In Collaboration with Tiffany Fernandez & Valeria Ortega

+ Studio Professor: Daniel Baerlecken

This project revitalizes the architecture school’s atrium, bringing back the longawaited café as a central social hub, giving life to neglected areas, and featuring flexible galleries and pin-up spaces for presentations and events. The design retains the iconic parametric wood waterfall sculpture, inspiring a new wood wave ceiling that addresses acoustical issues. This project aims to create a vibrant, multifunctional hub for the entire student community.

This project explored the dynamic relationship between warped grids and compass-like needle forms inspired by Gothic windows. By introducing magnets into the grid, we studied how the needles could be “repelled” and distort the grid’s structure.

Through physical modeling, we layered punched paper sheets to observe how these interactions created weak points and dynamic properties such as buckling, and how light and shadow shifted across the surface. The study revealed unique material behaviors and led to the translation of these 2D sheets into 3D forms, offering new insights into how form and material can interact in architectural design.

How can design balance nature and comfort?

+ Spring 2022

+ Independent & Partnered Project

+ Studio Professor: Yousef Bushehri

This nature retreat is situated in Macon, Georgia, serving as a sanctuary to rest, reconnect with nature, as well as try quality southern cuisine. Tasked with not only designing a 250 and 350 sqft. cottage but also the site of the retreat. The site design was dictated by the program was given by a client and designed in collaboration with Crystal Le and Jolena Ager while the cottages were designed individually.

Nestled in a serene natural setting, this retreat offers a peaceful sanctuary from everyday life. The site features cottages thoughtfully placed either by the tranquil lake or amidst the trees along scenic trails. How can we analyze an existing site using Climate Studio?

+ Fall 2023

The days last as long as 22 hours and 28 minutes in the summer and as short as 3 hours and 12 minutes in the winter.

December is the coolest month reaching -19.6 degrees Celcius while in July, the hottest month, reaches up to 19.8 degrees Celcius.

Being the strongest from fall to winter, the wind in the cold yet humid climate of Iceland can reach up to 17.2 m/s.

One strategy for a building in Iceland would be orienting windows on the south with shading to optimize sunlight in the winter and to shield against the sunlight in the summer.

Through studying the Bacardi Bottling Plant in Puebla, Mexico by Felix Candela and Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, Grasshopper and Kangaroo was used to recreate the building. After learning the language of the Bottling Plant, new designs and iterations were created by changing parameters to design a new pavilion.
