Swan Hellenic, Minerva – Friday 9 May 2014 Sally Jones and I were fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to see the Swan Hellenic owned, Minerva ship, docked in Portsmouth, which is just down the road from us in Southampton. A small ship catering for 350 guests, built with a big personality for the discerning traveller. When we boarded the Minerva, we were offered a welcome drink from the ship crew and made our way to the Internet lounge, where we were spoken to about Swan Hellenic and what they offer compared to other cruise lines. Once the talk had finished, we had the opportunity to be shown around the ship by a member of staff to show what the Minerva really had to offer its customers. Walking through the library, card room and Livingstone lounge, showed us the additional spaces they have on the Minerva to be able to relax with a good book or socialise with other passengers whilst playing cards. We then went to see the gym, which is fairly small, and the salon centre where you can arrange to have your hair cut or pay for any treatments whilst onboard. It was interesting to be able to see the price list for the treatments as they are very much the same price as what you would pay in the UK. As we went around several decks we were able to see the cabins available onboard the Minerva, this included both inside and outside as well as balcony cabins. The accommodation onboard was kept to a very high standard and the furniture they used had a home from home feel. Most cabins onboard the Minerva surprised us in terms of size, for instance they included an armchair, which is not often provided. The bathrooms were to be expected, similar to other cruise lines, however, they utilised the space very well especially in terms of the inside and outside cabins. The balcony cabins were fantastic. They had a brilliant amount of space on the balcony to enjoy, some even offered recliner chairs as well as wooden patio chairs. What was also lovely was the balcony floor. It had artificial grass, this made you really feel like you were sunbathing outside. We ventured out onto the deck and saw the swimming pool, the veranda restaurant and got a general feel for the amount of space given for sun loungers. A must see is the Orpheus Lounge, which is an observation lounge, this lounge is beautiful with large windows and a bar area, big enough to hold music evenings. Our visit ended with a 3 course meal in the Swan Restaurant. We were spoilt for choice for each course because there were such a variety of options. The Salmon starter, the Roast beef main course finished off with Strawberries for dessert, were just delicious. Swan Hellenic went over and beyond our expectations of what a cruise line can offer, so much is included within the price for example: A tailor-‐made shore excursion programme, all gratuities onboard and ashore, porterage of luggage, all meals included – open sitting dining and a selection of engaging onboard activities.
