Director’s Note
Do you love the 80’s? Do you love the Netflix series Stranger Things? Do you love things that are strange and silly? You are in the right place! If you came to see a very serious show about scary, spooky and dramatic things, you are looking for the Broadway play Stranger Things: The First Shadow which will open in 2025 in NYC. I’m not sure if you know this but Oceanside is not in New York. ANYWAY…
Looking at my entire career, Stranger Sings: The Parody Musical has been one of my favorite productions I’ve ever worked on, both on and off the stage. It has been truly an honor to stage the WEST COAST PREMIERE of this show after a run in New York Off Broadway. As an artist overall, I love to express myself through laughter and making people feel good. Even as a person outside of the theatre, I am a rambunctious, loud, fearless and bold entity. This RIDICULOUSLY over the top show is exactly all of that. It’s quite hard to separate the artist from the person so here we are. During rehearsals for this show, I have loved exploring comedic bits, creative staging, and just enjoying the process as a whole collaborating with both actors and the production team from day one. This show is OURS, not mine.
WARNING! This show contains the following: 80’s references, over the top storytelling and soaring vocals from the 8 person cast, a rocking 4 piece band led by musical director Eliza Vedar, groovin’ choreography by Alyssa “Ajay” Junious, immersive scenic elements from Reiko Huffman (who is OTC’s 2024 Resident Scenic Designer), incredibly mood altering lighting from Mashun Tucker, fun filled prop design from Nate Cargill, spot on iconic costumes by Zoë Trautmann, perfectly styled and campy wigs from Jeri Nicolas, perfectly balanced spooky & spoofy sound effects by Estefania Ricalde, the best live sound mixing I’ve heard in this building by Jordan Gray & Geronimo Omabtang, wonderfully fun yet somewhat creepy (in the best of ways) puppet design by Jordan Brownlee & Maribel Garcia, a totally reliable/“down for anything” assistant stage manager and nicknamed “the 9th actor” Tori Jones and a Taylor Swift & Broadway obsessed stage manager by the name of Ali Flores who is one of the best in the city (note: she has almost 26,000 followers and 4 million likes on TikTok *mic drop*).
I have quite literally been laughing at this show for over a month straight. This cast keeps it fresh everyday and that is the hardest thing to do with a comedy/parody like this. As usual in these director notes, the world is a dark and crazy place and we need shows like this. They remind me to try my best to live life to its best ability and enjoy what aspects I can. Remember to laugh as much as you can. There have been many pieces of this strange puzzle (pun intended) coming together within recent weeks but the last piece of the puzzle is YOU. I hope you are ready for 2 hours of nonstop laughter and a damn good time. #Justice4Barb
A couple Thank You’s: OTC’s Board, Staff and Volunteers, OTC’s Generous Donors & Supporters, Onstage Playhouse, Teatro San Diego, San Diego City College, Oceanside High School, the 1980’s as a whole, and my dog for crashing rehearsal that one time and running around the stage thinking she was the demogorgon……
