Bear killings number rises his year, B.C. conservation and law enforcement officers in Central Vancouver Island and the Alberni Valley have destroyed more than double the number of black bears they did in 2012. From April 1 to Nov. 21, officers destroyed 25 black bears, compared with nine for the same period in 2012. The number increased despite the fact that Qualicum Beach and Port Alberni have strategies in place to reduce conflicts with bears, such as bear resistant hardware on garbage containers and bear management plans. B.C. Conservation Officer Sgt. Ben York said the region is an anomaly in the province, as bear killings generally are down this year. “It’s the worst part of our job,” York said. “For the most part, [killing a black bear] is avoidable.” This year, 325 black bears were killed by conservation officers in B.C., compared with 460 in 2012. The 25 killed bears in the region had lost their fear towards humans, York said. “It’s a behaviour progression. Garbage and other attractants become low-risk to them,” he said. “Since the attractants are

Attractants include unsecured garbage containers, fruit left in trees, barbecues that not have been cleaned, pet food, bird feeders,
livestock feed, compost, garden produce and chicken coops. North Island Wildlife Recovery Association wildlife manager Robin Campbell explained that bears will get more calories from eating garbage in somebody’s alley than from foraging and
hunting in the wild. Conservation officers are often criticized as killers, but most officers hate that part of their job, York said. “I’ve seen officers in tears after dealing with bears,.” See BEAR, Page 2
