The Jennie Horne Cece Award Jennifer Matthews Raised at a time when education was thought unnecessary for girls, Jennie, a young girl of extraordinary intelligence, was withdrawn from school while in the 8th grade, having just enough education to enable her to work in the family store.

She never again had the chance for a formal education but studied all manner of subjects on her own.

u P hi Theta Kappa Honor Society The National Honor Society of two-year colleges. Any student who has earned at least 15 credit hours at OCC (excluding transfer and remedial credits) and has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.60 is eligible for membership and invited to join the organization.

 O CC College Academy Students who took OCC courses during their high school career.

The OCC College Academy allows students to earn their high school diploma while simultaneously earning enough credits to obtain an Associate Degree from Ocean County College in Liberal Arts.

Students recognized for Honors By Contract have taken at least four courses with Honors requirements, received a B or better in each of those courses, and are graduating with an overall grade point average of 3.5 or higher.



Students who have met eligibility for two degree programs must complete the second degree without repeating any previous courses in which credit was earned. No courses judged to be at a lower academic level than those previously completed will be used toward the second degree.

Graduates nominated by the campus community. These students are identified as making significant contributions to our campus through scholarship, leadership, and service, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better and at least fifty percent of all coursework has been completed at OCC.

O cean Kean Ain Shams Business Program

Students from Egypt who earned an associate degree from OCC as part of a triple degree program in Business. The students will begin their senior year at Kean University and earn two Bachelor of Science degrees in Management/Accounting; one from Ain Shams University, and one from Kean University.

Students who are eligible to receive the NJ STARS Scholarship were ranked in the top 15% of their high school class at the end of their junior and/or senior year. To remain eligible, STARS students must: maintain a 3.0 GPA, maintain continuous fulltime enrollment, and graduate within 5 semesters once STARS is activated.

` Performing Arts Academy

Students graduating from the Ocean County Vocational and Technical Schools Performing Arts Academy (PAA) have the option, through Ocean County College’s Early College Program, to earn their high school diploma and associate degree in the Performing Arts simultaneously. The PAA serves high school students throughout Ocean County who concentrate in the performing arts, including audio visual arts, dance, music​and theater.

ACADEMIC DRESS The origins of academic dress date back to the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries when universities in England were taking form. The scholars were also clerics and thus adopted robes similar to those of their monastic orders. Caps were a necessity in the drafty buildings and capes with hoods were needed for warmth.

In the United States, the use of academic dress has been continuous since colonial times. A uniform system was not widespread, however, until about 1895, when the well-defined dress code was adopted by nearly all institutions of higher education.

GOWNS worn by those in the procession vary in design and decoration according to the degree held. Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns.

HOODS, which are the most distinctive feature of the American code, vary in length according to the type of degree held, and are lined with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The velvet border or edging indicates the degree or subject by use of the appropriate color.

THE STANDARD CAP is the mortarboard and is usually the same for all degrees. The standard tassel is black, but the doctor’s cap may have a gold tassel. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is conferred.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE: The design of the gown is the same as the bachelor’s degree. The color of the gown is gray.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE: The academic gown has short or regular sleeves. The length of the hood must be three feet.

MASTER’S DEGREE: The academic gown has pointed sleeves. The length of the hood is three and one-half feet.

DOCTORATE DEGREE: The gown has round full sleeves, faced down the front with black velvet trimming and has three bars of the same material across the sleeves or, in some cases, the color of this velvet relates to the field in which the degree is granted. Length of the hood is four feet.
