A lifelong resident of Ocean City, Joe Wilson is a true Eastern Shore native. He continues to reside there with his wife, Jess, and their two children, Noah and Della. His deep ties to the community are both personal and professional, following in the footsteps of his late parents, Joe and Della Wilson, who were also proud members of the Coastal Association. Their legacy of service and leadership lives on through Joe.

Joe began his real estate career in 2009 as a licensed Salesperson, earned his Associate Broker license in 2013, and in 2018 became the founding partner and Broker of Coastal Life Realty Group. He is also licensed in the state of Delaware.

Over the past 15 years, Joe has been a steadfast and engaged member of CAR and Maryland Realtors, serving in nu-

merous leadership capacities. His past roles include 2020 President of CAR, Chair of the Maryland Realtors Bylaws Committee, and member of the Maryland Realtors Executive Committee, among many others.

Beyond the real estate industry, Joe actively serves the broader community. He sits on the Ocean City Planning and Zoning Commission, is the Vice President of the Ocean City Development Corporation, and supports youth education through his longstanding involvement with Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore, where he played a pivotal role in developing the Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center.

Joe’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Realtors Community Service Award, CAR Realtor of the Year, the David E. Macklin Humanitarian Award, and the Chamber of Commerce Young Professional of the Year

“We couldn’t be prouder to see Joe step into this significant statewide role,” said CAR President Bernie Flax. “His unwavering dedication, proven leadership, and genuine care for our community make him a tremendous asset to the Maryland Real Estate Commission – and to all of us here at Coastal.”

Realtor Foundation gives grant to Big Brothers group

The Coastal Realtors Foundation, a donor-advised fund held by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore (CFES) and administered by the Coastal Association of Realtors (CAR), is proud to announce that Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore (BBBSES) has been awarded a $500 grant as part of the Foundation’s tri-annual grant funding program.

Awarded in March 2025, this

grant will support BBBSES’s mission of providing life-changing mentorship opportunities for children in need across Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“Our mission at the Coastal Realtors Foundation is to empower local real estate professionals to give back to the causes they care about most,” said Bernie Flax, Executive Director of the Coastal Association of Realtors.

Soft arches, warm wood trending for 2025 home decor

Trends that seem ubiquitous one day can seemingly vanish before the sun rises again just 24 hours later. That’s especially true in the digital age, when overnight celebrities and viral videos can be on the tips of everyone’s tongue before being forgotten entirely when the next online sensation emerges in an increasingly rapid news cycle.

Home trends typically benefit from a longer shelf life than viral videos and other fads that originate on the internet, and that’s something renovation-minded homeowners should consider when improving their homes. Homeowners preparing to do just that can consider these notable trends, which the online renovation experts at Houzz suggest will be particularly popular in the year ahead.

Rounded furnishings: Houzz noted that gentle curves and rounded edges embody the organic modern styles that many current homeowners love. Rounded dining tables and similarly circular coffee tables may merit consideration among homeowners who want to embrace popular trends.

Arches: Houzz cites arches among the more popular modern trends, and the experts at Better Homes & Gardens note this unique, eye-catching style has been gaining popularity for several years. Better Homes & Gardens suggests that part of the appeal of arched doorways could be their deviation from a more traditional door shape. That uniqueness draws the attention of residents and visitors alike, and Houzz notes that arched windows, cabinets and even millwork details are part of the pivot toward arches.

Stove alcoves: If it’s a touch of history homeowners want, kitchen range alcoves might be just the project for them. Range alcoves call an earlier time to mind when wood burning stoves were commonplace. The report from Houzz notes range alcoves immediately draw attention, which undoubtedly adds to their appeal.

Wood for warmth: Homeowners who hear “wood and warmth” might think fireplaces, but Houzz reports that wood elements are being incorporated into interior designs as a means to giving homes a cozier vibe. Ceiling beams, trim, wall paneling, and cabinetry are utilizing wood to add warmth to a home. Trends come and go, but home trends typically have more staying power than styles that emerge in other arenas. Homeowners who want to upgrade their home interiors can consider the latest trends and choose those that align with their own personal tastes.

Realtors, SDMS collaborate at Finance Park

Realtors Visit Participated in Junior Achievement’s Finance Park to Empower Students with Financial Literacy

The Coastal Association of Realtors (CAR) proudly participated in Junior Achievement’s (JA) Finance Park on Feb. 26. JA Finance Park is Junior Achievement’s premier program dedicated to personal financial planning and career exploration, helping middle and high school students build a strong foundation for lifelong financial decision-making.

CAR is a proud sponsor of Junior Achievement, and their storefront in JA BizTown plays a crucial role in helping students explore careers in real estate, understand homeownership, talk mort-

gages, and much more.

Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore is located at 301 Tilghman Road in Salisbury and serves Accomack County, Caroline County, Dorchester County, Somerset County, Talbot County, Wicomico County, and Worcester County.

Through an educator-led curriculum and an immersive simulation, Grade 7 students at Stephen Decatur Middle School engaged in real-world financial scenarios where they developed essential skills in budgeting, savings, credit management, and career planning. CAR members volunteered their time and expertise to mentor students, providing insights into financial responsibility and

the role of homeownership in building long-term financial stability.

“We are thrilled to support Junior Achievement in preparing students for their financial futures,” said Lauren Bunting, President of the Coastal Association of Realtors. “By participating in JA Finance Park, Coastal Association volunteers helped young people understand the importance of financial literacy, smart budgeting, and making informed career and housing decisions.”

Students learned about the risks and benefits of saving and investing, understood credit and debit card use, and explored the importance of budgeting and financial planning. Students also recognized the impact of taxes and insurance

on financial decisions. Throughout the program, students identified personal interests, skills, and career preferences.

JA Finance Park is designed for students in Grades 7-9 and aligned with national and state educational standards in mathematics, social studies, and career readiness. The program offers hands-on learning experiences in their on-site facility.

CAR’s participation underscored its commitment to fostering financial literacy and responsible homeownership in the community. By working alongside Junior Achievement, CAR aimed to inspire the next generation to make sound financial choices that would benefit them for years to come.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore exemplifies the power of mentorship, and we are thrilled to contribute to their efforts through our grant program.”

For more than 115 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been a trusted charitable organization, fostering meaningful relationships between children, known as “Littles,” and dedicated adult volunteers, their “Bigs.” These mentorships help young people build confidence, navigate challenges, and achieve their full potential. The Coastal Realtors Foundation is honored to support an organization that makes such a profound impact in the community.

This funding will allow BBBSES to continue offering free mentoring services to children and families in Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties.

The organization relies on community support, grants, and dedicated volunteers to continue making a meaningful difference in young lives.

The Coastal Realtors Foundation provides grants three times a year to organizations committed to community development, education, and mentorship. Funding is accessible solely to members of CAR through an application process administered by the association and reviewed by a committee of CAR members. Through strategic funding, the Foundation aims to foster growth and opportunity for those who need it most.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore is committed to igniting the potential in every child through professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships. By partnering with volunteers, families, and local communities, BBBSES empowers youth to overcome adversity and achieve their goals.

2025 Community Impact Grants Presented

The Coastal Association of Realtors proudly held its Grant Presentation Day on March 7, 2025, awarding a total of $7,500 to 11 deserving nonprofit organizations serving Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset counties. These grants will help support educational programs, housing initiatives, and personal needs on the Lower Eastern Shore.

“Our members live, work, and give back to the communities we serve,” said Coastal President Lauren Bunting. “Grant Presentation Day is a celebration of the incredible nonprofits in our region – and a reminder of what’s possible when we all come together to make a difference.”

The following organizations received grants (CAR nominee, agency):

• Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore (Joe Wilson, Coastal Life Realty Group)

• The Henry Hotel Foundation (Joe Wilson, Coastal Life Realty Group)

• Worcester GOLD (Linda Borror, Keller Williams Realty Delmarva)

• Humane Society of Wicomico County (Sara Bianco, ERA Martin Associates)

• The Atlantic Club (Taryn Walterhoefer, Berkshire Hathaway PenFed Realty)

Each grant will provide vital support for initiatives ranging from youth mentorship and family counseling to historical preservation, housing development, and substance abuse recovery programs.

Funding for these grants comes directly from Coastal’s annual fundraising efforts, made possible by the generosity and support of our Realtor and Affiliate members and the community.

One of the biggest events of the year is the Spring Fling Fundraiser & Auction, which debuts May 13, 2025. This lively evening of art, food, and fun brings the real estate community and

Coastal Association Affiliate Members

supporters together for a great cause. Catering will be provided by Sophia’s Italian Restaurant and Nori Sushi. Drinks will be poured by The Buzzed Word and Topiary & Tea. Tickets now available!

“Realtors are more than real estate professionals – they’re community advocates,” said Coastal Association CEO Bernie Flax. “These grants are a small part of how we give back and help make a lasting difference in our region.”

The next application deadline for Coastal Foundation’s Grant Program is June 15, 2025.
