Ocean City’s watchful eye will become wider By Ally Lanasa Staff Writer (Jan. 15, 2021) The Ocean City Police Commission wants to expand the resort’s City Watch surveillance program, with commission member Mayor Rick Meehan and the commission’s City Council members on Monday expressing support for the plan.
City Engineer Terry McGean said the Boardwalk is fully covered with City Watch surveillance cameras and the next priority for the Ocean City Police Department is to install cameras along Baltimore Avenue. Doing so, however, could run into problems with the bandwidth capacity needed to tie the cameras into the

By Greg Ellison Staff Writer (Jan. 15, 2021) After raising lodging room taxes to 5 percent last January, the Ocean City Council is now mulling another half percent increase next January. The council voted 6-0 on Tuesday, with Councilman Peter Buas abstaining, for a slightly convoluted motion to prepare a spending plan for the increased revenue later this year before pursuing permission to raise the rate from Worcester County Commissioners and the Maryland General Assembly. The resort began collecting room tax in 1998 and had last raised rates to 4.5 percent in 2008 before seeking county approval in March 2019 for the current five percent mark that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. When seeking county approval in March 2019, Mayor Rick Meehan estimated the half percent would generate $700,000 through half of fiscal 2020 if enacted in January of that See RESORT Page 4

nent porches on the oceanfront. The Phillips family announced the closure on social media Tuesday morning. With the closure of founders Brice and Shirley Phillips’ estate, the Phillips family had to make difficult decisions about moving forward with the various estate assets. Shirley Phillips died on Dec. 25, 2017 at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by Brice, her husSee PHILLIPS Page 3
