Prompt Service: Asking AI the Right Questions

A HANDS-ON CHATGPT WORKSHOP

This workshop will be led by Lindsey Johnson, a longtime maker, small business owner, and early adopter of emerging technologies. Since ChatGPT became publicly available, Lindsey has used it extensively across creative, technical, and business projects — from 3D printing and instructional writing to product development, event planning, and running an online store. Lindsey led one of the first AI-focused workshops at Oregon Coast Community College and has taught a variety of community classes over the years. This hands-on, discussion-based workshop explores how to use ChatGPT as a creative partner and problem-solving tool. Topics may include writing and editing instructions, managing small business tasks, generating digital content, and organizing projects. Participants will see real examples and learn how to shape better prompts and guide ChatGPT’s responses. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own questions and ideas. No programming experience required.

An introduction to the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, Featuring Peter Hatch

The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (CTSI) plays a large role in the community life of Lincoln County. Because of the tribe’s complex history, many community members still have important questions about our local indigenous peoples. Peter Hatch, a Siletz Tribal member who serves as History & Archeology Specialist for CTSI Cultural Programs Department, will deliver an all-ages presentation on Siletz tribal history, with an overview of how the hardships and resilience of indigenous peoples shaped the place we now call Oregon. The presentation will run though everything from pre-Reservation village life, international forces at work in the consolidation of Oregon Territory, treaties, wars, removal, shifting federal Indian policy, restoration, and our shared future in this place we all love — all sprinkled with personal family history. The speaker asks that attendees come with their questions for an open and conversational format.

Discover the Coast’s Dark Skies

Curious why “dark skies” matter beyond just seeing stars? In this workshop, Brandon Lucas—founder of Central Oregon Coast Friends of the Night Sky—will guide participants through the growing Dark Skies movement and what it means for Lincoln County. You’ll learn how thoughtful adjustments to exterior lighting help preserve our natural nightscape while benefiting wildlife, human well-being, and local tourism. Light pollution disrupts nocturnal animals, damages ecosystems, and even affects human health and energy use. Brandon will explain what “dark skies” are, why they matter right here on the Central Oregon Coast, and how modest lighting changes can make a meaningful difference for our community. Bring your curiosity and a desire to see Lincoln County shine in a whole new way. Image courtesy Explore Lincoln City.

Irish Steps

This class offers a deeper dive into the traditional solo steps that came before the modern competitive Irish dance style made famous by Riverdance. While not physically demanding in the way competitive dance can be, these steps are intricate and call for focus, coordination, and a bit of stamina. You’ll learn both sean-nós steps—improvised and responsive to the music—and old-style set dances, which are choreographed. The class includes low-impact hopping and rhythmic footwork, so a good sense of balance and steady footing are important. This class is more challenging than the social ceili course, particularly for the brain-to-feet connection it requires. A sense of rhythm and some previous experience in dance or similar movement-based activities will be helpful. Flat, well-fitting shoes like Oxfords are recommended.

INSTRUCTOR: NORA SHERWOOD 11 SESSIONS • MONDAYS, SEPT. 22-DEC. 1 5:30-6:30PM, LINCOLN CITY CULTURAL CTR. $80 • OREGONCOAST.EDU/COMMUNITYED

Irish Ceili Dancing for Adults

If you love music and movement but aren’t exactly a teenager anymore, this class is for you. In Ireland, dancing is a lifelong tradition—from cradle to cane—and there’s a style for everyone. This class introduces the rich world of Irish dance beyond the high-kicking performances of Riverdance. You’ll explore ceili dancing (think social, square-dance-adjacent group dances), with some gentle exposure

to set, sean-nós, and old-style step dancing. Designed for adults who enjoy music and dance but may prefer a gentler pace, this course requires no partner and no prior experience. A sense of rhythm and any background in activities like dance, gymnastics, or skating can be helpful, but not required. You should be steady on your feet and have enough energy to skip around a bit. Comfortable, flat-soled shoes— like Oxfords—are ideal.
