Over 150 years old, the city of Ocala is rich with history. Ocala's name comes from the extinct Timucuan tribe who called their village Ocali, commonly thought to mean "Big Hammock." Today, many of Ocala's streets have historical Native American names, while others have Spanish names from old land grants. In 1827, the U.S. Military outpost of Fort King was established near the present site of Ocala as a buffer between Seminoles and white settlers. In 1846, Ocala became the county seat of newly formed Marion County. By 1858, Ocala was one of the leading social and business centers in Florida. The civil war all but destroyed business in Ocala, and the population dwindled to about 200 people. The center of town was virtually destroyed by fire on Thanksgiving Day in 1883. In rebuilding, brick and other fire-resistant materials were used instead of lumber. Thus, Ocala became known as the “Brick City,” a name still used today. According to the 1885 Charter of Ocala, the town of Ocala was locally incorporated in 1868. At the time of incorporation, the city limits were set 1000 yards in all directions from the Downtown Square. Today, the city has a total area of 47.26 square miles and a population, since July 1, 2021, of 64,096. The City of Ocala boasts beautiful parks, theatres, public and private elementary schools, middle schools and high schools, shops and restaurants, several festivals, concerts, a municipal golf course and airport, and is a central location with easy access to Interstate 75.

Led by Police Chief, Michael Balken, the Ocala Police Department (OPD) is currently staffed by two hundred sworn officers, supported by one hundred and three non-sworn personnel and several volunteers. The Department is organized into the following five bureaus: Community Policing commanded by Major Steve Cuppy, Special Operations commanded by Major Angy Scroble, Investigative Bureau commanded by Major Greg Martin, Support Services directed by Lyn Cole, and Management Information Systems directed by Joshua Sasso. The department employs three full-time Victim Advocates—with one position being grant funded, and maintains its own Communications Center, managed by Mrs. Sherry Walker. In 2021, the Ocala Police Department answered a total of 169, 078 calls for service.

OPD was initially Accredited in 2008 and received the honor of Reaccreditation in 2011, 2014, 2017, and 2020.

The current Accreditation Manager is Ms. LaFayetta Hodges who reports to the Captain of Professional Standards, Jamie Buchbinder.

The Ocala Police Department is in compliance with version 5.18 of the CFA Standards including all applicable Mandatory and Non-mandatory standards. Of the standards listed in version 5.18, thirty-five have been declared non-applicable. .

A Member will pick you up from the hotel on the first 2 days. The last day designated parking spaces will be provided.

HOTEL MAP/PARKING The only way into the hotel is through Valet Parking, which is at the back of the hotel.

Park in the 15 minute parking spaces. The front desk is located on the Second floor.

Take your belongings with you ( because the garage is quite a ways).

The parking garage has designated spaces for hotel guests. We will pay that cost.

MONDAY (Night) Meet & Greet at the hotel when you all arrive TUESDAY After the introductory breakfast, the Captain will drive you to the Police Department & back to the hotel at the close of the day.

The Training Department will be available Tuesday afternoon for Interviews. The training Sgt is also over the Exposure Control Plan and he conducts polygraphs; in addition, Sgt Zadnik will be available to give you a tour and answer questions about the polygraph room.

WEDNESDAY A member will pick you up to take you to the Static Display, to lunch, to the district, back to the department & to your hotel at the close of the day.

Supply, Fiscal & Records will be available for interviews at anytime, everyone else who needs to be interviewed will be at the Static Display.

UDEST (the drug unit) will be available for interviews at 2 PM, when ready the Cpt will transport you to their location.

EXEMPLARY PROGRAMS

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Launched in September 2021, our POLAR PATROL ICE CREAM TRUCK PROGRAM was a new and innovative initiative aimed to help law enforcement build positive relationships in the community, especially with children. When law enforcement visits neighborhoods and hands out free ice cream to kids and families, police can talk, listen, build trust and enjoy ice cream together. OPD believes this program truly helps to break down barriers between police and our youth especially. In its first year, the Polar Patrol has visited over 70 locations and served over 2,500 people—mostly kids! When this idea for a police ice cream truck came up, multiple sponsors wanted to see it come to reality and helped to get it off the ground. The van, design wrap, and ice cream were all donated for this program and the department continues to receive multiple generous donations from members of our community. This program's primary mission is to engage with our most vulnerable young citizens, particularly in our higher crime areas. Every once in a while, the Polar Patrol will visit a D.A.R.E. program at a school, a city-sponsored event, a nonprofit organization, or a childcare facility.

MISSION SECRET SANTA is another community outreach program OPD looks forward to each year. Around Christmas time, OPD works with several anonymous donors in order to secretly pass out cash to unsuspecting citizens during a traffic stop. First, our officers seek out a driving citizen and finds a lawful reason to conduct a traffic stop. Once pulled over, the officer then says the reason for the stop, offers a warning, and then surprises the citizen with a one-hundred-dollar bill. The joyous reactions are then assembled and shared on our social media, allowing a wider audience to experience the positive occasion.

OPD also hosts several other community outreach programs such as: OPD READ PROGRAM, YOUTH ACADEMIES, COFFEE WITH A COP, HOOPS & BADGES, a youth vs. police basketball game, a COMIC BOOK club facilitated by SRO R. Wissinger and much more. OPD sees community outreach as an important part of its mission, and regularly looks for new ways to engage with the community. Ultimately, OPD’s commitment to community outreach makes it a more effective and respected law enforcement agency, and helps to make Ocala a safer place to live.

EXEMPLARY PROGRAMS

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Recently, the department has partnered with Big Brother Big Sisters to bring the BIGS IN BLUE MENTORING PROGRAM to children in Marion County. The program is a national initiative designed to improve communication and understanding between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. Police officers and civilian staff, called Bigs, are matched with local area children, called Littles, for one-to-one relationships that provide friendship, support, and eventually academic improvements. Bigs visit their Littles twice a month and spend time together participating in all sorts of activities. To kick off the partnership, Chief of Police Mike Balken was the first member of the Ocala Police Department to be matched with a Little Brother, named Michael. Since its launch, they've spent time together at a major league baseball game, fishing, watching movies, and much more.

Another program that started recently at the agency was the OCALA PUBLIC SAFETY MENTORING PROGRAM. This 12-week program is designed to help older youth determine if a career in law enforcement is a possible path for them—serving our department as a recruitment tool as well.

Throughout the program, young people have the unique opportunity to interact with public safety professionals and participate in various activities, including building searches, DUI investigations, a firearms simulator, 9-1-1 dispatch, and much more. The program also focuses on character development, life skills training, and positive decision-making. Through these interactions and group activities, officers can share their own experiences and offer advice on how to handle difficult situations.
