change is good
As we head into August, the final month of summer, I hope our readers are enjoying meaningful time with family, friends, loved ones—and even just good company in general.
You’ll notice some exciting changes happening at Ocala Magazine. I’ve made the decision to let go of the entire previous staff and make a fresh start—except Penny Miller, our VP of Corporate Development and my partner at OM. We’re entering a new era with renewed energy and a bold creative direction. Leading that charge is our new head of creative design, Jamie Tardif. Alongside Jamie, we’ve brought in new photographers, fresh writers, and a vibrant team that shares our core values while breathing new life into our work.
I’d like to formally introduce Jamie Tardif as our new creative designer. We’re kicking things off with our annual Arts Issue in collaboration with MCA. This is a special month—our focus is on helping local artists market and sell their work. If you see a piece that catches your eye, please reach out to the artist directly and purchase it. The goal of this issue is simple: support, buy, and source art locally, from creators within our own community.
This month’s Charity Spotlight features, Hands of Mercy Everywhere (H.O.M.E), a faithbased residential program that has been uplifting pregnant teens and teen mothers since 2004. Founded by Diane V. Schofield, H.O.M.E. serves girls in the foster care system by providing housing, education, parenting skills, counseling, life skills training, and support as they transition into adulthood.
To date, more than 2,025 teen girls and young mothers have been served, and 126 babies have been born at the facility in Belleview. With 50 to 75 active volunteers and a supportive online community, H.O.M.E works hand-in-hand with churches, civic groups, and individuals to meet the growing needs of these young women.
If you’re looking for a way to give back, consider supporting Hands of Mercy Everywhere— whether it’s through donations, volunteering, mentoring, or simply helping spread the word. Their mission is deeply rooted in compassion, dignity, and faith—and their impact is felt every single day.

Lastly, it is with the heavy heart that I acknowledge the passing of my lifetime friend and attorney, Dock Blanchard. Dock was not only a devoted father to his two daughters, Chanel Blanchard Culley and Ashley Danielle Bowman. He was a mentor and steady presence in my life.
His wisdom, kindness, and integrity left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him. His loss is deeply personal, and it's one felt throughout the community. He will be profoundly missed.

Alecia’s heart didn’t last long enough to see her granddaughter.
But we made sure Alecia did.
When Alecia was just 25 years old, she was diagnosed with chronic heart failure, a condition she struggled with for years as her symptoms progressively worsened. Alecia’s doctor knew she wouldn’t survive without a heart transplant. But her heart was failing so fast that she might not survive the wait for a new one. Her team of UF Health experts decided on an innovative approach: Implant BiVAD devices to keep blood flowing through her failing heart. Alecia went on to become one of the longest-surviving BiVAD patients in the nation, and thanks to these revolutionary implants, Alecia lived long enough to receive a new heart. And, more importantly, to welcome her new granddaughter into the world.
Human progress has no finish line.
Six More Reasons We’re Ocala’s Most Award-Winning Magazine.
We’re proud to announce Ocala Magazine has earned six Florida Magazine Association finalist awards this year — celebrating our excellence in writing, design, and photography.
The final results will be revealed August 1, but one thing’s certain: our commitment to quality storytelling remains as strong as ever.
Thank you to our incredible team, our loyal readers, and the Ocala community — you inspire every page we create.

Keeping Business in Ocala
BY MAYOR BEN MARCIANO
As a business owner in Ocala, I know how important the role You as the consumer plays in keeping our doors open. Throughout the last couple of years, we have seen many businesses that were locally owned close with residence lamenting how a particular “place was an icon,” or how they miss driving past that business, but the truth of the matter is, if you don’t shop local, you don’t patronize these businesses, you don’t spend money inside of them, their only option is to close.
I totally get the convenience of having items shipped to your door, especially when you’re busy. On the other hand, I know how inconvenient the downtown parking is right now. We have opened up several parking lots at this time in order to provide more parking while construction is taking place on the new garage.
Downtown is a favorite daddy, daughter, date night spot for us. With live music, delicious eateries, beautiful boutiques, and unique gifts, there is something for everyone there.
In about a year from now, the new parking garage will be open providing several hundred parking spaces. Until then, head downtown to eat, play, and shop local. And the bonus is…you’ll get all your steps in.
If you don’t shop local, you don’t patronize these businesses, you don’t spend money inside of them, their only option is to close.

Ben Marciano is the mayor of Ocala.

How MCA Fuels the Arts in Marion County
BY JAYE BAILLIE, DIRECTOR OF MCA

Marion Cultural Alliance (MCA) was established in 2001 alongside the launch of Horse Fever, created to distribute funds raised in support of the arts and local nonprofits. Designated as Marion County’s official local arts agency, MCA’s first project brought public art to Ocala’s streets and sparked a lasting legacy of cultural investment.
Since then, MCA has awarded over $645,000 in grants to local arts groups and, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, has doubled its funding impact. Over $2.5 million total has been raised over the decades to grow and support our community’s creative community.
MCA also hosts the Brick City Center for the Arts, offering monthly exhibits, cultural programming, and a unique store featuring the work of local artists.
Looking to be inspired? Stop by The Brick at 23 SW Broadway Street and explore their current exhibit. Exhibitions change monthly and many works are available for purchase, so you can bring a piece of Ocala’s creativity home with you.

Local Artists
When you walk through downtown Ocala, you’ll find more than just charming shops, historic architecture, and delicious bites. You’ll find a creative heartbeat that pulses through the community. That heartbeat is art. And at the center of it all is the Marion Cultural Alliance (MCA), the powerhouse nonprofit that has been championing local artists, cultural organizations, and creative expression in Marion County since 2001.
MCA is a movement rooted in creativity and collaboration. With a mission to "Champion, Convene, and Create Opportunities for Arts and Culture in Ocala and Marion County," MCA supports the creative community in tangible ways. Through grant programs, partnerships, and advocacy, MCA ensures artists have the resources and visibility they need to thrive.
Their Cultural Grant Program has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to local arts organizations and projects, enriching the cultural landscape and making the arts more accessible to all. MCA also hosts ARToberfest, Horse Fever public art projects, and community programs that bring art into public spaces, classrooms, and everyday life.
Want to get more involved? Become a member of MCA, attend their events, or simply share a visit with a friend. Every bit of support helps keep the arts alive in our community.
As we dedicate this issue of Ocala Magazine to the artists who make our city shine brighter, we tip our hats to the Marion Cultural Alliance. Their work makes sure Ocala doesn’t just appreciate art. We live it.

Hallowed Ground Inflatable Resort on

The Rigby Resort is missing its namesake.
Actually, Rigby hangs out near the resort, eating grass or chasing lizards. He has no interest in the paradise I have created for him. Now and then, he’ll glance up at me as if to say, “You are a pale, 57-year-old man in cargo shorts sitting in an inflatable Walmart pool. I’m good.”
So, yes, the resort I assembled to bond with my son – a floppy golden doodle more Muppet than dog – is an inflatable pool shaded, in part, by a wobbly beach umbrella. There is a chair nearby for books, flip-flops, the occasional adult beverage and, when remembered, a
I created this space upon hearing Rigby “swims” at doggy daycare, where there is a dog pool packed with elated dogs splashing and chasing balls and cannonballing off the side like a rowdy rental birthday party.
I use parentheses around “swim” because, per the daycare staffers, Rigby wades while his posse
Now and then, he’ll sit under an umbrella and watch the action as if he were
In the meantime, my social media

These are the happy ghosts who emerge as I sit in an inflatable kiddie pool with a wet paperback in my hand and a dry doodle in the shade.
feeds overflow with videos of elated dogs swimming. To believe the Internet, all dogs – corgis, doodles, wolves – are Olympic-level swimmers. They retrieve tennis balls, bellyflop and rescue children.
And Rigby?
He eats grass.
Meanwhile, I am belly deep in leaffilled water coaxing and coaxing.
I have been setting up the Rigby Resort every summer for the past four years. Of that, Rigby has been in the pool maybe five times. I picked him up and placed in the pool two of those times.
He’s not afraid. He’s just not athletic. Or active.
So why do I buy an inflatable kiddie pool each summer, feed buckets of batteries into the wheezing air pump, take it down to mow, put it back out, grouse at dead batteries, buy more batteries, realize it is not the batteries, buy a new pump, scrub the rubber bottom, fill it with water, wrestle the frog-laden beach umbrella and then duck the lightning that arrives just as the resort is ready for a dog who is, by now, watching TV
on the couch?
Truth is, the Rigby Resort is more for me than Rigby. Sure, I wish my only son would join me in between thunderstorms, but this is my place for summer reading and reflection.
I am a middle-aged schlub with a ridiculously wide floppy hat, T-shirt and, if I am too lazy to find a bathing suit that still fits, cargo shorts. I love just chilling and surveying our backyard, which is accented by crepe myrtle and bougainvillea blooms. In the spring, we’ll catch the fragrant jasmine climbing the fence.
Owls and hawks sometimes park in our live oak tree, which has been a family anchor for two decades. Our daughters and their friends squealed on the tree swing. On the edge of the tree’s shadow was the playset with a fort, the perfect penthouse for a princess castle.
There were bubbles and corgis chasing the bubbles and girls chasing the corgis chasing the bubbles. There were water balloons, balsa wood airplanes, poorly inflated soccer balls and popsicles.
There was human baseball, in which one daughter would pitch a beach ball and I would swing the other daughter out to kick it with her legs. So much laughter.
That backyard also hosted a rainbow of butterflies and cocoons. Our girls watched dozens of caterpillars break into breathtaking beauty and fly away. Sometimes butterflies fresh from the cocoon would stay on a finger or shoulder until their wings dried. They would fly off hesitantly, as if struggling to leave a bestie after a playdate.
Both girls are grown now. That backyard has not seen a water ballon in a decade, and a floppy Muppet roams the grassy stretches once patrolled by much-loved-but-longgone corgis.
These are the happy ghosts who emerge as I sit in an inflatable kiddie pool with a wet paperback in my hand and a dry doodle in the shade. I look over and watch him grin like a goofball, grass clinging to his muzzle, and I think with complete sincerity and paternal pride:
“Worst. Lifeguard. Ever.”

Ninth Annual Furball for VOCAL

The ninth annual Furball
“TAILS & TEAL” recently held at the World Equestrian Center presented by Lugano raised more than $300,000 to support the programs of Voices of Change Animal League aka (VOCAL). Founded by three women, Linda Norman, Kate Rengel and Lauren Carpenter, VOCAL has evolved from its humble beginnings thanks to a community

that has embraced their vision.
“This year’s Furball was a testament to the community we live in. Seeing over five hundred people coming together to support the animals and the people who love them was exciting. Knowing we have this community of animal lovers behind us is inspiring.” Lauren Carpenter- Event Chair and incoming President.
Guests enjoyed the silent auction featuring over one hundred entries and unique items during the cocktail hour while Shelby Lauren entertained. Dinner was roast chicken and featured a special “teal” dessert. The wine was donated by Ste. Michelle. Louis Stokes was the emcee and DJ.
A video presentation featuring VOCAL’s mascot cat Fuzz preceded the evening’s main event, the live auction by Bernadette Castro. Exciting trips and experiences were auctioned off. The final item was a unique doghouse that is a replica of the 1891 Chambliss House and raised $15,000.

Veterans and First Responders Working Together Hand In Hand
Aspecial event was held recently to give a Key to the City of Ocala Fire Department and the donation of use of the building that is the former Weide Automotive location. The key was presented by the founder and owner, Brien Weidemiller, a USMC Veteran. It is it not often that an opportunity arises in which a business owner has the exact place and size at the perfect timing to meet the need of the City Fire Department.
The upcoming training sessions will be led by Captain Ryan Brady, a Smoke Diver, Paramedic and Special OPS Team Leader. The trainees will learn about many maneuvers and the difference in handling a commercial and residential situation.
Brien commented that “Veterans And 1st Responders are alike in many ways and go hand in hand. It just made sense to me”. His beliefs in giving back and being the
difference made perfect sense to share and be a blessing in helping to meet their needs.
Many accolades to Brien and Weide Automotive and for their heart of giving back on a daily basis to our Veterans, First Responders and to our entire Community.

A Tribute to a Legend
BY LOUISA BARTON
On June 28th, the great iconic horse racing legend D. Wayne Lukas, passed away peacefully at home in Kentucky with his family and other loved ones surrounding him. Wayne was 89 years old.
What does all of this mean to us? Here in ‘the horse capital’ we are proud of all our connections to wins in the great horse races across the USA and beyond. Ocala, Marion County, and the surrounding rural areas provide the best training grounds for young horses, preparing them for their racing careers. With hundreds of thoroughbred racehorse training farms in Ocala and just outside, much of the early conditioning of these horses happens right here. Horses like American Pharoah, Justify, Zenyatta, Flightline, Mystik Dan, American Promise, Thorpedo Anna and so many more I could name got their foundational training right here in Marion County.
Once these horses are prepared, fit and ready, they go onto the track trainer to start their career. To name a few well-known track trainers’ names, I will mention Bob Baffert, D. Wayne Lukas, Brad Cox, Steve Asmussen, Doug O’Neill, Todd Pletcher and there are many more. One of the most well-known and certainly the most iconic name in this list is D. Wayne Lukas. Lukas is the only horse trainer to been inducted into the Hall of Fame for both quarter horse training and thoroughbred training, with an illustrious career in the quarter horses, finishing out with 24 World Champions, and switching to thoroughbred training in 1968. When he passed away, he had 4 Kentucky Derby wins, 7 Preakness Stakes wins, 4 Belmont Stakes wins, 20 Breeders’ Cups wins with a total of 4,953 career wins. Lukas also won 5 Eclipse Awards, and his horses won 25 Eclipse
Awards during his famed career. Lukas saddled winners from coast to coast.
He grew up with Clyde Rice, who was a lifelong great friend to Lukas, even rodeoing with him in their younger years and chasing their training careers and successes together. Clyde Rice owned Indian Prairie Ranch in Anthony for years where he trained and conditioned many champions over his career. Rice passed away in 2017, leaving behind a great legacy with children and grandchildren also involved in the sport, all with very successful careers training horses. His wife of nearly 60 years, Jean Rice, passed away recently on May 27, 2025, at 85 years of age. Jean was the matriarch of a family of top horseman. All four of their children became trainers and/or jockeys.

In the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby this year and in a moment of courage, I cautiously knocked and walked into D. Wayne’s office in his barn. I have to admit feeling a little intimidated, but I had been in his barn many times, and chatted to him, even sitting on one of his pony horses, but never really had the nerve to ask him for the time to do an interview. Something told me just to do it. I will never regret these moments. Lukas was sitting with two racehorse owners, and he patiently smiled up at me from his seat. Lukas had such a presence about him, and I smiled back. I asked for an interview. He responded with, “it’s a good thing you have a pretty smile!” My nervousness subsided and I laughed. It was a short few moments, before his assistant trainer and right-hand man Bas Nicholl came and pulled him away. I could have sat with Lukas all day! During
the short interview, I had a chance to ask about his 2025 Derby contender, American Promise and asked about the Marion County connection, of course, the Rice family. American Promise got his foundational training and was first saddled by Bryan Rice and his team at Woodside Ranch in Fort McCoy. Many of Lukas’ young horses came from early training programs at Woodside Ranch. Lukas could not say enough about how much he appreciated Bryan Rice and his family and team for the work they do, providing racehorses with the best start and the greatest opportunity to have a successful career. He even mentioned the fact that he had many others getting their start at Woodside Ranch also. The Rice/Lukas connection goes way back to the beginning.
Trainer D. Wayne Lukas looks on as Preakness Stakes winner and Belmont Stakes entrant Seize the Grey cools down following a workout ahead of the 2024 Belmont Stakes. (Julia Nikhinson / Associated Press)

It is a very sad time in racing, as a legend has passed away. Lukas has left behind his wife Laurie, his family and longtime assistant trainer Bas Nicholl, who will now take the reins in this legendary operation. Those are big boots to fill, but I believe Lukas’ legacy will live on in Bas and in the many other trainers who are now successful on their own, but who got their start under Lukas’ direction. Lukas, a man whose work ethic was like no other, up at 3:30 a.m. every day right up on his horse and out on the track, up to just a few weeks before he passed. He rode all the way almost to the end. I would have expected nothing less.
This morning, I saw a photo of Greg
Blasi, the Churchill Downs outrider, who also worked and learned under Lukas, with Lukas’ horse on the track, ponying him out in honor of Lukas, riderless and with Lukas’ boots facing backwards in the stirrup irons. I teared up and was reminded that I will never regret taking my courage and walking into his office on that day and having that one last chance to interview Lukas, a day I will never forget, and one that I will always treasure!
Please check out the interview with Lukas on the Horse Talk Show page on Facebook. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to all who loved the legend D. Wayne Lukas. May he rest in peace.

Echoes of the Bell Ocala’s Firefighting History Preserved
WRITTEN BY BRIAN STOOTHOFF AT HOPS/CITY OF OCALA
Beautiful Ocala is no more.... sad indeed do we chronicle the destruction of our town. At the early hour of 5 a.m. Thursday the sound of fire was given, the bell on the Methodist church peeled forth its doleful sounds and it was announced by the crashing walls and the falling of buildings soon after."printed from an Ocala Banner newspaper article on December 1, 1883.
Like most great cities that suffered disastrous fires in the 1800s, Ocala was not spared on Thanksgiving Day in 1883. Newspaper stories say that the fire began on the second floor of the Benjamin & Company mercantile store which was located on the northeast corner of the downtown square when an oil lamp was knocked over. The wind driven flames that eventually destroyed five square blocks was no match for the well meaning volunteer firemen due to an inadequate water supply. Soon after, the citizens of Ocala demanded that a first rate fire department be created. Fire bonds in the amount of $2,500 were sold to purchase needed equipment, and in May 1885 city council passed an ordinance establishing the Fire Department of the City of Ocala. Many of the volunteer firemen were absorbed into the paid fire department; thus Ocala has one of the oldest professional fire departments in Florida.
Retired Assistant Fire Chief Brian Stoothoff has been an avid collector of fire memorabilia for more than. 40 years. He was persistent for years trying to convince city leaders that a fire museum would be a tremendous asset to the City of Ocala. Beginning with one glass display cabinet in the old fire administration building, and a few moves to different locations, the collection kept growing. In 2018 the city announced plans for a first responder complex on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. There would be a fire station, police substation, and a community center with

sufficient space for a dedicated fire museum. The grand opening occurred in November 2020. The museum contains an impressive collection of thousands of items, some dating back to Ocala's origins in the 1800s. There are only a handful of fire museums in Florida and we are delighted to have one in Ocala. The museum hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m.

5 ways to prioritize self-care during the busy summer months
COURTESY OF BRANDPOINT
Summer brings fun in the sun and is often accompanied by packed schedules filled with travel, family gatherings and long days outdoors, making it easy to let wellness habits slip.
However, prioritizing self-care can make a big difference in how you feel and function so you can fully enjoy everything on your sunshine-filled schedule all season long. To help you out, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner offers the following pro tips.
Refresh your space
When life feels chaotic, a cluttered space can make it worse. But you don't have to overhaul everything. Start small! Pick one spot each week to tidy, like your car, work bag or fridge.
As part of the refresh, Blatner suggests adding something small to your daily spaces that sparks joy. It could be color, music or a meaningful item that reminds you to take
care of yourself, even during the busiest days.
Unplug
It can be easy to mindlessly scroll on your phone or other devices. You don't have to give up your electronics, but setting digital boundaries can help reduce your screen time. Schedule time in your day for screen-free outdoor time to reduce stress and soak up mood-boosting vitamin D.
Eat what makes you feel good
Focus on eating foods that taste good and make you feel nourished and happy. Blatner recommends keeping a feel-good fridge zone with pre-chopped veggies, hard-boiled eggs for grab-and-go protein, antioxidant-packed snacks like seasonal berries and infused water jars with herbs and citrus.
Make movement fun
Does the thought of hitting the gym or going on a run fill you with dread? Don't force yourself to do an exercise you don't enjoy. Instead of traditional workouts, embrace
playful movement outdoors like paddleboarding, bike riding, beach volleyball or even dance classes to keep fitness fun and consistent.
Make a sweet, protein-packed snack
Satisfy your sweet tooth with a homemade treat made from high-quality ingredients like Blatner's recipe for Protein Cookie Bites. They're a deliciously craveworthy yet nourishing snack to tackle those sweet cravings throughout your day.
These protein bites are made with Eggland's Best eggs, so you can savor every bite knowing that these eggs contain 10 times more Vitamin E compared to ordinary eggs. This powerful antioxidant helps protect cells from oxidative stress, which is especially helpful during the hotter months when sun exposure increases.
EB eggs also have six times more Vitamin D compared to ordinary eggs, which supports bone health, immune function and mood regulation.
Protein Cookie Bites Recipe
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 8 minutes Yield: 24

Ingredients
· 2 Eggland's Best Eggs, large
· 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
· 4 tablespoons maple syrup
· 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder
· 1/2 cup rolled oats
· 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
· 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Preparation
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk Eggland's Best eggs and stir in peanut butter and maple syrup.
3. Add in protein powder and oats and stir until fully mixed. Then, fold in chocolate chips.
4. Scoop the batter into 24 mounds on a parchment-lined baking sheet and top each with a pinch of salt.
5. Bake about 8 minutes or until bottoms are golden. Let cool for 15 minutes and enjoy.
Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, in the fridge for up to seven days, or freeze for up to three months.
Don't forget to take care of yourself no matter how busy the summer gets!
Ocala Electric Utility Sparks the Future Through Youth Engagement

BY GREGORY DAVIS
Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) continues to demonstrate its commitment to the community by investing in the next generation of energy leaders. In July, OEU hosted two youth-focused educational events that introduced students to the electric utility industry and highlighted the importance of public power in everyday life.
The first event was the Youth Energy Academy, a program created by the Florida Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy. The academy was brought to Ocala and OEU provided students with an immersive experience focused on energy production, distribution and innovation. Students were divided into groups and explored how OEU works behind the scenes to keep the lights on. The program included interactive presentations (such as live demonstrations of breakers and backup systems) and hands-on learning designed to help participants better understand how electricity reaches homes and businesses across the community.
Following the success of the Youth Energy Academy, OEU held a local student day of its own. It offered an inside look at careers within municipal electric service and gave students direct access to departments across the organization.
Throughout the day, participants

toured OEU facilities, observed equipment demonstrations and met with employees from a variety of divisions. The program emphasized safety, system reliability and innovation while showing students how electricity is delivered and maintained across the city.
A key focus of the student events was to introduce young people to the wide range of career paths available in the utility industry. Students saw firsthand how power is restored after storms, how systems are designed to meet growing demand and how public power providers maintain strong relationships with customers and the community.
These outreach efforts reflect OEU’s broader mission to serve Ocala not only through reliable electric service but also through workforce development and
community education. By engaging students early and providing them with exposure to real-world utility operations, OEU is helping to cultivate local talent and prepare future leaders in the energy sector.
The youth events also support the city’s long-term goals of building a strong, skilled workforce and encouraging career opportunities that allow residents to grow and stay within the community.
Ocala Electric Utility remains committed to supporting education, fostering curiosity and creating meaningful learning experiences. Through programs like these, the utility continues to invest in a brighter future for Ocala.

New Radio Tower Honors Marion County’s “Mr. Al”
BY MARK ANDERSON
Recently, Marion County completed the Marion County Radio Tower Expansion Project, a multi-year initiative to construct new emergency communications towers throughout the county, along with improving existing infrastructure.
A $6.9 million program paid for by the Marion County Penny Sales Tax, the tower expansion project built three new radio towers in Newton, Salt Springs and Marion Oaks. With the completed expansion, first responders can expect better radio coverage throughout the county, especially inside buildings — a 95% radio coverage area in Marion.
One of the biggest and most outspoken advocates for the tower expansion project was Alphonso Gordon, more commonly known to Marion County staff as “Mr. Al.” Gordon was a 17-year employee with Marion County Public Safety Communications who rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Radio Systems Manager. In this job, Gordon was instrumental in making the tower expansion project a reality, and he was an outspoken advocate for the project prior to kickoff.
Unfortunately, Gordon passed away suddenly in late 2023 before he was able to see the project come to fruition. His passing affected not only the Public Safety Communications department, but Marion

County staff across the county. Gordon was always a staple at county events — a warm, friendly face who was always willing to chat about anything, but particularly the tower project, which he was incredibly passionate about.
With Gordon’s unwavering dedication to the towers project, Marion County leadership decided to dedicate one of the new radio towers in his honor. The tower in question stands next to Newton Recycling Center on the NW side of U.S. 441 north of Ocala.
A plaque with Gordon’s photo and an inscription will forever be on this tower, honoring Mr. Al’s dedication to bringing this important project to fruition for Marion County’s first responders. For that, we say thank you, Mr. Al!

Left Handers, Back-toSchool, and Friendship!
BY MADISON GLASSMAN
This month is all about August! We will be talking about Left-Handers Day, back to school, Sandcastle Day, and International Friendship Day.
Let’s start with Left-Handers Day. It’s celebrated every year on August 13 and is a day to recognize the uniqueness of being a lefty! This day is super special to me because I am left- handed, too! The day was first found in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell the founder of the Left Handers Club. A fun challenge to do if you’re right handed is to try to do everything with your left hand for the whole day!

Now let’s talk about back to school. Summer is almost over and school is just around the corner. I’m sad summer is ending, but I am excited for back to school shopping! My school starts on August 20th, so I have been looking at all my favorite school supplies. Here are some of my top picks: North Face backpacks, Owala water bottles, and I have my eye on a personalized lunchbox.

Now let’s Jump into Sandcastle Day! Sandcastle Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of August, which this year is August 2nd. Sandcastle Day is a day to celebrate and remember when we used to make sand castles as kids. It’s the perfect excuse to go to the beach and make some sand castles with friends, family or even by yourself.
Now last but not least let’s talk about International

Friendship Day! International Friendship Day is all about celebrating your friends, and it’s on August 3rd. Life is so much better with friends, right? Here are some fun ways to show your friends you care: Write them a sweet note, make them a little gift, spend some time together, or maybe a movie night or even a sleep over! I hope you enjoyed this months of kids corner, see you next month!
