The Science of Supplements

Epic Kids reporter Naya Seth takes a tour of Plexus headquarters to learn about probiotics, vitamins, and gut-friendly supplements.

Did you know that your gut health can have a big impact on your overall well-being?

Plexus Worldwide is a company that creates supplements for all ages to support a healthy gut. I had the pleasure of visiting the Plexus headquarters in Scottsdale, where I met Dr. Michael Hartman, vice president of research and development, and Isabelle Teissier, senior product development specialist, to learn more about how gut health affects the body.

Plexus Worldwide creates a variety of products with one key goal: to support gut health. Everything we eat ultimately makes its way to the gut, and the gut microbiome plays a big role—not just in digestion, but also in brain function, skin health, and energy levels. It is directly linked to the immune system, with some studies showing that certain probiotics can help reduce the risk of infections. One way to support gut health is through probiotics. Probiotics are a type of bacteria— except these are the good kind! The goal of taking Plexus products is to increase the good bacteria in your gut and reduce the amount of harmful bacteria.

But Plexus doesn’t just focus on gut health. They also make products to help people get

essential vitamins. Their multivitamin is actually one of their best-selling products. Different vitamins help the body in different ways—for example, vitamin B supports energy production, vitamin C strengthens the immune system, and vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. In addition to multivitamins and probiotics, Plexus offers tablets, powders, and drink mixes designed to help with stress, exercise, and sleep.

While it’s best to get vitamins from food and sunlight, it’s not always easy to get the right amount every day. Supplements can help fill in the gaps by providing exact doses of essential nutrients. Dr. Hartman emphasizes that supplements should never replace a healthy diet. “Supplements, not substitutes,” he says. How Are Supplements Made?

Developing a new product starts with the marketing team. They analyze what customers are buying and gather feedback from brand ambassadors to find out what people want. If a particular type of product is in high demand, Plexus finds ways to make it unique. For example, their XFactor Kids supplement is a multivitamin with added probiotics to support gut health.

Another thing that sets Plexus apart is their use of all-natural ingredients, even for coloring their products. Instead of artificial dyes, they use ingredients like turmeric for yellow and purple carrots for violet.

To make supplements easy to use, Plexus creates chewable tablets and powders that dissolve in water. They also focus on taste—before launching a product, they invite testers to try it and provide honest feedback. This process helps scientists fine-tune the flavors.

Much of product development involves trial and error. Scientists test different ingredient amounts to create the perfect balance. If one formula doesn’t work, they tweak it by adjusting the ingredients until they get it just right. This process is part of food science, a field that studies how food is made, flavored, and consumed. While most schools don’t teach food science, there are universities dedicated to this field, where students learn about everything from consumer preferences to experimenting with new flavors.

Plexus Worldwide was founded 16 years ago by someone with a background in nutrition and health. Their products can be purchased at plexusworldwide.com.

Naya Seth, 14 years old, loves to read and write. She is a member of the National Charity League and enjoys participating in various philanthropy activities.

Plexus developments a variety of supplements, including some specifically for kids.

Whispering Wind Academy Students Excel at Statewide Mandarin Speech Competition Headliners

Students from Whispering Wind Academy demonstrated their language skills and dedication at the third annual

Arizona State Mandarin Speech Competition, held in February at Arizona State University. Their outstanding performances generated impressive results.

The competition, which featured participants from schools across the state, is designed to celebrate Mandarin language proficiency and cultural appreciation. This year’s results highlight both the commitment of the students and the strength of Whispering Wind Academy’s Mandarin Immersion program. Out of 14 finalists selected in Division B for third- and fourth-grade participants, an impressive seven were from Whispering Wind Academy.

Fourth-grade student Kiara won first place, while Donovan, Samantha, and Kian, also from fourth grade, secured second place. Third-grade students Carter, Garrett, and

Nadia earned third place. Their achievements show the hard work they put into mastering Mandarin and refining their public speaking skills.

PVSchools, which oversees Whispering Wind Academy, expressed pride in these students’ accomplishments and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering language and cultural education throughout the district.

Whispering Wind Academy’s Mandarin Immersion program provides students with the opportunity to develop bilingual proficiency from an early age. With their impressive showing at this year’s competition, these young scholars have set a high bar for future participants, proving that hard work and passion can lead to extraordinary success.

AZ Olympian Jade Carey Honored with Barbie Doll Headliners

Arizona native and Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey was honored in a way many kids dream of—a Barbie doll made just for her!

Carey, a graduate of Mountain Ridge High School in the Deer Valley Unified School District, was celebrated earlier this month alongside her U.S. Olympic teammate Jordan Chiles as part of Barbie’s Role Model series. Their custom dolls highlight the power of female friendship and the incredible impact of women in sports.

“That's just a little kid's dream come true,” Jade said of the honor. “Jordan and I have definitely experienced what can come from our friendship and how much easier a journey can be together. So, I'm just really honored to be a part of this day with Barbie.”

The Role Model series recognizes inspiring women from around the world. While these dolls are not available for purchase, they serve as a reminder that dedication, teamwork, and friendship can help anyone reach their goals— just like Jade and Jordan did on their Olympic journey!

Career Day

FLAVOR EXPLORER

Isabelle Teissier mixes science and creativity to make healthy foods tastier.

Isabelle Teissier

Profession: Product Development Scientist

Age: 32

What do you do for a living?

I create supplements and nutritional products that help people feel better and live healthier lives. What we eat greatly affects how we feel, especially our gut health. I take ingredients that taste bad and experiment with different flavors and sweeteners to make healthier options taste delicious! I truly believe we can make healthy eating more tasty, convenient, and accessible for everyone.

What type of training do you need to do your job?

Food science training can come from universities like UC Davis, Cal Poly, and Chapman. Unlike other degrees, food

science is hands-on, with classes that let you evaluate food through taste, smell, hearing, and texture. For example, my colleague had a class project to glaze chocolate with old coffee grounds, then taste it with classmates afterward!

There are also classes in nutrition and physiology that teach you how food affects your body, especially your gut.

My career path was slightly different. I completed a four-year apprenticeship as a flavorist, learning to create flavors from scratch. This knowledge helped me in other food science areas. While I built my career at a slower pace, it was the right fit for me.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part is seeing the final product after the first production run. After working hard for months to get the flavor, texture, and look just right, it’s amazing to see all the effort turn into something real!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

When I was growing up, I wanted to be a great food scientist like my dad. I was privileged as a child to be involved in his food science laboratory and see his “startup” company grow. At the age of 5, he let me weigh out ingredients and participate in his experiments.

What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career?

If you're creative, think outside the box, and enjoy being hands-on, food science is a great career. Jobs can range from flavoring ice cream to making kids’ multivitamins.

Here are a few possible roles:

• A flavorist creates unique flavors like sour patch candy or cinnamon roll.

• A food scientist uses those flavors and other skills to hide unpleasant tastes and smells from products.

• A product development scientist manages the whole development process from idea to final product.

• A nutritionist or human physiology expert helps people understand what foods are healthy and how they affect our bodies.

One fun fact NOT about your job?

I'm on a dance team that performs at three major events per year. Last year, we did the halftime show at an NBA game, and it was my first time performing live in front of over 10,000 fans!

GATEWAY STUDENTS

Marisol and Sarahi SHINE AS YOUNG LEADERS

Kids Congress program offers students the opportunity to provide input on key topics.

Marisol Saldana

School District

At Gateway School in the Creighton School District, two remarkable students, Sarahi Mariche and Marisol Saldana, are making a significant impact as members of Creighton Kids Congress. This program brings together student representatives from schools across the district to provide input on key topics like remote learning, engagement strategies, and teacher development. Sarahi and Marisol, both dedicated and passionate students, exemplify what it means to be young leaders in their school and community.

Both students believe that leadership starts with setting a strong example. Marisol, a seventh grader, emphasizes the importance of communication, saying, “You need to have good communication with your peers and teachers, so they know you’re a leader on campus.” Sarahi, a sixth grader, agrees and encourages other students to step up by “having good grades, a good attitude, and coming to school prepared.” Their commitment to leadership has earned them recognition as role models on campus, and they take pride in guiding younger students.

Through Kids Congress, both students have had unique opportunities to share their

voices. They recently gave a presentation for teachers and staff about RULER, a strategy that helps students and adults take time to think about the cause and effect of their actions and better understand their emotions. As part of this, they introduced the META Moment, a tool within RULER that guides individuals through steps to make the best decision rather than reacting emotionally. Teachers were so impressed with their presentation that they were met with applause and follow-up questions on how to implement it in the classroom. Marisol has also served on an interview panel for an assistant principal position at Gateway, a responsibility she found both exciting and empowering.

One of their favorite parts of Kids Congress is the teamwork and connections they’ve built with students from different schools. “I love all the people I have met, and I feel like we are treated respectfully and seen as leaders,” Marisol shares. Sarahi adds, “I enjoy the teamwork with students from different schools.” The friendships and collaborations they have formed through this experience make their leadership journey even more meaningful.

Beyond their leadership roles, Sarahi and Marisol are passionate about their future

goals. Sarahi, who plays both the flute and guitar in the Gateway band, dreams of attending Camelback High School before pursuing a music-focused major in college. Meanwhile, Marisol has set her sights on Gateway Early College High School and later Arizona State University, where she plans to study law and become an immigration lawyer. She is motivated by her desire to help people and create a lasting impact in her community.

When they aren’t leading at school, both girls enjoy their personal hobbies. Sarahi loves drawing, spending time on her phone, and hanging out with friends and family. Marisol enjoys practicing makeup, hairstyling, and learning how to do acrylic nails. Despite their different interests, they share a common passion for being role models and taking on responsibilities that shape their school environment.

These two outstanding students are proof that young leaders can create a meaningful impact within their school communities. Through their dedication, creativity, and passion for leadership, Sarahi and Marisol are not only excelling academically but are also shaping the future of their school and beyond.

Have you ever seen sound? This fun experiment lets you watch sound waves in action using a speaker and some candy sprinkles.

Get ready to turn up the volume and watch as the vibrations make the sprinkles dance before your eyes!

WHAT YOU NEED

• A large glass bowl

• A piece of clear plastic wrap

• A large rubber band

• A handful of candy sprinkles (you can also try salt or rice)

• A speaker

MAKE IT SHAKE!

1. Cover the Bowl

Stretch the plastic wrap tightly over the top of the bowl. Make sure it’s as smooth and firm as possible.

2. Secure It

Use a rubber band to hold the plastic wrap in place.

3. Set Up the Experiment

Place the bowl very close to a speaker. The closer it is, the better the effect!

4. Add the Sprinkles

Gently sprinkle a handful of candy sprinkles on top of the plastic wrap.

5. Play Some Music

Turn up the volume and watch the sprinkles jump and bounce to the beat!

EXPERIMENT LIKE A SCIENTIST!

Try using different types of music— does classical music make the sprinkles move differently than a bassheavy song? What happens if you use different materials like salt or rice?

Take notes and compare your results!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

Sound is made of vibrations, and those vibrations travel through the air. When the speaker plays music, it sends out sound waves that make the plastic wrap vibrate. Those vibrations then transfer to the sprinkles, making them bounce and dance!

This is the same principle that lets you feel the bass at a concert or see water ripples when music plays nearby. Sound is all around us—now you can see it, too!
