rand River Transit buses will be a permanent fixture in the township if the majority of Woolwich councillors have their way. In a split decision this week, they voted in favour of keeping route 21 in operation. Their recommendation will be taken into account when Waterloo Region council decides the fate of the route, likely early in the fall. Three councillors backed continuing the route, while two opposed it based on cost, which will be picked up by every taxpayer despite the fact the service is used by relatively few, and only in Elmira and St. Jacobs.

he budget process is just getting underway, but Woolwich residents are already facing a 2.5 per cent property tax hike in 2012, the target figure approved this week by township council. There’s also a provision for an additional one to three per cent increase to fund infrastructure projects. The increases were part of a budget development framework discussed at a committee-of-the-whole meeting Aug. 30. The targets also include maintaining the existing service levels, though council is looking for staff to find cost savings of five per cent across all departments. In proposing to boost taxes by 2.5 per cent, director of finance Richard Petherick noted inflation is expected to run at about that level through 2012. The township is already committed to increase wages, which make up more than half of
