Farm equipment manufacturer will move to Woolwich site ggs. Lumber. And now balers. A vacant industrial site west of Elmira will have a new use as home to TubeLine Manufacturing.

Woolwich council this week cleared the way for the company to move, approving the necessary changes to the township’s zoning bylaw.

Currently located near Wallenstein in Wellesley Township, the company has outgrown the space. The new site allows it room to grow.

Tube-Line, which makes bale-wrappers and loaders for farm use, will bring some 40 jobs with it.

The manufacturing operation is the latest incarnation for the 18-acre site at 6455 Reid Woods Dr. It was previously home to Elmira Wood Products. Prior to that, the site was used for an egggrading operation.

Giving their time, gaining a new worldview

> Tree farm seeks change in zoning Known for their Christmas trees, Benjamin Tree Farm is looking to expand their offerings in Woolwich Township. To that end, the company has applied for a zone change to permit a retail greenhouse operation at 758 Benjamin Rd. The 47-acre property is one of three – along with 837 and 864 Benjamin Rd. – that make up some 115 acres of holdings in St. Jacobs. An amendment to the agricultural zoning on the site is required to allow the sale of products such as bagged soil, fertilizer, mulch and grass seed, greenery items and related pots and containers.

A public planning meeting held at Tuesday night’s meeting of township council was brief, with no delegations speaking to the proposed zone change.

Local nurses volunteer to provide medical care in Guatemala Colin Dewar

group of 25 health care professionals are preparing for a work vacation to Guatemala this November through Community Nursing Services (CNS) and CarePartners to deliver medical clinics to the Quetzaltenango area of the country.

A group of three local nurses and one support staff from the area will be joining 12 nurses, one doctor, a dentist, a pharmacist, a physiotherapist and administration staff on the trip.

Sandra Abell a support worker from CarePartners in St. Jacobs, Crystal Antle a nurse working in Kitchener who lives in Elmira, and Nancy Goodfellow and Anita Korte, nurses who work in Waterloo, are all eager to take the trip to Central America.

“This is a chance of a lifetime; it is something that I always wanted to do. I am very excited and I’ve started to count down the weeks until we go,” said Antle.

The entire team is volunteering their time and efforts for the two-week trip that sees them visit a different village or town every

day. The international medical clinic leaves Nov. 10 and will return Nov. 25.

The nurses pay for their own way and have to cover $2,000 in costs, which can be paid out of their own pocket or can be acquired through fundraisers “We have some people that have held fundraisers and collected donations we also have for staff a payroll deduction plan that can help take the bite out,” said Abell. “But it is a tough time economically for everyone and there seems to be more charities looking for money nowadays than ever before so it can be a bit hard to raise the funds.”

The major problems the nurses see in the Third World countries are children with dehydration and rotting teeth because once they stop nursing, they instantly start drinking pop because it’s readily available to them.

“Even with all their problems I have found that the children in these countries are a lot happier. They have nothing, but they are happy and they are so proud,” said Goodfellow.

“I feel that we could learn a lot from their simple lifestyle,” said Goodfellow. “We have too much. People in Third World countries have a different focus than us, they think about where their next meal is coming from, can they wash their clothes and how can they get some water, whereas we are concerned with what is on TV or the next sale at the mall.”

The group is supported by the International Rotary Clubs, which help set up the villages the nurses visit and help with accommodations.

The group is travelling with 50 hockey bags that cannot weigh more than 50 pounds and must include all the medical supplies and the personal supplies that everyone takes with them.

Space is very limited for personal items as the main focus is to bring medicine and supplies.

CarePartners and the CNS are accepting both financial donations and supplies.

Currently the group is looking for toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, reading glasses, sunglasses, baseball caps, crutches, wheelchairs, soccer balls and stickers that they can give to the kids as they wait.

“When Linda Knight, (the CEO of CarePartners) said nurses are the last generalists she was right because when we get down there we can do everything and anything for these people to help them out medically,” said Goodfellow.

Everyone involved is eager to go on the trip and have begun to correspond with one another about their ideas and thoughts of how the trip will take shape.

“Trips like these are becoming more and more what people want to do, they don’t want to go and sit on a beach or do the bus tour of Paris,” said Abell. “People like the idea of being able to give back to the world community and selfishly it makes you feel good for what you have done.”

> Development fund gets backing Wellesley Township councillors agreed unanimously this week to back a resolution from the Southwest Economic Alliance (SWEA) in support of a southwestern Ontario development fund.

SWEA is calling on the province to create such a fund, recently adopted by the Ontario Liberal party as an election platform. The organization hopes all other political parties adopt the motion as well, with the new provincial government that emerges after Oct. 6 implementing it during the first provincial budget.

The plan for southwestern Ontario is to commit $20 million annually for five years beginning in 2012. This is similar to the commitment from townships in eastern Ontario who currently have their own economic development plan in place.

Pendergast outlined her actions over the past four years that have sought to resolve the issue of gravel extraction in West Montrose and surrounding communities, such as when she brought then-minister of Natural Resources Donna Cansfield to tour the region back in January 2008, and when current minister Linda Jefferey visited the area in July 2010.

“We let her know of our concerns for the environment and our voice was once again heard at Queens Park,” said Pendergast.

The Liberal announcement was met with optimism by the group Socially and Environmentally Responsible Aggregate (SERA), a not-for-profit organization with the aim of developing third-party audited standards for environmentally and socially responsible sourced construction materials.

“We’re pleased that the Ontario Liberal party intends to build upon the work of voluntary standards initiatives like SERA,” said Michael Fenn, interim-chair of SERA in a release Tuesday.

He said the Liberals stand on the issue was one reason why he permitted a red Liberal sign to be put on his front lawn.

“I’m not usually a sign guy, and I would say in the past 24 to 48 hours I’ve made up my mind,” he said after the announcement.

“The NDP and Greens have said they’re in favour of a review but the Conservative Party hasn’t taken a position at all and we’ve been saying before we vote we want to know where you stand but they’ve been saying ‘vote for us then we’ll tell you where we stand’ and that’s been a frustration.”

In a press release distributed by PC candidate Michael Harris’ campaign, the PC party challenged the Liberals plan by accusing Pendergast of “playing politics with pits” and by misleading voters after four years of inaction.

In that same release the party promised to

listen to the concerns of the community, be an advocate for local interests, and to work with Woolwich council to see any environmental assessment process brought through.

Robert Rose of the Green Party and Mark Cairns of the NDP both agreed in principle with the review, but said the Liberals have spent too much time talking and not taken enough action on the problem.

“We welcome Leeanna’s attention to the issue, but we have serious doubts about the McGuinty government’s willingness to act,” said Cairns.

In an interview after her announcement, however, Pendergast reiterated her dedication to the issue by saying the time for talk was through and the time for action was now at hand.

“We’re at that precipice where we need to deal with where aggregate goes in the province. We can’t wait, prime farmland is being destroyed, and once it’s destroyed it’s gone.”

Farm-based fertilizer company cleared for expansion

Woolwich council approves zone change, but township will monitor for potential problems Steve Kannon

A

n on-farm fertilizer business looking to expand in Woolwich’s north end got the green light this week from township council.

The decision reclassifies the Wellington Fertilizer operation as “farm-related use” from the current “onfarm business” designation. The zone change approved Tuesday night allows farm owner Robert Brubacher to build a new warehouse on his 56-acre farm property at 7021 Sideroad 5 W. He plans to add a 1,367-square-metre

warehouse to a site that’s now home to a 330-sq.-m. building and a 71-sq.-m. office. The company brings in raw ingredients such as potassium sulphate, potash, copper sulphate and gypsum, mixing them to create various fertilizers that are then sold to farm customers.

In recommending the plan, however, director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley said his staff has taken into consideration concerns raised by neighbours since a public meeting last October.

The township requires a site plan that deals with issues of dust,

noise, garbage and truck traffic, with the proposed new layout dealing with many of the current problems.

Plans to move the loading and bagging areas away from the front of the property and into an enclosed area will deal with noise and odour complaints, for instance, he suggested.

Likewise, Brubacher noted the new building will be set up to allow trucks to drive through, with room on the site to permit trucks to turn prior to exiting, eliminating the sound of back-up beepers and keeping trucks from having to

For neighbour Darren MacMillan, whose house is just 90 metres from the existing operation, growth at Wellington Fertilizer runs the risk of making current problems worse. He pressed councillors for assurances there would be no negative impacts on his property.

He rattled off a list of concerns – noise, hours of operation, potential health impacts of fertilizer dust, possible contamination of his well – related to watching the property across the road move away from farming and towards a “fertilizer industry.”

“I just want to make sure my family’s personal health and my investment in my property are both taken care of – that’s my main concern.”

His comments drew a sympathetic response from Coun. Mark Bauman, who said the neighbours have a right not to be impacted by particu-

Coun. Allan Poffenroth, however, remained skeptical, pushing for assurances neighbours would not suffer adverse effects.

“I don’t want to see noise problems develop,” he said, pointing to longstanding complaints about some industrial operations in Elmira. “I’m concerned

about a potential future problem.”

Under the bylaw allowing the use, outdoor equipment using backup beepers, for instance, will be limited to between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the week, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Sam Head, a planning consultant for TubeLine, said the hours of operation would fall between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with no heavy presses or other noisy equipment involved in the process. Renovations to the existing structures would include soundproofing. As well, where the wood-processing business saw 15 trucks a day accessing the site, the new use would require only four or five.

oday (Saturday), scrapbookers from across the region will pack up their supplies and convene at the Elmira Curling Club to help raise funds for dancers at Encore Dance Studio in Elmira and to collect much-needed food for the local food bank.

Organizers hope to see some 50 scrapbook enthusiasts out in for their second annual event.

“Last year was our first time, and this year we’re way more efficient at it,” laughed Christa Uttley, who has spent the past year organizing the event with cocoordinator Ann Jobes.

Their first fundraiser saw some 30 people out and raised about $200 to help offset some of the costs of the dance studio. The group also collected about 200 pounds of food and they hope to improve on those numbers their second time around.

“It’s something that Ann and I do for our own hobby and it just made sense,” said Uttley, who has been scrapbooking since 1996.

They even have a donation from an Australian company called Dusty Attic.

“Ann sent out over 1,000 emails worldwide to England, Australia

and locally, and we can then provide supplies as prizes or as part of the raffle table or games that we play while we’re there,” said Uttley.

She said the idea came to them last year when they wanted to find a unique way to raise funds to offset the dance costs at the studio, which Uttley’s daughter Adriane and Ann’s daughter Sarah both attend.

The director and owner of the studio agreed with the idea and felt it was a creative way to raise fundsy.

his year’s annual Elmira District Community Living quilt auction will be a little more memorable for all those involved as it will feature a quilt made in honour of longtime community member Sheila Herteis.

Herteis, who was raised in St. Clements and lived with Downs Syndrome, died of a stroke in January at the age of 39. She was a lifelong contributor to EDCL, local businesses and the community.

The memorial quilt patches were made by friends and family of Herteis as a commemoration of her passion for life and all the work she did. The 48 patches were sewn together during a quilting bee Tuesday at the home of Verna Bauman just outside of Elmira.

“It was quite a surprise,” said Sheila’s mother, Arlene, an avid quilter who sewed her patch for the quilt back on Mothers Day. “It was a nice surprise to do this for Sheila, and I think it’s quite neat.”

IN HER MEMORY On Tuesday, 10 members of the Mennonite community met for a quilting bee to piece together the 48-patch quilt in memory of EDCL contributor Sheila Herteis.

s l o w her down. She was enrolled in the special needs program at Smithson Public School in Kitchener after Grade 1, where she learned sign language as well as how to swim.

She went on to graduate from Bluevale Collegiate Institute, and spent the rest of her life helping others in the community. Sheila was a volunteer for 22 years at St. Clements Roman Catholic School and in the local daycare and nursing home.

She also worked at

EDCL in the kitchen and in the office, as well as took on one shift a week at the St. Clements grocery store and at Frey’s Flowers in Elmira.

Her active life is reflected in her quilt, which includes family photos, sentimental messages from friends and family, and a patch commemorating her participation in the Special Olympics as a bowler.

“Sheila touched a lot of people’s lives,” said Greg Bechard, executive director of EDCL. “She had many, many friends and so I think there’s that sense of

honouring Sheila’s memory.”

The near-completed quilt is now being stored at the EDCL office in Elmira and will be auctioned at the group’s annual quilt auction on Oct. 28.

Bechard said he appreciated how the group Sheila cared so much about could tie together her memory with their largest fundraising event of the year.

“When I saw [the quilt], it brought back a lot of memories.

She was an important person here,” said Bechard.

“We all still miss her.”

embers of the public heading into the St. Jacobs library will be greeted by a new smiling face as Susan Letkeman has been hired as the new assistant supervisor of the branch.

She started the new position last week, replacing Patrick Gibbons who retired this past August after spending five years at the library.

“She’s fabulous. She just wants to get out into the community and reach people and bring them into the library,” said Sheryl Tilley, supervisor of the Woolwich Township branches of the Region of Waterloo Library.

“She’s doing a lot to build on the work of her predecessor at the Three Bridges School, which is predominantly a Mennonite school, and she will be liaising with the principal there,” added Tilley.

Letkeman brings a world of experience to the position in St. Jacobs. She was born and raised to missionary parents in Columbia, South America and attended American and Canadian schools there before leaving to complete her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education at the University of Michigan at the age of 17.

She came to Canada 19 years ago and moved to Woolwich Township two years later. She was a kindergarten teacher in the 1990s as well as worked with special needs children before joining the library profession.

She began her work at the Region of Waterloo Library in March of 2009 at the Elmira,

Bloomingdale and St. Jacobs branches, and looks forward to continuing that work in her new position.

“I love it here,” she said of working at the St. Jacobs library. “I had worked at this branch occasionally whenever I filled in for Patrick. I love the community and I’m excited to be here.”

She said her first goal is to get to know the community and the people living in it and what their needs are from the library. She hopes to promote all the good things people can experience at their local library beyond simply the books they see on the shelves.

“A lot of people see this cute little building, but there is so much more we can do for them that they don’t know,” she said, citing the thousands of DVDs she has access too in the library’s database, ranging from TV shows to documentaries.

“They’re not all sitting in the branch, but I can get them from across Ontario and even Canada.’

She also wants to promote other services at the library such as ebooks, homework help for students, audio books and even research databases compiled by top experts in their fields that can be trusted.

She is also launching a pre-school storytime in October and is taking registration for spots now.

“I love people and working with adults and children,” she said.

“If you come in and are looking for something, I like digging around until I can find the answer or the resource you’re looking for. It’s a job, but it’s also fun.”

Cancelled debates a sign of short election cycle With just a month, candidates can’t always fit meetings into their schedules James Jackson

I

n a short provincial election where wouldbe MPPs have just over a month to tackle issues ranging from the economy to the environment, time is precious.

The Social Planning Council of KitchenerWaterloo discovered that the hard way last week when they were forced to cancel both of their scheduled all-candidates debates in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding, citing low candidate response.

“We were chasing them down until the last minute to try and figure out if they were going to make it or

not,” explained Elisha MacWhirter, the organization’s program coordinator.

“We got a lot of ‘we will have to check, we’ll get back to you’ and then they never got back to us.”

The meetings were set for Sept. 14 at the Breslau Community Centre and Sept. 18 at the Doon Pioneer Community Centre in Kitchener, with the goal of making poverty an election issue and to hear the various candidates’ positions.

The agency works in collaboration with local non-profit groups as well as performs research in partnership with non-profits and

government groups to address poverty and other social justice issues throughout the region.

MacWhirter said she had been sending emails and calling the various parties since August to try and confirm the date.

“We want to make poverty an issue in this election. We want people to be speaking about it and we want all the candidates to make it part of their platform,” she said.

Two other scheduled meetings by the Social Planning Council for the ridings of Kitchener-Waterloo and Kitchener Centre on Sept. 15 and 16 went ahead as planned, with five can-

didates and 80 people attending the meeting in Kitchener-Waterloo and four candidates and 60 people attending the meeting in Kitchener-Centre, MacWhirter said.

MacWhirter doesn’t think the fact other candidates could make time for the debate means those in Kitchener-Conestoga – Liberal incumbent Leeanna Pendergast, PC Michael Harris, NDP Mark Cairns or Robert Rose of the Green Party – care any less about the issue, but did admit that the fact they tried to organize two debates may have hampered their efforts to attend.

Two debates were planned based on the size of the riding to try and make it easier for the public to attend at least one.

“I guess it ended up being more of a problem for the candidates than we had anticipated,” MacWhirter said.

She said that some of the candidates said they might be able to attend one but not the other, and that getting all of them together proved difficult.

Each of the candidates expressed their regrets that the meetings were not held, and said that poverty was certainly on their radar in this election.

Robert Rose of the Green Party said he was unable to attend either meeting because he was visiting his mother in northern Ontario after the decision was made to stop her cancer treatments.

He said he tried to find a replacement in time, but that other members of the Green Party were equally swamped with debate requests.

“It’s too bad,” he said.

“These are issues we need to discuss for sure, and we the Liberal government have worked really hard in that area,” said Pend-

ergast on Tuesday. In 2008, the Ontario government made a commitment to lift 25 per cent of Ontario children and their families — some 1.6 million Ontarians in 2009 — out of poverty within five years.

“We’ve been working with them since last week to set up a time when Michael can meet with them to get more information on what they’re doing,” said Ken Audziss, a member of the Harris campaign, of their attempts to schedule a meeting with the council.

“There is so much [to debate]. We could have filled up two nights of questions and answers on the issue,” added Cairns in an interview Wednesday.

“There is no other debate where that [poverty] is a front and centre issue, and it’s very unfortunate that we didn’t get to debate those issues.”

Tories pandering with tough-on-crime rhetoric

R

ight up there with Stockwell Day’s perpetrators of unreported crime destined to fill new prisons, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says statistics aren’t relevant as the Conservative government this week rolled out its tough-on-crime omnibus bill.

As Parliament resumed, the government set crime legislation as its top priority, part of a plan to spend billions of dollars even as the crime rate continues its 20-year downward trend. The spending may be out of step with need and public finances, but that won’t be a deterrent.

“We’re not governing on the basis of the latest statistics; we’re governing on the basis of what’s right to better protect victims and lawabiding Canadians,” Nicholson said this week.

Bill C-10 consolidates nine pieces of legislation the Tories were unable to pass in the last session, covering

a range of issues from mandatory minimum sentences, new takes on young offenders, a crackdown on drugs and changes to the parole system.

Critics have condemned the plan, saying the steps fly in the face of what’s really happening. Having made a big deal of the fear-based policy, however, the Conservatives are eager to press ahead solely to show follow-through on the pledge.

Statistics, need and fiscal constraints don’t figure into the picture.

Planning to spend $10-$13 billion on prisons is excessive. Doing after running up a record deficit is folly.

Harper, however, seems intent on pandering to his base, spouting tough-on-crime rhetoric. He also does the public a disservice by promoting fear merely to justify spending massive amounts of money.

Harper’s prison plans to the U.S. model, saying he’s taking another page out of the Republican playbook. The parallels exist, the prison issue being just the latest.

Looking at the situation to the south, that’s certainly a model we don’t want to follow. The U.S. has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world – about 750 of every 100,000 people in the country, about seven times greater than in Canada – yet it’s unclear what, if any effect that’s had on the crime rate.

Certainly, no one is going to argue the U.S. is safer than Canada.

Much of the increase in U.S. incarceration rates has come in that last three or four decades – between 1970 and 2000, the general population grew by 40 per cent, the prison population by 500 per cent – aided lately by Republican governments and the push for private, for-profit

At the same time, cuts have been made to crime prevention and victims’ aid programs. As well, policies have exacerbated the link between poverty and crime rates.

We’ve seen similar changes here under the Conservative government, including a 70 per cent cut to crime prevention funding.

Even the talking points are the same. The Tories are already briefing members to apply the “soft on crime” label to anyone critical of the billions in spending the government can’t justify.

When it comes to crime, the U.S. has problems we want no part of here, including the proliferation of guns, a legacy of racial issues and a for-profit factor in its criminal justice system.

The Tories, however, show signs of wanting to take that road.

Geo-engineering ready to take off in fight against global warming

S

cientists who are working on various concepts for “geo-engineering” the climate are almost comically eager to stress that they are not trying to come up with a substitute for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the main cause of man-made global warming. They are just researching back-up systems that we might need if the reductions don’t happen fast enough.

“It’s hard to imagine a situation except a dire emergency where this will be used, but in order to have that conversation sensibly we need to provide some evidence-based research,” Dr Matt Watson of Bristol University told the British Science Festival in Bradford last week. He is planning to test the feasibility of an “artificial volcano” that injects sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, so where better to try it than in the pancake-flat county of Norfolk?

Interestingly, he has the implicit blessing of the British armed forces, which take the threat of climate change very seriously. His experiment will be carried out at Sculthorpe airfield, a bomber base during the Second World War and still an active Royal Air Force facility. The goal is to find out whether non-rigid balloons (blimps) could be used to spray sulphur dioxide particles into the air and cool the planet’s surface.

Why an “artificial volcano?” Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen, who first suggested this method of cooling the planet five years ago, pointed out that big volcanic explosions inject millions

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER of tonnes of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, where they remain on average for a couple of years. During that time, they reflect enough incoming sunlight to lower the temperature at the surface appreciably.

The Mount Pinatubo explosion in the Philippines in 1991 put enough sulphur dioxide in the upper atmosphere to lower the average global temperature by half a degree Celsius (almost one degree Fahrenheit) for two years. No mass extinction or global famine ensued, so we can tentatively assume that human beings could also put sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere without causing instant global disaster.

We cannot assume that there would be no negative side-effects, however, which is why some scientists have been urging that we carry out smallscale experiments to learn more about the process. They also want to investigate how we could put such a large volume of sulphate particles into the stratosphere, for the task might turn out to be too expensive or just impossible.

That is the goal of a three-year project called Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering (Spice), which is being supported by the universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Ed-

inburgh and Oxford. The first phase of the project involves testing a blimp that will lift a reinforced hosepipe to an altitude of one kilometre and spray water into the air.

It’s purely about delivery methods: will a balloon tethered to the ground be stable enough to support such a length of hose, or will it become uncontrollable in the wind? If it passes that test, then the long process begins of scaling up to a blimp big enough to support a 20-km (12-mile) hose, for that is the height at which the sulphate particles must be dispersed in order to stay up for a long time.

A blimp big enough to do that would be the size of a football stadium, and the Spice researchers estimate that it would take about 20 of them, moored over the ocean, to cool the planet by 2 degrees C. It would cost, they think, as little as $7 billion or as much as $75 billion dollars, but even the latter sum would look affordable to a government in a panic – the kind of panic that would occur if the planet got 2 degrees C (3.5 degrees F) hotter.

This is the first time that a geoengineering idea has moved out of the lab and into the real world, and it is bound to attract some very hostile attention. You still hear the argument that we should not even discuss geo-engineering techniques, for the knowledge that they might exist will lessen the pressure to cut carbon dioxide emissions quickly. But the cat is out of the bag, and the best we can do is to figure out whether they are really

Raising the spectre of class warfare not a bad option I

n opposing President Barack Obama’s plan to raise taxes on the wealthy to help dig the U.S. out of its self-made financial hole, opponents such as Republican House Speaker John Boehner invoked the issue of class warfare. They call it a populist move, making the wealthy and corporations the target of failing middleclass and growing underclass.

Opponents also vow to quash the $1.5-trillion plan in Congress. But Democratic supporters, who’ve been particularly critical of Obama’s lack of progress and what they see as continued compromises, are cheering his tougher stance.

What the U.S. – and indeed much of the West, including Canada – needs is more class warfare. Oh, not in the sense of the riots we’ve seen in Greece, Britain and France, for instance, but in the sense outlined by noted American historian Howard Zinn, who argued his country’s two major parties are simply different sides of the same coin, neither interested in the welfare of average citizens.

“Whether Democrats or Republicans are in power –and we have a lot of historical experience that tells us this – corporate power will dominate the country, the military-industrial establishment will be in power, the war against the poor will continue, and we will need a movement, a great national movement, to oppose that.”

That’s precisely what’s missing from political debate, here as assuredly as in the U.S. Today, the framework is based on austerity

But that’s really just a distraction from the bigger issue, namely the framework of our civil society. That has more to do with regulatory matters than it does with particular spending choices.

In short, it’s about who benefits from the political and economic systems we’ve created – and let’s be clear: they are manmade, not preordained. For much of the postwar era, it was a large segment of the population. For more than 30 years, however, the number of beneficiaries has grown smaller, increasingly in favour of the wealthy and corporate classes. Everybody continues to pay, but fewer and fewer profit.

Conservative governments, funded by those who’ve seen the most benefits, have certainly led the charge against the types of advances that came out of the Depression/Second World War experience, including regulations governing minimum wages, working conditions, the environment, corporate ownership and financial services, to name a few. But they’ve been joined by their major opponents here (Liberals), in the U.S. (Democrats) and the UK (Labour) as money influ-

ences the debate.

Decision after decision that has been harmful to the middle class has been couched in just the opposite terms – supporters knowing full well you can’t sell policies by saying a handful will make out like bandits at everyone else’s expense. From financial deregulation (the cause of the meltdown from which we’re still “recovering”) to free trade, from outsourcing to corporate welfare, we’re told the changes will make us all better off. Or, if that doesn’t work, we’re told the sky will fall if we don’t go along with the prescribed course of action. For the latter, look no farther than the billions of dollars funnelled into corporate hands in the form of bailouts following the 2008 collapse, often paid to those responsible for the crisis in the first place. Large sums of that cash were paid out in bonuses, with banks and investment companies quickly returning to profitability while taxpayers are on the hook for the money, all the while suffering from unemployment and underemployment.

The central myth revolves around the free market, which typically boils down to privatizing profits and socializing losses, witnessed time and time again.

“Be wary when you hear about the glories of the market system. The market system is what we’ve had.

Let the market decide, they say. The government mustn’t give people free health care; let the market decide,” Zinn wrote in an article in May 2009, less than a year before he died

More effort needed to stem abuse of horses To the Editor,  As a long time resident of this community, I feel warranted voicing my opinion on this subject. Since I was raised on a farm and had horses “off the track,” I know the challenges one faces when introducing them to “normal life.” I am thankful that my father taught me to respect animals and be wise when caring for them. Thus one more letter addressing the cruelty occurring in our area.

It was deemed the “hottest” day of the summer and warnings were issued for humans and animals alike to rest and take caution. Coming home from Guelph, I witnessed a pitiful scene involving a horse and buggy that continues to haunt me. The horse was not walking but being spurred to trot at a fast pace along the roadside. Of course he was lathered, and I wondered if he would drop over dead, which, by the way, I have seen before. Right then and there, I made a decision to pursue every avenue possible in order to be heard – whatever it takes to stop this abuse.

Just as cars are identifiable by a license number, buggies should be

identifiable as well. There has to be a way to report these despicable actions to the police in order that the parties are held responsible to their community and cases are followed by the SPCA just as in any other case of animal cruelty.

I will not rest until I do everything in my power to see this through. I am sick and tired, not to mention ashamed, of the cruelty towards these horses in our Mennonite culture. (As a former teacher of the David Martin Mennonites, I tried to instill a respect and appreciation for all animals on their farms, in hope that a change of practice would evolve.)

I have talked with the SPCA, and our MPP and will continue to do follow up. I encourage all who share my concern to do so as well.

I am not condemning all our Mennonite friends; however, I’m afraid that a bishop giving a quick reference to “cruelty to their horses” on a communion Sunday is not cutting it.

We should do more to protect horses To the Editor,  I read with great interest the comment submitted by a tourist

from Illinois in the Sept. 10 edition of the Observer. I so agree with this lady’s comments: I have seen so much horse abuse by the Mennonite community.

The horses seem barely able to walk at times, never the sight of water or feed anywhere. When the Mennonites stand at some side road trying to sell their maple syrup, the poor horses are tied up and left in the sun all day, and tied where they cannot bend down to eat at the grass.

I have reported these worries that I have to the Humane Society. Winters they freeze and summers they are exhausted from the heat. I have always felt, death is more humane for any Mennonite-owned horse. I feel that the local Humane Societies should be doing surprise visits to Mennonite farms. They are not above the animal cruelty laws. My heart breaks every time I see them having to pull so many people in those buggies.

Also, where is the Humane Society when these horses are tied up all day at the St. Jacobs market? I have made comments to them and, of course, never get an answer. It is very hard to not see this abuse, yet it continues every day.

Trickle-down economics, of course, is what we’ve been living with for more than three decades.

It’s founded on the belief that what’s good for the wealthiest classes is good for everyone. Bank profits are at an all-time high, financial services are raking in billions and corporations have rebounded nicely. Unemployment remains high in much of the West, personal debt levels soar and the standard of living falls.

But it’s the latter group that gets to pay for the austerity measures we’re told we need in order to pay for the profits of the former.

As the recent riots have shown, we either deal with the class struggle in the manner of FDR through Lester Pearson, or we deal with it on the streets.

Nobody is claiming that geo-engineering measures are a substitute for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. But for all the talk about cutting emissions, they are still increasing, and it is highly unlikely that we will turn that trend around in time to avoid passing through 2 degrees C hotter – after which the risk of uncontrollable, runaway warming gets very big.

The scientists who are investigating geo-engineering are not reckless.

They are actually the cautious ones, who want to have some fall-back plan available in case all the promises of future emissions cuts do not come true, just like all the past promises of emissions cuts failed to come true. We will get our emissions down eventually, no doubt, but it would be nice not to have a climate catastrophe in the meantime.

Can geo-engineering avert catastrophe? Nobody really knows, and that’s the point. “It may turn out that this whole strategy is a bad strategy,” as Dr Hugh Hunt of Cambridge University, who is leading the field test at Sculthorpe, told The Independent newspaper. “That’s what we’re trying to find out.”

New studio brings yoga to Wellesley

he word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated.

Garry and Dawn Malo, owners of the Pfeifer Gallery at 3706 Nafziger Road in Wellesley, are looking to bring a little union to the people of the area as they open a yoga studio above their gallery.

With instructors Kate Stevely and Chantel Franklin, the studio will be offering dif different styles and levels of the exercise.

Stevely, who began teaching classes in September at the studio, has been an instructor for more than 35 years and offers hatha yoga, a more flexible yoga style that is easier for basic or first-time yoga enthusiasts.

Traditional hatha yoga is a holistic yogic path, including disciplines, physical postures, purification procedures, poses, breathing, and meditation.

“The hatha yoga predominantly practiced in the West consists of mostly physical postures understood as physical exercises. It is also recognized as a stress-reducing practice,” said Stevely. “It is challenging enough for a fairly usual cross section of people but not too challenging.”

Stevely has seen a large range of ages attending her night sessions from teenagers to 70 year olds, with a few men taking on the flexible poses.

“In North America yoga

is decidedly skewed towards women but if you go back to India where it all started women were not allowed to practice yoga. Yoga was for the householder and not for women, who were at one time just considered to be like a piece of furniture,” said Stevely.

Franklin will be offering both an introductory yoga class that has a slow pace and modified poses and will also offer a vinyasa flow class for more experienced students.

The word vinyasa means “breath-synchronized move-

ment” and the yoga teacher will instruct students to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. The style is smooth and poses run together and become like a dance.

“It’s for more experienced students who know the flow and poses. My stuff has a bit more gymnastic feel, but I have not had any anyone break their hips just yet,” she quipped.

Franklin will begin teaching regular classes in October.

Reaction to the studio has been quite posi positive according to the instructors who said their stu students leave feel feeling relaxed.

“I have students tell me they are lovlov ing the session and a lot of locals in town are happy to know that there is something close, nearby that they can go to and don’t have to drive into Stratford or Kitchener or Water Waterloo.”

Classes with Franklin will be running Thursday nights starting at 7:30 p.m. and Satur Saturday morning at 10 a.m., both classes with run for 75 min-

utes.

Stevely runs her classes back-to-back on Wednesday nights starting at 6 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. for the hour and half.

drugs.

Taxes add to the challenge of offering quality, affordable wine I

’ve had the pleasure over the past two weeks of co-hosting 260 delegates from 30-plus countries for the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists congress. The group had dozens of experiences, including wine sampling at the provinces main wine-producing regions – Niagara, Lake Erie and Prince Edward County.

These journalists typically write about the production and, sometimes, the politics of the wine industry. Few are actual wine writers. But that doesn’t stop them, or anyone, from having opinions about the quality of Ontario wines. If you like it, you buy it. If you don’t, you don’t.

For the past 20 years, Ontario’s wine industry has worked hard to leave its mediocre past behind and respond to increasingly selective consumers. This effort has been propelled mainly by the industry’s determination to develop its Vinters’ Quality Alliance (VQA) appellation, and make sure wines bearing the VQA logo were produced with high standards, including 100 per cent Ontario vinefera grapes.

Like many Ontarians, I welcome this effort. I’m proud of Ontario agriculture and food, including its wine.

If the VQA designation drives quality, I’m all for it.

So I was surprised when during a Lake Erie visit, Dennis Sanson of Sanson Estate Winery, a small producer near Leamington, came out

Food For Thought Owen Roberts swinging against VQA. He says the designation is limiting small wineries such as his, who don’t necessarily sell through the LCBO and want to branch out and offer different varieties. He finds VQA confining.

I have mixed feelings about this.

Increasingly, choice is what it’s all about. But so is quality. Travel through the Finger Lakes wine-making region of New York State sometime, and see what happens without a quality appellation. Good wines get lost among the plonk.

To be honest, plonk is everywhere, including Europe. No country can hold its nose when sniffing another’s bouquet. That’s simply elitist. However, you don’t want a reputation for producing average wine, either.

That was my biggest concern as the journalists moved through their wine-region tours. I'd told them repeatedly Ontario has superb, medalwinning wines. Would VQA carry the day with them?

For the most part it did. But some international visitors considered our wine average, and didn’t mind saying so. Terms such as acidic and young

were tossed about freely.

Part of the reason is that a $16 bottle of VQA Ontario wine – the kind many people reserve for more special occasions (and the kind that turns into a $30-ish bottle when served by hotel staff at a conference) – is likened to a $6-$8 bottle in some other countries. Taxes account for a major portion of that difference. The LCBO has a voracious appetite for alcohol taxes, and as a result, a lot of the wine that stands out for its excellence is beyond the reach of many people, journalists included.

This is unlikely to change. Ontario needs tax dollars. The alternative is to continue to emphasize quality and make reasonably priced Ontario wine increasingly better, particularly with the LCBO’s zeal to continue offering

a wide range of imports that directly compete against our own producers.

It’s nice to have a broad international selection – no wine region, including Ontario, can produce every variety of grape (we’re very good at five varieties that are particularly suited to a cold climate such as ours: chardonnay, reisling, gamay, pinot noir and cabernet franc). And a broad selection helps us realize where our own products fit in, quality and price-wise. As well, the LCBO is finally giving Ontario wines more prominence and shelf space.

But it’s nowhere near the profile Ontario wines should have. If they’re going to keep improving, they need more support from consumers – and from the world’s biggest buyer of alcohol, the LCBO.

> CONTINUED FROM PG. 14 he does it on his own and now he no longer takes a single drug for his back pain after being reliant on them for six years,” said Stevely. “I also have another student who had a knee brace for 20 years and now she no longer uses it.”

People with joint issues can build up their muscles in a good and flexible way around the joints. A lot of conventional exercise can build muscles too tight and too short and yoga tends to build muscles long, loose and secure.

“I personally started yoga when I was 15 because it was either that or live with a back brace for the rest of my life. I had to basically teach myself so I went to the library in Stratford, which had one book on the subject back then, and learned all the moves,” said Stevely.

Franklin said when a person practices yoga they are connecting their mind and body together.

“You being to think about things like what am I eating and what kind of chemicals are in my shampoo, soaps and cosmetics, stuff we truly do not need, “ she said. “ It starts with the downward dog and leads to you looking at the world completely different.”

Yoga gives a person a wider range of motion, said Franklin, adding for her it is a balance not just physically but also mentally and it helps with every-

thing and brings a new out look to life.

“When people think about yoga they think about laying on the mat doing poses but that is only one part of what yoga really is, it changes the way you live your life, the way you approach things. It gives you strength both in body, mind and heart. It has changed my world.”

For the Malos, opening a yoga studio fit into their current lifestyle as both have recently become vegetarians and are very active and into the fitness trend.

“Yoga just fit into our lifestyle,” said Garry. “We had the space and knew that we wanted to do something with it and decided a yoga studio would work best.”

From a business standpoint, Wellesley is a pretty low traffic village so putting in another retail shop did not make sense for the Malos.

“We have been operating our framing studio for years and have made a name for ourselves. We just wanted the space above the gallery to be used as a studio, and yoga made perfect sense.”

The Malos are hoping to include more yoga classes and perhaps some martial arts of kids and belly dancing class to their studio.

“If this yoga studio catches on we can always expand if we need to as we have another studio space next to this one,” said Garry.

ix months ago, Alina Kehl didn’t speak a word of the Turkish language, but now she is a reigning Canadian champion and won a bronze medal at the Turkish Olympiad held in June.

The 11-year-old Floradale resident only started taking lessons back in March after her parents, Chris and Leon, hired a PhD student from the University of Waterloo to teach her the language.

Every year the local Turkish community in Kitchener holds a friendship dinner in November and they invite the community to join them, and Alina’s parents were among those who went last year.

“Afterwards, we were told about this Turkish Olympiad and were asked if our girls would be interested in it at all and learning some Turkish,” said her father, Leon.

Alina, along with her older sister Danielle, started taking lessons once a week and after learning the basic

phrases such as hello (“merhaba”) and goodbye, Alina decided to study music and her sister focused on poetry.

Eventually, the pair was asked if they wanted to compete in the Canadian Turkish Olympiad, a linguistics competition held in Toronto in May; although Danielle felt she was not prepared enough for it, Alina agreed to enter.

The competition was broken down into three categories, the foreign language song category and foreign language poetry categories for contestants did not speak Turkish as their native language and the mother-

language poem category in which contestants were native Turkish speakers.

Alina performed a traditional Turkish lullaby in the foreign language song category in front of the judges and about 500 audience members, and despite some early nerves was chosen as the winner.

Alina had performed in the school and church choir, but never a solo alone on stage.

She said another contestant, Zehra Nur Sasal from Ottawa, helped calm her nerves and actually went on to win her category as well for best mother-language poem.

pray for me that I would do well and would get through it,” said Alina.

A taste of Canadiana for the cooler weather W

e often speak about “just what is Canadian cuisine?” Well, nothing suits the bill better than Waterloo County pig tails. Perhaps you have never had this delicacy before, or it has been so long since you have enjoyed them and the recipes have been lost throughout the generations. This is a must-try if you consider yourself to be a local foodie.

There are so many delicious cuts of a pig but we think that each bite of the tail contain the “porky goodness,” especially when cooked with a sweet and sticky sauce – think the best part of ribs, but we feel that this dish is best enjoyed when the weather gets a little cooler, as they can be cooked slowly in the oven for hours.

Our method for cooking these tails is to first steam them with a can of your favourite beer. By doing so, you will cook out some of the excess fat. Once you add the sauce continue to cook uncovered to reduce and caramelize the tails

Meanwhile, in a small sauce pot combine ginger ale, soy sauce, ketchup, mustard, maple syrup and garlic. Reduce by two-thirds on medium-high heat; Pour reduced sauce over pig tails and bake until sticky gooey goodness, about 30 minutes.

er contestants who were between the ages of 12 and 16 and who had been attending Turkish-language schools much longer than Alina.

“We found out afterwards that she was supposed to be 12 years old to compete, but Turkish rules are more like suggestions,” laughed Leon.

With her win in Toronto, Alina represented Canada along with the other two winners at the ninth annual Turkish Olympiad from June 15 to 30, quite a big step for a girl who had never even been on a plane before.

Her mother and one of her sisters accompanied her on the way over, and the rest of her family joined them a few days later.

“It was nerve-wracking, but exciting too,” smiled Alina of the whole experience.

The Olympiad included about 1,000 kids chosen from 15,000 competitors in 130 countries around the world. The theme of the Olympiad, organized by the International Turkish Education Association, was “One language, five billion people,” to signify the world uniting under one common language, according to the event’s website.

With approximately 200 million Turkish speakers, it is the fifth largest language spoken around the world.

Alina performed the same lullaby for the judges in Turkey in the same category and was recorded and broadcast on television across the country. Despite the fact she only started learning the language three months earlier, she came home with the bronze medal and $600. She credits her success to her love of music.

“You get to talk about your feelings and can really connect with the person who is singing and the people you’re singing to,” she said.

“I just love music and singing.”

She said she spent hours listening to the words and then ran them through her head and repeated them over and over, and she also made use of YouTube and other Internet sites to learn the proper pronunciations of the language.

After the competition the family spent the remaining two weeks in Turkey touring the countryside, playing games with the kids from other countries, and getting their photos taken with fans.

“It felt like we were movie stars,” laughed Alina.

Now that she’s returned home and left the rock-star status behind her, Alina isn’t sure if she will continue with her Turkish classes. She is ineligible to compete in future Olympiads given her bronze medal performance her first time around, and she may decide to focus her energy on new hobbies – or even her Grade 6 French homework.

“This was kind of a special, oneof-a-kind thing,” she said.

Hunter and dog set to ring in the grouse season P

eople often say, “That rings a bell.” But, the sound of a bell – that reverberating, metallic clang – is slowly going the way of the dinosaur, replaced by buzzers, beepers, ringtones and other electronic sounds.

But there was a time, not that very long ago, when bell sounds were a common part of everyday life. Church bells chimed from far and wide early each Sunday morning. Fire trucks clanged bells whenever they sped by in response to a call. Countless kids had untold fun ringing doorbells and running away.

Yes, bells were used to pronounce the beginning and end of the school day or recess. They announced everything from fire alarms to the commencement of dinner. They brought meetings to order. They were an integral part of your phone. Teachers used them to gather kids in the school yard. And don’t even get me going about town

There’s more. Every service counter had a bell to ensure prompt service. Hotel’s actually had bell boys to respond to the incessant tinkling.( I guess they still do.) And gas station bells announced that you were at the pump.

If you were melodically challenged, as I was, you got to play the bell in music class. Which was fine because there wasn’t a rock band worth its spandex that didn’t utilize cow bells in at least one epic power ballad.

Is it any wonder we hated bells?

So why then do I actually look forward to placing one on my dog’s collar on the opening day of grouse

season? What gives with that?

The quick answer is that it helps me keep track of where she is in the woods. It also offers an extra level of safety for her on a hunt – and that’s important.

Sure there are electronic beeper collars that will do all this. But there’s something about them that leave me cold inside. The thing is if you listen to that bell long enough, you can almost imagine what the dog is doing.

When the clanging is quick and urgent, Callie’s on the scent of a bird. When it’s slow and rhythmic, she’s quartering through the thickets. And when it stops, you probably don’t want to be downwind. You lose all that with an electronic beeper.

Bells are just more evocative. No one has ever asked “for whom the beeper tolls” for instance.

I often wonder what the grouse think about all this. I mean, there they are in the middle of their

thicket when suddenly they hear distant tinkling. And then they hear the sound of a bell too.

“You think the ice cream truck has finally made its way into our neck of the woods?” one might ask.

“Beats me,” the other answers.

“All I know is that no predator ever announces itself with a bell. So we might as well relax.”

That’s when Callie rushes in and flushes them skyward.

What happens next is always a matter of chance. Sometimes I hit; sometimes I miss. That’s what makes grouse hunting so exciting, I guess. And maybe it reveals a little about why I love that sound too.

Grouse are good eating, so it’s probably just a Pavlovian response.

In any case, my blaze orange vest and upland boots are at the front door, ready for the opener – which I wouldn’t miss for anything. As for Callie, she’ll be there with bells on too.

eading into last Sunday afternoon’s home game against the Brantford Golden Eagles, Elmira Sugar Kings head coach, Dean DeSilva, could not have been more pleased with his team’s record so far this season.

Boasting a 4-0 record and facing the third-place Golden Eagles the Kings managed to pull out a 3-2 win, keeping them in first place in their division. The victory came despite a slow start that saw the visitors dominate the Elmira defence.

Bolstering the confidence of the Kings was the fact that they killed off three consecutive minor penalties that resulted in the Golden Eagles having brief periods of 5-on3 play. Despite the extra man advantage, Brantford still couldn’t beat netminder Nick Horrigan, who stopped 12 shots on net in the first.

“Nick Horrigan as a goaltender has to be the best penalty killer, and he was outstanding tonight. He came up big and has the experience.

Having a solid goaltender like that in net helps the young defence develop: we know they are going to make mistakes, but he is there to save them,” said DeSilva.

The coach also credited his penalty killers for doing a “tremendous job.” They had quite a workout, as the Kings took eight penalties during

“We have got some young guys in the back end and a lot of experience up front, but the guys who are a young group back there did a great job.”

With neither team scoring in the opening frame, the

Kings didn’t really find their game gear until well into the second period. During a Golden Eagles penalty, the Kings came down on a rush that saw Riley Sonnenburg feed a beautiful pass to Craig Johnson, who followed through on

a one-timer that beat Eagles goaltender Bryce O’Hagan to score the period’s only goal at 8:17.

Returning to the ice for the third, the Brantford came out hard and fast, taking the game to Elmira. Golden Eagles defenceman Brandon Montour finally beating Horrigan, finding the back of the net at 8:48 to tie the game.

The Kings rallied to score three minutes later to regain the lead on a 2-on-3 rush that saw Lukas Baleshta set up Will Cook as he beat O’Hagan with a one-timer at 11:33.

Brantford came back with just over four minutes left to play, however, when forward Mitch Brown made a quick pass to Nick Szabo who fed Nate Mitton, who then managed to slip it between Horrigan and the post to tie the game at 15:46. Locked at 2-2, the game would go into overtime.

One of the Kings’ best scoring chances came early in OT on a play from Andrew Smith.

In his own end, Smith made a good effort to clear the puck from his zone. The puck was bobbled by the Brantford defence and Smith was able to get the puck back for a good break in on O’Hagan. Smith fired the puck high and the goalie got just enough of it to deflect it up and past the post.

pass to Clayton Greer who fed it to Smith, with O’Hagan appearing to be caught off guard by the quick play.

Horrigan made 38 saves for the Sugar Kings, while O’Hagan finished with 30.

The Golden Eagles failed to convert on eight power-play opportunities, whereas the Kings cashed one of their chances.

With the team’s fifth win in a row, DeSilva said there was still a lot of room for improvements especially when it comes to handling the puck through the neutral zone.

“It’s guys trying to be too fancy. Some guys are not used to playing at this level and this intensity and are just not strong enough on the stick, something that we can talk to them about it but until they experience it that is what it’s going to take. Now, hopefully we will see them get a little bit better and better as the season progresses.”

Team captain Colton WolfeSabo said it is up to the older players like him step up and guide newer players.

“Our systems are really good and we have great coaches and as long as everyone buys into the system then we are going to be able to out play anyone,” he said. “There are a lot of young guys on the team right now, but us older guys just have to teach them how to do it. Everyone on the team is a very quick learner and they pick up on it very quickly, that is why we are doing so well.”

he EDSS junior boy’s volleyball team hit the courts this week for their first home game of the season and walked away with a win against the Sir John A. MacDonald Highlanders.

Last year the boy’s team won three games, an improvement over the season before when they did not manage to post a single victory.

This year head coach Sarah Gerth is optimistic that the team will perform even better and was given three solid games from her players defeating the Highlanders 25-15, 25-18 and 25-19.

“The team is looking good, we are really excited,” said Gerth.

“These are just good hardworking kids.”

The team boasts 10 returning players which will help guide the new players as they make their way through the regular season.

“There are always the powerhouses – those schools that do well year after year – but I think we will stand our ground against them this year.”

Due to a low turnout this year, however, the senior boy’s volleyball

performs for me,” said Gerth.

Communication and talent seemed to be helping the Lancers as they played against the somewhat disorganized Highlanders during Tuesday’s game.

“The personalities on this team gel really well and everyone gets along, they are all respectful of the process.

I am just looking for to having more wins this season.”

Wellesley nixes idea of Sunday gun hunting Colin Dewar

T

here will be no Sunday gun hunting in Wellesley Township.

Councillors turned down the idea in a split vote Tuesday night, putting to rest an issue that’s been on the table for a few months. The 4-1 result came despite a last-minute push by proponents, with only Coun. Paul Hergott supporting the bid, saying the majority of people he spoke to were in favour of the issue.

Even a deferral request from the Nith River Wild Turkey Conservation Association (NRWTCA) failed to gain any traction.

“We were a little naïve thinking that Sunday gun hunting would be easily adopted into the Wellesley Township,” said NRWTCA president Derek Snyder. “We thought that since Wellesley Township now allows Sunday shopping and liquor sales to occur it would be an easy decision for council.”

The organization had submitted a letter to council from the Waterloo Federation of Agriculture asking council for a one-year trial period that would empower landowners to do as they see fit with their own property.

“We thought that would be enough to persuade council in favour of Sunday gun hunting,” said Snyder.

Snyder told council the NRWTCA just found out about a petition against Sunday gun hunting on Sept.

15. That petition had the signatures of 52 people from 29 different addresses opposed to the issue.

“We originally did not send out a petition because we felt we did not have to but as of Sept.

16 we held our own petition in favour of the issue and have received 41 addresses on it, with more to come,” he said.

Snyder asked council not to make a decision on Tuesday night for or against Sunday gun

hunting without examining his petition, adding he hoped to gather more information before the next meeting to present to council.

“We would like there to be an open council meeting where members of the community can come and debate the issue,” Snyder told council. “We feel that the petition that was handed out against Sunday gun hunting had some incorrect information on it.”

The petition opposed to the change stated that wildlife numbers are down in the region and that that farmers have a problem with trespassers on their land.

Snyder said those two statement were not true.

“We feel the petition was misleading. People that I represent want Sunday gun hunting in Wellesley. We would gladly listen to the people who are against the issue at a meeting and they can listen to our side of the matter.”

Coun. Herb Neher told the delegation the idea of holding a meeting had some merit but unfortunately the majority of people in the community against the issue are Mennonites and they do not usually attend public meetings.

“Sometimes that is not the barometer to use to see if the community is in favour of an issue,” said Neher. “The only people that we are going to draw are the people that are in favour and the odd farmer against the idea.”

Township chief administration officer Susan Duke told councillors the township had received four phone

calls over the summer in support of the issue.

Coun. Jim Olender said he had been contacted by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and they were not in favour of having gun hunting on Sundays.

“An executive from the OFA will be sending a letter to the township explaining their stand on the issue. The biggest concern for the OFA is the amount of trespassing that will occur,” said Olender, adding he believes it to be hunters from Toronto or Kitchener that do not follow the rules not the local hunters in Wellesley.

“I have had all negative feedback about this issue. My constituents do not want Sunday gun hunting.”

Snyder said the issue would not go away and the NRWTCA would continue to have hunters in the area looking to hunt on Sunday and “we will continue to try to gather support of our side of the issue.”

“The Mennonite community told me they do not want to hear guns or shooting on a Sunday,” said Neher. “We are still a community that believes that Sunday is a day for rest. Perhaps we can look into this issue down the road but at this point I can not support the issue to implement Sunday gun hunting.”

Mayor Ross Kelterborn tabled an extension to hold the vote on the issue until next week but only Hergott supported the idea. The remaining councillors decided they had enough information to make an informed decision.

Whether we know it or not, we have a history Waterloo Region Museum lecture series starts with the fact that, yes, there is a past worth noting en McLaughlin knows far more than most of us about the history of Waterloo Region. True, he’s a history professor at the University of Waterloo, but the rest of us are just not plugged into our past.

That’s partly because we don’t have any landmarks here, he suggests: we weren’t part of the fur trade route that defined the early part of Canada’s history; there are no forts or remnants of major battles; and no monuments of note.

Having been a student at Dalhousie University, he knew that Haligonians were well aware that Halifax has a history and its place in major events such as the World Wars and the great explosion of 1917. Yet he knew very little of the community’s history when he arrived in this area as a history professor in 1970.

“We don’t emphasize our history,” he said, adding “this region has an amnesia about its past.”

Kicking off a new lecture series at the Waterloo Region Museum, he hopes to begin changing that. In fact, he hopes the new museum will be a catalyst for residents to gain an appreciation for our history.

museum, which has collected some 43,000 artifacts related to our past. Entitled “Without the things of our past, how can we know it's us?” this talk will try to place the museum and its exhibits in the historical framework created by the Region of Waterloo and its people.

The role of the museum, he said, is to gather artifacts and to develop a sense of our history, bringing together north and south, rural and urban.

It’s a balancing act, drawing together the similarities between Cambridge – only relatively recently created by the amalgamation of Galt, Hespeler and Preston – and Kitchener, Waterloo and the four townships.

Through exhibits that draw on coming-of-age stories across four or five generations, for instance, we discover that we have much in common.

Teenagers today face many of the same issues from generations past, he said. Similarly, the use of lifelines – personal stories to tell of the interconnectedness between residents over many generations – also serves to make history real.

“What we see about our history is that all the people of the region can find themselves in the story,” said McLaughlin.

That’s perhaps especially true of artifacts that represent living history, such as the first Corolla that came off the Toyota assembly line in Cambridge in 1973 and the early

“People can hear about this stuff … then they’ll understand why we did what we did,” he said of the museum.

Perhaps most importantly, he said, residents will gain a better sense of their history, success measured by the number of comments to the tune of ‘I didn’t know that about the region.’

NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT THE STUDY The Township of Woolwich, through their consultant AECOM, is undertaking an Environmental Assessment for the Floradale Road structure #050106, to assess potential rehabilitation or replacement options for the bridge. The project will be carried out under Schedule “B” in accordance with the requirements of the Class Environmental Assessment for Municipal Projects. That “glow of good health” after a day outdoors is the rosy look painted by powerful ultraviolet (UV) energy, says astronomer Bob Berman in “The Sun’s Heartbeat.”

About 1% of the light hitting a sunbather is UV, which translates into a million trillion photons per second, all alas capable of hiking the risk of skin cancer. Even sitting in the shade won’t block all UV because of light-scattering effects, so it comes at you sideways.

A hazy humid day, however, will increase time needed to tan (or burn), screening away half the incoming UV. A cotton shirt, no matter how ugly, blocks 90% of the harmful rays. And window glass (single-pane) does the same, transmitting just 12% of UV; make that even less for a standard double-pane.

Lorna Jarvis (nee Erwin) is lovingly remembered by her children Steve and his wife Kathryn, and Lindsay Joseph and her husband Scott Shantz; grandchildren Stephanie and Ian Jarvis, Nyla Joseph, Celia, Helaina and Madeline Shantz; brothers John Erwin (Shirley) and Hugh Erwin (Patti); and sisters Patricia Wright and Lynne Cummings (Randy). She is also fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews.

Lorna was predeceased by two sisters Jean Gillis and Joan Steinbach. Cremation has taken place. At Lorna’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Regional Cancer Centre of Grand River Hospital or Hospice Wellington.
