A foul smell of rotting eggs that wafted over parts of Elmira early this week was just that: eggs. Several residents reported the odour Monday and Tuesday, contacting the Ministry of the Environment, which traced the problem back to Lashbrook Egg Products on Bonnie Crescent. The odour occurred when a treatment method failed on some new equipment designed to process eggshells. The company, a division of Gray Ridge Egg Farms, is in the egg-breaking business, providing egg blends and products such as egg whites and yolk extracts. Informed of the issue, the company immediately shut down the process, said Gary Tomlinson, supervisor at the MOE’s Guelph district office. The new quipment had only been in operation for a week or so. In looking into the odour, however, officials noticed the company did not have a certificate of approval for the new process, which involved the installation of a dehydrator to convert eggshells into a feed additive rather than sending the waste to landfill. Neither the company nor the Danish manufacturer of the equipment was aware of the requirements, and the line has been idled until the company goes through the official paperwork, said Tomlinson. The odour complaints caught Lashbrook off guard – as an egg company, it’s never had any MOE issues, unlike some of the neighbours in that eastside industrial area. “It’s not an issue any longer, said Scott Brookshaw, the firm’s vice-president of operations. The company is now looking at improvements going forward.
