COUNCIL HAS MORE TO WORRY ABOUT THAN MARSHALL

Councillors walk out of meeting as Marshall rants Unable to control situation, they simply walk out of the room; return later to brief shouting match STEVE KANNON Add walking out of a meeting to a list of Woolwich council firsts that includes an audit review of two members, and the removal of the mayor and another councillor. There’s even a common thread to Tuesday night’s antics, as the huffy exit was sparked by Elmira resident Alan Marshall. Allotted a delegation spot to speak about election expenses – members of the public can register to address council for up to 10 minutes – Marshall went on a meandering discussion involving Mayor Sandy Shantz, the Chemtura plant, contaminants in the Canagagigue Creek and the Ontario Ombudsman, among others. When Coun. Larry Shantz, chairing the committee of the whole meeting, attempted to get Marshall on track, the Elmira resident refused to stop.
Councillors then got up and left the room. “We’re going to recess,” he said when Marshall refused to relinquish the floor. Staff members, looking around bewilderedly, eventually got up and exited the council chambers as Marshall turned around and continued speaking to people in the audience. Eventually, councillors returned and attempted to take back control of the meeting. “I will not be silenced by council,” Marshall interjected, refusing direction from the chairman. “You, sir, are a shame.” After a bit more shouting, joined by a couple of other audience members supporting “democracy” and the right of the public to speak, Marshall and some others stormed out of the room. Tractor pulls, roasted corn, and good times will abound at the 21st annual Waterloo County Steam Threshers Reunion on Aug. 21-22 at Amsey Metzger’s Wallenstein farm. [WHITNEY NEILSON / THE OBSERVER]
Steam will power popular event set for next weekend in Wallenstein WHITNEY NEILSON Amsey Metzger’s busy preparing for the 21st annual Waterloo County Steam Threshers reunion on his Wallenstein farm. As president of the organization, Metzger has played host for the past seven years, welcoming 800 to 1,000 people to his property for a corn roast, tractor pull, live auction, and much more. “It’s all about getting
donations from local businesses, and the infamous corn roast on Friday night. “Friday night is our biggest night. We’ve had crowds of 800 to 1,000 because of the corn roast which is steamed by the steamer, with the steam from the steam engine. And people just love it,” Metzger said. Thursday morning will open with a tractor run at 8:30 a.m. Anyone with a tractor is eligible to par-
people together to let them know how things were years ago, what they used, how they worked and get people together to see that,” Metzger said. “Also to raise funds for giving back to the community where people are in need, to hospitals, or if there was a fire in the neighborhood.” He adds it’s a good way to get the community together for a weekend of fun activities. They’ll have a gospel sing, a live auction with

If there’s enough interest, they’re going to do a bush tour to their neighbor’s farm on Friday and Saturday. They need a minimum
