Founded by the leadership of the United Mineworkers Association, Centerville Clinics was originally opened to help miners and their families have access to health care.
In 1955, the clinic opened in a Centerville farmhouse, led by a board of directors of at least 51% patients. It has since grown to become the fifth largest health center in Pennsylvania with 13 offices and nearly 40,000 patients.
“What makes a community health center special is we see everyone regardless of their ability to pay,” said Barry Niccolai, chief executive officer of Centerville Clinics.
Centerville Clinics is not a free clinic, but patients can apply for a sliding scale payment plan. Based on family size and income, some patients pay nothing, while others pay $10. It varies for each individual, but a federal grant makes up the difference in the cost of services.
One of the benefits of providing affordable health care is the opportunity to educate patients on preventative health care
“Our goal is to keep you out of the emergency room or admitted to the hospital. We’re able to save the entire health care economy by having patients who receive regular health care instead of waiting for symptoms,” Niccolai said. “We pride ourselves in treating the whole per-
son and that includes everything. We offer primary care, dental care and behavioral health care.”
They also offer lab and radiology services; specialists in podiatry, dermatology, gastroenterology and more. In a world with “shrinking pharmacy options,” according to Niccolai, Centerville Clinics has its own pharmacy in the clinic, ultimately providing patients a one-stop-shop for all of their health care needs.
In addition, for those patients who are homebound or just returning home from the hospital and in recovery, Centerville will even send a nurse practitioner for a home visit.
Centerville Clinics continues to grow and expand too.
They’re completing the renovation of a new building in Donora and will celebrate the grand opening in the spring of 2026.
“We’ve just opened a new facility in Washington County, and we’ve purchased a new building in Fayette County that will have a drive-through pharmacy in that office as well,” Niccolai said. “After renovations, we expect to move in in the latter half of 2026.”
Centerville Clinics was voted first place for Health Clinic and overall business in Mon Valley, Fayette and Greene Counties.
Niccolai hopes it’s a reflection of the quality of care they provide.
“Back in the 1950’s, families took care of each other and their neighbors. That’s the culture we’ve continued, established by our founding fathers. We encourage all of our providers and our staff to treat patients as though they were family members and how they would want to be treated,” Niccolai said.

Centerville Clinics has 13 offices across Southwestern Pennsylvania and is the fifth largest health center in the state.

At Laurel Highlands Insurance, personalized service is important, said agency president Joe Rettura.
“I don’t want to be a big box store or agency. We want people to realize they can call and talk to a human being and get personal attention from a licensed and trained insurance professional,” he said.
That’s how he’s done things since he purchased a Uniontown insurance agency in 1995. The formula has worked, as he and his son, JJ, expanded the business to locations in Belle Vernon. Across the three areas, Laurel Highlands Insurance serves more than 11,000 policies in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Rettura knows it’s not uncommon for homeowners, car owners and others to feel overwhelmed or confused by the specifics of the insurance industry, so he’s made it a goal to put clients at ease.
“We’re proponents of educating our
policy holders to understand we are doing what’s best for them and exactly how their policy works,” Rettura said.
In addition to commonly thought of policies, the agency also offers specialty insurance for those who need to cover a mobile home, motorcycle, snow mobile, ATV and more. If a business has a hard time finding affordable insurance, window washers for example, Rettura can help with that too.
One of the biggest misconceptions, according to Rettura, is how the premiums are set. Laurel Highlands Insurance has little to do with it.
“Insurance is based on their costs. If costs are rising when it comes to auto repair, home repair and others, regardless of the carrier, there’s a formula they calculate,” Rettura said. “We use Erie Insurance because there isn’t anyone else close to treating our clients as well as Erie has treated their clients. Even when you have questions from there, give us a call, and we can discuss your coverage and ways to lower the price if needed.”
Through it all, the agents at Laurel Highlands hope to educate, support and help when those tricky insurance questions come up.
“People become friends with members of our agency. We get a lot of referrals - it actually accounts for 65% of our business - and our retention rate is 93% for policy holders year after year. The industry average is in the mid-80’s,” Rettura said. “We want to make the process of buying and maintaining insurance as easy and painless as possible for our policy holders.”
They were voted first place for insurance agencies in the Herald Standard’s Community Choice Awards, but it wouldn’t be the first time.
“We’ve been nominated several times and won several times. It makes me feel grateful our customers support us. I feel like my competition is myself. We have to be better every year, and it appears we are accomplishing that,” Rettura said.

Malinda Mahoney has worked in antique shops for years.
She moved to Florida, and a few months later, when she returned to Uniontown, a store front had become available. She jumped at the chance to own her own shop, and Retro Antiques Vintage & More opened in April 2024.
“Timing is everything and if I weren’t doing this, I don’t know what I’d do with my life,” Mahoney said. “I love coming to work every day.”
The Uniontown store features 15 antique and vintage dealers, each with their own booth. They shop at estate sales, flea markets, garage sales and more to find a variety of items ranging from clothing to furniture.
Some dealers have handmade jewelry, homemade soaps, unique gifts and collectibles. Mahoney said they have plenty of
vinyl records, a popular find right now, and posters featuring The Beatles, Frank Zappa and Hank Williams.
“We have a signed guitar from the Righteous Brothers and Jack Daniels whiskey barrels straight from the distillery. Just six weeks ago, we brought in a new 3D toy vendor who makes their items right here in Morgantown,” Mahoney said.
Above all, she hopes to create an environment dealers and customers enjoy.
“I want every customer to feel like they are the only customer that matters. I want to hear your stories. I’m interested in their lives and what brings them in,” Mahoney said. “I also believe I have the best dealers in town. They could not be more supportive and encouraging, and we’ve become a family. We go out and eat together or go shopping together. I like to say I didn’t find them; they found me a year and half ago.”
They also have a lot of fun.
Recently, Retro Antiques Vintage & More
became the exclusive seller of Jim Burger’s book, reflecting on his childhood in Uniontown, “The Long Journey Home – Tales of Growing Up in Uniontown”.
She hosted Burger for a book signing earlier this month, and held a Monster Mash Bash.
Retro Antiques Vintage & More was voted first place in antique store, boutique store and ‘best of’ a woman-owned business in the Herald-Standard’s Community Choice Awards.
“I love that we won first place in boutique because we literally have something for everyone, and I’m very proud to be a woman-owned business,” Mahoney said.
She also recognizes that success doesn’t come from just one person.
“If you don’t have the right people around you, you can’t be successful, so I’m very blessed,” she said.

More than 15 booths featuring a variety of furniture, clothing and antique items keep customers coming back for more as inventory is constantly updated at Retro Antiques Vintage & More.

Caleb, Daniel and Ben Bradmon grew up in the Rices Landing area and recently opened a joint venture in their hometown.
Since May 13, Rices Landing Bistro has been offering an assortment of sandwiches, wraps and cheeseburgers, but the story of how the restaurant came to be is perhaps a surprise even to the brothers.
“Daniel had cancer many years ago and because of all the time in the hospital, he got hooked on the Food Network,” Ben Bradmon said.
In fact, the social media posts leading up to Rices Landing Bistro’s grand opening tell his story in its entirety.
Daniel suffered from two different types of leukemia for the first decade of his life and spent years in and out of hospitals with a bone marrow transplant and numerous other illnesses as a result of all his body had to endure.
But his love for food and creating never waivered.
“He ended up graduating from culinary school, and then he worked at a couple of different restaurants for a few years,” Ben said. “Eventually, we found an opportunity to lease a former restaurant location. We bought all of the equipment and created Rices Landing Bistro.”
With Daniel making a variety of meals in the kitchen and the brothers supporting him, they’ve strived to create a small, local family restaurant where customers enjoy the food and the casual environment.
During Daniel’s illness, he collected a lot of sports memorabilia and autographed jerseys. The brothers have used those to decorate the restaurant.
Rices Landing Bistro features a menu that the entire family can enjoy, including the Pittsburgh sandwich, the Cuban and chicken salad wraps.
“One of our biggest sellers are the Reu-
bens. We do everything we can in-house. For example, the corned beef for the Reubens, we make ourselves,” Ben said. “A lot of people have said they enjoy the fresh, house made dressings, and they enjoy our healthier versions. It doesn’t affect the taste but Daniel will use honey instead of sugar and things along that line.”
The community has been behind them since day one, but Ben said, they continue to get the word out about the bistro. The hope is that they can eventually expand their business.
“If things work out, I think we’d be open to opening a second location or even expanding the location we currently have,” Ben said. “We’re focusing on sandwiches right now, but Daniel is always tweaking the menu and we may branch out to a more expanded menu too.”
Most of all, the brothers hope guests continue to come back and try something new.
“This is fresh food, it’s not fast food. We have great portion sizes. If you leave hungry, it’s your own fault,” Ben said.
Follow Rices Landing Bistro on Facebook for an updated menu and weekly specials advertised.

At Windy Farm Photography, clients can take advantage of Summer Dugan’s family farm in McClellandtown with props and wide open spaces.

By Melissa Gibson Contributing writer
Summer Dugan didn’t find her love for photography until she had her own daughter. Suddenly, getting photos taken and creating lasting memories was one of her priorities.
“I just really enjoyed it and began learning on my own and then taking pictures of my friends’ kids,” Dugan said.
To hone her skills, Dugan took classes at Penn State Fayette and did online training. Then, she practiced, practiced, practiced until she was ready to open McClellandtown-based Windy Farm Photography.
“In 2021, I applied for an LLC and have been a one-woman, family-run show ever since,” Dugan said.
Windy Farm offers family, newborn, preschool, maternity, high school and sports photography. Dugan

will meet the client at a park or other selected spot for photos, but she also lives on a farm in McClellandtown and has plenty of backdrops, wood fences and other props for
those who want to take advantage of the space.
Most of all, she just wants to bring lasting memories to families in the area.
“I have a very large family and during the holidays, we’ll often pull out old photo books and just have a great time laughing and reminiscing. I used to say, ‘My hair isn’t done’ or ‘I haven’t done my makeup’ and when you look back, it’s more about remembering that smile, the memory and the fun we had together,” Dugan said. “I want other people to have that.”
To keep those memories, Dugan suggests printing the physical copy of the photos most people store on their phones, so they aren’t accidentally erased or forgotten.
At Windy Farm Photography, after clients have their session with Dugan, she edits their photos and sends them to the client digitally. From

there, they can pick 20 digital photos, the entire gallery or even gift ideas and keepsakes.
“I’ve been picking up a lot of middle and high school sports leagues, and we can do buttons, magnets and many of them choose a senior banner,” Dugan said.
She loves the idea of creating something people frame and hang in their living rooms or wave proudly at the soccer game.
“I just want people to be happy. I want to create something that people feel is important to them and they can hang on their wall,” Dugan said. “At the same time, I’m super receptive to feedback and things continue to advance
digitally, so I’m always pushing to see what else I can accomplish and where else I can improve.”
Windy Farm was voted first place for photography in the Herald-Standard’s Community Choice Awards.
“I feel amazed that people would vote for me. To think that someone took time out of their day to even nominate me was such a neat feeling, and to win, I just can’t believe it. I feel so blessed,” Dugan said.
