I
n this issue we a lot of artistic editorial and floral submissions. This issue also had some amazing works. We also had the honor to interview celebrity design Jade Marlin and learn about he works in the fashion industry and to learn more about his works. Our back cover was a truly remarkable submission we received and we really enjoyed. We loved submissions with crisp clear imagery and great tones of color. This set was just wowing from the moment we saw it, but so were the rest of submissions!!! It was a hard pick. We really appreciate all the artists who submit to us each issue and hope you all enjoy our summer issue!

OBSCURAE Hello Jade, how are you?
What was your very first design, and how did you come up with the concept?
JADE Doing good, I am excited. It’s a really good day, and I am enjoying it.
JADE My first design was a character of me called “Jade Man” which was me wearing a baseball hat and baggy jeans. “Jade Man” was my first logo. Being an artist I loved to draw and since I played baseball, I wore baseball hats all the time. During that time a lot of companies were using characters, so I felt the initiative to create my own character logo.
OBSCURAE When did you first imagine yourself being a designer? JADE I never imagined being a fashion designer. I wanted to be a baseball player or an architect. Once I started getting into my early teens and early 20’s was when I really started venturing towards the Fashion Industry. I love Karl Kani, and I was spending so much on clothing that I decided that try and create my own brand. OBSCURAE Did you have a pivotal inspiration to be a designer? JADE Yes and No, yes because I thought as a fashion designer it would be fun to see others wearing my brand and no because of the competition. There are so many great brands and companies out there I thought I would get lost in the crowd. OBSCURAE
OBSCURAE Who did you design your first piece for? JADE My first piece was a Jade Marlin suit which I designed for myself. OBSCURAE Did you always see yourself being a designer, or did you have different aspirations? JADE Yeah, I never saw myself as a designer. I always saw myself as an architect...but as time went by, I noticed my love for clothes and chose to put my creativity into something that I loved and something that made me feel confident. OBSCURAE When did you first showcase your designs to the public, how was their response?
JADE I first showcased my design in 2007 and the response was not so good. A lot of people didn’t feel the “Jade Man” logo. They felt as if it had potential; but I needed to go back to the drawing board and create something that gave more expression to the “Jade Man” name. OBSCURAE Did your first showing give you momentum to show more? JADE Defiantly, it gave me to confidence in my brand and myself. OBSCURAE What inspires you on a daily basis? JADE I just stay focus and dedicated on who I am. Sometimes that means meditating. I do my research to see what is trending and always have faith to keep moving forward. It also helps that I have an amazing mom who has always had my back and a team to push me forward.

OBSCURAE Have you designed for anyone famous? JADE No, I know people that wear the Jade Marlin Brand but no one has made a direct order. OBSCURAE What did you design for them? (If you did) JADE The Jade Marlin Suits. OBSCURAE What tools do you use when designing?
thinking throughout that day, I let the pencil bring to life. From there I go to the computer to do a 3D rendering graphic. Then I send it to get a proof which will then come back to me as a sample. If I like the sample we will go forward with the design and production. OBSCURAE Do you have a team to help, or do you design on your own? JADE I do design on my own, but I do have a team known as my “Jade Family” which helps promote the brand.
JADE I use airbrushes, pencils (Of course pencils) pens, rulers. Those are the basics that I use.
OBSCURAE Do you have any pieces that are special to you?
OBSCURAE What process do you use each design process?
JADE Defiantly, The Chester John hats and shoes are special in honor of my Grandfather.
JADE The first process is to have a drawing board. A clean sheet of paper is always needed. Whatever I went through and whatever I am
OBSCURAE Is there anything you would like to tell the audience who is reading this article?
JADE Yes Defiantly, Stay focused and stay on your pathway to your dreams. If you have faith and hope you will stay strong and overcome that mountain, whatever it may be. OBSCURE Do you have anything else you would like to add? JADE I would just like to give thanks to everyone who has and is supporting me through all my trails and errors. Without them; achieving my dream would be a lot harder.
