Danny was very excited.

Granny was coming to stay.

She always came to Danny’s house for her birthday.

I always have FUN when Granny’s around!

Mum got Danny’s bedroom ready for her.

Danny hid his dirty football under his bed.

Then he stood at the window, waiting.

‘She’s here!’ yelled Danny at last.

He turned around in a rush and almost flattened his little sister Susie.

Out of my way, Susie!

Granny’s hugs were too tight.

Her perfume smelt awful.

But Granny said: ‘Let’s all go to

Good Time Grub tomorrow for my birthday.’

YUM! Chips – a giant burger – ice-cream!

‘Yipee!’ said Danny.

Good Time Grub was his favourite place to eat.

Later that night, Granny gave Danny 50c.

‘You’re such a kind boy to give me your bedroom,’ she said.

Wow! I’m rich!

Danny pushed Susie out of his way. ‘Can I do anything else for you, Granny?’ he asked sweetly.

‘Get me a glass of water for my teeth, dear,’ said Granny.

Why do Granny’s teeth need a DRINK?

Danny was puzzled.

But he got the glass for Granny.

Then she opened her mouth –

and took out all her teeth.

‘Wow!’ said Danny.

What GI-NOR-MOUS teeth!

Granny left her teeth on the bathroom shelf and went to bed.

Danny stared and stared at

Granny’s teeth.

‘Hello, Danny,’ they seemed to say, in a friendly sort of way.

Next morning, Danny was getting ready for school.

Granny’s teeth were still in the glass.

‘Hi, chompers!’ said Danny.

Mum and Dad were having breakfast in the kitchen.

Susie was playing.

Granny was snoring loudly.

Danny closed the bathroom door.

He dipped his fingers into the glass.

You will have more fun OUT of Granny’s mouth!

He lifted out

Granny’s teeth.

They were wet and slippery.

Danny stuck the teeth into his mouth.

‘Yuck,’ he said.

Granny’s teeth had a strange taste.

YUCK! Granny should CLEAN her teeth!

Danny rinsed the teeth under the tap and tried them on again.

HELL-OOOOOOO!

He made a wicked face at himself in the mirror.

Then he had

a wonderful idea.

I could have fun with Granny’s teeth at school, he thought.

Granny won’t need them until I get home.

He dried Granny’s teeth on the towel.

When you want some FUN – Danny’s NUMBER ONE!

He threw the towel on the bathroom floor and stuffed the teeth deep into his pocket.

He ran out of the bathroom.

He grabbed his schoolbag.

VROOOOM! VROOOOM!

He ran down the stairs.

‘Watch where you’re going!’ said Mum. She was carrying a tray up to Granny.

Granny’s boiled egg rolled off.

It hit poor Susie on the head.

WAAAAAAAH!

‘Danny!’ shouted Mum. ‘I’m off!’ said Danny before she could say another word.

There were lots of children in the yard when Danny got to school.

‘Look what I have,’ said Danny to his friends Mark and Darren.

DUM-DE-DUM-DE-DUM. It’s time to have some FUN!

Mark pushed Granny’s

teeth into his mouth.

He looked very funny.

‘Hello, dear!’ he said in a strange voice.

Then Danny put them on.

‘Rrrrroooooaaaaarrrr!’ he snarled at some smaller boys who came to watch.

‘Me next!’ shouted Darren.

Danny threw Granny’s

teeth to Darren.

Darren stuck

Granny’s teeth out over his bottom lip.

‘Look – it’s Funny Bunny!’ said Mark.

My Granny’s teeth are the BEST!

All the boys laughed.

Danny was very pleased that he had Granny’s teeth at school.

‘Can I have a go, Danny?’ said Conor Daly.

‘No,’ said Danny.

‘You’re not my friend, Conor Daly.’

Oh no!

It’s BULLY DALY.

Just then the school bell rang and all the children went into class.

But Danny could not find Granny’s teeth anywhere.

‘Where are Granny’s

teeth?’ he shouted.

‘Who has them?’

Quiet!’ said Teacher.

This class is SO giddy.

Danny was very worried.

He had to find

Granny’s teeth.

Danny saw Conor Daly and his friend Tim laughing.

Bully Daly and Terrible Tim are up to something ...

‘Catch!’ whispered Conor.

He threw Granny’s

teeth to Tim.

They landed on the floor.

Teacher looked over.

‘What’s going on down there?’ she asked. ‘Quiet, please.’

Then she turned away.

Tim kicked the teeth back.

Conor crawled under his desk.

He stuck Granny’s teeth in his mouth and made a funny face.

Tim laughed.

UH OH! This is BAD!

But Danny did not laugh.

If Teacher saw Granny’s

teeth, he’d be in big trouble.

Mark grabbed the teeth from Conor and threw them to Danny.

But Danny saw Teacher heading straight for his desk!

Quick as a flash, he threw Granny’s

teeth back.

OH NOOOO! Big trouble!

I can’t let Teacher see Granny’s teeth!

Granny’s teeth flew out the window.

They landed in a puddle in the school yard.

All the boys laughed.

Teacher was cross.

She went to the yard and got the teeth.

‘You are in trouble, Danny Brown,’ she said.

‘Two of these teeth are broken.’

Sometimes Granny doesn’t see very well ...

Danny said nothing.

He stuffed the teeth into his pocket.

Granny will never notice, he thought.

GOOD TIME GRUB is my favourite place – At GOOD TIME GRUB I’ll stuff my face!

As he walked home from school Danny thought about Good Time Grub.

‘I think I’ll have a giant hamburger,’ Danny said to himself.

‘Maybe Granny will have one too.’

But Granny was sitting in the kitchen, looking very cross.

Her arms were folded in front of her.

There was a thin line where her lips should be.

That scallywag is home at last!

Danny sneaked up the stairs.

He went into the bathroom.

He dropped Granny’s teeth back into the glass.

Nobody will ever know.

Yikes!

‘So that’s what happened to Granny’s teeth!’ said a voice behind him.

Mum was at the bathroom door. ‘I have something to say to you, Danny,’ she said crossly.

‘When are we going to Good Time Grub?’ said Danny.

Mum lifted

Granny’s teeth out of the glass.

YIKES! Mum’s going to TRY ON Granny’s teeth!

‘Good Time Grub!’ said Mum. ‘You can forget about Good Time Grub.

Just look at

Granny’s teeth!

They’re broken.

Granny cannot chew without her teeth!’

‘Granny will have to eat

mashed potatoes – just like Susie,’ said Mum. ‘And that’s what you’ll have too!’

GOOEY YUCKY MUSHY...

Danny sat at the table for his dinner.

He looked at the

mashed potatoes. ‘I hate mashed potatoes,’ he said.

Yucky yuck!

Mashy muck!

‘I’ll never do anything like this again,’ he said.

‘Never. Never. Never.’

Danny Brown looked at his toothbrush.

The bristles were bent and twisted.

‘That brush is no good anymore,’ said Mum. ‘Put it in the bin.’

No more silly brushing. Yippee!

Danny was delighted.

He hated brushing his teeth.

‘My teeth are never dirty,’ Danny said.

‘I always lick them clean.’

Sweets … chocolate … gimmee!

Later, Granny came to visit.

She smiled at Danny.

‘Look what I’ve got for you,’ she said.

Granny opened her bag.

She took out a bright, new, shiny, yellow toothbrush.

Yikes! Not another toothbrush!

Danny was not pleased.

I’m going to get rid of this toothbrush, he thought.

But he smiled sweetly.

‘Thanks, Granny,’ he said.

‘It’s so shiny!

I’ll take it upstairs right now.’

Danny went upstairs.

He hated his new toothbrush.

He hit the handle on the stairs.

He hit it very hard.

But the handle didn’t break.

‘Hey you, Hairy Face!’ said Danny.

‘I’m going to destroy you.’

Hairy-Faced Monster!

Suddenly Danny had a

wonderful idea.

‘The loo,’ he said.

‘I’ll flush it down the loo.’

He dashed into the bathroom.

He looked at his new toothbrush.

‘You’re dead!’ he said.

Danny smiled.

Then he lifted the toilet lid.

Plop!

The shiny, new toothbrush fell into the water with a tiny splash.

I’ll never see you again.

Danny closed the lid.

He flushed the toilet.

That will get rid of you, Monster Brush!

‘Goodbye forever, toothbrush,’ he sang.

He grinned at himself in the bathroom mirror.

Then, slowly, he lifted the toilet lid.

He peeped inside.

Uh-oh!

The Monster has evil powers ‌

The new toothbrush was

still there!

It was bobbing about on top of the water.

‘Danny!’ Mum was coming up the stairs.

‘Mark and Darren are here.

Time to play!’

‘Oh no!’ said Danny.

‘What do I do now?’

Danny rolled up his sleeve.

He reached into the toilet.

He fished out his shiny new toothbrush.

‘Yuck,’ he said.

Disgusting, evil, drippy, yellow MONSTER!

We can attack the Monster together.

Danny ran downstairs.

He could feel the wet toothbrush in his pocket.

‘Hi, Mark. Hi, Darren,’ he said.

‘Let’s go to the park.’

Then Danny called his dog.

‘Come on, Keeno,’ he said.

Keeno licked Danny’s face – big wet licks.

‘Yuck!’ said Danny.

Danny and the boys set off.

‘Guess what!’ said Danny to his friends.

‘I need your help.

I have to get rid of something.’

Darren was excited.

‘Sure,’ he said.

‘What is it?’

We’ll be the Monster Attack Team.

‘Granny got me a new toothbrush!’ said Danny.

‘Mum told her to.

Mum’s crazy about brushing teeth.

I have to do it

every morning and every night.

I’m sick of it!’

Danny took the toothbrush from his pocket.

‘I hate it!’ he said.

‘It’s a monster!’ said Mark.

The three boys ran all the way to the park.

Keeno ran with them.

Attack!

Then Danny had an idea.

Danny threw his toothbrush as far as he could.

‘Fetch, Keeno. Fetch!’ he yelled.

Fire!

Keeno ran off.

Soon he was back.

He had the toothbrush in his mouth.

It was wet all over.

Danny, Mark and Darren had lots of fun with Keeno and the toothbrush.

Then they got tired.

They sat down.

‘Hey!’ said Danny.

‘Smell my toothbrush now!’

Yuck!

The boys smelled Danny’s brush.

‘Yuck!’ said Mark.

‘Wicked!’ said Darren.

He held his nose.

He pretended to faint.

Danny and Mark laughed.

Dis–gus–ting!

Slurpy disgusting!

Then Danny had another idea.

‘Keeno needs his hair brushed,’ he said.

‘Let’s use my toothbrush.’

Hairy disgusting!

The boys took turns brushing Keeno’s hair with Danny’s new toothbrush!

Soon it was full of dog hair.

‘It smells worse now!’ said Mark.

‘That’s because Keeno needs a bath!’ said Danny.

‘Let’s go to the pond.’

The pond looked very green.

‘This water is filthy!’ said Danny. ‘Let’s dip my toothbrush in.’

He dipped his toothbrush in the pond.

Soon it was covered in green scum.

‘It’s the Wicked Pond Monster!’ said Darren.

We’re winning!

Danny was having a great time.

Getting rid of his toothbrush was fun.

Suddenly, Mark saw someone coming.

‘Quick!’ he said.

‘It’s Conor Daly!’

Danny and his friends turned to go.

Nobody liked the school bully.

It’s Bully Daly!

It’s … it’s …

Granny gave…

But Conor Daly saw them.

‘What have you got there, Danny?’ he said.

Conor grabbed the toothbrush.

He laughed.

‘That’s a lovely toothbrush, Danny Brown!’ he said.

‘Did it fall in the pond?’

Danny reached for the toothbrush.

But Conor gave him a push.

‘Not so fast!’ he said.

‘There’s something nasty on my shoe.’

Then Conor Daly

cleaned his shoe with Danny’s new toothbrush.

He laughed loudly.

Then he threw the toothbrush at Danny and ran off.

But Danny was thrilled.

Conor Daly had made a mess of his new toothbrush –

forever!

Thank you, Conor Daly.

Danny picked up the new toothbrush.

It looked awful.

It felt awful.

It smelled awful.

‘What do we do now?’ asked Mark.

Sob! Sob!

‘This toothbrush is dead!’ said Danny.

‘We’ll have to bury it!’

Ha! Ha!

Danny, Mark and Darren began to dig a hole.

I’ll NEVER see you again!

Then they tossed the new toothbrush into the hole.

They put clay on top.

They patted the ground firmly.

‘Gone forever!’ said Danny.

He danced on the clay.

Darren and Mark danced on it too.

Victory for the Monster Attack Team!

‘We have destroyed the Monster Toothbrush!’ shouted Darren.

The three boys cheered.

Danny was delighted.

‘It’s gone!’ he cried.

‘Gone. Gone. Gone.’

No more disgusting Monster Brush!

Danny would never see his new toothbrush again.

‘Hello, boys,’ called a voice.

Danny looked around.

It was Mum and Danny’s little sister, Susie.

Uh-oh!

‘Just in time!’ said Danny to his friends.

Oooooh! Treats!

‘We’ve brought a little picnic,’ said Mum. ‘Who’s hungry?’

‘Me! Me! Me!’ yelled Danny, Mark and Darren together.

They all sat down on the grass.

Susie began to crawl.

‘Go and explore, Susie,’ said Mum.

‘Yes, Susie, give us some peace,’ said Danny.

The boys laughed.

After a while, Mum looked up.

‘Susie is digging again,’ she said.

‘Susie loves digging.’

Soon Susie came back.

She had something in her mouth.

For Danny!

Danny couldn’t believe his eyes.

‘Oh no!’ he cried.

‘It’s my new toothbrush!’

Mum took the toothbrush.

‘Oh dear!’ she cried.

‘Your lovely new toothbrush, Danny! Were you showing it to your friends?’

Danny looked at the toothbrush.

He was in trouble now!

He felt sick.

Uh … aaah …. I…. aaaaah!

But Mum said: ‘Don’t worry.

I’ll clean it. I’ve got a special cleaner.

You’ll be able to use it tonight, Danny! I promise.’

Danny thought of

Conor Daly’s dirty shoe.

He thought of

Keeno’s dribbles.

He thought of the

dirty pond.

He thought of

Susie’s digging.

And then Danny thought of ...

THE LOO!

Danny fell back on the grass.

‘I’ll never do anything like this again,’ he said.

Danny was in a big hurry.

He grabbed his warm coat.

He put the lead on Keeno.

‘Let’s go, Grandpa,’ he said.

‘I’m ready.’

You’re so slow, Grandpa!

‘Just a minute!’ said Mum. ‘It’s cold. Susie will need her hat.

The woolly one with the big pink bobble.’

Susie’s a nuisance!

Danny didn’t want Susie to come.

He whispered to Grandpa: ‘Susie can stay at home.

It’s too cold for babies.’

Grandpa smiled.

‘It’s cold for animals, too,’ he said.

‘Some animals die from the cold.

And Keeno has no hat!

Maybe we should leave

Keeno at home.’

‘No way!’ said Danny.

Danny and Grandpa walked to the park.

‘Walk quickly, Danny,’ said Grandpa. ‘It will help you to keep warm.’

Hi ho! Hi ho!

It’s off to the park we go!

‘Come on, Keeno!’ called Danny.

‘Hurry up or you’ll die from the cold.’

Could Keeno die of cold?

‘Grandpa,’ asked Danny, ‘how do animals keep warm in winter?’

‘Some animals grow thick woolly coats,’ said Grandpa.

Poor Keeno has no coat, thought Danny.

‘And hedgehogs hibernate,’ added Grandpa.

‘Do you know what that means, Danny?’

Emmmmm...

Danny wasn’t sure.

‘Of course I do!’ he said.

‘It means they go hyper.’

Grandpa laughed out loud.

‘Ho! Ho! Ho!’

‘No, Danny,’ he said.

‘It means they go for a long winter sleep.’

Suddenly a small, grey squirrel darted along the ground.

‘Look,’ whispered Grandpa.

‘That squirrel is gathering nuts.

Squirrels collect lots of nuts for the cold winter days.’

Hey! I’m not a nut!

‘That’s very clever,’ said Danny.

Soon they came to the lake.

The water was frozen.

Grandpa took some bread out of his pocket.

‘Let’s feed the ducks,’ he said.

Icy bottoms!

Danny stared at the ducks.

They slid along the ice. ‘Their little bottoms must be frozen,’ he said.

Susie watched Grandpa throw bread to the ducks.

‘Quack! Quack! Quack!’ she said.

The bobble on her hat bobbed up and down.

Keeno stood by the edge of the lake and shivered.

Danny looked at Susie’s hat.

Keeno needs a hat, he thought.

Then he had a great idea.

He grabbed Susie’s woolly hat.

‘Keeno!’ whispered Danny.

‘Come here, boy!’

Susie’s far too hot!

Keeno ran to Danny.

Danny put Susie’s woolly hat on Keeno’s head.

‘Woof!’ barked Keeno.

‘Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah!’ cried Susie.

Oh no! thought Danny.

What will I do?

Duck bread for Susie! Yum!

Danny could see bread in Grandpa’s pocket.

He pulled out some of the bread.

‘Here, Susie,’ he whispered.

But Keeno snatched the bread.

He raced around the park.

He barked and jumped.

Susie’s hat went flying up into a tree.

Grandpa laughed till he shook.

Then he got a stick and hit Susie’s hat down.

It fell in the mud.

Oops!

‘Oh, Danny!’ said Grandpa.

‘I think we’re in trouble!’

Oh no!

More trouble!

But when they got home nobody saw the dirty hat.

Granny was complaining.

‘It’s so cold!’ she grumbled.

She was wearing her big blue cardigan.

She pulled it tightly around her.

Danny thought Granny looked like a

huge hedgehog.

‘Why don’t you hibernate, Granny?’ he asked.

A whole winter without Granny!

Yippee!

Mum laughed.

‘Try these first,’ she said.

She held up two big pink woolly socks.

‘They’re bedsocks,’ she explained.

‘Wonderful!’ Granny said.

‘Every night my feet are like

two lumps of ice!’

Poor Keeno’s cold too!

Danny had an idea.

‘Mum,’ he said. ‘Keeno needs warm woollies too.

Will you knit something for him?’

‘Are you crazy?’ cried Mum. ‘Dogs don’t need woollies!’

And Mum walked off without another word.

Danny was very cross.

He saw Susie’s hat on the table.

He took the hat and put it on Keeno’s head.

Susie’s gloves were on a chair.

Danny took the gloves and put them on Keeno’s front paws.

I’ll warm you up, Keeno!

‘You need something for your back paws too, Keeno,’ said Danny.

‘They might turn to ice like Granny’s feet!’

Suddenly Danny had a great idea.

‘I know what you can wear!

Granny’s bedsocks!

They’ll do the trick!’

Danny put Granny’s bedsocks on Keeno.

Keeno yawned – a big, long yawn.

‘Keeno!’ cried Danny excitedly.

‘You should hibernate like the hedgehog.’

Lovely warm dog!

Then Danny thought of the clever squirrel with his pile of nuts.

‘And you should have lots of food like the squirrel,’ he said.

He went to a cupboard.

It was full of tins of dog food.

Danny opened lots of tins.

He gathered them up in his arms.

‘Now, let’s find somewhere for you to hibernate!’ he said.

Hi ho! Hi ho!

It’s off to bed we go!

Keeno followed Danny upstairs.

The spare bedroom was empty.

‘This is perfect, Keeno!’ whispered Danny.

Danny left the dog food on the floor.

He put Keeno in one of the beds.

‘Now, go to sleep, Keeno!’ he said.

All sorted, and nobody noticed!

Everyone was watching television when Danny came downstairs.

‘The weather forecast is very bad,’ said Grandpa.

‘Icy roads tonight!’

‘We’ll have to drive carefully,’ Granny warned.

‘We don’t want to have an accident.’

But Mum had a better idea.

‘You should stay here!

You can sleep in the spare bedroom!’

Grandpa looked at Granny.

‘That would be much safer,’ he said.

‘And you’ve got your warm woolly bedsocks for the night!

You’ll be snug as a bug.’

Danny was shocked.

Oh no! he thought.

He darted upstairs.

Yikes!

‘Keeno! Keeno!’ called Danny.

‘It’s time to get up!’

Danny went into the spare bedroom.

The tins of food were scattered all over the floor.

The quilt was a mess.

Keeno was covered in dogfood.

And he was chewing Granny’s bedsocks!

‘Oh no!’ cried Danny.

Just then, Danny heard Granny coming up the stairs. ‘Goodnight, everyone!’ she called.

I must stop Granny!

Danny ran to the bedroom door.

He held out his arms.

‘No, Granny!’ he yelled.

‘No! No! No! You can’t go in there.’

Mum and Grandpa hurried up the stairs.

‘What’s the matter?’ said Mum.

‘Granny can’t go in there!’ yelled Danny.

‘Why not?’ asked Grandpa.

‘It’s ... It’s too cold in there!’ cried Danny.

‘Her feet will turn into two lumps of ice!’

Put Granny in the shed!

‘I’ll get her new bedsocks!’ said Grandpa.

Granny lifted Danny out of her way.

She opened the door and went in.

‘Woof! Woof!’ barked Keeno.

Granny stopped.

‘Good heavens!’ she shrieked.

Mum and Grandpa ran in.

‘What’s wrong?’ asked Mum.

Danny peeped in at them.

Granny was standing beside the bed.

Her feet were covered in dogfood.

She was pulling her new bedsocks out of Keeno’s mouth.

‘Woof! Woof!’ he barked.

He jumped at Granny, then he lifted his leg and

wet Granny’s feet!

‘Danny!’ yelled Mum.

Granny spoke to Danny on the phone.

‘You’re all coming to stay at my house,’ she said.

‘You, Susie, Mum and Dad. For the whole weekend.’

Yippee!

‘Great!’ said Danny.

Danny looked at his dog, Keeno.

‘Can I bring Keeno instead of Susie?’ he asked.

Granny laughed.

‘Oh Danny!’ she said.

‘Don’t be mean.

Keeno can come too.’

‘And,’ said Granny, ‘I have a big secret to show you.’

When they got to Granny’s house Danny was very excited.

‘Show me your secret, Granny!’ he said.

I love secrets.

Granny took Danny upstairs.

She went into the spare room.

I’m in charge of Granny’s big secret.

‘You will sleep here, Danny,’ she said. ‘And this is where I hid my secret.

You must look after it for me.’

Granny opened the wardrobe door.

On a shelf was a big birthday cake.

It had fluffy white icing all over the top.

There were decorations all around the edges.

Yum!

And there were

four big pink candles on the top.

Danny was puzzled.

‘But, Granny,’ he said, ‘who’s going to be four?

Not me. Not Susie.

Not Keeno.’

Granny smiled.

‘It’s for your mum,’ she said.

‘Tomorrow is her birthday.

But she mustn’t see the cake.

It’s my surprise.’

Granny’s so crazy!

‘But Mum’s not four!’ said Danny.

Granny just smiled.

‘You keep my secret, Danny,’ she said.

‘I’ll keep your secret, Granny,’ said Danny.

‘I won’t tell Mum.’ It’s our secret, Granny.

Granny gave Danny a hug.

‘And you’ll keep Keeno out of this room, won’t you, dear?’ she said.

‘He can sleep outside.’

Granny’s so mean!

Danny was stunned.

Keep Keeno out of

my room! he thought.

No way!

But he smiled at Granny. ‘Your secret is safe, Granny,’ he said sweetly.

You can trust me, Granny!

When Granny left, Danny thumped the bed.

‘No! No! No!’ he said.

‘Keeno always sleeps in my room.

Granny can’t put him

outside.’

Then Danny had a great idea. ‘I could find a hiding place here for Keeno.’ He looked around the room.

First, Danny looked under the bed.

He tried to crawl in.

But there wasn’t much room.

Then he tried the big wooden blanket box.

Then he opened the wardrobe.

There was plenty of room for a dog in there.

There was even Aaaaaah! Smelly!

Keeno will LOVE it!

a nice smell.

‘This is a great hiding place,’ said Danny.

‘I’ll put Keeno in here!’

Danny looked at

Granny’s secret.

He was worried.

‘If Keeno eats Granny’s surprise,’ he said, ‘I’ll be in big trouble!’

‘I know what I’ll do!’ cried Danny suddenly.

‘I’ll find another hiding place for Granny’s secret!

Then Keeno can hide in the wardrobe!’

Danny lifted the cake out of the wardrobe.

‘This is not very big,’ he said to himself.

‘This will fit

under the bed.’

Danny put the cake on the floor.

He slid it under the bed.

But the candles fell off.

‘Those candles were stupid, anyway,’ said Danny.

‘Mum is much older than four.’

Granny’s so stupid!

Suddenly Mum came into the bedroom.

She was carrying her weekend bag.

She walked over to the bed.

She put the bag on the floor.

‘At last,’ she said, ‘I’ve finished unpacking.’

Mum kicked the bag

under the bed!

Then she left the room.

Mum’s so silly!

Danny was speechless.

‘Oh no!’ said Danny.

‘Mum has ruined Granny’s secret.’

He crawled under the bed.

He pulled the bag out.

He reached for Granny’s secret and dragged it out.

There was an old shoe stuck in the lovely icing.

Danny was very cross with Mum. ‘It’s her own fault if she gets no surprise!’ he said.

‘Mum should be more careful!’

Looking after Granny’s secret is so HARD!

Danny decided to find a better hiding place for Granny’s secret.

He lifted the lid of the big wooden blanket box.

Perfect!

Very carefully, Danny put Granny’s secret on top of the blankets.

He closed the lid.

‘Now,’ said Danny, ‘Granny’s secret is safe.’

He raced downstairs to get Keeno.

Yippeee! Come on, Keeno!

Danny sneaked Keeno up to the bedroom.

He found Susie sitting on the floor, playing with her bricks.

‘Out of my way, Susie!’ said Danny.

‘I have to hide Keeno.’

Lucky Susie can’t talk!

Danny pushed past his sister.

He opened the wardrobe door.

He put Keeno in.

Ouch!

‘Time for bed,’ yelled Dad. He came into the bedroom.

He tripped on a brick.

He hurt his foot.

‘What a mess, Susie!’ said Dad. He picked up Susie’s bricks.

He lifted the lid of the blanket box.

He threw the bricks in.

He carried Susie downstairs.

Danny was shocked.

He lifted the lid quickly and peeped inside.

Two of Susie’s bricks were stuck in Mum’s birthday cake.

Dad’s so careless!

Danny fell back on the floor.

‘Dad!’ he groaned crossly, ‘you’ve ruined Granny’s secret!’

‘Granny’s secret isn’t safe in this room,’ said Danny.

‘I’ll have to find somewhere else for it.’

Suddenly he had a great idea.

‘The shed!’ he said.

‘I’ll hide Granny’s secret

in the shed!

Mum will never find it there!’

Nobody saw me!

Later, when everyone sat down to watch television, Danny crept downstairs with Granny’s secret.

He took it out to the shed.

Danny put Granny’s secret in the corner of the shed.

‘Granny’s secret is safe at last!’ he said.

‘And Keeno is safe too.’

Danny ran upstairs and got into bed.

All sorted!

Soon Granny came into the room with Susie.

She put Susie in the cot.

A strange noise came from the wardrobe.

Granny jumped.

‘What was that?’ she said.

‘It was Susie!’ cried Danny.

‘She burped!’

I’m so smart!

Granny laughed and gave Danny another goodnight kiss.

As soon as Granny left the room, Danny jumped out of bed.

He opened the wardrobe door.

‘It’s safe, Keeno!’ he cried.

‘You can come out now.’

‘Woof! Woof!’ barked Keeno happily.

But Granny came back into the room.

‘Out!’ she yelled.

She marched Keeno down the stairs.

Dogs are a pain!

Next day, everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Mum.

Granny got her camera ready.

‘Now you must blow out your candles,’ she said.

Mum looked puzzled.

‘But I don’t have any candles,’ she said.

‘We don’t even have a cake!’ laughed Dad.

Granny winked at Danny.

‘We have a secret, don’t we, Danny?’ she said.

‘Let’s go and get it.’

Granny started to go upstairs.

‘No, Granny!’ whispered Danny.

‘Your secret wasn’t safe there.

I put it in the shed.’

‘In the shed!’ cried Granny.

‘But that’s where I put Keeno!’

Danny’s so naughty!

Granny’s so stupid!

Granny ran out to the shed.

Danny shut his eyes tightly.

I hope Keeno doesn’t like icing, he thought.

Soon Granny marched out of the shed again.

Her face was purple.

She was dragging Keeno with one hand.

And she was holding Mum’s birthday cake in the other hand.

Danny opened his eyes.

‘Oh no!’ he said.

He looked at the cake.

The candles were gone.

There was an old shoe sitting on the top.

Two of Susie’s bricks were stuck in the icing.

And Keeno had eaten a big hole in the cake!

‘Danny!’ yelled Granny.

‘You’ve ruined my secret!’

Danny ran.

‘It’s Mum’s fault!

It’s Dad’s fault!

It’s Keeno’s fault!’ he squealed.

I’m in big trouble!

He ran all around the garden.
