Welcome to Term Two at New Plymouth Boys High School. The staff have been impressed with the quality start that students have made for 2016. Our students are responding to our increased intensity around academic performance. We are grateful for parent/caregiver support. At the end of Term One we posted out a copy of every student's academic results. Teachers, students and parents can see how students are tracking either against the Junior Diploma (for years 9/10) or NCEA for years 11, 12 and 13. The simplified one page results sheet highlights how many credits the student has to date, how many credits are available and how many credits are required to pass. In week 5 and 10 of Term 2 all parents and students will receive an updated results sheet. Your attention to this information is appreciated. Parents, please make sure your updated contacts details are held with the office including a mobile phone and email address if you have one. At the end of this video we have included a link to a helpful NCEA video clip which we encourage all parents to watch. Noah Jones, the runner up to the Dux (school’s top academic) in 2015, was accepted into the prestigious Harvard University, in the USA to study Science. Only a handful of students each year in NZ are selected to such Universities. We are very pleased for Noah and this outstanding achievement. Thank you to those parents who have paid their voluntary donation already for 2016. We are humbled and grateful at just how many parents make this payment each year. It is through your commitment we are able to offer students additional opportunities and access to resources we simply wouldn’t be able to provide.

Some of these things include:  Additional teachers to keep class sizes down  Additional Deans and Guidance staff  Additional investment in technology Infrastructure (future proofing our school)  Sport and cultural equipment and programmes  Beautification and improvement environment and facilities

our

 Reward and recognition programmes for our students  Library resources, digital archiving and school communications  Upkeep of our school swimming pool  Synthetic hockey turf facility

Please contact student services to arrange payment or if you have any questions. One of the real pleasures of this job is seeing how NPBHS has positively influenced careers and lives beyond school. This is demonstrated every day through the achievements of our old boys. We have re-started our special and free old boy tours. We have held many of these and welcome any groups of old boys to contact the school and arrange for a tour of their school. A minimum number of 15 old boys is required to enable us to provide the best and special tour experience but any old boy is welcome at their school anytime. It is incredible to see how much NPBHS still means to them after in some cases half a century or more. Old Boys are also very supportive of the school financially. If old boys are interested in supporting the school either through sponsorship or donation please do not hesitate to contact me. The challenges of delivering a modern and diverse school is today’s environment is challenging and the generosity from the community is appreciated. Terms 2 and 3 are very busy for sport and culture. A reminder to the schools community that while we believe active participation in sport and culture are instrumental to building great young men this does not occur to the detriment of our priority for students which is their academic achievement. Sport and Culture is not an excuse to not achieve academically. Our school cross country was held at the end of Term 2. Five minutes before the start the sky opened up and it pelted down for the rest of the afternoon. This made for a true cross country. I saw loads of smiles albeit wet ones. We apologise to all parents for the additional laundry time in cleaning and drying clothes and boys after this event... I assure you as someone who participated in it, your efforts were well worth it!

Our school Cross Country Champions were: Junior 1 Mac Rowe 2 Joe Collins 3 Regan Giford

Intermediate 1 Calum Sutherland 2 Jack Elliot 3 Oak Jones

Senior 1 Angus White 2 Chris Devany 3 Alex Sturmer

Niu Sila, a joint production by New Plymouth Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, was certainly entertainment not to be missed. Our congratulations to the production team and cast on an awesome show. The whole team can take pride in the polished performances given, with excellent musical and stage crew backing, to near sell-out crowds!

I encourage all friends of the school to like our facebook page. It is the easiest way to keep up to date with events and information about the school. While on the topic of social media and, as unpopular as it will make me with the students, as our academic year intensifies, a message to parents, and support, that it is perfectly acceptable to limit social media and social device/internet time. Students need to make some sacrifices in order to get the very best out of their time at NPBHS and achieve their academic goals. We continue to celebrate excellence at NPBHS and I am pleased to list all students who have achieved the prestigious Tiger Jacket Award for 2016. These students have worked extremely hard in their respective fields and on behalf of the school community we congratulate them. Finally, at the end of this term we will be asking parents, staff, students and the wider community how you think NPBHS is performing. Look out for your chance to have a say on your school on a range of topics including Headmaster performance!

Thank you for your ongoing support and feedback as we strive to live up to our challenging yet attainable vision of ‘Be The Example’.
