NEW PLYMOUTH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL TE KURA TAMATANE O NGAMOTU JULY 2017

WELCOME

TO OUR NEWSLETTER Firstly, it’s great to be able to report the completed upgrade of our library. For three terms we have been without this building and now to have it back is fantastic. This, along with the recently earthquake strengthened Ryder Hall, are significant undertakings and have been a major disruption to the running of the school. I wish to thank the staff and students for being so patient as the works have been completed. The end result has been superb.

Academic Success is Every Student’s Priority As a parent what can you do to help your son achieve to his potential? • Know exactly how many credits your son has and how many he has left to achieve. This can be found out from looking on our parent portal or the various results reports we regularly email out. • Discuss the fortnightly engagement and attendance report with your son. Contact us if you have any concerns about these reports. • Have high expectations around study and school for your son. The higher we set the goal, the higher the attainment. • Make sure your son gets to school on time and is organised with the right uniform and equipment he needs. Aim for 8.30am to ensure your son has time to get to his class. • The developing brain of a teenager needs sleep, so limiting internet, gaming and TV late at night can ensure your son gets the vital sleep he needs to perform at his peak. In 2017 we have implemented a new senior curriculum allowing our young men to choose courses that assist with their pathways. This curriculum is a mixture of the traditional full year courses and a number of half year semester courses. The first half year semesters all finished on Friday June 16. All seniors were issued with new timetables and have started their second half year courses.

IMPROVING THE FUTURE SINCE 1882

School Donation Like with all projects there are hidden costs, and many of these are not covered by the Ministry of Education. It is timely to recognise and thank those parents who have been able to pay the school donation. We are humbled every year by the large number of you who pay this. Without this many of the amazing additional services and opportunities we offer as a school would not occur. I thank you for your ongoing commitment and support. If you wish to make contact about how to pay your donation, please do so.

ERO ERO visited NPBHS in Term 1 and I am delighted to report back on the glowing confirmed report we received. The report can be summarised with this quote:

‘At NPBHS, many students achieve success in a broad range of learning areas, options and extra - curricular activities. The school is welcoming, inclusive and promotes a strong sense of belonging and connection, valuing diversity and difference. The school is well placed to sustain and improve its performance.’

Expectations As winter sport continues to run it is important to remember your obligations as a player and supporter. We train, practice and play to win. Winning is important at NPBHS. However, we are good men, we are the example at all times. We respect our opposition, officials and the facilities we are at. It is the school’s expectations that we leave the facilities in better condition than we found them. Captains - it is your responsibility and duty to ensure we measure up to our high standards every week.

Yr 13 Ball The Yr 13 Ball was on Saturday, 10 June. What a tremendous celebration of all that is good with the youth of today. Students worked tirelessly to decorate and theme our assembly hall. They practised and perfected the challenging pursuit of ballroom dancing. Young men were respectful of their partners, formally introducing them to staff and conducting themselves at all times in the manner that is appropriate to a formal occasion. What a display of maturity, organisation and pride in what is a fantastic tradition at NPBHS!

As a school we are fortunate to have so many staff who coach and manage sports teams. Sadly this is not the norm in secondary schools and I would like to take the opportunity to publicly recognise all those staff who give up their time away from their own families to support our young men in their sporting and cultural interests. While it is never expected, a thank you at the end of your game to your coach/manager goes a long way and would be appreciated I am sure!
