Welcome to Oasis Church Waterloo

Oasis Church Waterloo is a community of ordinary people exploring life together, where everyone is welcomed. Our mission is simply this: To be an example of what an inclusive community, living Christ’s way, looks like and acts like.

We meet at 11am and 6.30pm each Sunday in the Oasis Auditorium, opposite Lambeth North tube station.

Our vision To support one another in the joys and struggles of our everyday lives and responsibilities, as well as to work to build a safe and inspiring local neighbourhood here ‘in the community surrounding our building here in Waterloo. Our goal is that Waterloo should be a place where people are happy and proud to live, learn and work alongside one another and where every person is valued and is empowered to reach their full God-given potential.

Our story We’re striving to build on our church’s long and rich history of working for community transformation. Beginning its life as Surrey Chapel in 1783, our church was, for instance, a major influence in the start of the Ragged School Movement – which provided schools for local children – and also supported the birth of the Shaftesbury Society, the YMCA and the Bible Society.

That same commitment to serve Christ through ‘loving God’ and ‘loving our neighbours as ourselves’ continues to underpin the work of what is now called Oasis Church Waterloo.

Historically our church community was also influential in the anti-slavery movement; William Wilberforce and friends made our building a central London base for many of their anti-slavery meetings, and our spire is named the Lincoln Tower, donated in memory of Abraham Lincoln by friends inspired by his work to achieve the emancipation

of the slaves of North America. Today this same passion to end modern slavery continues to inspire the work of one of the Oasis family of charities; ‘Stop The Traffik’. For more information go to www.stopthetraffik.org Oasis Trust was founded in 1985, and now works in 10 countries providing housing, youth work, health care, education and more. In 2003 its founder, Steve Chalke, became the senior minister of Christ Church & Upton Chapel (as our church was by then called). Over the decade since then our renewed vision has led to the development of a wide range of community services focussed on the half-mile radius around our spire, aiming to bring the same story of hope and community transformation on which our church was first founded, 230 years ago.

Sunday services We meet on Sundays in the Oasis Auditorium (opposite Lambeth North tube station) at 11am for a relaxed, informal service supported by a crèche, kids’ church and youth church. Our evening congregation meets at 6.30pm.

Oasis Church Waterloo’s vision has led to the development of Oasis Hub Waterloo, which now includes Oasis Playspace (our children’s centre), the Oasis primary and secondary schools – Johanna and South Bank – and a huge range of other community projects including Oasis Farm, two choirs and various children’s and youth football teams.

Prayer is an important part of our life as a community. So how can we pray for you?

If you would like to talk or pray with someone at the end of our Sunday services, please go to the prayer area – which is in the gallery at the back of our tiered seating. Or, if you’d prefer to remain anonymous, please outline your request on the tear-off slip of the news sheet and place it in the offering bucket. Our prayer team will pray for you during the week ahead.

Every week we also help to put food on the table for struggling families through the work of Waterloo Foodbank, support people burdened by debt through our debt advice service, and work with young people in the context of St. Thomas’ Hospital to provide support to those who are vulnerable and have been impacted by violence.

Pastoral support

Small Groups

Pastoral appointments are available during the week. If you need to talk to or pray with a pastor or member of our church team, please call 020 7921 4241 or email welcome@oasiswaterloo.org to set up a time. Alternatively, please fill in the tear-off slip on the weekly news sheet and we will be in touch with you.

Help is available for you.

Our small groups play an important role in the pastoral life of our church. They meet in people’s homes, mainly on a Wednesday evening. Through membership of a small group you will find encouragement, enjoy an environment where you can eat, chat, pray and support each other, and at the same time develop new friendships.

Our pastors are also available to officiate at your wedding ceremony or at the blessing of your child – in which parents make an active commitment to raise their child within the Christian faith and community.
