Connoisseurs of the AKS musical over the years will have noted the tendency for most of the cast to die at the end, albeit with a bit of razzle-dazzle along the way. The songs, at least, were cheerful.
From a bleak inspiration, where Victor Hugo witnessed a thief being escorted away by a police officer, comes this extraordinary and deep story. In spite of its downbeat title, the musical version of one of the longest novels ever written (a staggering 655,478 words in the original French), is a distillation into a remarkably uplifting and resonant tale of struggle and redemption. Indeed, as the headline of The Stage’s review of the UK premiere proclaimed, there is ‘no need to be glum’.
Les Mis has been perpetually revived and stands as the longest-running musical in the West End (not show, of course – that’s still The Mousetrap). Our own production is, as always, a dream dreamed by our brilliant Head of Drama, Martha Worthington, and the exceptional flotilla of performers from our Music Department and beyond, hosted by the Lowther Pavilion crew and countless friends and supporters across our community.
It’s more a steady stream than a passing of the baton but we will witness another generation of performers hit the stage alongside others who have, extraordinarily, become old hands even in their youth. So, once again, let us settle into our seats, and hear the people sing.

SYNOPSIS
In 19th-century France, ex-convict Jean Valjean strives to rebuild his life after years of imprisonment, seeking redemption while being relentlessly pursued by Inspector Javert, a man devoted to the law above all else. Along his journey, Valjean encounters Fantine, a young factory worker who is driven to despair after being unjustly dismissed, forced into poverty to provide for her daughter, Cosette. Honouring a promise to Fantine, Valjean rescues Cosette from the cruel innkeepers Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, raising her as his own and giving her the chance of a better life.
Years later, as Paris stands on the brink of revolution, the grown Cosette falls in love with the passionate student Marius Pontmercy, whose ideals lead him to join his brave friend Enjolras and the other young revolutionaries at the barricades. Among them is the spirited street urchin Gavroche, whose courage and cheek capture the heart of the revolution. Meanwhile, Eponine, the Thénardiers’ daughter, secretly yearns for Marius, her unrequited love adding to the tragedy of a city in turmoil.
As the lives of these characters intertwine amid conflict, sacrifice and hope, Valjean’s unwavering courage and compassion shine through, even in the face of great loss.
Featuring the unforgettable songs I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home, and Do You Hear the People Sing? this powerful production showcases the extraordinary talent and spirit of our senior students in a timeless story that reminds us that love, forgiveness and the human heart can triumph against all odds.

Hi, my name is Henry and this is my fifth AKS school musical. From Oliver! to Les Mis every show has been the experience of a lifetime and I have loved every moment of it. I am currently in Year 11 studying Drama, Geography and PE. I take part in the first XV rugby team and captain my year group. I have played Oliver in Oliver!, Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors and Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd, and now I will be taking on the very challenging but exciting role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables. Over the last months we have worked tirelessly to put this incredible showstopper on stage, so we hope you enjoy every moment, because we have enjoyed making it. Many thanks to the cast and crew for making this show what it is today. Sit back and enjoy.
Hello, my name is Johnnie and I’m in Year 11. During my time at AKS, I’ve been in 4 musicals including Oliver!, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, Sweeney Todd, and now Les Misérables playing the role of Inspector Javert. I’m really excited to be bringing this iconic role to life and being able to play this role means the world. His character is so complex which makes it even funnier to play. I’m very grateful to the Performing Arts Department for all their support and bringing this magnificent show to life. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, I’m Lila and I’m currently in Year 11. I am so excited to be playing the role of Fantine in Les Misérables School Edition. Fantine is such a powerful and emotional character and getting to bring her story to life on stage is truly a dream for me. This is my fifth musical since joining AKS, having previously performed in Oliver!, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, and Sweeney Todd. Musical theatre has always been a huge passion of mine and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of the production each year, they are always a highlight of the school year for me. I am very grateful to the Performing Arts Department for all their support and hard work in bringing this fantastic show to life. Good luck to all the cast, you will all be brilliant! I hope you enjoy the show!
Hi! My name is Jen and I’m currently in Year 13 studying Drama, Sociology and English Literature. Since joining last year, being a part of the musical Sweeney Todd was the highlight of my year. So, when Les Misérables School Edition was announced, I knew I had to be involved! I have always been an actor first and I have never had the chance to sing on my own in front of an audience before. Getting the chance to play Eponine has allowed me to break out from my usual ‘type-cast’ as a deranged or crazy person like ‘Matron Fogg’. I’m so excited to bring Eponine to the stage and show you what a brave character she is; she has a place in my heart. I would recommend grabbing some tissues for this one, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Enjoy the show!

Hello, my name is Finlay Law and I am in Year 11. I am very excited to take on the role of Marius in this year’s production of Les Mis. I have been in the musical every year since Year 7. The ‘drama family’ at AKS is so supportive, and the musical is something I look forward to every year. Last year I performed in the principal role of Judge Turpin which has made me even more excited to perform in a much different role this year. I am so grateful to be given this opportunity and I look forward to bringing this show up to the extremely high standards that we set every year. I can’t wait to see all our hard work pay off on the stage. I hope you enjoy the show!
Marius and Cosette
Hi, I’m Maisie and I’m in my first year of Sixth Form. I am beyond excited and grateful to be playing Cosette in our version of Les Misérables School Edition and it’s truly an honour to be given this opportunity. Cosette is a character who embodies hope and love, yearning for a chance to walk outside of her father’s shadow and live her own life. This is my second musical at AKS and my first principal role so I am extremely eager to use this as a chance to build my confidence and become a better performer. I hope you enjoy the show and it’s all you dreamed it would be!

I’m Jacob, and I’m in my last year at AKS. I’m excited to take on the role of Thénardier as I’ve loved music and drama from a young age. I’ve been in every musical I can be for AKS, that being: Oliver!, The Addams Family, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors and Sweeney Todd and now, finally, Les Misérables. I love performing in the musical each year as it allows me to connect with friends and make many glorious memories. I can’t be prouder of the whole cast working as hard to bring this musical to the same standard as previous ones. I would like to send a massive thank you to the staff for making this opportunity possible. I hope you enjoy it!

I’m so excited to be playing Madame Thénardier in this year’s production of Les Misérables. I’m in Year 11 and this is my fifth school musical since I started doing them back in Year 7 but it’s my first principal role, which makes it extra special. I’ve loved musical theatre ever since I was a kid and have always been drawn to performing and storytelling. Being part of the school musical each year has been such an amazing experience and getting to bring such a big, bold character like Madame Thénardier to life has been so much fun. I’ve really enjoyed exploring her over-the-top personality and finding the comedy in her chaos. I’ve had the best time working on this show and hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve loved performing it!

Hello, my name is Jacob. I’m in Year 9 and I only joined AKS this year. I’ve performed twice before in my old school as Aladdin in Aladdin and as young Simba in The Lion King. I love performing and musical theatre as it allows me to step out of my comfort zone and express myself. Across the rehearsal process I’ve made so many good memories and great friends along the way. I’m extremely grateful to the Performing Arts Department for bringing me such an amazing opportunity and incredibly excited to show everyone what we’ve all been working so hard on. Thank you all for coming and enjoy the show!

Hi, I’m Elena and I am in Year 8. I’m so excited to be involved in my second AKS musical, as Les Mis is one of my favourite musicals. Last year in Sweeney Todd, I played the role of Tobias Ragg, a cheeky young boy who Mrs Lovett takes a shine to. This year, I am elated to be sharing the roles of Gavroche and Young Eponine with Tilly. I am very grateful to have received a principal role this year and to be a part of this amazing show. MARTHA WORTHINGTON PRODUCER AND DIRECTOR
As a child, I was never particularly drawn to Les Misérables. In fact, when I was a student at Arnold School, I would proudly tell my peers, teachers and even my matron that I couldn’t stand the show. I longed instead to perform in more upbeat musicals like Hairspray and Mamma Mia! Productions bursting with colour, comedy and energy. Something that perhaps seems out of character now given my history of dark and brooding musicals directed here at AKS!
Even when the 2012 film adaptation starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway came out, I didn’t waver. My feelings towards Les Mis remained unchanged: admiration from afar but never affection.
That all changed last year. I had the chance to perform the Les Misérables medley as part of the Performing Arts Cabaret and something within me shifted. Singing as part of the ensemble and delivering the powerful lyrics of Herbert Kretzmer, I suddenly understood what Les Misérables truly is. It’s not just a musical; it’s a movement. It’s about unity, resilience and the unstoppable force of the human spirit. For the first time, I felt part of something bigger than myself, something bigger than theatre itself.
From that moment, I was hooked. And it quickly became clear that I wasn’t alone. Parents, students and audiences everywhere have such deep affection for this musical.
When our Performing Arts Department first discussed the possibility of staging Les Misérables, we all agreed on its beauty, its emotional depth and the incredible opportunities it offers to every performer. But we also knew one thing for certain, this show is no small feat.
This is because Les Misérables asks for everything: vocally, dramatically, emotionally and technically. The music is vast and demanding, the storytelling relentless and the emotion unflinching. It’s a production that tests the strength, focus and commitment of everyone involved, from the smallest ensemble role to the leads, from the tech team to the orchestra. It’s a challenge in every sense of the word. However, as a department, we have never been one to shy away from a challenge. In fact, we thrive on them. We believe in our students’ ability to meet those challenges head-on, to rise, to persevere and to create something remarkable. Time and again, our students prove that they are capable of achieving work that would challenge even the most experienced of performers.
And that, at its heart, is what Les Misérables is all about. This musical reminds us that even in the darkest moments, people can rise together with courage, conviction and hope. That same belief drives everything we do in the Performing Arts Department: a belief that our students can achieve the extraordinary when given the opportunity, support and trust to do so.
The rehearsal process for this production has been nothing short of inspiring.
Each student has truly given their all, approaching every scene with enthusiasm, professionalism and heart. It’s that shared commitment which has bonded performers from Year 7 through to Year 13, strengthening what our students affectionately call our ‘drama family.’ This production has once again shown how powerful that community can be. Their energy and creativity have been electric. Our students’ willingness to explore, experiment and play has kept the process alive, joyful and full of discovery. Their drive to achieve excellence, matched with their openness to take risks, has shaped a performance that is honest, detailed and deeply moving.
The ensemble, in particular, deserves special recognition. Their ability to multirole, from street workers to revolutionaries, from paupers to the Parisian elite is remarkable. Every moment they spend on stage adds texture and truth to the world we’ve created.
Our principal cast have truly excelled. Their dedication, stamina and emotional intelligence have lifted this production to another level. Each of them has approached their role with care and courage, finding vulnerability, strength and humanity in their characters. Watching them grow into these roles has been one of the greatest privileges of this process.
And, of course, none of this would be possible without our phenomenal behindthe-scenes team. These students have worked tirelessly to bring our creative visions to life through prop-making, costume ageing and hair and make-up support. Additionally, they have worked backstage to ensure every transition, cue and scene change runs seamlessly. Their commitment, precision and professionalism are truly outstanding and comparable to that of seasoned stagehands.
A special thank you must also go to our incredible music team: Chris Hodder, Adam Brown, Ed Rugman and David Hewitt, whose expertise, patience and passion have elevated every note of this production. To Emily Hobbs - whose calm, dedication and commitment have been a constant source of strength and reassurance throughout this process - thank you. Our students are incredibly fortunate to work alongside such talented and generous professionals who lead by example and nurture their love for the arts every single day.
Directing this show has been an absolute pleasure. Watching our young performers take ownership of this masterpiece, pouring their hearts into every lyric, every glance, every note, it’s been nothing short of extraordinary.
Tonight, as the barricade rises and the first chords echo through the theatre, I hope you feel what we’ve felt throughout this journey: the passion, the pride and the power of a story that continues to move hearts across generations. Because Les Misérables is more than a musical, it’s a reminder of the strength of the human spirit. And tonight, that spirit belongs to our students.
CHRIS HODDER
MUSICAL DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR
This production of Les Misérables marks an exciting first for me as I step onto the podium to conduct the orchestra for an AKS musical. My journey with theatre began when I was just 15, playing in my first pit band – a formative experience that sparked a lifelong passion for musical theatre.
For the past 15 years, I’ve been proud to be part of the AKS family, playing in the band for every school musical. In recent years, my role has grown beyond the orchestra pit, working closely with the creative team during rehearsals to help shape the musical direction of each show. Since taking on the role of Music Coordinator in September, it feels only fitting that I now lead the orchestra for this iconic production.
The music of Les Misérables is renowned for its complexity and beauty – sweeping melodies, intricate harmonies and emotional depth that demand precision and passion from every performer. Bringing this score to life is no small task, and I’m honoured to guide such a talented group of students and musicians through its challenges.
I want to acknowledge the incredible work of the Performing Arts Department and the dedication of all the staff and students who make productions like this possible. Collaborating with such a creative and committed team is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. For me, these shows are more than performances - they are the result of a true family effort, where everyone plays their part in creating something unforgettable.
After countless hours of rehearsals and preparation, I’m truly looking forward to seeing all that hard work come together on stage and sharing this extraordinary experience with our audience.
ED RUGMAN CO-MUSICAL DIRECTOR
AND CONDUCTOR
Being part of this production has been an absolute joy - and occasionally a test of memory, particularly when trying to keep track of what feels like thirty principal roles, most with names I’m convinced are being pronounced differently every rehearsal. Add to that the mysterious logistics of the chain-gang ensemble and I’m fairly sure someone, somewhere is still rehearsing Act I in a corridor no one knew existed. My background includes classical training at the Royal Northern College of Music, cathedral posts, touring and recording work, and a varied portfolio of musical theatre and live performance projects across the UK and internationally. After years working in professional theatre and production, returning to an environment where young people approach music and performance with such energy, ambition and fearlessness has been an absolute privilege.
Working alongside such committed and talented performers (and a pit band deserving their own fanfare) has been a highlight of my time at AKS. Watching students grow in confidence, skill and expressive storytelling - sometimes quietly, sometimes spectacularly - has been deeply rewarding.
I hope tonight’s performance leaves you moved, inspired and reminded of the remarkable things young people can achieve when given the space to create boldly and work together. And in true Les Mis spirit, much like the barricade - built from many different parts to become something strong and unforgettablethis cast has come together to create something far greater than the sum of its pieces.
ADAM BROWN MUSICAL DIRECTOR
As a music teacher at AKS for the past seven years, I have had the privilege of working closely with both principal performers and ensemble members, guiding them through rehearsals and supporting the development of their vocal technique and dramatic interpretation. Witnessing their growth in confidence and artistry throughout this process has been immensely rewarding. The most gratifying part of my role is helping students fulfil the potential we first glimpse at auditions: watching the journey from nervous first sing-throughs to the polished, professional performances that grace opening night is a true joy.
Over the years, I have conducted many memorable productions, sharing countless fun moments in the orchestra pit with exceptional musicians. Yet, the most unforgettable part of any show remains the moment of anticipation. The charged silence just before the band begins to play. For this production of Les Misérables, I am delighted to return to the pit and perform on the horn, revisiting a skill I have missed after several years of conducting. The beautiful orchestrations by Claude-Michel Schönberg have long been on my bucket list and it is a privilege to bring them to life alongside such a talented cast and crew.
As the curtain rises, I want to wish the entire cast and crew the best of luck and to enjoy being a part of this incredible show.
DAVE HEWITT
MUSICAL DIRECTOR
It has been an absolute pleasure and a delight to have been involved with this year’s musical. Having been involved in AKS productions a number of years ago during my first tenure as a music teacher, I was aware of the very high standard and level of commitment from everyone involved in creating such amazing and memorable productions. Now, some years later and in my first year of my second innings at AKS, I can truly see why our productions are held in such high regard throughout the musical theatre community.
Les Misérables is not only hugely iconic as a musical masterpiece but an epic undertaking for any company to attempt. However, from the very first day of auditions and throughout the rigorous and lengthy rehearsals, it was clear to see how absolutely blessed we are to be able to work with such talented, dedicated and enthusiastic young people who all share the same ideal of producing excellence. In addition, the steadfast devotion and creative genius of the Performing Arts staff have been inspiring and being able to work alongside them has been a career highlight.
As a pianist, accompanying ensemble rehearsals has given me a unique insight into how the cast have developed to be able to grasp complicated harmonies, musical phrases and large-scale songs, adding colour and personality to their performances that would not be out of place on a professional stage.
Personally, away from the coaching role, I am delighted to be back performing as a member of the pit band alongside many fiercely gifted musicians and experience the production from another perspective.
I am absolutely sure that everyone who experiences the AKS production of Les Misérables will do so with as much pleasure, emotion and pride as I have.
EMILY HOBBS
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR AND COSTUME AND WARDROBE
I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the creative team for this production of Les Misérables School Edition. Joining the Performing Arts
Department at AKS this year has been such a privilege; having the opportunity to direct alongside Martha, as well as step into the role of Costume and Wardrobe has been truly wonderful.
What an incredible cast we have! The students involved in this production are fabulously creative and talented. The time, energy and commitment they have poured into every rehearsal is remarkable and they should be immensely proud of what they have achieved. I have laughed, I’ve been blown away and nearly brought to tears in the rehearsal room and that really shows what a dynamic and skilled cast we have. There have been so many highlights throughout this process. Seeing the cast bring ‘Master of the House’ to life was definitely one of them, it’s such a fun song and it really was a moment where the whole cast came together and acted as a true ensemble. Our trip to London to see the 40th Anniversary cast of Les Misérables was such a valuable experience; it was then wonderful to see how it deepened the students’ understanding of their characters and see them demonstrate that insight in the rehearsal room.
Although I am new to the AKS team, I have loved becoming so involved in this school community; I am incredibly proud to be part of such an outstanding production. Huge congratulations to all the students and whole creative team for their dedication and passion for this show. Les Misérables is a story of resilience, compassion and hope; seeing the students embody characters and portray these messages so clearly and honestly has been truly inspiring. I can’t wait to see where their creativity and confidence take them next, both on and off the stage.

The biggest thank you possibly goes to the Drama and Music teachers who selflessly give up their own time to put this musical together and without whom our children would not be given this amazing opportunity to perform at the Lowther Pavilion in front of such an appreciative audience.
Huge thanks also to our sponsor The Skin Clinic at Fylde Private Medical for their generous support of the musical, to our advertisers and to the Performing Arts patrons James and Claire Romer and Paul and Anne Beverley whose support is hugely appreciated.
FINALLY, SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE AND
