The city is growing rapidly and will be trans formed visually by major construction projects in both private and public sectors before its centen nial.

Some 20 new businesses opened in June 2022 alone, indicating a strong demand for Food, Goods and Services as the city’s population edges closer to 50,000.

Oakland Park surges forward

Four of the projects currently underway will add hundreds of residential units, and the city itself is investing more than $27.4 million in infrastructure this year, including $17.5 million for facilities, $8.3 million for streetscape and mobility projects, and more than $500,000 for stormwater improve ments.

With its 100 year anniversary just ahead in 2029, the city of Oakland Park, Florida is preparing for more than just an exciting celebration.

The city will soon break ground on the Sky Building, a mixed-use development (see photo, top right) on the west side of Dixie Highway that will include a new City Hall. Oakland Park is the preferred location for a stop between Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach on the Broward Commuter line. Darleen Mitchell, who worked as Oakland Park’s city clerk for 30 years, was the first resident born in the town of Florinada in 1926. Mitchell’s family was among the original settlers in the area and owned the entire block of Northeast 34th Court and Dixie High way. She died in 2016 shortly after her 90th birthday.

4Pioneer House and Museum, located at 3876 NE Sixth Avenue, was built by Dewey Hawkins, the first mayor of Oakland Park, in the early 1930s. It later served as home to other city leaders, including a later mayor and Fire Chief Ed Bailey. The city took posses sion of the house in 1977 and with help from the historical commission, city commission, and a $6,000 grant from the Florida Bicentennial Commission, necessary renovations were done, and the house was moved. By December 1977, the house was completed and furnished with period pieces, including a 1901 treadle sewing machine, old glass butter churns, a wooden icebox, and a water pump in the kitchen.

4Oakland Park was originally known as the city of Florinada. The town was forced into bankruptcy after the hurricane of 1926. Four years later, it was reincor porated as the city of Oakland Park thanks to the massive oaks in the area.

The public library was off icially named after Ethel M. Gordon by a vote of the city commission on Octo ber 16, 2013 In 1951, Gordon donated her personal book collection to the city and housed it in the Oak land Park’s Women’s Clubhouse She later won a seat on the city commission after successfully campaign ing on the promise to create a municipal library The library off icially opened February 10, 1958.
