AISD agrees to purchase land adjacent to Bowie by Ann Fowler OAK HILL - On March 27, the board of trustees for the Austin Independent School District (AISD) unanimously agreed to purchase two tracts of land near Bowie High School so the chronically over-crowded school can expand. A third tract of land was unanimously approved for a new high school in southeast Austin. AISD

officials said an exhaustive search to find property suitable for a high school in southwest Austin produced no viable sites. Nearly 13 acres (12.9) at 4010 Sawmill Road, costing $1.25 million, is adjacent to Bowie’s southern property line. Nearly 40 acres (39.8) at 4301 West Slaughter Lane, costing $2.5 million, is adjacent to Bowie’s western

property line. The added acreage will allow expansion and improvements to Bowie through either construction or for use as impervious cover. A new high school in southeast Austin can be built on a 64.9-acre tract in the Goodnight Ranch Subdivision. The cost is just over $13 million. All three tracts are being pur-

chased with funds from a 2008 bond program earmarked for land purchase for a new high school in south Austin. Bowie High School is located on 60 acres on Slaughter Lane. Current enrollment is about 2,913—118 percent over its capacity of 2,463. Theresa Bastian, president of the Bowie High School PTSA, told the Gazette, “I think the district’s

decision to purchase land to allow an expansion of Bowie High School is terrific. The enrollment projections show that Bowie’s attendance will be leveling off, while growth in southeast Austin is expected to continue at a rapid pace for years. As a southwest Austin resident, I am glad to see the district has taken the pragmatic approach to pave the way for significant upgrades and renovations to the Bowie campus. These will be more cost effective and benefit our students much sooner than a new high school would.” Gazette: Ann Fowler

political humor

Literature Lovers, Rejoice. Sir Archie Ferndoodle Rides Again. by Roger White Fellow time/space voyagers and other occasional devotees of “This Old Blouse,” I am more tickled than a coffee can full of dung beetles to announce the return of my dear friend, back-porch expectorational master, and legendary raconteur of the obsequious and purulent, Sir Archie Ferndoodle (applause, applause, applause). As I’m sure you remember, the esteemed Dr. Ferndoodle holds an associate’s degree in postmodern comparative limerick studies from the University of Southern Panama’s Correspondence College and has been featured five times in the American Anthology of Poetry. Just a few of his classics include “Oh, Staff Sergeant, My Staff Sergeant!,” “Why Is the Man Always from Nantucket?,” and possibly his greatest epic, “The Squirrels Stopped Talking to Me Today.” Sir Archie has a rare treat for us in this installment. In his inimitable style, the Fernman has taken several classic tunes from the songbook of popular culture and rendered them as his own, with updated, shall we say, acerbic lyrics so pertinent to today’s manic milieu. Or something. Disclaimer: The Spouseman—and the newspaper/periodical/bathroom wall compendium in which this diatribe appears—doesn’t necessarily agree with the views and opinions of Sir Archie. He is his own woman, and we bear no responsibility or legal burden for his espousings. So there. With this heartfelt caveat (and sincere attempt to head off legal action), I give you Archie’s first offering, called “Ivanka in the White House”: 3/1/17 1:21 PM

Ivanka in the White House (to the tune of “Drive My Car” by The Beatles)

(verse 1) “I asked my girl where she wanted to be, In New York City or in D.C., She said Daddy, I wanna be near you, In the White House with Jared the Jew.” (chorus) “Ivanka, you can have the West Wing, We’ll set you up with all of your bling, You can sell your furs and your rings, And Dad will tweet for you.”

Yeah, I ran for president, I told Donald to get bent, but that’s all past now.” (chorus) “I’m Rick Perry, woah, woah, woah, I’m Rick Perry, Those rumors are false, ’cause I’m no fairy, And I’m towin’ the Trump line.”

(verse 2) “Well, I’m not sure what I do, Roger White But I think I make the rules on nukular weapons, But this can’t be as hard (verse 2) As Dancing with the Stars, man, I “Barron’s got a floor to himself, was steppin’,” With a team of counselors for his mental health, (chorus) But Melania and I aren’t sharin’ a bed, “I’m Rick Perry, woah, woah, woah, So you could move in with me in- I’m Rick Perry, stead.” Renewable power’s our adversary, Let’s build that pipeline.” (chorus) “Ivanka, you can have the West And last, and surely least, Ferndude Wing, gives us “Lysergic Wood,” which Or you-know-where, I won’t say he says is his ode to psychedelic a thing, substances: Damn, it’s so good to be the king, And Putin, I owe you.” Lysergic Wood, An Ode to LSD (to the tune of The Beatles’ “Norwe“Tweet, tweet n tweet, tweet, yeah!” gian Wood”) Um, ok. For his second favoring, the Fernman has rendered this ditty entitled “Perry in Charge”: Perry in Charge (to the tune of Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady”) (verse 1) “Well, I’m the Energy Top Dude, And now solar power’s screwed ’cause oil’s my cash cow,

(verse 1) “I once ate a squirrel, Or should I say the squirrel ate me, He showed me his brain, We baked it into a nice quiche lorraine.” (chorus) “We smoked purple crayons, As the walls melted into the sea,

Meet your neighbor people profiles Local songwriter Wayne Gathright launches album by Ann Fowler This week long-time Scenic Brook resident Wayne Gathright released his debut album, Poparockzi, featuring both pop and rock, some reminiscent of whimsical Beatles songs. This Victoria native was forced to take guitar lessons as a teen, Gathright rebelled and quit within a month – as teenagers will when given no choice. But while he hated the lessons, he was drawn to music, and that year taught himself to play the guitar. “Ironically, a few years later, I became a guitar teacher at the place that I hated,” Gathright said with a laugh. Piano and ukulele have been added to his repertoire; in fact he plays his daughter’s toy ukulele on some of the tracks. Gathright has been part of the Austin music industry for more than 20 years, having owned the Music Lane Recording Studio and served on the Austin Music Commission. Like many musicians, Gathright has a day job that pays the bills – in his case he wrote a software program he has sold to realtors. That allows him to work out of his house, where he has a small music studio. He wrote, played, recorded and produced all the songs on Poparo-

Teacher of the Year

Meet your neighbor Continued from p. 6 providing positive messages although he has fun at celebrities’ expense as well. Some have the folksy quality of Peter, Paul & Mary with a variety of musical stylings, which is not surprising given he is a Beatles fan, played in a jazz band in college and later toured in a country band. The album includes award-winning songs from the 2016 Austin Songwriting Competition, and includes the Publishers Pick at the 2014 Texas Music Symposium for “Pass Around the Bomb,” an allegory about a dangerous children’s game.

Marco Bazan, Bowie Teacher of the Year

The songs are varied in theme. “Celebrity” pokes fun at talentless media hogs, while “The Last Song” is a sweetly melancholy tale about life after death. “Evolution of Revolution” discourages embracing the status quo. Gathright is looking forward to playing more music locally. He has formed a band, Waylyn James, with two friends – the name a combination their first names: Wayne, Lynn and James. For more information on Gathright or the album, see www. facebook.com/WayneGathrightMusic or www.ReverbNation. com/WayneGathright.

by Susan Leos, Bowie High School Interim Principal

I first came to Bowie in the dead heat of a Texas summer, July 2009, as James Bowie High School’s Instructional Administrator, and for one month encountered only our principal, the principal’s secretary, our custodians, and … one friendly, astute, unassuming, and intensely dark-eyed young man who scurried in and out of the office all that month, a young man I came to know as Bazan, theatre teacher extraordinaire – setting up drama camp for elementary students, gathering scripts for the upcoming year, and already working for students he hadn’t met yet. Mr. Marco Bazan, whom

we fondly call the “True Energizer Bunny” totally exemplifies what it means to be a devoted, dedicated theatre educator. Marco graduated from UT in 1998 with a Bachelor of Journalism degree and a double minor in Theatre Performance and Literature. He taught at Donna High School in the Rio Grande Valley before coming to Bowie in 2004. Marco brings intensity, passion, artistry, and an uncanny sense of

organization to everything he does at Bowie. From teaching a veritable medley of classes: Theatre Arts at every level I to IV, Technical Theatre at every level, Theatre Production (an after-school class), Oral Interpretation, Musical Theatre, to directing and supporting all of our various theatre events ongoing throughout the school year, Marco is, quite simply, a marvel. On top of these enormous jobs, he also serves as our UIL Director, organizing all the components including finding sponsors/teachers for all the academic events as well as the more artistic events, setting up the away tournaments, hosting Continued on page 15

Danielle Serna

by Patrick Olson As the primary starting pitcher for the Austin High softball team, Danielle Serna has helped guide the Maroons into first place with an undefeated district campaign. In an 8-1 triumph over Crockett Tuesday night, she tossed a three-hitter and smashed a home run for the final tally of the contest. On Friday, she will lead the Maroons into battle against McCallum at Noack Field #4 with first pitch set to be thrown at 7 p.m. A native of Austin, Danielle attended Travis Heights Elementary before progressing to Small Middle School where she also played volleyball and basketball. Austin High soccer advances, Bowie out by Patrick Olson The Austin High boys and girls soccer teams both won first round Class 5A playoff encounters, while the Bowie teams suffered setbacks in the first round of the Class 6A postseason. The Maroons boys club prevailed over Lockhart 3-2 while

the girls team shut out Medina Valley 2-0. A talented Pflugerville team blanked the Bowie boys 4-0 and Westwood shut down the Lady Dawgs 5-1. After earning a trip to the playoffs for the first time since 2003, the Maroons fell behind Lockhart 1-0.

Merek Byckovski won possession of the ball near midfield around the 25th minute and passed through traffic to freshman Ronaldo Garcia who was taken down by the Lions goalie. A subsequent red card for the violent play then forced Lockhart to Continued on page 14

by Patrick Olson Although having only recently completed his junior season on the Crockett boys soccer team, Javier Jaimes is already anxious to begin the 2018 campaign. “We’ll win the district championship,” he confidently stated. “We’re gonna work hard and put in a lot of time in the weight room to get bigger, stronger and faster.” Jaimes points to sophomores Jose Sierra, Carlos Castro and goalie Axel Elias as important contributors next year. Student Athlete Spotlight Danielle Serna Continued from p. 12 basketball team that nearly earned a trip to the state tournament. After missing only two district games, she joined the softball club and immediately contributed to the success of the team. “Basketball is faster paced,” she acknowledged. “Softball is not as much running around.” Danielle’s older brother Pauly played varsity basketball at Austin High and her older sister Alyssa competed on both the Maroons basketball and softball teams. Her younger sister Karina plays softball and Danielle is looking forward to her arriving at Austin High. Danielle has important advice for younger pupils like her sister. “Academically, stay ahead,” she emphasized. “Athletically, keep your head up and look at the next play.” Serna’s favorite teacher at Austin High is Mrs. Nunez. “She teaches AVID (a college prep course) and she’s always there for me,” the starting pitcher noted. Following graduation in 2019, Danielle wants to continue

to play softball in college and presently she enjoys watching college teams Texas, Auburn and Florida. Softball head coach Kristen Lozano has been a positive influence for Danielle. “She’s there when I am down on myself,” Serna confided. “She knows how to pick me up.”

competing in the mile run. Upon arriving at Crockett, Javier competed on the junior varsity soccer team as a freshman and earned a spot on the varsity contingent as a sophomore. During the fall, he plays for the club team Dynamo with Bowie player Tony Pedrozo and Avery Kells from Austin High, traveling to tournaments in North Carolina, Houston and Dallas. Mathematics instructor Mrs. Thomas is Javier’s favorite teacher at Crockett. “She helps you out a lot,” the attacking midfielder said. “When something is complicated, she makes it easier.” The eldest of four children born to Rufino and

Elvira Jaimes, Javier offers important advice to younger pupils like his three sisters. “Work hard and don’t be intimidated by anyone,” he said. Javier’s best individual game came in a 4-3 lost to Reagan when he scored a goal and had a pair of assists. He lists the best game the Crockett team experienced overall as a 2-1 victory over McCallum where Sierra and Castro both scored. Crockett head coach Alex Olivares has been a positive influence for Javier. “He tells me to be on top of my grades,” Jaimes added.

The Maroons boys prevailed over Lockhart 3-2 while the girls team shut out Medina Valley 2-0. Story p. 12.

compete the remainder of the contest with only ten players. Garcia’s goal later in the first half tied the game 1-1 before intermission. During the second half, the Maroons played with more space on the perimeter and Case Danzeiser attacked persistently on the left flank. A crossing pass near the center of the goal by Denzeiser was headed in by Gustavo Garcia for the second Austin High tally. Garcia then took on the Lions goalie one on one and passed to Wenes Garcia who completed the scoring play to move the home team in front 3-1. A successful penalty kick by Lockhart made it 3-2, but Austin High coach Jesus Arreola implemented defensive adjustments to secure the victory. The Austin High girls team ventured south to take on Medina Valley—with a large crowd of fans in orange apparel; but the Lady Maroons

refused to be intimidated. A mere eight minutes into the encounter, sophomore Gracie Jackson launched a strong shot into the Panther goalie. Following a rebound off the keeper, Hally Sasser blasted the ball into the net for the first Austin High score. Around twenty minutes into the second half, sophomore Sarah Jane Moe threw in to midfielder Ella Rosi, who quickly passed back to Moe. A kick from 40 yards out by Moe sailed over the goaltender’s head and into the net for another tally by the visitors. Stingy defense by Jasper Cohn, Emma Hagert, Riley Moore, Maddie Heal, Rosi and Moe limited the Panthers to only six shots the entire game. Goalie Emily Ennis earned a shut out. The Maroons boys team faces San Antonio Memorial Friday in Seguin beginning at 7 p.m. The Lady Maroons take on Richmond Foster on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Bryan High School.

Gazette: Sarah Weeks

During the second half, the Maroons played with more space on the perimeter and Case Danzeiser attacked persistently on the left flank.

The Bowie boys soccer club visited Pflugerville on an extremely windy Thursday night. A brisk breeze immediately helped the home team as the Panthers smashed a line drive penalty kick directly into the Bulldogs backline, but the Bowie defense headed it out safely. Six minutes into the contest, Pflugerville scored the first goal of the game. Bowie’s trifecta of Tony Pedrozo, Logan Kilbane and Emanuel Nunez passed the ball well near the Panthers penalty box, but the home team scored again following a corner kick. The Panthers added two additional goals in the second half and will now face Aldine Eisenhower in the second round. “I am very proud of my team for the work and growth they put in this season,” Bowie coach Ryan Logan said. “I am also expecting more success from the program in the future.” “It was a fun season with a fun team,” Bowie girls coach Carrie Hoffman-Howell said. “This year’s team had a lot of positive girls that had a lot of talent. We had twelve fabulous seniors that led the team to many victories.” Following a tightly contested scoreless first half, Westwood put the ball in the net on a corner kick in the first minute of the second half. Down 2-0, Morgan Johnson scored the lone Bowie goal. The Lady Warriors advance to take on Klein.

Teacher of the Year

AISD winners

Marco Bazan, Bowie Teacher of the Year Continued from p. 10

our own large-scale competitions here at Bowie, chaperoning students when they travel to local, state, and national UIL events, and teaches our highly successful forensics teams. Besides all of his commitments to Bowie and to our students, he also finds time to act in local productions in the Austin area, and, true to form, he receives accolades for his performances. And, I am quite serious about this gifted, artistic teacher who also takes care of all the details: finalizing last-minute costumes, remembering the power tools, and taking care of the grunt work. Truly, the man is never even on our office “naughty” lists, like “teachers who don’t post grades on time” or “teachers who forget to take attendance”! Marco Bazan truly does it all with organization, style,

aplomb, and positivity. Whether Bazan is teaching a musical theatre class or directing an after-school rehearsal, his students are focused, participating, analyzing, giving and receiving feedback – Mr. Bazan’s classroom is a learning place, and students are using high-level critical thinking skills whether they are building a set, delving into characterization, studying a script, or creating their own dialogues or monologues. Plus, Marco is a constructivist; he believes in students creating meaning, exploring ideas or fashioning characters through their own work and learning. The students in his classroom also learn from each other and from a vast array of resources. He is not the only teacher in the room; his methods encourage students to teach and learn from each

other, not just from him, and he challenges our students with rigorous, controversial, meaningful literary works. Only the most dedicated, studied teachers bring that kind of conscious awareness to the craft of teaching and learning. Finally, Marco brings this large sense of positivity to our school. Though he is insanely busy, he always has a ready smile for all of us, and his students admire, respect, and like him. They work, stay after school until all hours, and, in production, the students are amazing because he has instilled in them this desire to communicate in a concrete way with the sets, designs, and costumes and in the most human way on the stage—through voice, gestures, movement, passion, and genuine human emotions. Teacher of the Year

City of Austin news

Bowie Teacher of the Year Cultural Arts Division announces Continued from p. 10

Ever heard the adage that only in the dictionary does the word “success” come before work? In Marco’s case, our students learn firsthand that the commitment and value of work, work perfected, practiced and done well, comes before success. Marco Bazan truly exemplifies the kind of theatre educator who teaches students that the rewards of theatre come as a result of time spent analyzing, learning, listening, reworking, and reaching for a higher level of human understanding. Because he believes in theatre and in our students, his work and their work together equal success, for them as individuals and for our Bowie community of theatre lovers. As an administrator who sees various methods and strategies of teaching, Mr. Bazan stands out as one who has truly chosen to devote his energy, his

time, and his life to teaching, and I mean truly teaching—getting down to the nitty-gritty and getting kids excited about the work of theatre. Too often theatre teachers tend to pontificate, to command their student audiences because it’s a natural transition from acting on the stage themselves to this sort of teaching. Not Bazan – he is in the midst of his learners, setting up lessons with practice, assessment, and feedback cycles so that the students can delve into the meat of theatre – learning to use focus, timing, contrast and mood in characters as well as more physical techniques like the importance of stage space, projection, and sound/silence in productions. Marco Bazan is truly a master teacher of all things theatre, and the Bowie High School community-at-large knows how fortunate we are.

Art After Six Lecture Series The City of Austin Cultural Arts Division, part of the Economic Development Department, announces a new iteration of the popular Art After Six lecture series. Developed in 2012 in conjunction with the City’s annual People’s Gallery exhibition, the program has historically featured presentations on the artwork of select People’s Gallery artists. In an expansion of the series, to better engage audiences and address topical issues pertinent to arts and culture, Art After Six will now explore specific themes via panel discussions with artists from the exhibition. The program will be held March – October on select Friday evenings at 6PM at Austin City Hall (201 West Second Street). The event is free and open to all, and parking will be validated for the City Hall garage.

The first, and very timely, program will investigate Art and Politics. Participating artists include Augustine Chavez, Starla Halfmann and Austin Sayre, in a discussion moderated by Suzanne Burton, Exhibition Coordinator for the People’s Gallery. The complete schedule for 2017 is as follows:

March 31 Art and Politics Augustine Chavez, Starla Halfmann, Austin Sayre A look at the role of art and artists in recording and navigating politics April 28, 2017 Photography Showdown: Digital vs Analog Greg Davis, Carol Hayman, Kirk Marsh

Exploring the pros and cons (and processes) of digital vs analog photography May 26, 2017 Painting as Process Hollyanna Melear, Chun Hui Pak, Stephanie Sandoval A look at the varied processes that painters employ to develop their work, from rituals or systems they use, to preparation of materials June 30, 2017 Symbolism Terri St. Arnauld & Frank Yezer, JoAnna Johnson, and John Seager Exploring why and how artists incorporate symbolism into their work and how viewers can navigate it Continued on back page

City offers free soil testing for home gardeners Austin gardeners will be able to find out what’s in their garden soil at the Soil Kitchen on April 8 and 9. Experts will be on hand to accept soil samples to be screened for heavy metals and tested for nutrients—an essential task to ensure the soil is safe and effective for growing food crops. “Urban soils can contain contamination, mostly from past use of leaded gasoline and lead-based paint. As a result, residents—especially pre-school age children—risk exposure to lead and other metals in the soil,” said Christine Whitney, program manager for Brownfields Revitalization Office. “As a service to the community, we are pleased to offer free soil testing at the Soil Kitchen. In the process, we help teach Austin’s urban gardeners how to grow food that’s safe to eat,” said

Whitney. The testing is confidential. A number is assigned to each soil sample and the gardener can look up the results online around mid-May. On Saturday, April 8, the Soil Kitchen will coincide with the free East Austin Garden Fair. The Fair includes a variety of enjoyable activities including building a rain barrel, keeping bees and raising backyard chickens. The Soil Kitchen is sponsored by Austin Brownfields Revitalization Office part of Austin Resource Recovery. To help educate Austinites about services available via the City’s Brownfields Revitalization Office, the Soil Kitchen event highlights the similarities between screening backyard garden soil and testing commercial land for possible

contaminants before future development. For more information about the Soil Kitchen and soil sampling, go

to www.austintexas.gov/soilkitchen. The Soil Kitchen will be open at Parque Zaragoza, 2608 Gonzales Street, from 9 am to 2 pm on Satur-

day April 8 and from 9 am to noon on Sunday April 9.

as a one-stop shop for anything people want to know about their police department,” she said. The app, introduced in 2016, allows users to submit a tip or check the latest crime maps, including traffic incidents. While calling 9-1-1 or 3-1-1 is still available, this app can be used instead, which could come in handy when cellular systems have trouble calling 9-1-1—as happened recently with AT&T. The user can also initiate a chat with a police officer, or the officer may initiate it based on a provided tip. “It’s a way for people to have a direct chat with on-duty cops 24-7,” said Chomout. She added, “If you don’t feel comfortable calling 9-1-1 or 3-1-1, it’s another tool for people to still make contact.” The app also gives alerts and provides APD news and a department directory. The Austin Police Department mobile app is available free for iPhone and Android.
