Senior Sunday/Youth Group Sunday was May, 8th. The senior class formally processed into the church. Afterward, Davi Lazard made the church family announcements. Natalie Leach rang the bell while Sandy Chen lit the candles. The OHA Praise Band played and sang three songs during the service. Their special selection was “Days of Elijah.” Nate Berhanu

gave the Invocation.

Reverend Turnmire and Tara Griffith presented the Children’s Sermon.

They talked about Mother’s Day and gave a gift to each mother in the congregation. Massa Fazzi shared the Mission Moment.

She talked about the community both in Liberia and Mouth of Wilson as well as making friends at OHA. Aaron Groves asked the congregation to ‘Share their Joys and Concerns’

and then incorporated these into his prayer.

Frankie Culhane led the congregation in each of the songs during the service.

Lexie Stoltzfus, Samantha Kibble, Bree Thompson, and Jennifer Brewer collected the offering. Kane Schrader read the scripture.

Jewel Ford Patton Triplex Dedication

By Alpha Diallo On Friday, May 6th, Dr. Groves led the dedication of the Jewell Ford Patton Triplex in memory of former president Dr. Patton’s mother. Dr. Groves welcomed members of Dr. Patton’s family as well as the Oak Hill Academy staff, students, and guests. He thanked those that invested in the project and recognized the architect and builder. The Rev. Dr. Turnmire led those assembled in a prayer. Dr. Patton, the president of Oak Hill Academy from 1986 to 2002, stepped to the podium and gave a short biography about his mother. Dr. Patton said, “I came to Oak Hill in the 1960s with my family and things were so different. My mother and other family members would visit campus each summer, and we made many great memories. We would hike and pick blackberries, and my mother would make the best cobbler you ever tasted.” Dr. Patton shared a great deal of his history with Oak Hill Academy. The Patton family representatives and Tyler Whiteman, a five-year student of Oak Hill, cut the ribbon dedicating the triplex. In closing, the gathering sang the Alma Mater.

Senior-Youth Sunday cont.

Tamsin Smith presented the sermon on temptation. She talked about how Jesus resisted the Devil’s temptation and how that relates to the lives of each person. Tamsin even shared some of her own temptations and the results of her decisions.

Tamsin said, “We will have temptations. We have to make tough decisions. Rely on your relationship with God for guidance.” After the sermon, Young’s Chapel gave each senior a card and small cross.

Brock Nelson closed the service with the Benediction.

Spring Formal—Masquerade

By Davi Lazard On Saturday, April 30, 2016, Oak Hill celebrated another awesome Spring Formal. There was much preparation done behind the scenes to make the event a success. Thank you to Virginia Parker, Alice Wang, Abby Blair, Anna Spencer, Sarah Smith, Tara Griffith, Tamsin Smith, Sarah Folorunso, Lexie Stoltzfus, Bello Razgallah, Bree Thompson, Davi Lazard, Kristina Kennedy, Josh DeLacerda, Mr. Julius, Ms. Tobin, Ms. Haas, Mr. Crede, Ms. Luksic, Mr. Stanton, Ms. Sargent, and Mr. Blevins for decorating. The Spring Formal dinner was amazing. Thanks to the Meriwether-Godsey staff for a delicious meal. After dinner, all of the seniors were recognized and given a souvenir, a beach towel with Oak Hill Academy Class of 2016 written on it. The Spring Formal Court

representatives were Alice Wang-underclassmen; Carritah Cai- 10th grade; Olivia Obeng-11th grade; Tamsin Smith, Hannah Bruck, Ming Ogden, and Kwande Bawa-12th grade. The Spring Formal King and Queen were Jason Shi and Sandy Chen.

Jason and Sandy explained, “We are so happy but really shy about being king and queen.” The Spring Formal was very elegant and everyone had a great time dancing the night away. After asking a few people their thoughts on the formal, they explained, “Ms. Sargent put in a lot of work to make sure we had a great time. We really enjoyed ourselves.”

Parents’ Days Career Fair

By Brad Tyree Oak Hill’s annual Career Fair was held in Turner Gymnasium.

Organized by Mrs. Groves and Mr. Hill, students’ parents came to talk about their jobs. During the event students were able to talk with the parents and ask questions about their careers.

Questions ranged from, “What is the hardest obstacle in your field?” to “What

type of degree would you need to get into your field of work?”

It was a great time for the students to start thinking not only about college, but their plans afterwards.

Parents’ Days Science Fair

By Mason Higgs The Oak Hill Academy 2016 Science Fair included bright ideas from the young minds of science and math students. Most projects astonished the judges, families, and fellow students. It was a great learning experience, not only for the students, but also for the parents and judges.

Although it was the first science fair, it set a high standard for those to come in the future.

The fair represented the hard work of students and showed how much they learned over the course of the year in varying subjects, such as physics, chemistry, and agriculture.

Proud parents were able to get a taste of what their children could build, prove, draw, burn, and grow. Mr. Landow, a physical science, chemistry, and math teacher, succeeded in organizing the science fair and bringing it to life.

Each group set out to answer a question or prove a hypothesis using the scientific method.

Walter Huang’s project explained what caused a ship to float or sink. Sam Fryling and Noah Thomas displayed which fruit was most powerful, what a fruit can power, and whether a fruit can power an iPod. Rodney Miller and Ty-Shon Alexander displayed how to cool down a drink. Anna Croom drew and

explained what made things stand out in a crowd. Bello Razgallah and LiWayne Richardson proved that copper was the best conductor.

Mutsukou Hiyoshi and Mark Fu answered the question, “Will a cup take in water?” Mason Higgs demonstrated the friction of different materials on a Gaussian rifle. Sam Mussen and Aidan Stenner tested how chemicals affected the freezing point of water. Brock Nelson and Frankie Culhane tested how soil affected plant growth. Bryan Wu and Jeremiah Brenner experimented on the effectiveness of water filtration techniques. Matthew Bryan and Nahum Belayhun’s question was, “How similar is human DNA to that of other DNA?” Gabby Mackey and Tsehaye Vener displayed how lens shapes affected how a laser bends.

Turner Morton and Carittah Cai tested different drinks to find out which had the most electrolytes.

Kane Schrader and Hope Bernier’s question was, “Which plant fertilizer made plants grow the tallest?” Amanda Crenshaw and Fawaz Ilupeju experimented on which cookies tasted better, overnight batter or batter cooked immediately. Olivia

Obeng showed which makeup grew the most bacteria. Lotam Leinzon Levy and Hannah Bruck displayed what colors everyday objects made when they burned. Chris Evans and Josh DeLacerda experimented on how much radioactivity a fruit gained after being microwaved. Sean Campbell studied the Mpemba Effect. He tested whether hot water cooled down faster than room temperature water.

Parents’ Days 10 Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse

By Morgan Rumsey Mr. Pease directed the annual play for Parents’ Days. This year’s play was a comedy told by two narrators and acted out by two sets of main characters. The production was a parody titled “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.”

The play included an epic zombie wrestling match and lots of laughter from the audience. The main characters were split into two groups of apocalypse survivors.

The first set of cast members were Christine Sears as Christy 1, Josh DeLacerda as Sam 1, Quinn Arrowood as Jimmy 1, and Morgan Rumsey as Susan 1. The second set of cast members were Tori Levine as Christy 2, Brendan

Cruz as Jimmy 2, Brad Tyree as Sam 2, and Amanda Crenshaw as Susan 2. Abby Blair and Matt Poppe were the narrators for the performance. Rodney Miller, Tara Griffith, Will Messer, Bello Razgallah, Steven Wang, and Brian Zhang were cast as the zombies.

Parents’ Days Stage Crew

By Josh Hatch The Stage Crew worked on building and painting sets and creating costumes and make-up for the actors. For the spring play production, the Stage Crew members worked as stagehands by moving props and sets to make sure the play ran smoothly.

They also helped with sound and lighting. Everyone worked very hard and gave lots of their free time to work on the play.

The Horse Show

Tyler Whiteman was the stage manager. Chris Sears helped with set and costume design. Jake Pensak ran the spotlight. Steven Wang, Sammy Surdu, and Ian McCrory worked on set design and as stagehands.

Samantha Kibble and Hannah Bruck were the make-up artists for the play.

Spirit Days—Field Day

By Josh Mar-Fan and Shawn Roache Oak Hill Academy’s annual Spirit Days proved successful once again. This year’s Field Day Events included many contests; however, a popular one was ‘Bean Bag Bocce.’ In this event, students attempted to throw a bean bag as close to the target as possible. Each grade had three throws with only their best throw counted.

Another popular event was the Bat Relay. During this event, there were six students on a team for each grade. Three of the students stood at one end of the gym while the others were at the opposite end. Each student spun six times in a circle with one end of the bat on the forehead and the other end on the ground.

They had to sprint to the other side of the gym where the next student would repeat the process.

To say the Sack Race was fun is an understatement.

There were six participants from each team with three on each side of the court. The main objective was for each participant to hop as fast as possible to the other side of the gym while in a sack. The first team that had all of its participants across the court won.

The Three-Legged Race was a real sight to see! In this event there were six participants for each team. Each team had three pairs of racers tied together at their ankles. The team to get all their racing pairs across the court the fastest won the event.

The seniors came in fourth place for the Three-Legged Race. The Sack Race, Tug-ofWar, and Bat Relay all saw twelfth graders finish in first place. For Bean Bag Bocce, the seniors tied for third place. For the Cheer and Alma Mater contests, the twelfth graders were loud and proud enough to earn first place.

The juniors came in first place in the Three-Legged Race.

They finished in second place in the Cheer competition and the singing of the Alma Mater as

well as tied for second place in the Bean Bag Bocce contest. For the Sack Race relay, Tug-of-War, and Bat Relay, they finished in third place.

Additionally, the sophomores finished first in Bean Bag Bocce, second in the Three-Legged Race, Tug-ofWar, and Sack Race. They also placed third in the Cheer and the Alma Mater competitions.

The eighth and ninth graders took third place in the ThreeLegged Race and the Bean Bag Bocce contest. They finished fourth in the Sack Relay Race, Tug-of-War, Bat Relay and Cheer and Alma Mater competitions.

Spring Sports Soccer

By Kwande Bawa The 2016 spring soccer team, coached by Mr. Gagne, included Alex Kulp, Walter Huang, Bushe Ramabu, Jeremiah Brenner, Matt Poppe, Shamar Henry, Bello Razgallah, Jonathan Harris, Michael Lovitz, Brendan Cruz, Aidan Hill, Alpha Diallo, Nate Berhanu (Goalkeeper), Ty-Shon Alexander, Mutsukou Hiyoshi, Shiryu Kataoka, Kwande Bawa, and Aaron Groves.

The first game was played on April 7th against Rural Retreat High School from Virginia.

Aaron Groves led the team as the high scorer in the game,

notching four goals. Kwande Bawa got a ‘hat-trick,’ scoring three goals. Bushe Ramabu also scored three goals. Lastly, Shamar Henry scored one goal to seal the victory. The Oak Hill soccer team won by a score of 11-0. Coach Gagne said, “I like the team that we have this season. They’re each beneficial, and all share leadership roles on the team.”

The second game was at home against the same team on April 19th. Starters included Aaron Groves, Kwande Bawa, Aidan Hill, Michael Lovitz, Bello Razgallah, Alex Kulp, Matt Poppe, Jonathan Harris, Brendan Cruz, and Nate Berhanu. Aaron kicked off the

game with a goal and added two more before the end of the match. Bushe Ramabu came off the bench and scored one goal, and Kwande Bawa got another hat-trick scoring three goals.

Alpha Diallo, Brendan Cruz, and Alex Kulp each scored one goal.

Aaron Groves, one of the captains of the team, stated, “Even though our spring season was short, I believe that we all had fun and played well.”

Track Team

By Sophia Miller Oak Hill Academy’s Track Team is coached by Mr. Riedl.

The four students on the track team were Josh DeLacerda, Liam Hill, Noah Thomas, and Anna Spencer. Josh and Anna threw Discus and Liam and Noah ran. The team competed at meets at Ashe County High

School and Holston High School.

Although Oak Hill did not win either meet, the students placed well. At the Ashe County meet, Anna placed 12th in Discus and 4th in Shot Put. Josh placed 14th in Discus. Noah placed 5th in the high jump.

Liam ran the 100 and placed 28th. Amber Deane ran the 400 and placed 9th. Noah also ran the 400 and placed 2nd. He also placed 4th in the 800.

Mr. Riedl ran track in middle and high school as well as in college. Track taught him a drive for fitness and running. It also taught him how to be committed, to work hard, and never let his team down. He met some of his best friends through track.

Boys’ Tennis

By Lexie Stoltzfus The boy’s tennis team was coached by Mr. Allen and Mr. Landow. Mr. Landow said, “Coach Allen, the rest of the guys and I were hoping for an undefeated season this year. At practice we start off with warmups and then split the time between drills and match practice. We also have challenge matches to determine seeding for games.”

Team members were Connor Cummings, Sam Mussen, Aidan Stenner, Bakh Pearl, Walter Huang, Mark Fu, Ming Ogden, Corey Shupe, Mutsukou Hiyoshi, and Shiryu Kataoka.

The team manager was Jake Pensak.

Oak Hill won their match at Alleghany High School 7-2.

Connor won 8-3, Sam won 8-5, Aidan won 8-2, Bakh won 8-3, Walter lost 1-8, and Mark won 8-5. In the doubles matches Aidan and Sam lost 6-8, Connor and Ming won 8-1, and Walter and Mark won 6-2.

The guys lost the match at Narrows 4-5. Connor won 8-4, Sam lost 2-8, Aidan won 8-2, Mark won 8-2, Bakh won 8-6, and Walter lost 6-8. In doubles,

Connor and Sam lost 5-8, Aidan and Mark lost 38, and Bakh and Corey lost 6-8.

At Ashe County, the team lost 1-8. Connor won 10-7, Sam lost 5-7, Aidan lost 2-6, Mark lost 1-6, and Bakh lost 4-6. In exhibition, Walter and Corey lost 4-6 and 3-6 respectively. In doubles, Connor and Sam lost 89, Aidan and Michael lost 5-8, and Bakh and Mark lost 1-8. In exhibition, Shiryu and Hiyoshi lost 1-8.

Ladies’ Tennis

By Abby Osho The 2016 girls’ tennis team was coached by Ms. Brooks. The team worked hard by practicing after dinner at least three or four days a week and occasionally on Sundays. “I've always enjoyed tennis,” said Ms. Brooks. “I've played tennis since I was 12 years old. I lettered four years in high school and then played two years at the college level.” The team played hard, but lost their

first match to Rural Retreat 0-9.

It was a tough game. The team played Rural Retreat for a second match at their courts.

During this meeting, the girls rallied to win some games but lost the match 0-9. The girls on

the team included Gabby Mackey, Sarah Smith, Tara Griffith, Chris Sears, Tsehaye Vener, Tamsin Smith, Massa Fazzi, and Sandy Chen.

Warrior Weekend #3—Friday

By Matt Coleman The 2015-2016 year was ending, why not enjoy it with a Warrior Weekend? Friday activities included dinner at Chipotle, watching Captain America, dinner at Qdoba and dessert at Sweet Frog, fishing at Noonkester, and a trip to CookOut and the Diavolo show at Virginia Tech.

Mrs. and Mrs. Finklea and Rev. Turnmire chauffeured a few boys and girls to eat at Qdoba and Sweet Frog in North Wilkesboro, NC. Connor

Caffrey said, “The burrito I had was pretty good.” Right next door happened to be Sweet Frog frozen yogurt. Umberto said, “It was so good, I had to get two cups.”

Mrs. Phipps and Mr. Allen took students to a Diavolo show at Virginia Tech. Hope Bernier said, “The show was very interesting and different. It was my first time being at a Diavolo show.” Afterwards, the group dined in at the famous Cook-Out and did not get back until 1 a.m.

Friday also included an oncampus trip to Noonkester for a chance to go fishing. Ty-shon Alexander was excited about this trip and said, “I love fishing.

You don’t know what you all are missing.”

Finally, there was the trip to see Captain America and have dinner in Boone, NC. Captain America brings all the superheroes together for war.

Jaiden Lindsey said, “The movie was great and interesting.” For dinner the group stopped at Chipotle. “Chipotle was great with exotic flavors and tastes,” said Mike Poteat. Additionally, he stated, “You have to get the vinaigrette dressing and a splash of guacamole.”

Overall, the first day of the last Warrior Weekend was a success.

Warrior Weekend #3 —Saturday

By Tamsin Smith Warrior Weekend is always packed with lots of enjoyable activities for students to sign up for. For the last warrior weekend of the 2015-2016 school year, the faculty and staff members in charge wanted to make it extra special.

After the SAT was finished Saturday morning, it was time to head off on all of the trips available. The first trip on Saturday was to Bo’s Laser Tag in Lenoir, North Carolina. Mr. Allen and Ms. Luksic took students to Bo’s to enjoy food,

Laser Tag, and the arcade games that were present.

One of the most exciting trips on Warrior Weekend was the fast food tours that Mr. Finklea enjoys taking. They “tour” around West Jefferson, stopping at all of the fast food places nearby to get their fix.

Students love the fast food tours because it is a chance for them to be able to order everything they want. Two of Mr. Finklea’s famous fast food tours were offered at different times.

Also on Saturday, a Mayfest Carnival trip at Pilot Mountain

was offered with Ms. Tobin while a trip to the Airbound Trampoline Park in WinstonSalem was offered with Mr. Crede, and a baseball game in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was offered with Mr. Knudsen.

Along with all of the off campus trips, social was also made special for the students staying on campus that night.

The Force Awakens, the new Star Wars movie was shown and the Tailgate Café and Campus Store were also open for students to buy snacks while the movie was being played. Students were also able to sit by the fire pits and roast marshmallows.

Warrior Weekend #3—Sunday Sunday was busy on ‘the Hill’ with the seniors attending a special breakfast hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Groves at the President’s Home. Following the delicious repast was the Senior-Youth Group Sunday Service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church.

The afternoon was quickly filled with action as

students went to Grayson Highlands State Park on a hike with Mr. Julius and Ms. Tobin.

Other students went to see Captain America or the Jungle Book and then stopped for dinner at favorite fast food restaurants in West Jefferson, NC.

For students remaining on campus, there was an ‘Ice Cream Social’ during the afternoon.

The Road to the Dick’s National Title

By Lindell Wigginton Oak Hill Academy arrived in New York City on March 31st to play in the Dick’s National Tournament. They entered the locker room where their new tournament jerseys awaited them. The team was excited and ready for tip-off.

The first game of the tournament was against Wasatch Academy. The Warriors hadn’t practiced in 17 days due to Spring Break, and it sure looked like it. The team started out very sluggish letting Wasatch Academy get up on them 10-0

for an early lead. The momentum shifted and everything started going right for Oak Hill. The Warriors led 5745 at half and never looked back.

The second half began with Oak Hill picking up right where they left off. The Warriors came out with energy and strong defense. Oak Hill had good production from their guard play and their “bigs.” Going into the fourth quarter, Oak Hill was up by a large

margin, and the Warriors coasted to a 81-64 win.

Lindell Wigginton led the game in scoring with 17 points.

Khadim Sy led the team in rebounds with ten. The next stop was Friday’s game against Miller Grove of Georgia.

By Matt Coleman On their second day in New York, the team got a first look at the future of Gatorade. There they watched tutorials of athletes such as Usain Bolt, Della Donne, and D’Angelo Russell. We also had the opportunity to try new Gatorade products. Afterwards, each coach and player was able to create his own custom Gatorade bottle.

The game against Miller Grove tipped off at 5:00 p.m.

The Warriors started the game with a lot of momentum and closed the first quarter with a 15-6

lead. During the second quarter, the tempo shifted, and Miller Grove slowly began to cut into the lead. With the Warriors missing easy shots at the basket and committing a few turnovers, Miller Grove took full advantage and was able to capitalize on the other end. However, the score was always in the Warriors’ favor. At halftime, Oak Hill was up 31-28.

The Warriors came out with energy for the second half, but so did Miller Grove. Miller Grove fought hard and had an answer for every basket scored.

Miller Grove took the lead at a pivotal time with just under two minutes to go in the fourth

quarter.

Thanks to a strong finish from Lindell Wigginton, a go-ahead layup from Matt Coleman, and a key defensive stop from Braxton Key, the Warriors were able to seal the deal.

Lindell Wigginton led the team in scoring with 12 points and right behind him was Matt Coleman with 11. Both Lindell and Matt made one 3-point field goal. Mario Kegler led the team in rebounds with nine total and Braxton grabbed eight as well.

The next stop was Madison Square Garden for the Oak Hill Warriors.

The Road to the Dick’s National Title

By Khadim Sy Day three in New York was championship Saturday and Oak Hill had the chance to make history.

With their bags packed, they headed to Madison Square Garden. Before the game Khadim Sy told himself that win or lose, he had a great year with his team and was glad to be on this journey with them. For the first three quarters of the game, the Warriors led La Lumiere. By the fourth quarter, La Lumiere

went on an 18 point run to tie the game.

Due to poor defense and a mentality to just maintain the score, the Warriors lost their lead within the last 50 seconds of the game. Two clutch-free throws by Braxton Key sent the game into overtime. Neither team gave up in overtime and the game went to the final second when Khadim tipped the ball in at the buzzer. Oak Hill won the Dick’s National Tournament 62-60. The team worked really hard for this victory. Braxton Key scored 20 points; Khadim Sy had 9 points and 9 rebounds; Matt Coleman scored eight

points; and Lindell Wigginton had 16 points. Ty-Shon Alexander scored 5 points and Mario Kegler and Devontae Shuler added two points each. It was a tough game, but the Warriors weren’t going to leave New York without the Championship.

The Mission of Oak Hill Academy

Oak Hill Academy is a coeducational, Baptist affiliated, boarding/day school committed to excellence in education and adolescent development in a non-military setting. The mission of Oak Hill Academy is to offer a safe, secure, nurturing environment for girls and boys needing a change in school, peer, community, or family relationships.

Oak Hill provides a structured college-preparatory program to students in grades 8-12. Our curriculum challenges the brightest student and encourages those who are unmotivated, who are underachieving, or who are experiencing difficulties in their school setting.
