The Oakham School Big Band will be “Out and About” in Braunston in Rutland for the first time performing a concert of big band swing along with vocal and instrumental solos. All proceeds will support the repair and maintenance of Braunston’s ancient church.

Join us for a tour of the centuries as we touch upon some of the golden moments in choral music history. From Handel’s iconic coronation anthem Zadok the Priest to Gregorio
Allegri’s famous Miserere mei with its haunting top Cs. As a tonic to this polyphonic splendour, Chilcott’s A Little Jazz Mass will provide earworms for the rest of the Summer Term.

In January 1933, Mr Fred Felton told the Northants Evening Telegraph “We are going to form a band and we are going to aim high”. Two years later the Munn and Felton Works Band were champions of Great Britain – and a brass band legend was born that has lived on for over 90 years. The GUS Band is now based in Northampton and regularly appears at concerts throughout the Midlands and beyond.

This concert offers the opportunity for our talented Lower School musicians to take to the stage and showcase their hard work in rehearsals this term. Join us in the chapel for a night of music written for (and used in) some of the great films of our time. We explore the musical worlds of some of film music’s greatest composers, and reflect on how the film industry has ensured the future of orchestral music for generations to come.

Always one of the most anticipated events of the year, our Big Band returns to the stage in the Doncaster Close marquee for an evening of fantastic live music. With two sets of classic jazz, soul and pop numbers, there promises to be music to suit all tastes! Pack a picnic for the interval, buy drinks from the marquee bar and swing into summer with our Big Band’s final performance of the year.
Please note that we cannot accept e-mail bookings or bookings in person. Seats/tables will be allocated on the seating plan on a first come, first served basis. Tables seat 10 and multiple tables cannot be purchased. Requests to sit near another guest’s table must be made by 16 May. Pupils may not purchase tickets. Pupils (Form 7/Year 12 only) must be seated with an adult at the event. Payment can be made by card at the time of booking, by cheque made payable to Oakham School or via school bills. Payment for ticket orders must be received within 7 working days of booking or tickets will be re-allocated. Please note that the use of candles is prohibited at this event.

Our graduating Form 7 musicians take to the stage one last time in a concert dedicated to spotlighting their musical talents. We can promise a varied group of instrumental and vocal performances, offering a chance to celebrate all that they have achieved in music during their time at Oakham School.
