Your Oakham Adventure offers a window into the rich co-curricular life that complements our academic and pastoral learning. Through our Connected Curriculum, pupils develop five essential skills – selfmanagement, research, thinking, social, and communication – that empower them to thrive both in and beyond school. These skills are embedded across every aspect of the Oakham experience: inside and outside the classroom.
Whether performing on stage, competing on the pitch, composing in the music studio, or navigating a mountain trail, pupils build confidence and resilience, and grow as team players. With over 125 weekly activities – from sailing and shooting to magazine editing and Model United Nations – they explore passions, discover hidden talents, and grow in character and capability.
Service options such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Combined Cadet Force, and Voluntary Action foster leadership and empathy, while unforgettable trips – from adventure camps in the UK to skiing in the Alps and diving in Malaysia – broaden horizons and deepen global understanding.
This book is a glimpse into the opportunities that await your child at Oakham. It’s a celebration of creativity, courage, and connection – and a testament to our belief that some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom.
James Robinson Deputy Head Co-Curriculum
Sport is an essential part of Oakham School life, where every pupil – regardless of ability or ambition – is empowered to engage, grow, and excel.
Our sports programme is built around three distinct strands:
• Major Team Sports – the heartbeat of Oakham’s sporting tradition.
• Core School Sports – offering variety and challenge across disciplines.
• Wellbeing and Lifestyle Activities – promoting lifelong health and balance.
As pupils progress through the School, they shape their own sporting journey, exploring new activities and deepening their commitment to the ones they love.

Pupils begin with a vibrant team sports programme: two weekly training sessions and exciting Wednesday fixtures. They compete against a range of schools, building confidence, friendships, and teamwork. Even those new to sport find joy and growth. Expert coaches guide every pupil through seamless progression from Year 7 to 13, ensuring they feel supported and inspired.
Sport brings year groups together through Saturday fixtures and weekly training. Pupils explore new activities beyond Games time, often playing multiple major sports. Choice expands across all three pathways, including their first taste of Wellbeing and Lifestyle Activities. Whether participating in cup competitions or trying something new, pupils continue to grow – physically, socially, and emotionally – supported by Oakham’s high-quality coaching and inclusive ethos.
Senior pupils refine their journey – some specialise, others play across multiple teams. Participation and performance go hand in hand. Senior teams run from 1st to 4th teams and beyond, ensuring every pupil has the chance to represent the School and remain actively involved in sport. This stage sees the highest engagement in Wellbeing and Lifestyle Activities, supporting physical and mental health and promoting lifelong positive habits.
Whether they are picking up an instrument for the first time or preparing for conservatoire auditions, Oakham offers every pupil the chance to explore, perform and grow.
From the soaring harmonies in the Chapel to the buzz of rehearsals in the Music School, Music is a vibrant, inclusive, and joyful part of daily life at Oakham School. Solo performances, ensemble collaborations, grand Gala concerts, and intimate recitals all play a part in the musical journey at Oakham. Each opportunity builds confidence, nurtures talent, and celebrates creativity.
With over 250 individual lessons, 15 weekly ensembles, and expert tuition from 30 visiting teachers and professional musicians, pupils are supported at every level. Termly music exams (RockSchool, LCM, ABRSM) and regular rehearsals help pupils develop their skills and find their musical voice.
To ensure every pupil has the opportunity to experience the joys of music, we offer free group lessons in Year 7, giving every child the chance to try a new instrument and uncover their musical potential. Pupils can join the Lower School Choir and Ensembles, and explore enrichment options such as gospel choir and steel pans. They perform in termly Lower School Concerts and take part in wider school events alongside older students. These early experiences spark curiosity and build confidence, laying the foundation for a lifelong love of music.
Performance is at the heart of Oakham’s musical life. Over a quarter of the School takes part in regular ensembles, from choirs and orchestras to bands and musical theatre. Whether performing in a packed Chapel, in the pit of our Queen Elizabeth Theatre, or at an intimate studio concert, pupils learn to express themselves, collaborate with others, and shine in front of an audience.
Music brings people together – and nowhere is that more evident than in our musical competitions. Interhouse Singing fosters community spirit, while the annual Singing and Piano Duet Competitions, judged by professional musicians, are highlights of the School calendar.
Oakham musicians regularly perform in the wider community, from weekly lunchtime concerts at All Saints Church to appearances at prestigious venues across the UK and overseas. These experiences build confidence and connect pupils to the world beyond School.
Whether pursuing music professionally or simply playing for joy, Oakham pupils carry their passion with them. Alumni include Daniel Hyde (Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge), composer Paul Spicer, and singers Katie Hall, Jack Lee, and Dingle Yandell. Many former pupils continue to perform for pleasure in university ensembles and beyond.
From first steps on stage to standing ovations in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Oakham inspires a lifelong love of theatre and movement in every pupil. Whether you are discovering your voice in Year 7 or preparing for auditions at RADA, Oakham nurtures creativity, confidence and craft.
Drama and Dance are woven into the rhythm of School life. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre (QET), our 200-seat professional venue, hosts an eclectic mix of productions –from full-scale musicals to experimental student pieces. The historic Old School building offers an atmospheric space for intimate studio shows and workshops.
With expert guidance from dynamic staff – many of whom are industry practitioners - pupils explore performance, design and production. From lighting and set design to acting and choreography, every aspect of theatre is brought to life.
All pupils in Years 7-9 study Drama and Dance, building movement, performance, and creative skills. Beyond curriculum drama and dance showcases, pupils can star in Lower School productions like The Lion King and The Wind in the Willows giving them their first taste of the spotlight. These early experiences spark imagination and build the foundations for future theatrical adventures.
With five major productions and dance showcases each year, Oakham offers pupils endless chances to shine. From West Side Story to Romeo and Juliet, pupils perform in musicals, classics and contemporary plays. Scholars’ Productions explore cutting-edge drama, while the Shakespeare Monologue Competition celebrates solo performance. Behind the scenes, pupils take on lighting, sound, set design, hair and make-up, and Front of House roles, learning the full spectrum of theatre-making.
Oakham supports aspiring performers every step of the way. Weekly acting lessons lead to LAMDA and Shakespeare exams, while audition coaching prepares pupils for National Youth Theatre, university and drama school applications. Recent alumni have received offers from RADA, LAMDA, The Lir and the American Academy of Dramatic Art.
Dance is a vital part of Oakham’s creative life. Free weekly dance classes, specialist workshops, and the annual Dance Showcases allow pupils to explore styles and celebrate their achievements. Whether pursuing acting or simply loving movement, dance builds discipline, expression, and joy.
Oakham’s legacy in the Performing Arts is extraordinary. Alumni include Matthew Macfadyen, Miles Jupp, Katie Mitchell, Richard Hope, Lucy Johnson, and Andy Harries spanning the National Theatre, RSC, stand-up comedy and Oscar-winning film. Their journeys began on Oakham’s stages.
In Year 9, pupils take part in a carousel of activities across the year, introducing them to Oakham’s three Service options: the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), and Voluntary Action (VA). Each term brings new challenges and opportunities to develop practical skills and personal growth.
The year ends with a memorable three-day experience: a two-day walking expedition that fulfils the Bronze DofE requirement, followed by a day of team-building activities at Rutland Water.
Oakham’s Adventurous Learning programme gives pupils the chance to challenge themselves, build resilience, and discover new strengths through hands-on experiences in the great outdoors. Whether lighting a campfire for the first time or navigating a mountain trail, pupils learn to work together, solve problems, and push their boundaries.
Adventurous Learning begins in Year 7 with a bushcraft camp that sets the tone for the Oakham journey. Pupils learn how to build shelters, light fires and master the art of camouflage – developing teamwork and confidence from day one.
In Year 8, pupils head to the Jurassic Coast for an adventure camp packed with activities like coasteering, archery, caving, and paddle boarding. These experiences spark curiosity, courage, and camaraderie in equal measure.
After beginning their Bronze Award in Year 9, pupils continue through Silver and Gold in Years 10–12. Even those new to DofE can take on the Gold Award in Year 12 – a transformative experience that challenges pupils physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Expedition options are varied and exciting:
• Silver DofE: walking and canoeing
• Gold DofE: walking, canoeing, or sailing.
Two dedicated weekends in October and May bring the programme to life, with practice expeditions and activities that build teamwork, independence, and perseverance ahead of the Qualifying Expeditions.
From Year 10 onwards, Oakham pupils embark on a journey of service, challenge, and leadership through our three core Service options: the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), and Voluntary Action (VA).
These programmes offer pupils the chance to develop resilience, empathy, and initiative – skills that last a lifetime. Whether leading a team through a mountain expedition, mentoring younger pupils, or supporting local charities, Service at Oakham is about stepping up, giving back, and growing into the kind of leader who makes a difference.
Pupils can choose to take part in all three Service options or combine one with other weekly activities. Each path offers unique opportunities to lead, serve and grow. These experiences shape pupils into thoughtful, motivated individuals ready to take on the world.
In Year 12 or 13 students pupils can also become DofE Young Leaders, mentoring and guiding younger participants. With online training and tailored roles, Young Leaders gain valuable experience while contributing to the Volunteering section of their own Award. It’s a chance to lead with purpose and inspire others.
Leadership is built into the DNA of the CCF. From the moment pupils join, they learn discipline, teamwork and responsibility through practical training and service weekends. As they progress through the rank structure, cadets take on leadership roles, helping to run and deliver training to younger pupils.
In the Sixth Form, the combined package of military training, Gold DofE, and Level 2 BTEC prepares cadets to become confident, capable leaders. Senior NCOs play a vital role in shaping the next generation, and pupils can also apply for MoD-run leadership courses to further hone their skills. Cadets can complete their Gold DofE expedition through CCF, combining military skills with adventurous training in a unique and rewarding format.
VA is all about making a meaningful impact in the community. Pupils work with local charities, organise initiatives, and lead projects that foster empathy, responsibility, and social awareness. VA Leadership offers Sixth Form pupils the chance to inspire others, build confidence and develop teamwork – all while making a real difference.
By engaging with people of different ages, backgrounds, and needs, pupils expand their horizons and nurture a deeper understanding of the world around them. A journey through Voluntary Action is a journey through emotional intelligence, empathy, and skills that last a lifetime.
At Oakham, creativity takes many forms – from artistic expression to technical innovation. Pupils can explore the visual and performing arts through Art, Design Technology, Drama, and Music, or channel their ideas into writing and editing for SpOken, the School’s literary magazine.
For budding designers and engineers, opportunities like STEM on Track and the Gold CREST Award offer hands-on experience in problem-solving, invention and real-world application. Whether you’re sketching, soldering, scripting, or sculpting, Oakham gives you the space to think creatively, build boldly and express your unique perspective.
For those who love physical challenge, the Activities Programme includes shooting, fives, sailing, and a wide range of sports. These sessions offer both competitive and recreational options, allowing pupils to stay active, build fitness and enjoy the thrill of the game.
At Oakham, the adventure does not stop when lessons end. With over 125 activities to choose from each week, pupils have the freedom to explore their interests, develop new skills, and discover hidden talents.
Built into the weekly timetable, our Activities Programme is designed to be as diverse as our pupils, offering opportunities in sport, the arts, service, leadership, creativity, and pure fun. Whether you are building a robot, editing a magazine, or mastering the art of stage combat, there is something here for everyone.
Every activity at Oakham helps pupils grow, whether it’s teamwork on the fives court, strategic thinking in Dungeons & Dragons, or public speaking in Model United Nations (MUN). These experiences build confidence, resilience and curiosity, enriching pupils’ education far beyond the classroom.
From shooting and sailing to drama, music, and service, pupils learn to lead, collaborate, and think creatively. Many activities also offer pathways to nationally recognised awards and qualifications, such as the Gold Engineering CREST Award or a First Aid qualification.
Many activities focus on leadership and service, from CCF and DofE to Voluntary Action and Entrepreneurship. Pupils can take part in MUN, lead clubs, mentor younger students, or organise events – developing skills that prepare them for life beyond Oakham.
Oakham’s commitment to adventure includes flagship tours that happen on a regular cycle:

These experiences are designed to complement academic learning and nurture holistic development. Pupils return with broadened horizons, deeper friendships, and unforgettable memories.
Many trips are designed to enhance academic learning, bringing subjects to life in real-world settings. Geography fieldwork in Venice, Business and DT studies in Northern Italy, or language immersion in Spain, pupils gain fresh perspectives from all these hands-on experiences.
Trips at Oakham aren’t just about academics, they’re about personal growth, teamwork, and global citizenship. Whether pupils are performing on tour, skiing down a mountain, or building coral habitats, they’re developing resilience, empathy, and leadership.
These experiences foster independence and confidence, helping pupils become well-rounded individuals ready to thrive in a global world.
At Oakham, giving back is part of who we are. Every pupil is encouraged to make a difference, whether through fundraising, volunteering, or simply lending a hand. Supporting our local community is woven into the fabric of School life, offering countless opportunities to support others and grow as compassionate, active citizens.
Oakham School proudly partners with the Matt Hampson Foundation and Voluntary Action Rutland, supporting their work through fundraising, awareness, and hands-on collaboration. These partnerships offer pupils meaningful opportunities to develop leadership, mentoring, and empathy skills through volunteering, events, and joint projects.
We are also proud to have a strong and active partnership with The Rutland Learning Trust, working together to support education across the region. Alongside De Montfort University, Leicestershire County Cricket Club, and many other local and national organisations, we ensure our pupils gain exceptional experiences while contributing to a healthier, more connected community both locally and beyond.
Pupils across all year groups take part in creative and energetic fundraising events within their House communities to bond with one another and raise money for a worthwhile cause. From sponsored cycle rides to bake sales, these events are not only fun, they teach pupils how to lead, organise and inspire others.
Working in partnership with the Matt Hampson Foundation, this award recognises Sixth Form pupils who go above and beyond in service. It includes volunteering at the Get Busy Living Centre, supporting rehabilitation and wellbeing for young people who have experienced life-changing injuries. Pupils also help organise events and fundraisers, gaining invaluable experience and making a real difference.
VA is a cornerstone of Oakham’s commitment to service. Weekly placements include helping in local primary schools and nurseries, supporting the elderly in care homes or their own residences, running activities for disabled young people through the Phab Club, hosting ‘A Cuppa and Chat’ for people with mild dementia, an event now nationally recognised by Age UK for its positive impact
VA students also organise and lead charity initiatives, raising hundreds of pounds and gaining hands-on experience in event planning, teamwork and leadership.
