PREFERRED CHARITIES | MINECRAFT FUNDRAISER

Lance Sahagun | 12 | Treasurer

Hello all returning and new Key Clubbers! I’d love to take this article to reintroduce myself and better explain the fundraising side of Key Club, because after constant emails and emphasis on community service, I hope we do not forget the other critical half of our commitment to our local, national, and global communities! My name is Lance and I currently serve as your treasurer for the majority of this school year! Key Club acts an international service organization at the high school level as a branch of Kiwanis, and its three main service partners include the Children’s Miracle Network, UNICEF, and March of Dimes. Specifically, for our Key Club, we belong to the California-Nevada-Hawaii (shortened CNH) District, and as such, we have a special emphasis project through the Pediatric Trauma Program (shortened PTP). This is our primary preferred charity created by the Kiwanis CNH Children’s Fund to reduce the number of deaths or injuries of children from preventable trauma. PTP partners with 6 hospitals across the three-state district, and funds towards PTP go towards preventable injury education, supplies and learning materials for hospitals, etc. The Children’s Miracle Network is an organization dedicated to raising money for the benefit of children and hospitals through purchasing necessary equipment, hosting training for staff, conducting research, implementing outreach programs, and providing healthcare for children whose parents cannot afford to pay. The United Nations International Children’s Fund, or UNICEF, is an international organization with the aim to protect the rights and wellbeing of every child. Kiwanis International specifically aides through the Eliminate Project, which has the goal of eliminating maternal neonatal tetanus in the world, which results in the loss of 34,000 innocent mothers and children annually. Lastly, March of Dimes is an organization with the mission to raise awareness on premature births and their prevention through the improvement of women’s access to preconception, prenatal, and interconception education, as well as enhanced prenatal care and risk reduction services. That was just a brief overview of our 4 preferred charities! Remember, our focus for fundraising goes towards the Pediatric Trauma Program and UNICEF through the Eliminate Project. If you have any questions about our preferred charities and fundraising, always feel free to reach out to me or any other officer on board! If you read this far, thank you so much, and please (I’m excited and scared that this is my first time saying this) PAY YOUR DUES!!!

This was one of the most eventful days for OAKC virtually. It’s not like I loved Minecraft. I haven’t ever really played the game often at any point in my life. But I knew that it was a very welldesigned game that provided a lot of nostalgia. I definitely remember the memories of the Minecraft Hunger Games that took YouTube by storm in the early 2010s. Therefore, when we were able to plan a running tournament that could also help our club’s cause for PTP, I knew this would be a special moment to appreciate for the rest of the year. I knew I wasn’t gonna win any sort of competition, but I knew I had to play to help the cause. To start, the competition was a little slow in the first game. It was a build competition, and it honestly had the most potential as an entertaining event. However, it took many minutes to get started, and it actually ended up breaking down after just a couple of rounds. So, we moved onto Hunger Games and parkour, the bread and butter of Minecraft’s competitive nature. I lost the Hunger Games, but I still had fun. I didn’t win parkour, either, but I loved to participate in all the jumps and obstacles. Ultimately, the Minecraft fundraiser was not the most effective, nor was it executed to perfection. However, I believe that the event was still significant towards our PTP goal. It showed that we were willing to be creative and daring, qualities necessary for being productive during quarantine.

This year’s COVID-19 crisis has provided many challenges for us due to social distancing, and fundraising is no exception. With such limitations, it is necessary to be more creative and open to new ideas of how to raise more funds for the club and to reach our PTP goal. The OAKC Minecraft Game Night fundraiser this month was a refreshing idea for a new fundraiser, bringing people together online to have fun playing games while also raising money for charity. Of course, there were definitely some hiccups and problems along the way. Hosting an online game tournament through a Minecraft server is much easier said than done, and there were technical issues throughout the session. The difficulty of the games and an unclear set of rules also made things rough around the edges, and most of the time things didn’t go the way they were intended. However, I still enjoyed taking part in the game night fundraiser and thought that it was an interesting new idea that could potentially be done better in the future to raise funds for Key Club.
