EDITOR’S NOTE

A

loha Sunshines!

I’m in shock at how quickly the month of June went by! Halfway to the new school year! This month of July brings a ton of cool events for all of you (BEACH BOOOOOMMBAAA)! Also, Concert on the Greens is going to continue up until the 20th of August, so it’s a fantastic way to stack up on hours! But apart from Key Club, what are you all doing with your precious last month of summer break? Personally, I’m really looking forward to summer classes for Calculus and Chemistry (am I right?)! Jokes aside, really take this month to reflect on what you hope to accomplish in this coming school year and start working towards it! (Wow, I should write a self-help book!) Honestly though, get a headstart on your goals so you don’t end up studying for your SAT a week before (guilty).

Well, we’re already doling out the life advice, so let’s forge on, shall we?

(I am by no means telling you how to live your life, this list is mostly things I need to take to heart!)

1) Take some time out to hang out with your friends and family, too. I’m not very diligent with this , and I should really step it up. No, calling your friend up to stay glue to your phones searching for elusive animated creatures outside doesn’t really count. But, to be fair, it is progress!

2) Make sure to keep an organized schedule of events or appointments so you don’t overlap things and having to end up canceling or sacrificing one thing for another! Set reminders on your phone so you don’t forget something and cancel last minute (sorry, Alvin).

3) Hit the books! Not literally, we’re not trying to set the plot of Fahrenheit 451 in motion! It’s really nice to just wind back and relax with Great Expectations, right?

4) Extra virgin coconut oil. You’ll be surprised with how many ways you can use it and how good it is for you!

Unless you’re allergic to it, of course. If so, steer clear!

5) Expand your horizons. musically. Listen to some new music, and explore new genres! Maybe just update your go to playlist.

I just wanted to check up on you all and remind you to have fun and enjoy the rest of your summer!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER ello Suns!

I hope you all are doing well as we move into the second month of summer. I’m sure your vacation has been filled with exciting adventures and memorable experiences! Either that, or you’re like me, and have been spending the past month trying to recover my body from the toll it took throughout all of last year. Whatever you spent your last month doing, I’m sure it was super fun and relaxing! If you’re ever bored at home/tired of watching Friends for the 5th time, then I would greatly suggest volunteering through Key Club every Saturday! The summer is an amazing opportunity to accumulate volunteer hours through the multitude of service projects available every weekend. This should be even easier now, as you’re no longer bound by the restrictive chains of AP classes or the looming fear of standardized testing. For those of you who are still spending your days alongside these stressors, don’t worry! You’ll eventually look back on these times and realize that things aren’t nearly as bad as they seem. In the meantime, a great way to manage this stress is through finding a constructive outlet that will allow you to explore yourself. For me, the best way to manage this stress has always been through serving the community.

I remember coming out of my freshman year with a bunch of angst directed towards my poor academic performance and my lack of direction for the future. Out of sheer boredom, I decided to volunteer at the Concert on the Green, a decision that has changed my life completely. Doing so allowed me to find an outlet for my frustrations, and allowed me to develop a strong work ethic and provided me with direction for my goals. Although I still lacked a clear path for the future by the end of the summer, I did learn one thing: I wanted to help others as I continued down my several walks of life. Whether it be in college, work, and in my free time, I knew that helping others was a calling that could not be ignored.

Sorry for rambling about my life story, but I really do hope that this has helped convince you to open up your heart and serve your community. If that doesn’t convince you, just remember that you’ll receive a graduation stole upon reaching 100 hours, and a medal for reaching 150 hours!

Officer Training Conference NEVERLAND OF SERVICE

W

hat more can they tell you to “train” you after three years of going to the same training conference. I dread going to OTC mainly because it’s a long training conference with a lot of the same information. Information that they can’t really tell you and you can’t really listen and learn. You learn with experience.

You learn as an officer that not everyone who signs up will go to your event. You learn to arrive to an event earlier than your members so you can get situated and help them

get situated. You learn how to help someone become comfortable not push them to feeling embarrassed and awkward. No session can teach you that. You as an officer will come across these challenges and just tackle them.

With every OTC I been too I have learned the to enjoy the small things.

To just do the weird scangerhunts they pass out why not embarrass yourself for three seconds when in reality in 10 min no one is going to remember or even care.

Being and officer at OTC isn’t about the sessions. It’s about finding small things to bond over with the people

who are in your life now. To meet new people who will be in your life tomorrow and to be able to laugh at your own embarrassing moments. It’s to learn to be an officer by experience.

“It’s always harder to start than to finish”, thank you to Huda for being an officer outside of the sessions and being my push to doing a silly scavenger hunt. Without her I wouldn’t have enjoyed my embarrassing moments that made my last OTC amazing.

I

finally went to my first Officer Training Conference on June 25th.

I got to learn of all kinds of different things. I decided to go to the BEE-ing a Leader workshop for the first session, and then I went to the Effective Communications workshop for the second session.

At the BEE-ing a Leader workshop, led by Kelly Tran and Snghyun Byon, I was introduced to many different approaches, methods, and tips that could help me in my position. I learned of everything that leadership is and how to effectively BEE a leader as a board member and outside of Key Club.

Division 41 North Lieutenant Governor, Vanessa Yang, led the Effective Communication workshop that I attended next. At this workshop, I was taught of the do’s and don’ts of communication with those around me. I learned more helpful advice on

how to talk to faculty advisors, Kiwanians, parents, Lieutenant Governors, and fellow board and general members. I discovered that I should always be professional yet friendly while greeting anyone of any age, whether it be by oral or written communication.

These workshops have really taught me a lot about how to act and many different approaches to situations.

They’ve really strengthened my core of BEE-ing a leader and I can’t wait to put these skills in use! Officer Training Conference was really useful, and I can’t wait to bring along friends to go to Region Training Conference too!

O

n June 17th, Division 30 South held June DCM: Spectacular Sandwiches at Twila Reid Park. This month’s DCM was centered on the service project of making peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for the Long Beach Rescue Mission.

As usual, we started off the DCM by listening to LTG Kelly’s update us on the CNH District goals, future Division events, and club recognition for May. Can I get an “OH YEAH” for Oxford Academy for receiving fifth shining club of the month?

After the meeting, the division spirit coordinators led fun bonding games as DLT was preparing the service project. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to participate in the service project because I was receiving secretary training, but I heard that it went well.

Although they ran out of bread early, everyone told me that it was fun to bond with the Division while making sandwiches for the shelter. It’s always a rewarding experience to spend a free afternoon serving the community with your friends!

une DCM was held at Twila Reid Park in Anaheim on June 17. After a series of engaging icebreakers, such as when we all gathered up by club in lines to catch other lines’ flags, we rallied around the picnic tables for the DCM and service project. Everyone worked together enthusiastically to spread peanut butter and jelly, assemble sandwiches, pack them in plastic bags, and store them in boxes.

It was really fun to bond with our little “assembly line” while at the same time knowing that these sandwiches were going towards a good cause.

Shoutout to all of the members who came, and I hope that you all keep volunteering over the summer!

his past month’s DCM really showed me how much cooperation with others could accomplish. Our LTG Kelly Tran set a goal of about 1000 sandwiches for the event. However, our Key Clubs were able to produce over twice as much as the original goal. I was so shocked by how much the Key Clubs together were able to contribute.

With all the members present working so hard, we were able to reach our goal ahead of time.

The spirit coordinators quickly organized bonding games that took up the rest of the DCM. On my way home, I could still not fathom how much one division of Key Club was able to accomplish in less than 3 hours.

W

hen I first joined Key Club, I was volunteering with two of my closest friends at the time. Since then, it has been a tradition of mine to return to the events that helped immerse me in Key Club every summer.

Returning to this event for the third year in a row, I felt the same as I did two years ago, when I was just a lost freshman looking for something to do over the weekend. Once again, I found myself doing exactly what I loved, helping others.

If you’ve been a long time reader of these newsletters, you’d probably know that I write about this event every year. Usually, I write about what I did at this event. This time, I’m writing about what this event did to me. This event reminded me of my roots, and allowed me to see through the eyes of the general member I was when I was in 9th grade. Year after year, this event has continued to shape who I am and provide me with valuable perspective. As I move away from being the president who’s always caught up in paperwork and chaperones, or from the project chair who was caught up in finding events, I find myself moving towards what made me fall in love with this club in the first place. For that, I am forever grateful.

Despite this, here are three reasons why you should volunteer this summer!

You can earn a Key Club stole if you reach 100 hours! It is easy quite simple to achieve! If you make a goal to yourself to volunteer 8-9 hours a month, you can get 100 hours within a year!

Now, you can even earn a Key Club medal if you reach 150+ hours! If you already reached 100 hours, and you want another challenge, we got a new item. If you have over 150 hours, you will be able to earn a Key Club medal at graduation as well.

You can spend time having fun with your friends while earning hours. With summer here, I know it is easy to just stay in your house, binge watching kdramas or other tv shows. But, if you invite your friends to hang at the park or the beach while still earning hours and making a difference, it will get everyone to smile and be happy!

I

t was my first time chairing/volunteering for the Concert on the Green series and I got to say, it had a great time volunteering there. How great is it to listen to music and volunteer at the same time? It’s pretty awesome.

Those who volunteered, were helping serve food for the attendees of the concert and most of them were older people. It was so cute seeing them dance with their spouses or even their dog! We were able to have some conversations while serving them and it was great seeing a smile on their face. I was also able to bring along a friend to volunteer at this event. She said she would sign up for this event again, which, I absolutely agree with.

LANDELL CARNIVAL HELEN PHAN || PROJECT CHAIR

T

he Landell Carnival was a wonderful event! Even though it rained without notice, after a few hours of hard work, the was carnival running smoothly.

As the rain stopped pouring, families begin to appear to spend a day at the Landell Carnival. We were given a chance to relax before the carnival was in full swing. The person in charge even gave us two free vouchers for any food or drink in the carnival!

During the break, volunteers were able to watch the amazing talent show the school had provided. There was also a silent action and cake walk. The best parts of the carnival were the rock climbing wall, a train, and a dizzying ride.

After the break, everyone from Oxford in the morning shift went to help spray paint children’s hair different colors at a booth. For the next hour, we had a lovely time spraying on the wacky hair colors that put smiles on everyone’s face.

Although I couldn’t stay for the late shift, I had a fantastic time and would definitely volunteer for this event again.

DOWNTOWN ANAHEIM 5K HUDA SALEH || PROJECT CHAIR

O

n Saturday, June 11th, the Downtown Anaheim Association hosted the Northgate Downtown Anaheim 5K. Volunteers were supposed to arrive at 5:30 in the morning to help with early and late registration of the runners. I worked at the late registration table. Our task was to help people who didn’t sign up for the race online, to register on the day of the race. Runners would have to fill out a form with some personal information, and then we would give them a race bib. Before we handed the runners their race bib, some other volunteers and I would write down the bib number onto their forms so that they could be entered into the race computer system. I’ve never worked on race registration before, so it was nice to take on a different job while volunteering at a race.

After late registration finished, the other volunteers and I got to enjoy some free stuff from the booths while we waited for the race to start. Once the race started, we helped to cheer on the runners for both the adult 5K race and the kids 1K race. We even got to ring our new cowbells while cheering! All in all, volunteering for the 5k was a nice start to my Saturday morning.
