President's Corner!

Hello lovely Key Clubber!

If you’re reading this, I have two things to say: 1) Welcome to amazing May Newsletter created by Jennifer La! 2)

You made it through (half) of AP testing! Congratulations!

The past month has been fairly turbulent with intense cramming for all these AP tests but it’s almost over and I am so relieved. Now we can all go back to volunteering! Hooray!

Remember that whatever happens, your score does not equal your worth. I, as long as everyone else, will still love you!

April has been a fairly calm month, but one thing that did happen OAKC at Division Banquet was that we won CLUB OF THE YEAR and MOST HOURS SERVED! Can I get an oh yeah? On behalf of every OAKC board member and Mrs. V, I’d like to thank the members for being the best members in the world! Literally without your help, our school, community, and club would not be the same. You have made such a difference and touched the lives of many with all your service not only the past year but also the years before (unless you’re a freshman—then you will influence many J). Keep up the amazing work, and keep volunteering!

As we go into May, school is almost over, but don’t forget that Key Club never stops serving! We still have meeting on Wednesdays during lunch in the choir room, so if you’re feeling bored or lonely or you just want to be around other super amazing people, come out for ten minutes of your time! Summer is when the suns shine the brightest, so make sure to volunteer between now and August (we start school August 12!)

Hey Patriots!

This is your Bulletin Editor, Jennifer La, back with for this month’s newsletter! (: YAY! So with all of these upcoming projects, exams, and etc., it has been very difficult for me to balance a lot of things out. But, nonetheless, I still present to you the May Newsletter!! I hope all is well with these upcoming AP Exams! Don’t stress everyone!! You’ll do just fine! Don’t give up! We can do this together !

In this past month, we had many events such as the Annual Sunny Olympics and other fantastic service events such as OC Food Bank, Ronald McDonald's Run. and Egg Hunts! And so many wonderful shots of these events from our very own historians! (: Be sure to contact me or any of the board members if your are interested in appearing in the newsletter!

Don’t be shy because I’m very friendly and I won’t bite (maybe…) Hehe.

OC Food Bank The OC Food Bank. Everyone was emphasizing about how it was a “fan favorite.” Initially, I didn’t see the big deal. This was probably due to my bad first experience in early freshman year, aka several months ago. When I had arrived to the event, not only did the event chair come late, but the event was eventually canceled because of schedule conflicts or something else. As a little freshman, I didn’t know what to think, so I held a tiny grudge for the remainder of the year. Little did I know, this event would turn my attitude around.

To be honesty, with the end of the year approaching, my eagerness for volunteer has honestly started to die down. Lately, I’ve been feeling down and not in the mood to volunteer. It felt more like a chore than a passion. After months of what seemed to be “mindless volunteering,” I forgot what really captivated my love for Key Club. Why do we do it in the first place? Why do we wake up at 5 AM to drive to an event thirty minutes away? Luckily, the OC Food Bank taught me why, as cheesy as that sounds.

There was specifically this one guy in his mid-thirties that triggered my love for volunteering again. Even over the noise of the chaos, I could just hear him singing at the top of his lungs. His loud voice bounced off the wall while Sugar by Maroon 5 blasted through the speakers. His singing might have been atrocious, but his enthusiasm was infectious. I couldn’t stop smiling. You seriously could sense the energy radiating off him. He was genuinely happy and pumped to be devoting his time to helping out. This random stranger taught me why I love this club in the first place. It’s the passion. The infectious passion and spirit that radiates off others was why I fell in love with Key Club to begin with.

Not only did that random stranger change my outlook, but also after the event finished, the event coordinator was preaching to us about how even though the work may seem laborious and repetitive, you are playing an important part in society. With every box you pack, you are making a big difference in that family’s life. You just need to imagine you were handing each box that you made to someone you knew personally. By doing that, you can fully feel the impact that volunteering has. These little, inspiring phrases helped motivate me to keep on volunteering and trying my best to help out the community. We don’t do service for the hours. We do it to make a difference in the world. Hopefully,these words will inspire everyone else to volunteer at the OC Food Bank next time or just volunteer in general!

The inside of the warehouse seriously looked like Costco. That was my first thought as I entered the OC Food Bank warehouse for the first time.

Along with the OAKC members present, there were many other volunteers too. Our job was to pack boxes of food for needy senior citizens. We were split up into different teams and assigned different jobs, such as putting together boxes and restocking supplies. My group formed one of the assembly lines that was packing the boxes, and I was given the job of packing rice and apple juice.

The OC Food Bank was one of the events that occurred on April 25th at 8:30 to 10:30 in the morning. It was quite a fun event yet tiring at the same time. I was the chair of the event and the purpose of ‘OC Food Bank’ is to create boxes filled with food to ship out to those in need of them. We worked really vigorously and hard to package items into the boxes. We were split up into teams, our club stuck together in one. We were team #2 and we were split into roles as well. There were people packaging items into the boxes, there were other members taping together boxes for us to store things in them, and a few of us were cutting open the boxes and carrying the material over to be packaged. I was one of the few carrying or ‘distributing’ items to fellow packaging members. Some of the things we packaged were: Peanut Butter, Canned Fruits, Canned Applesauce, Milk in a Box, Powdered Milk, Liters of Apple Juice and Cranberry Juice, Packaged Chicken and finally Rice.

We worked together and fit them all in a nice box that was then packaged and shipped out everywhere to those in need.

The work was fairly straightforward, and we were soon filling pallet after pallet of boxes. It was both exciting and motivating to watch the mountain of finished boxes grow higher, knowing that they would be eagerly received by the senior citizens. What made the event most fun though was the interactions with my fellow volunteers, both from Key Club and not— whether we were laughing at jokes, posing for silly pictures, or singing to the songs that came on the radio, it all made for an incredibly fun experience that was well worth the soreness in my arms and legs afterwards.

3rd Annual Sunny Olympics The Sunny Olympics has come again! The Division 30 South has hosted their annual Sunny Olympics at Modjeska Park, located in Anaheim! John Hoang’s first DCM, our sassiest Lieutenant Governor yet, has started the 2015-2016 term with fun games, competitions, and cheers! Here’s a recap:

Mr. LTG first did the usual things at a DCM: attendance, sunny updates, and division reminders. John finally revealed his Division Leadership Team where 6 of our own Oxford Academy Patriots were granted a position! (Can I get an OH YEAH!) John, in addition continued the activity of “Open Mind,” started by our IP LTG Jordan Garcia! An Open Mind is where anyone is allowed to speak of his or her thoughts, goals, or anything in relations to the topic. This month’s Open Mind was about goals! And, our division has set of goal to raise $2,000 for PTP, $1,500 for Project Eliminate, and a goal of 30,000 service hours! (OH YEAH!) After the meeting was finally over, we began our competitions. At first, it was the hula-hoop race to see who would stand the longest. Next, there was the balloon toss, egg in a spoon, relay race, and dodge ball. In the end, there was a sprit battle where the clubs can show their enthusiasm and mad skills! After all this playing and bonding time, in the end, Western Key Club was victorious and earned the golden stick in the end! Congratulations!

This DCM was a great way to relax the mind from school, socialize with friends, and meet new people.

Thanks to our L-O-V-E for our LTG, we splashed him with a bucket of water! If you don’t want to miss next month’s DCM, held at Servite High School, it will be on May 30th from 1pm-3pm! Come and get service hours as well as rekindle and rejoice that AP Testing is over! Keep on shining key-uties!~

Since I’ve joined Key Club, I’ve been to about every DCM. April’s DCM was nothing short from amazing.

It was the first DCM for our new lieutenant governor and the third annual Sunny Olympics. All fourteen schools were gathered at Modjeska Park filled with the same burning desire. The desire to win the coveted Sun Spirit Stick. Each game was full of fun. They ranged from water-balloon tosses to dodgeball. I couldn’t have a better club to participate in all the games with.

Of course, before the games began, John Hoang, our LTG of the 2015-2016 term, gave everyone gathered updates on the division. Another thing different about April DCM, besides that it was the first DCM he was leading as lieutenant governor, was that during this DCM the new division leadership team was going to be announced. I was one of the applicants in high hopes of being able to serve on the team, but I didn’t think that much of it. I didn’t expect that I’d get the position I received.

To my surprise, I was appointed as executive assistant of the division. Somewhat surprised after my name was announced, I stood up and walked to the front of the group. I was then crowned with a paper crown spray painted gold. To a normal student’s eyes, the paper crown may have held no importance, but to me it meant the world.

Becoming executive assistant was super important, because to me it represented the love and passion I put into Key Club.

From being a general member to being appointed as Oxford Academy’s publicist and the division’s executive assistant, my year in Key Club has let me experience so many new things and meet so many new people.

I never expected, when I joined Key Club, that I’d be where I am now, but I’m glad that I started this journey. Key Club has become something that makes me the most happy in life. The year’s been more legendary than one could ever dream. This club has shown that through passion and persistence, you can achieve a number of great things, and I can now say I’ve done something useful with my life.

Key Club is definitely the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had.

Arnold Carnival Hello fellow Suns!

I’m here today to describe to you one of my favorite events, the Arnold Carnival! At the Arnold Carnival, our volunteers had a great time setting up the carnival and working at game booths. The place was loaded with fun games too, from a hamster ball race to a jail where you pay the sheriffs to catch one of your friends. I had the great opportunity ro work for many hours at the jail, alongside our outstanding Key Clubbers Alvin Hua, Natalie Nguyen, and Joshua Kang, and we spent a lot of time wrestling kids into the jail. Although it was tiring, it felt really fun, and we got free food from it too!

For future reference, their cheesburgers are on point ;). But as the carnival became more and more crowded, horor struck.

Everthing was fine until the rain started to pour down heavily.

People ran for shelter and escaped back into their warm cars, while us volunteers were stuck manning the jail in the sad, damp weather. To counterract this sadness, a few volunteers (myself invluded, sadly) decided to use some squirt bottles to have a water gun fight! As we struggled to face the rain, we also had to face the squirts of water that continually came our way. In my opinion, it was the perfect event, as the fun that we had made the fun of volunteering even greater! Although this may seem like a dream event, it wasn’t. It’s real, and you should definitely volunteer for it next year! Keep on shining Suns!

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to volunteer at Arnold Elementary’s yearly carnival, Arnoldland. After I got dropped off and went into the school, I was immediately surrounded by the Key Club energy that I fell in love with. I was met with Key Clubbers from Whitney, Kennedy and Cypress and at that point, I knew this event was going to be filled with sunshine! The people at Arnold were incredibly sweet, and showed their hospitality to us in many forms. They gave us a lot of support when we needed it, and were constantly available if we needed any help. They also gave us free food, which is always amazing to receive from an event. Afterwards, as we were tearing down the event, the people at Arnold were very appreciative, offering us even more refreshments, to which we politely declined (service first!!)

They later showed their gratitude by thanking all of us, and even offering to write thank you letters for us! Overall, the event provided a warm, familyfriendly atmosphere to the everybody there, from the volunteers, to the people enjoying a fun Saturday with their family and friends!

AMAYzing Book Doctors, May On May 31st, celebrate the DCM! It will be May 30th from 2:45 end of the year/ term to PM - 5:15 PM at Servite High School! We will be holding a "Book Doctor" service project.

ICON 2015 This year’s ICON will take place in Indianapolis! Celebrate Kiwanis’ 100th Year with Key Clubbers from all over the world! More information can be found on Page 12!

The united force of the Kiwanis Family and UNICEF has aimed to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus that kills millions of mothers and their new born babies each and every year.

By October 2015, these organizations hoped to end MNT from the face of the Earth, but this is only possible with YOUR HELP. In the past few years, the Eliminate Project has erased MNT from over 20 countries, including China, Madagascar, Iraq, and Ghana! And recently, we have been able to eliminate MNT from Mauritania! With a dollar and 80 cents, we are able to save a mother and her child.

CNH Key Club has a set a goal to help eliminate this tragic disease for the Project Eliminate by October! Raising $3.7 million out of the $110 million, this is only possible if we get all of your support and make sure that this project is successful. Project Eliminate has many ways for you to get involved. Some ideas include: -Give away flower pots exchange for a donation.

-Raffling out a Key Club Sweater.

-Hosting a garage sale.

-Plan a Walk that donates it profits towards the project.

-Ask a local restaurant to hold a fundraiser with a profit going towards the Eliminate Project and so much more!

Celebrate Kiwanis’ 100th in Indy!

If ever there was a Kiwanis convention not to miss, this is it! Kiwanians from around the world will celebrate our 100th anniversary in Indianapolis this June. And we won’t be alone: Members of Circle K, Key Club and Aktion Club will all join us. Engage and exchange with fellow Kiwanians and other members of the Kiwanis family. Gather tools to use once you're back with your club. Come make history. And years from now, you’ll be able to say: I was there!

Taking place in Indianapolis this year, you can come and meet people from across the world! In addition to that, you will be able to voice your opinions and elect the new International Board.
