Its finally March! That means only about a month left until the final battle, APs, and then we are home free!

And as for the seniors, high school will finally be a thing of the past.

March is a time of appointed board applications-always a scary and exciting time. I remember when I was waiting on my call for bulletin editor in the 2013-2014 school year, and I was sick in bed with allergies when I was awoken via call to become OAKC's next editor. I was extremely excited, and should you be selected for an appointed board position, look forward to the future and all the exciting possibilities it has in store for you.

For such exciting news, I know that there is a flip side. Not being selected for something you worked so hard for is difficult. Even as I await college decisions, the thought of rejection dampens my spirit. Regardless, whether its a position or a college or a scholarship, just trust that things will right themselves eventually. I think that everything happens for a reason, and though that reason may not be clear now it will be later! They just end up leading you down different paths until you realize you've been one that has been right for you all along.

So as March finishes up, keep your head up (especially with those AP tests). Now for the quote of the month: "I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.

Delicious Ambiguity." -- Gilda Radner Things happen but how you evolve and change to it is what matters. I might add this is a great thing to think about for college essays ;). With that said, enjoy your spring break and be sure to join us for our bonding event!

Hey OA Key Clubbers, This is it! The last and final newsletter of the term. *cries* I can’t believe we made it this far. It’s so amazing. All you have grown someway— I know I did. This ride in the 2015-2016 term was more than I ever hoped for. And I can’t believe its all over soon.

From the start of my first newsletter, I had no idea what I was doing. It was complicate and hard to adjust to this new type of position that I didn’t know how to do. I spent forever trying to learn the functions to create lovely newsletters like the past bulletin editors. Luckily, I had the support of my family, friends, and Key Club Board. They all motivated me to do my best, and that pushed me to try my hardest. Without my friends and fellow members, especially John Hoang who supported me all the way, I wouldn't have discovered this new interest and passion.

This bulletin editor position changed me in a lot of ways. It first taught me how to manage my time and organize/prioritize my schedule. Though this newsletter take hours to make, I learned about the possibility of majoring in graphic designing and further building it in my future career path.

As a part of key club for almost three years, I definitely never regretted any of it. It was an eye opening experience and I hope to further continue this journey next year. To the seniors: Thank you for always help guide us to follow your footsteps. You all made a very influential impression on me that I’ll take with my final year a part of OAKC. You all are going to great in your future years to come and make sure to visit us!

Now that the month of March is closing to an end, I want to remind us all to always think positive. Even though the stress is overcoming you, the problems with family is piling over, and the extracurricular is hard to manage, it is important to always have a clear mind, take a deep breath, and smile.

With that note, it was a pleasure serving as you bulletin editor. I hope you enjoyed this newsletter and have a wonderful spring break!

February DCM is by far my favorite DCM! Key Clubbers from all over the division dedicated 6 hours on a Saturday to doing service projects targeted towards helping kids.

Oxford’s Key Club had more than 30 members attend the DCM, which was more attendance than any of the other clubs in the division. Even better, all the members said they had fun!

What I loved about this DCM is that all the members could participate in fun, crafty service projects while making new friends. There’s no better way to make new friends than by laughing at a flower you failed at drawing on a pair of booties or reading children’s picture books while cleaning them for Book Doctor.

Speaking of the service projects, the DCM had four rounds, each with its own service project that each school could rotate around to participate in. The four service projects: making baby blankets, painting drawings on baby booties, cleaning and packaging picture books, and making pinwheels. These service projects were super easy and let everyone be more free and expressive.

Even better, these service projects helped children. While participating in these service projects, I realized how many things I took for granted when I was younger. When I was younger, my biggest worry was convincing my mom to let me buy the newest toy. Yet, there’s babies and children who can’t even stay warm with blankets and booties or read books to exercise their imaginations because their parents can’t afford these resources.

This event did a good job summing up everything that’s great about Key Club: you get to have fun, meet new people, help the community, and learn lessons to better yourself.

There’s very few communities that can do all this at once.

ALMOST OVER This month, February's Division Council Meeting was, to say the least, nostalgic.

Buddy One Day at Fairmont Preparatory Academy helped me relive all the great memories I had of my final term over these past ten months. Although I came late, I was still able to experience some of the best parts; this included pizza, the Book Doctor, pinwheel construction, and blanket-making.

Bonding with the board members I have gotten to know so well over this past term was definitely one I continue to cherish. My time spent with each and every officer is valuable; I share memories with all of them that I hope to remember in the near future.

Furthermore, reliving each service project took me back to the experiences and memories I had during the original event.

Redoing the Book Doctor took me back to sitting in a library over the summer with my fellow Division 30 South members, wiping down books with Clorox and erasing pencil marks. Blanket making took me back to sitting at a bench with others members and individually tying each knot of the to-bedonation.

While I am sad that my term is finally ending, I am, however, excited to see the new executive and appointed officers within my club; I know that the future of this organization is in the right hands when I see all of their bright, sunny smiles, ready to serve.

A LOOK BACK 4:27 PM, Saturday, July 18, 2015.

It was a rainy afternoon when I got the call. I was working in my room when my phone rang.

“Emily Huynh,” it read. Never—at least, now that I recall—had I really spoken to Emily. Sure, I had e-mailed her maybe once, maybe twice about volunteer hours and about club t-shirts and sweaters. But I hadn’t become familiar enough with her for it make any sense that I had her phone number already in my contacts.

Nervous at first but wanting to sound confident, I picked up the phone. “Hi, Emily!” (I probably said that—some form of it, at least.)

“Hi, Carina! This is—oh, wait, you already know who this is!” She chuckled.

“Yeah!” I anxiously laughed.

I can’t tell you the rest. I’m not keeping it from you. I just don’t remember the exact details. But that’s all right. I don’t need to recount everything. All I know is from that day forward, I became a part of the OAKC board.

Now, before continuing, I think it’s necessary to clarify something, which might be obvious to some, but I’ll say it nevertheless to the Carina with preconceived notions: Being a part of something I’ve always wanted to be a part of doesn’t mean I’m going to like every second of it. It seems a bit odd to say—how could I be dissatisfied with getting what I wanted? Quite simply, the unexpected happens, new experiences appear, discomfort pursues, doubt settles in.

I don’t say this with resentment toward the 2015-2016 Key Club term. It’s hard to justify that being on board was the sole reason I was stressed. I’d actually even argue that the stress from Key Club prepared me for future stressful situations. Through Key Club, I’ve had opportunities to meet new people. Through Key Club, I’ve deepened my relationships with people. Through Key Club, I’ve become more willing to acknowledge people when we cross paths. Through Key Club, I’ve learned how one comment of encouragement can really ignite a person to reach for the seemingly impossible.

Key Club, with all its lessons, is not perfect, though. I, as a board member, am not perfect either. No one and no thing is perfect. But being imperfect isn’t a reason to give up hope, and it isn’t a reason to criticize. And I think that’s why I’m thankful for Key Club—in the midst of daily chaos, Key Club is there to accept me with my flaws and to encourage me to do better.

This term passed as a blur. Looking back on this past year, I’m feeling awfully nostalgic.

I can vividly retell my first general meeting during my freshman year. Tens upon tens of general members piled into the cramped, humid choir room. Over 150 members came to the meeting, so everyone was forced to sit on the ground as the spirited Nicolas Do (aka our IP President) introduced himself and the other board members. Sitting on the floor, eating my tuna sandwich, I didn’t think much of Key Club. The essential question on my mind was “So what’s up with that How do you feel cheer, and why are Key Clubbers so spirited?”

Over the year, the definition of spirit came to me. Going to all of these events, cheering our hearts out at races, seeing the smiles of those we helped, I understood its meaning. Spirit is about being supportive. Spirit is about showing your support for others in need. By attending the bi-monthly HOPE Food Distribution with positive attitudes, we are supporting local families in need. By cheering for runners at Angel’s Stadium at 6 AM, we are supporting research foundations. By simply wearing Key Club merchandise, we are supporting this organization.

The meaning of the infamous Key Club cheer goes deeper than what you think. When someone asks you, “How do you feel?”, they are asking you how do you feel about service. Key Club is not an average club that supplies high school students with college application fluff. Key Club is an extraordinary organization with an ACTUAL purpose of bettering our community and those in it.

To those overlooking Key Club, don’t. I’m grateful that I took a second chance on this club. I couldn’t have wished for a better club to be a part of. And I can’t wait to see what the next term has in store for us.

And so the waterworks begin [Insert those cute crying emojis here]. I can’t believe that it has already been a year since I was appointed as one of the Historians for the 20152016 term, but it’s even harder to believe that I have the opportunity to take my love for Key Club a step further by being elected as one of your Vice Presidents for the 20162017 term. Looking back at my past three years in Key Club, it’s incredibly hard to imagine that I could’ve reached the position that I’ve reached today. I remember starting off as a wee little freshman, volunteering with the sole intention of making it big in college.

The funny thing was that by the end of that year, I probably had close to zero hours. But by the end of that year, I went to the OAKC Car Wash, and that was the revolutionary moment that changed my entire Key Club career. I knew that I had to be a part of this fun group of people, to become immersed in a club that could make a difference while maintaining such a high degree of lightheartedness. So, I took a chance on my own skills and And since then, I’ve had zero regrets going in. Honestly, being accepted into Key Club board has made my high school experience so much richer, as the great times that I’ve had on the club perfectly balance out the stresses of junior year. If you are a freshman/sophomore reading this right now, I highly recommend that you take a leap of faith and apply for appointed board. I was really scared at first, but the experiences that I have gained through my time on board this term have incredibly impacted my high school life and have reaffirmed that applying for board was worth it. If you want to take your Key Club experience a step further, consider applying for board. Trust me, it’s worth the effort.

Can you believe that the term is finally coming to an end? Oh, how time flies by so fast! Because of this, OAKC is hosting our last bonding event of the term with a scavenger hunt at Downtown Disney on March 18th from 4-6:30!

Key Club has been a fundamental part of my high school experience. Whether it be from the crazy cheering at Fall Rally or the cold mornings at HOPE Food Distribution, I know that I will miss it all. But if there is one thing that I am going to miss the most, it is going to be the weekly experience of going through meetings, both board and general. These meetings are almost at times like a grind for me, but at the same time, I know that they have become such a routine thing for me that something is just going to feel odd without them.

As the terms coming to an end, I can't believe it's almost over. It's been 4 long years of being in Key Club in various positions, from historian to treasurer to division news editor, and I've learned so much that I wouldn't have learned elsewhere. 4 years almost seems to short, now that I think about it. I'll miss the people that I've met throughout the years including the Key Clubbers, Kiwanis members, and people I've met while volunteering. From the spirit battles to the early hours of volunteering, there's a lot to miss. Although volunteering in high school might be coming to an end, I can't wait to continue in college and forever remember my journey in Key Club!!

Key Club is a long journey, and everyone's will be different from another's. Ultimately what I will miss about Key Club is the busy schedule it gave me. Whether it was volunteering, Kiwanis meetings, DCMs, DLT meetings, basically every meeting ever, Key Club filled gaps in my schedule and I appreciate the way its helped me learn to time manage and work efficiently. In college I'll be filling those gaps with other clubs like EWH/SWE and internships, but Key Club helped me prepare for that.

Even though I've only been in Key Club for four years, I've made friends and had experiences that will last me a lifetime. What I'll miss most about Key Club are the friendly, spirited leaders and advisors who enable so many more volunteers to make an impact in their own communities.

District Convention is the annual gathering of members from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii to celebrate the end of the term!

What will you be doing there?

You will be installing and retiring all of the past term’s leaders! You will also get to see some workshops that will help you grow as a leader! You will be able to meet Key Clubbers from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii. In addition to all those amazing activities, you will also get to celebrate the end of the term with the Governor’s Ball!

Why should you go?

You should go to celebrate the end of the term and really experience why so many people fell in love with Key Club!

PTP otherwise known as Pediatric Trauma Prevention or Program is a project that the Kiwanis has been supporting for a very long time.

Did you know that Unintentional injury is the #1 killer among children under the age of 14? More than 90 percent of these injuries are preventable, however the only way that we can prevent these diseases is if we make a difference, one baby step at a time! Many of these injuries are caused by the lack of equipment or protection. When the Kiwanis International realized the need to decrease all of these accidental deaths, they created the Pediatric Trauma Program in 1994.

PTP is used to create and find programs to do many things. For example. PTP trains pediatric doctors, nurses, and first responders to specialize in childcare. In addition, PTP finds programs to purchase much needed pediatric medical equipment such as incubators for the newborns. It is also used to create and expand community outreach programs that teach the locals about the importance of helmets, seat belts, and playground safety, etc.

There are many ways that we can help PTP. We can sponsor service projects that revolve around topics such as bicycle safety.

We can also work with the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Miracle Network which helps out with PTP often. Recently, the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Miracle Network teamed up with Dairy Queen and iHOP in a fundraiser, where you can get their delicious food and help a cause all at the same time!

Nonetheless, we ourselves, can host fundraisers so we are able to donate towards this crucial cause. This is only possible if we get every involved with the project. And it all starts with you. If you are free, come and help as much as you can!

Pediatric Trauma Program 25

March is This monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Spotlight on service is March of Dimes.

Premature death is a very serious and common problem. Every day, 1 in 8 babies born in the U.S. arrives too soon. This monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focus is on March of Dimes. March of Dimes is a wonderful organization that strives to help moms have full-term pregnancies and give birth to healthy babies.

Through donations this organization is able to spread awareness, provide comfort and further research regarding the health of babies.
