President’s Corner Hello Sunshines!

Hope your summer breaks have been going well! Be sure to enjoy this time off from school and rest up; you deserve it! Personally, I'll be catching up on sleep, trying new food places, and hanging out with friends before starting on the whirlwind that is college applications. But don't forget to stay active in Key Club! What better way to spend your break is there than volunteering with amazing people in your community? Concerts on the Green, St. Irenaeus Festival, and Relay for Life are just some of the volunteer opportunities that we have planned for y'all this summer, so stay tuned for our weekly updates. We'll be having events not just on weekends but also throughout the week, so be sure to come on out! I really recommend that you try to make it out to as many of these events as possible. Some of my best memories from Key Club are from summer events and DCMs; there's something about being free from the stresses of school that makes volunteering that much more liberating. But don't forget to stay active in Key Club! What better way to spend your break is there than volunteering with amazing people in your community? Editor’s Note Heyo~ Time and time again, these summers have been memorable, to say the very least. Recently, I’ve been bettering myself; I’ve been keeping up with my language studies, I’ve been waking up at 6AM constantly, I’ve been hanging out with friends off and online, and I have just been having a fantastic time during this summer. This is because of what I’ve learned over the course of multiple summers; time doesn’t wait for anybody. It is the easiest thing in the world to watch those days flicker by, and as of June 6th, there are only 62 days until the school grind begins. Managing to stay productive and on your toes during this summer is crucial, and I hope you all are doing what you think is best with your time because we all have a finite amount of it. There is so much things you can do: you can volunteer at the following events as seen in the Key Club emails (shameless plug), you can roam our key club web site(another shameless plug), and you could talk to the 2017-2018 OAKC board about what we can do for you (I sincerely can do this all day). Spend your time sleeping, learning, and moving forward, because that is the only path you should be doing, because as a generation filled with promise and limitless boundaries, we are only left with moving in front of us. Being the editor of this grandiose club has made a mark on my life whether I like it or not, and has really shaped me with how I feel about certain matters and how I respond to the changes in environment around me. I hope you come to the St. Ireneus Festival by the way, since it is an experience that is always worth your time. :)

mixed together to bring a night full of fun, laughter, and reminiscing about the 2016-2017 term. We cheered on Huda’s rapping, fought to answer Alvin’s trivia questions, and awww’d together over sweet love box notes: new friendships were made, and old ones reinforced.

Banquet was also a bit sad, as it was the last official goodbye to all of the OAKC seniors. Seeing them get up to talk about their experiences through the years in Key Club was both awe-inspiring and emotional; I’ve looked up to them for the past three years, and with them gone, it’s now up to us to step up and fill the gap that they’ve left behind. Shoutout to all of them: thank you for being our role models, mentors, and friends. I’ll miss you when you go off to college, but I hope we can make you proud.

elicious entrées and pies, senior speeches, photo booths, Finding Dory skit, slideshow— these are just a few of the many highlights of this years’ OAKC banquet. This year was my second time attending Oxford’s club banquet and I honestly thought it was a fun and memorable experience for everyone: from freshmen to seniors, and from officers to general members.

Honestly, the part that I found to be most interesting were the senior speeches. Fortunately, I was able to get to know most of the seniors this year, so I listened to their speeches with a sense of awe and a source of inspiration. Even as a freshman and sophomore, however, I always enjoyed listening to the senior speeches because they were the one’s who had completed their Key Club journey’s, and were vulnerable enough to stand

place was no better than anywhere else because of one thing: the seniors. They were the entire reason we were here, and were the anchor of this club for so long.

The first thing I noticed when I walked into the banquet room was the abundant amount of seniors. Many of them didn’t go to meetings, but when I saw Matthew, Alvin and Jessica praise them, I began to understand the tightly knit family that was created by years of bonding.

That is something I sincerely hope to create, and with the people I got to sit next to and the food we shared together, I feel as if we're already creating that special feeling once more. It was quite the time; I got to act as Crush from Nemo for our well-prepared script, and had a great time with the messages be thrown at the seniors, both good and bad. It was my first ever banquet for OAKC, and hope the rest will be just as memorable. in front of an audience of faces, new and old, sharing their experiences, advice, and appreciation about a club that impacted their life. While working behind the scenes to plan banquet this year was somewhat stressful, I knew it was worth it when I saw everyone laughing and smiling together over Vina’s mispronunciation of “Marlin” or the funny-looking photos in the slideshow.

I highly encourage you all to come to next year’s banquet. You definitely won’t forget the special memories that you make at this event!

OC Marathon

A

fter a month into my term, I am able to completely acknowledge how much time and dedication it takes to be a good Key Club board member. Throughout this month, with AP testing and finals taking up a lot of my attention, I found it a bit difficult to balance all of my extracurriculars and studies at the same time. With a little bit of time management, however, I was still able to attend multiple events and leave some time to study as well. This month, I was able to go to the OC Marathon, which was a division event this year that took place from 4AM to around 9AM. Although us Key Clubbers were up and about before the sun was even up (I was ready to start my day at 3 in the morning while some people were just getting into bed), it was a great experience because we were able to get to know people from other schools and bond over the same feeling of tiredness and sleepiness in the cold weather. Division events are a lot of fun because there’s always a lot more people attending and you get to meet someone new every time, or in my experience at least. The OC Marathon was definitely a highlight of this month, and I would 10/10 recommend everyone attend as many division events as possible. I’m excited to see what the month of June will bring :)

aking up at 2AM isn’t something that I do on the norm. Actually, it isn’t something that anyone does constantly. But, more than 100 people managed to do that for OC Marathon.

At around 2:30AM, two OC marathon shuttles pulled into the park. Everyone was excited to get to the actual location of the marathon, rather than stand around, shivering in the cold. The shuttles began to take volunteers in 12 at a time. Most people went with volunteers from the same home club, and people began to pile into the shuttles.

I remember, distinctly, around 20 minutes after the first shuttle left the park, Anjika told us that her friends texted saying that they were actually getting dropped off individually along the highway. Vivian, Samantha, Mai-Vy, Anjika, and I began to plot how we would find our way back to each other after getting dropped off. As we drove along the marathon track, volunteers started to leave the shuttle one by one. At this time, the sky was still dark, the air was chilly, and we were still drowsy from only getting around 4 hours of sleep. Eventually it was my turn to get dropped off, and Samantha and I left the vehicle together, because our stations were only a short distance apart. Anjika, who was dropped off around a mile away from us, decided to run the distance. Soon, the five of us were reunited again, taking refuge next to a house to hide from the now sprinkling rain.

By 6, the rain had cleared up, and we were positioned along the side of the track. Runners began to show up, and we cheered for them, motivating them to go on. Many of the runners were happy to see us, and even flashed us a smile or a thumbs up as they passed by. Time passed quickly because we were cheering our hearts out and encouraging the runners to finish the marathon. Despite the initial weather, OC Marathon was a very successful event and one that I wouldn’t mind waking up at 2AM for again.

Memorial Pancake Breakfast

I

t was Saturday morning, and I was up 8am, ready to serve the community once more. This time, it was a pancake breakfast. I got to help serve pancakes and other foods including sausages and orange juice. It was like a breakfast for a baseball game. Although I was felt very dead and tired in the morning, the event brightened and made my morning livelier. There were many kids running around. The atmosphere was just so full of happiness and festivity. Here, I got to meet and talk to Kiwanis members. That was really nice and I would definitely come out to an event like this again. I had a great time and got to bond with my fellow Key Clubber.

ver since I joined Key Club in the fall of 2015, pancake breakfast has remained my most favorite event of all time. I remember it as the first volunteering event in Key Club, and of course, it was all about pancakes. It was really early in the morning so I was sleepy and unwilling, but nonetheless, I got up and moved passed my laziness. Since it was my first event, I was also really nervous and introverted and really was unsure of what to do.

However, once I started to working at the drink station, all those feelings went away.

The people I met that day were really friendly and open and I felt encouraged to

volunteer even more. I was really happy to see the smiling faces of the customers as ihanded them their drinks. Part of the reason why I love to volunteer at these pancake breakfasts so much is because of those interactions. Pancake breakfasts give volunteers the opportunity to mingle with the Kiwanis Club and community, and I believe it’s that feeling of interaction that really makes volunteering worth much more than a number to gain.
