LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN For the past 60 years, REHAB has touched the lives of so many people in Hawaii and around the world. Whether we taught your dad how to walk and swallow again after a stroke or cared for your friend after their car accident, REHAB has rebuilt the lives of your family, friends and neighbors following a serious injury or illness.

The expense, logistics of mainland care and lack of a support system, makes it difficult for many of our Hawaii ohana to seek treatment outside of Hawaii when these serious events occur. We are fortunate that REHAB allows us to remain in Hawaii to receive the best rehabilitation care. Not only do we employ the largest staff of highly skilled rehabilitation specialists, we have also invested in securing the latest in cutting edge technology for optimal care. Some of the technologies include a robotic exoskeleton that can help individuals with severe spinal cord injuries walk again, a bionic leg and anti-gravity treadmill that speeds the recovery of patients with disabilities ranging from stroke to athletic injuries. We also recently added new technology to aid in teaching people to swallow again.

We have created numerous specialized programs ranging from cardiac rehab to wounded veterans to a dedicated women’s program to meet our community’s needs. By 2015, REHAB will have completed its much needed interior renovations; our revitalized building will reflect the innovative, state-of-the-art programs and services that we already offer.

Yes, there’s outstanding expertise, technology and now space, but the most important asset in bringing the best care is the staff at REHAB. There are 28 hospitals in Hawaii, but only one that specializes in rehabilitation.

REHAB is the only free standing hospital in the Pacific Rim that treats those who have gone through a serious injury or illness such as a stroke or car accident. Our 80-bed inpatient hospital and three outpatient clinics throughout Hawaii treated more than 6,100 patients last year. Without REHAB, patients and their families would have to travel over 2,500 miles to receive the same level of intensive therapy care.

REHAB started providing services to the community from Quonset huts six decades ago.

Today, REHAB has a capital campaign under way to raise $17.2 million to support the renovation of the facility. The contributions are being used to upgrade the facility, add family rooms, healing gardens, transitional apartment rooms, specialized patient rooms and expand programs to include a vision center, speech and communication center, driver’s evaluation and

rehabilitation programs, new clinical programs and enhancements to improve patient safety and comfort.

“This renovation brings Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific in line with modern and best practices, as well as providing healthcare that meets advancing patient expectations,” said Timothy J. Roe, MD MBA, president and chief executive officer of REHAB. “We are finding that patients need more and more medical management at REHAB

as a result of their shortened acute care hospital stays.”

The renovation of the second, third and fourth floors have been completed under the supervision of the gen-

eral contractor, J Kadowaki Inc., and architect Jeff Mori of Arthur Y. Mori and Associates.

The lobby and surrounding areas are scheduled to be complete in 2015.

THE BRAIN’S ABILITY TO REWIRE SPARKS REHABILITATION ADVANCES

F

or decades, people thought that the human brain is essentially hardwired — so set, in fact, that by the time we reach adulthood we are stuck with what we have.

This “fact” lowered expectations about the value of rehabilitation for adults who suffered brain damage from a stroke or other causes.

But research in the past few years has overthrown this idea.

We now know that the adult brain has the power of neuroplasticity — the ability to change its structure and function in response to experience.

In short, it can rewire itself!

This newfound knowledge, coupled with advances in neurorobotics, has fundamentally changed rehabilitation medicine and given hope to countless people. Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB) is at the forefront of these advances, thanks to the work being done within the Robison Family Inno-

vation Center at the Nu‘unanu Outpatient Clinic.

REHAB launched the Robison Family Innovation Center in 2011 to begin incorporating breakthrough technologies and methodologies. One of these is the bionic leg. It is a wearable, battery-powered, robotic mobility assistance device activated by the patient’s intent to move.

REHAB’s physical therapists use it for patients with impaired mobility to strengthen their stance, improve their gait and enhance active motor learning while protecting the patient.

The Alter-G (formerly Tibion) Bionic Leg recently won the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2013 Invention and Entrepreneurship Award in Robotics and Automation for being “a breakthrough product for rehabilitation of stroke patients at an affordable price.” A bionic arm

by Myomo adds similar breakthrough technology.

The most used new equip-

ment at REHAB is the Alter-G Anti-Gravity Treadmill. Originally developed for NASA astronauts, the device allows people to run or walk at 100 to 20 percent of their body weight. This allows anyone from recovering athletes with lower limb injuries to Parkinson’s disease patients to get aerobic exercise and increase their strength with much less pressure on joints and muscles.

In some cases, neuro robotics is even providing hope where none was there before.

In 2011, REHAB was selected as one of 10 leading rehabilitation hospitals to partner with Ekso Bionics (formerly Berkeley Bionics) to conduct investigational trials on Ekso™ — a bionic suit, or exoskeleton, that enables individuals with lower extremity paralysis to stand up and walk. REHAB is now one of the few rehab centers in the world offering the program for the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury patients in

Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. Ekso™ was named CNN’s “Top 10 Innovations of 2010” and Time’s “50 Best Innovations of 2010.”

“I forgot, after 18 years (in a wheelchair), what it was like to walk again. It is so exciting,” said Chris Greer, one of eight Hawaii residents who participated in trials for Ekso™.

Spurred by these scientific advances, REHAB has introduced new programs including advanced Stroke Recovery Center, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Women’s Rehab Center, and a senior drivers’ safety program, which uses technology to evaluate driving-related abilities.

REHAB also partnered with the VA Pacific Island Healthcare System to offer our “Back to Life” program, an innovative pain reduction and rehabilitation program that meets the complex needs of our soldiers returning from overseas deployment using clinical pilates.

Patient Profile:

JOHN GREER John Greer stood and walked for the first time in decades with the aid of REHAB’s Ekso Bionic suit. He is one of eight Hawaii residents participating in the investigational trials.

John was injured 29 years ago in a car accident resulting in a spinal cord injury, which left his lower body paralyzed. He is an athlete, a Para Olympian, who represented the United States on the men’s Para Olympic tennis team in Athens in 2004. He was also on the first paraplegic outrigger canoe team in the Molokai ‘Hoe. “It has been intense, and at the same time empowering, to finally be able to stand on my own and look someone directly in the eyes,” John stated.

A Program That Does YOUR HEART GOOD

N

umerous patients undergo heart procedures, only to have more complications down the line.

But REHAB has a service that can help — cardiac rehabilitation. Cardiac health programs provide education and counseling services on physical fitness, nutrition, psychological heath and overall information on how to reduce the risk of future heart problems. They also allow time for good habits to form.

Patients are supervised and monitored during their exercise, allowing them to test their limits in safety. There are specially trained nurses, exercise physiologists and physicians involved in the programs. At REHAB we also include physical therapists, occupational therapists,

nutritionists and psychologists to ensure a complete cardiac health program.

Participants in cardiac rehab programs can have a 25 to 30 percent reduction in fatal heart events. A recent report from the Mayo Clinic suggests that participation in a structured cardiac rehab program can reduce cardiac mortality by as much as 45 percent.

At REHAB, we have observed marked improvements in clinical and behavioral outcomes from our currently active patients, including reduced hypertension, body weight and improved physical activity and exercise habits. Many patients in the program have reduced, or are completely off their blood pressure and pain medications.

With these kinds of results it

is vital for people to be aware of cardiac rehab programs. Both the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology recommend the pro-

grams to increase the chance of survival following a cardiac event and using cardiac rehab as a secondary prevention tool.

However, studies show 70

to 80 percent of eligible heart disease patients in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom do not receive cardiac rehabilitation after hospital

Its foundation is alignment and strengthening of the body’s core — specifically, the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and the back. As core strength increases,

Fifteen-year-old Meghan Mung Lim was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome when she came to REHAB. “It’s a syndrome, not a disease. It’s curable,” she said.

Meghan was at home recovering from a cold when she first experienced a numbing sensation in her legs. As it got worse she was rushed to the emergency room and the physician recognized her symptoms as Guillain-Barre.

She was admitted to REHAB in a wheelchair, barely able to move her muscles or perform a simple handshake. The therapists found ways to make therapy fun whether it was playing the Nintendo Wii or taking her out shopping as a form of recreational therapy. The staff did everything they could to get Meghan ready to get back to her “normal” life as a teenager. And after just two weeks she was out of her wheelchair and walking with only the minimal assistance of crutches.

Currently a high school student, Meghan has some sage words of advice: “Be thankful for everything that you have. It’s the little things that make a big difference.”

Family members/caregivers go through a Caregiver Education Training course before the patient goes home. Through the training courses, they learn skills and techniques that they will be able to use after they leave the hospital to allow them to become as independent as possible.

DAWNA ZANE Dawna Zane is a woman who has been through a lot, but is ready to take on more. As a Kalani High School senior, she was in a devastating car accident that severed her spinal cord and left her paralyzed from the chest down. Determined to get her life back, she worked hard with the staff and therapists at REHAB. Dawna received her master’s degree in counseling and recently started working at Abilities Unlimited. She lives a very active lifestyle — paddling often and has even begun training for the Honolulu Marathon, again. “I went to REHAB for therapy. But, it is here where I regained my dignity,” Dawna said.

Dr. Timothy J. Roe became President and Chief Executive Officer of the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB) in 2012. He is responsible for developing an organizational vision, implementing strategic and operating plans to ensure quality services, growth, financial viability, program and human resource development and community benefit.

He also oversees all day-to-day operations of the hospital.

Here is what Dr. Roe had to say about REHAB’s vital role within the community:

What type of patients do you treat at REHAB Hospital?

Our two largest inpatient categories are individuals who have experienced a stroke and orthopedic patients who are recovering from surgery or a traumatic injury. They represent 32 percent and 27 percent of our admissions, respectively. Other prevalent diagnoses that we see are spinal cord injuries, brain injuries or anyone with other neurological issues such as GuillainBarre syndrome. We also help people who have had amputations or are generally de-conditioned from other types of health issues.

There have been a lot of changes over the past 60 years. What are some of the changes you have seen in the way you treat patients at your hospital?

I can’t speak for all of the last 60 years, of course, but there have been significant changes in rehabilitation. One big change is the increasing appreciation of the benefits of rehabilitation in treating patients with “non-traditional” diagnoses. While we still treat many patients with orthopedic or neurologic disorders, there is increasing evidence of the benefits of rehabilitation for patients with

functional impairment due to cancer, cardiac, pulmonary and other conditions. REHAB also is offering a greater array of high-tech treatment approaches to augment our high-touch therapy services.

Why should patients come to REHAB? Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific is the only provider of acute inpatient rehabilitation in the State of Hawaii. We offer a full range of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, featuring a physician-led, teambased approach. REHAB ranks among the best

rehabilitation hospitals in the country on many of the quality standards that we follow. We practice evidence-based medicine and benchmark our outcome with the rest of the country.

BACK Behind the Wheel Drivers Rehabilitation Specialist Kim Youn works with a REHAB patient on the Driver’s Simulator.

The Driver’s Program at REHAB at Nuuanu is available to evaluate a person’s current driving ability, assess driving potential and often enable the person to return to safe, independent driving.

Driver rehabilitation may be beneficial whenever a medical condition causes limited func-

tion. Services are provided by physical and occupational therapists, who are trained in the evaluation and treatment of visual, physical, sensory and cognitive/ perceptual dysfunctions that impair driving. Assistance with vehicle modification is also a part of the program.

The program is not just for

patients, but also evaluates and trains seniors, teaching them driving techniques to compensate for the impact of aging, understand risks and precautions based on their evaluation, and customize an auto and driving plan for the senior.

CREATING

he Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation established the Creative Arts Program in 1994 through generous funding from Louis Vuitton Hawaii. The program was designed to inspire and promote creativity through painting and ceramics while patients learn to cope with their new abilities.

Patients benefit from the creative process by identifying challenges, learning to adapt with new skills and developing proficiency with their abilities.

Since its inception, more than 700 patients have benefitted from over 70,000 art sessions. Program participants are current or former patients of REHAB who are recovering from neurological injury or illness including, but not limited to, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury or stroke.

Each year REHAB hosts its Art from the Heart event, which is an art sale and ex-

hibition featuring work from the Creative Arts Program. The event is held at the hospital and is free and open to the community. Proceeds from the sale help to offset the costs associated with the program, including professional art instructors, canvas, paints, brushes and other supplies.

Artwork ranges in price from $20 to $2,500 for each unique piece.

Join us for this year’s event on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., at REHAB Hospital.

Patient Profile:

KURT TATEISHI As a young man, Kurt Tateishi had many active hobbies, including throwing pottery. But one day while at work, he was struck in the head with a steel beam and fell 15 feet from a ladder. He arrived at REHAB using a walker and thought his recovery was over.

He unconditionally shares his talents with the patients of REHAB as well. Earlier this year, Kurt helped to start REHAB’s ceramics program for patients, which takes place every Wednesday afternoon.
