Hello all! I hope that this article finds you all well. We’ve finally entered our busy season. With Jr. Young Talent, Young Talent, Youth Arts Month, and the million other things we have on our plate. So, everyone, take a deep breath and let’s get after it. This is such an important time in our programs where we get to advocate for our students and our schools. I also encourage you to seek those in your district, community, or area to have them join OAEA so that they to, have the chance to advocate to their students and programs. NAEA National Convention is coming up March 7-10 and even better the early bird registration has been extended to Feb. 18th. Let’s have a great showing of Oklahoma attendees in Ft. Worth this year. I’m sure you have already all read the news article in The Washington Post, by Katherine Frey. Katherine says, “the importance to train more teachers in the arts, given the current obsession with science, math, technology and engineering (STEM), but goes on to the emphasis, as spoken by many, to change this format to (STEAM), science, math, technology, engineering, and ART.“ Why Art? Why should it be included in (STEM)? We all know a million reasons but Katherine goes on to mention Lisa Phillips, author of “The Artistic Edge: 7 Skills Children Need to Succeed in an Increasingly Right Brain World,” Lisa Phillips list 10 skills children learn from the arts. Our students learn creativity, confidence, problem solving, perseverance, focus, non-verbal communication, constructive feedback, collaboration, dedication, and accountability. Not that the current (STEM) plan does not include these things, but we as Art teachers, shouldn’t be seen any lesser. We aren’t always just creating pretty things, we are creating the future. Aurdrey Oaks, retired Art Educator, passed away January 26, 2013 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. She was born in Jamestown, NY and attended Buffalo State University College for Teachers, where she graduated with a BS in Art Education. She started teaching in the Attica, NY School System while earning a MS in Art Ed. from the University of Wisconsin. In Stillwater, Oklahoma, Audrey became Assist Professor of Art at Oklahoma State University and earned her Ed. D. Retiring in 1990 she was active in the Payne County Retired Assn., OSU Emeriti Assn., OAEA and NAEA. Audrey received many awards for her work in Art Education and will be remember fondly by all those she was a mentor to!! Memorials can be made to the Percy & Mable Macey Oaks Endowed Memorial Art Education Scholarship, Oklahoma State University. Submitted by: Rosemary Burke-Carroll

OAEA Newsletter Article from Bob Curtis, Awards Chair Do you know an art teacher who is doing an outstanding job? Have you been inspired by the efforts of some art teacher you know? If you can say “yes” to either of these questions, please nominate them for an award. Now is not too early since everyone is still in school and communication is easier. Awards in Oklahoma are given at the Fall Conference in September. The absolute deadline for nominations is August 15, 2013.
The objectives of the OAEA Awards Program are:
• To recognize excellence in the many outstanding individuals in our state; • To focus professional attention on quality art education and exemplary art educators; • To increase public awareness of the importance of quality art education; • To set standards for quality art education and how they can be achieved; and • To provide tangible recognition of achievement, earn respect of colleagues, and enhance professional opportunities for OAEA members.
An awards packet consists of the following: Total of six pages 1. Nomination Form (one page) 2. Nomination Letter (one page) 3. Vita Form (two pages written by the nominee) 4. Two letters of recommendation from others who know the nominee 5. Photo of the nominee

Two of Oklahoma's own will be receiving National Awards from NAEA at this year's convention in Dallas. Donna Barnard will be receiving the Western Region Secondary Art Educator Award and Susan Gabbard will be receiving a Distinguished Service Award. Congratulations Ladies, you make us proud.
We would love for all of you to join us at the Capitol on Tuesday, March 12th for Youth Arts Day.
This is not only a great opportunity for us to show support for the Fine Arts in Oklahoma but to also make a strong case for support of the Visual Arts as well. Don't miss this opportunity to shake some lawmakers hands, pass out letters to them and let them know the importance of arts programs in our schools and communities.
We would also like to encourage all of the elementary educators to participate in our door hanger activity. These door hangers will be used to advocate for the Visual Arts during Youth Arts Day. We just wanted to remind all of you that this year's State Superintendent's Elementary Showcase will run from March 1st through March 28th. The Youth Arts Month award ceremony will be held on the closing day of the Elementary Showcase in the Hodge Building onthe Capitol grounds at 2:00 p.m. Finally, for any of you interested in helping we will be hanging the Elementary Showcase on Feb 28th. February’s Oklahoma Art Educator of the Month is Stephanie Miller. Stephanie teaches art at Elk City High School. Her classes include Art I, II, III and IV. After graduating high school from Clinton, Stephanie graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with an Art Education degree in 2005. She has been employed at Elk City for seven years. Stephanie has also cosponsored the Elk City United Methodist Youth Group with her husband for three years. Stephanie is always looking for ways to improve her teaching methods and provide opportunity for her students.

The University of Oklahoma will host Young Talent in Oklahoma 2013 in the Lightwell Gallery in the School of Art & Art History. The Young Talent in Oklahoma Mission is: To discover, encourage and enable young artist to continue their art education at the post secondary level by providing scholarships and awards, as well as a juried exhibition for high school art students. The Purpose: To promote every Oklahoma secondary art program through gallery style exhibition honoring with celebration our diverse and talented young artists. Description
A brilliant crowd of high school art students filled the halls of the Oklahoma Museum of Art on January 18. They came bearing packages, portfolios, iPods full of artwork representing the work they had completed. They formed long lines as they hurried to the tables where the representatives of art departments were stationed in the two large rooms. The students were able to discuss their future plans and their artwork from 10:00 until 2:30. This was the annual Oklahoma Portfolio Day sponsored by the Oklahoma Art Education Association. Students were able to talk with representatives from the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma State University, East Central University, St. Gregory’s, Oral Roberts University, University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, Memphis College of Art, and School of Art Institute of Chicago. The over 225 students came from Oklahoma City areas of Bethany, Bethel, Putnam City, Harding Fine Arts, and Edmond high schools, Moore high schools. Some students came from areas across the state close to the Colorado border while others came from Plainview, Wayne, Newkirk, Guthrie, Turpen, Jenks, Elgin and Tulsa. The art students were able to view the entire museum free, seeing the permanent exhibitions which included the Chichuly—always a favorite. Schools were also able to apply for the bus grant. Tours were given to large groups by Bryan Chambers, a gifted part of the museum staff. Some groups were led by knowledgeable docents.
