Hajichi is a traditional ritual that was practiced by Ryūkyūan women for centuries before being banned under Japanese colonization. Much like with languages and traditions, certain regions and islands have their own unique hajichi.

Hiromi Toma will talk about

the Okinawan community in Brazil, her identity journey, and becoming a hajichi artist. Since 2021, Toma has tattooed 96 Okinawans in her home country using traditional techniques. There will also be a LIVE hajichi tattooing demonstration!

Toma is the director of the Okinawa Association of Brazil

(Associação Okinawa Kenjin do Brasil) and co-founded “Shimanchu nu Mōashibi,” an annual Okinawan cultural summit in Campo Grande. In addition to presenting at the OAA, she has scheduled hajichi sessions with local Okinawans in Vancouver, Washington, and California.

An OAA youth member was selected to participate in this year’s Uchinaa Junior Study Program (sponsored by the Okinawa Prefectural Government) set to take place

in the summertime.

After 2 years of the program being strictly online due to the pandemic, this year’s will be partially online via Zoom and partially in Okinawa.

HAISAI, EVERYONE! 会長の挨拶

HAISAI! Welcome everyone as we transition from Spring into Summer. Hopefully, the current weather patterns will continue and we will not have another long, dry summer but rather a cooler summer with some rain. As the winter snow thaws our rivers and water reserves will continue to grow! Welcome also to the transition from the COVID-19 pandemic to our “new normal”. We continue to be careful, but have removed most of the requirements for our indoor and outdoor events.

I have some great news: our California State Assemblymember, Al Muratsuchi, has honored the Okinawa Association of America, Inc. as the California Nonprofit Organization of the Year from District 66. Our Executive Director, Yuko Yamauchi, and I visited our State Capital in Sacramento to receive the award at their awards luncheon on Wednesday, June 7. We were warmly received by Assemblymember Muratsuchi, his office staff and the CalNonprofits organization. The award certificate was beautifully framed and will be proudly displayed in our new library for all of our members and our community to enjoy.

As summer approaches, we are planning more events for our members and community to enjoy our Uchinaanchu culture, food and spirit. Please see our newsletters, emails and social media for announcements,

including an Irei no Hi seminar, our annual picnic and others.

I want to thank our Executive Director, Yuko Yamauchi, and our office staff, Joey Kamiya, for continuing to work hard to meet all the responsibilities the OAA has.

Finally, I want to thank all our supporters for continuing to support the OAA. Our sole goal is to continue our mission of promoting the Okinawan culture for the benefit of our members.

KOOIMUN & COMMUNITY AT THE OAA CRAFT FAIR 概要：クラフト・フェーア

On April 29th, we hosted our 4th Annual Craft Fair in the OAA Center’s parking lot for an afternoon of kooimun (shopping) and community! 15 vendor tables with over 20 individual creators excitedly shared their accessories, art prints, bags, ceramics, clothing, hats, postcards, scarves, stickers, and more. Additionally, there were tables for OAA merchandise, plants, snacks, white elephant and used books sales, and milk tea with kurujaataa (Okinawan black sugar) boba from OKO Café.

College student Melissa Oshiro Tran has organized our craft fair every year since 2018, with the goal of sharing and exploring Okinawan culture through art. After being canceled in 2020 and 2021, the event returned in 2022 as a springtime outdoor event that attracted many more visitors than before. This year’s was also outdoors, with over 460 people joining us throughout the day!

A huge thank you to Crenshaw Doors and Windows (crenshawdoorsandwindows.com) for allowing use of their parking lot again this year for vendors and OAA volunteers! (Volunteers listed after Japanese article)

DO YOU LIKE BOOKS?

I have a confession - I DO! I LOVE BOOKS! Libraries (and bookstores) have always been a secret favorite place to hang out throughout my life.

Libraries are an important source of valuable information, and entertainment, too. The OAA Charles M. & Yoshiko Kamiya Library is the only known repository in the continental U.S. to focus on Okinawan history, culture and diaspora. For that reason, I am excited for the work that is being done currently so that our membership and the surrounding community can access it. We are lucky to have Monica Solis, OAA’s resident librarian, who has a Master’s in Library and Information Science.

Our current transition to a new office/library space makes this the perfect opportunity to catch up on library work. We are in very urgent need of volunteers who can help document and catalog our Japanese language materials, as well as some of our recently acquired donated books in English. Even an hour of helping to input English and Japanese language titles into the database would go a long way to organizing our precious library. Training will be available for all volunteers. No experience necessary.

この夏に開催されるウチナー・ジュニア・ スタディ・プログラムに北米沖縄県人会から 1名が選ばれ参加することになりました。

パンデミックのためプログラムは2年間 完全にオンラインだったが、今年は一部が Zoomを介してオンラインで、そして後の一 部は沖縄で行われる予定です。

14歳のメロディー大城さんは、サンディー 大城さんのご息女で、California School of the Arts - San Gabriel校の10年生になり ます。彼女は、ウチナーンチュ3世で、2019 年に初めて開催されたOAAの「キャンプ・ワ ラビ」、子供向けサマープログラムに参加し ました。昨年のバーチャル・ウチナー・ジュニ ア・スタディ・プログラムにも参加しました。

UCHINAAGUCHI LESSONS (#37)

Uchinaa (沖縄) means the entire area of Okinawa prefecture, including Miyako and Yaeyama islands. Uchinaanchu ( 沖縄 人) means people who inhabit the entire islands. Shimanchu (島人) means people who live in smaller areas, such as cities, towns, and villages (usually referring to villages).

FUJIN-BU NEW YEAR’S LUNCHEON 婦人部の親睦会

Greetings to all as we welcome Usajidushi (the Year of the Rabbit)! After 3 long years we are once again able to have fun and fellowship with old and new friends. On February 18 at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI) Nisei Veterans Memorial Hall, our celebration began with greetings from our OAA President Edward Kamiya and Emcees Brian Arakaki and Emily Ishii. Ethel Asato led us in a moment of silence as we remembered those who are no longer with us but are still in our thoughts and hearts. Chogi Higa explained why the rabbit is an important animal in the Lunar calendar as it signifies hope, patience and new beginnings. These are qualities that we all need to exercise in our daily life.

Floral bouquets were presented to our outgoing Chairperson, Mieko Shima, and to Joan Oshiro, the new Chair. Former Chairpersons were recognized as well: Helene Shimane, Ethel Asato, Shigeko Yamauchi, Kimiko Goya, Mieko Shima (Miyako Kinjo and Tomiko Akamine were not present).

Miyagi-ryu Nosho-kai dancers Itsumi Jacomo, Chiemi Kinjo, and Hiroko Ikemiya entertained us with beautiful, traditional Okinawan dances. Miyagi-ryu Toyomukai dancers Yoko Kono, Janet Dixon, Keiko Giles, and Megumi Tyson also demonstrated the gracefulness of Okinawan buyou. Minyou songs filled the room with Afuso-ryu Koten Ongaku Kenkyuu Choichi Kai L.A. Chapter led

by Ryan Nakamatsu with members Yuko Yamauchi, Kyle Yamaoka, Aimee Buday, Joey Kamiya, Steve Matsumoto, and Kim Kobashigawa. More upbeat minyou songs were performed by Ishihara Haruo Ryukyu Minyo Kenkyusho members Yoshiaki Chinen, Tysai Hamagawa, and Misa Furugen. Also on stage were our own OAA talented karaoke singers Chogi Higa, Setsuko Fujimoto, and Darrel “DJ” Neal. The grand finale was the always popular Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko L.A. Branch led by Stephanie Ajifu with new members Emma, Nina, and Lana Clarke, Wesley and William Vanna, Taryn Berge, Kaitlyn Tabata, and Mia Reese. Yoshiaki, Tysai, and Misa of Ishihara Minyo provided music for the lively atchamee/kachaashii finale.

Our program was possible because of our devoted hard working Fujin-bu volunteers who also donated the many door prizes and goody bags. A big thanks to the students from UC Santa Cruz’s Okinawa Memories Initiative (OMI) who displayed their on-going photo archiving project with photos from the Haruo Yamashiro Family. The delicious lunch was catered by Pablo Arakaki, owner of Ladybug Café, who also generously donated a case of face masks so that each attendee received a box. A special thank you to Chogi Higa for the kind words in the Japanese section of the March 23 issue of the Rafu Shimpo. Ippee nifee deebiru (thank you very much) to everyone who came to

加者のみなさんが買い物などで賑わい楽し いイベントとなりました。15のテーブルと20 以上の出展者でした。彼らはアクセサリー、 絵画、バッグ、陶器、洋服、帽子、ポストカー ド、スカーフ、ステッカーなどたくさんのオリ ジナルの出展品をシェアしました。たくさん の沖縄をテーマにした手作り品がありまし た。その上、北米沖縄県人会オリジナル商 品、スナック菓子、植物、古本、くるじゃーた ー (黒糖) ボバドリンク、中古品セールなど もありました。

The YOSC has been slowly having more events to try and get the young Okinawan community together.

Last year October was the Uchinaanchu Taikai in Okinawa. Several of our members were able to go and participate in the Taikai. We all had a great time returning back to Okinawa and connecting with fellow Uchinaanchu and Uchinaanchu at heart from around the world. After the closing ceremony, several of our YOSC members participated in a celebration dinner with fellow Uchinaanchu from around the world.

In December we hosted our 4th annual Holiday Party. It was a small but fun event. We were able to enjoy each other's company, and reminisce about the past year.

In March we hosted an outdoor picnic where we played games and enjoyed each other's company. Luckily it was a nice sunny day among all the rainy days we had this winter and spring.

At the OAA's annual Craft Fair, YOSC hosted an information booth and we had over 20 new people interested in our group! Hopefully this means we will have more people join us in our future events and shows that there is interest in Okinawan culture.

Later this summer we are planning to have a Saataa Andaagii in-person cooking workshop. So keep an eye out for our Andaagii class announcement!

YOSCは、沖縄の若いコミュニティを団結 させるために、徐々にイベントを開催してき ました。

昨年の10月は沖縄でウチナーンチュ大会 がありました。私たちのメンバーの何人かが 大会に参加することができました。私たちは 皆、沖縄に戻り、仲間のウチナーンチュや世 界中から集まった心のあるウチナーンチュと つながることができ、楽しい時間を過ごしま した。閉会式の後、YOSCメンバー数名が世

界中から集まったウチナーンチュの仲間たちと の祝賀夕食会に参加しました。

12月には第4回ホリデーパーティーを開催 しました。小さいながらも楽しいイベントでし た。私たちはお互いに楽しい時間を過ごし、昨 年を思い出すことができました。

3月には、メンバーのために屋外ピクニック を主催し、ゲームをしたり、お互いの交流を楽 しみました。幸いなことに、この冬から春にか けて雨の日が多かった中で、その日は素晴らし い晴天に恵まれました。

OAAの毎年恒例のクラフトフェアで、YOSC は情報ブースを主催し、20名を超える新たな 人々が私たちのグループに興味を持ってくれま した。これにより、今後のイベントにさらに多く の人が参加し、沖縄文化への関心が示される ことを願っています。

この夏の後半には、サーターアンダーギーの 対面料理ワークショップを開催する予定です。 アンダーギークラスのお知らせに注目してくだ さい。

会館 (GVJCI) の二世ベテランズメモリアル ホールで行われました。ランチは Ladybug Caféのオーナーである新垣パブロさんによ るケータリングされました、と共にゲストの ためのフェイスマスクもドーネーションされ ました。

このイベントは婦人部ボランティアの皆さ んの献身的な働きのおかげで実現できまし た。それにドアプライズやグッズも婦人部ボ ランティアの皆さんのドーネーションです。

プログラム：歓迎の祝辞：神谷エドワード 県人会会長・黙祷：安里エセル・旧暦にまつ わる兎の特長や重要性そして兎年について のプレゼンテーション：比嘉朝儀・島美恵子 (退任部長) や大城ジョーン(新部長) に花束 贈呈・歴代会長の表彰：島根ヘリーン、安里 エソル、山内繁子、呉屋君子、島美恵子（金 城みやこ、赤嶺トミ子不在）
