Driving a truck or piece of heavy machinery and having the driver or operator be comfortable would be considered a no-brainer in these days of heightened health and safety awareness, but it wasn’t always like that.

ack in 1989 when Gordon and Jan McKendry started Geemac Trading (NZ), principally supplying the local bus industry with heaters, there was considerably less choice when it came to drivers’ seats. Gordon’s background was in buses and transport and two years after starting Geemac, he and Jan introduced high-quality drivers’ seats to the product portfolio in the form of ISRI, manufactured

by Isringhausen of Germany, a global OEM supplying specialised seating solutions to truck and bus makers worldwide.

Geemac has been the exclusive ISRI distributor in New Zealand since 1991, stocking an extensive seat range and, importantly, a large range of parts. “If we have not got it in stock, we can have what the customer needs in a couple of days. We carry a large range of seats and parts at our West Auckland warehouse,” says Gordon.

Over the past 29 years, the family-owned Geemac has listened carefully to its customers to ensure they offer a personalised, expert service along with their trusted, quality brands from Europe and Australia.

since 1991, Aurora (heating and ventilation) since 1989, and Hanover (bus LED destination display signage) for nearly 20 years. “We have been consistent,” says Gordon.

The team is small but professional and very knowledgeable in providing advice, support, seats and parts to the trucking and transport industry. Typically, orders placed before 1pm will be dispatched the same day, minimising downtime.

When he’s not in the warehouse or office, Gordon is a keen fisherman, poor golfer and passionate All Black fan (he tells us).

Over their years in business, Gordon and Jan have smartly facilitated both change and quality of choice in the local seats aftermarket.

For Geemac, the truck driver is the most important part of the truck. As Gordon points out, “Trucks are serviced regularly, and many transport companies will keep a supply of mechanical parts, but spare seats are usually conspicuous by their absence”. Seats tend to get looked at only when something breaks.

Much of what Geemac sell is at the higher end of the market. The ISRI seat will last a long time and keep the driver comfortable perhaps for more than a million kilometres, and if something wears out, there’s a big stock of parts on hand in New Zealand. For many that’s a price worth paying.
