Finally, summer is here!

Summer is my favourite part of the year. Not only is it holiday time and we get to have a bit of a sleep in, but the sun is out, the days are longer, and everything just seems to slow down a bit. The best part of summer though is going to the beach and doing some hikes, and I love getting on the road and exploring places I haven’t been to before. What’s your favourite drive to do? We talk to a truckie who tells us what his top drive in New Zealand is to do in his truck, check it out on page 14.

This issue we head to Feilding for the Mack Trucks 50 Year Anniversary Truck Show (page 16), and our on-theground reporter in Australia Mike tells us all about trucker life in the hot climate of Western Australia (page 22). We also catch up with our friends at Carr & Haslam (page 48).

Truck Show time!

The Historic Transport Museum Trust is a group of people dedicated to preserving transport history in the upper South Island.

They hold a show each year and in early October I went out to Pigeon Valley, south of Nelson, to have a look at this year’s event.

W

hen Dad and I arrived, the event was already in full swing and the grounds were full of trucks.

We made our way around

the grounds and there was much to look at. Trucks of all different shapes and sizes, old and new, scrubbed clean and ready to be viewed.

Many local transport companies had put in an

amazing effort to get their vehicles looking their best for the show.

Four heavy tow trucks were lined up down the back of the grounds. It was neat to be able to get up close to them and Dad explained how they recover trucks that get stuck or have broken down.

We also spotted a big red truck that looked quite oldfashioned. I asked Dad about it and discovered it was the first ever Hino to come to New Zealand, brought here from Japan, all the way back in 1960.

Teams of three people from different transport companies competed to see who could pull a truck along a short road, in the fastest time.

I watched some epic pulls by teams from the local companies and organisations (even the New Zealand Army soldiers, who had brought their military truck to the show, joined in).

The winning team only took 17 seconds. As we made our way out of the grounds, I farewelled the awesome show. The Pigeon Valley Truck Show was not one to miss!

By the time you guys read this, the holiday season won’t be very far away. Have a good time with your friends and family. I plan to get out in a couple of trucks over the school holidays and I will tell you all about it next time.

This sharp fleet of silver and blue trucks are based out of Pambula on the far south coast of New South Wales.

Transporting general freight and refrigerated goods, they’re a common site hauling the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne.

Then we got on the road and headed for Belfast.

My favorite part about the K200 is the bull bar – it’s Steve’s favorite part too.

New Zealand Truck drivers can work a maximum of 13 hours and must then take a break of at least 10 hours (as well as the standard half-hour breaks required every 5½ hours).

The road starts at the top of Taihape Deviation and comes out at Omahu, Hastings.

Back then he was driving for Irvine Freighters, and he even remembers the original registration! ID143.

Manfield Park in Feilding hosted the Mack Trucks 50 Year Anniversary Truck Show on Saturday 22 October as part of events held over Labour Weekend celebrating 50 years since Mack Trucks arrived in New Zealand. We headed along to take a look and join in the celebrations.

roud owners of Mack Trucks new and old travelled from all over the country to take part in the show. Some of these Macks are working trucks, while others are kept in storage and are only brought out for special occasions like this one!

The show was a huge success with Manfeild reporting that they had the most people through the gates in 20 years!

I went to the show with my parents who were over on holiday from Australia and my children. We packed a picnic, it was gorgeous weather and there was plenty to see and do including some race cars going around the track. It wasn’t only cars that raced around the track though – yes, you guessed – some trucks did too, and boy are they fast! It was an awesome family day out.

The day started off with a

convoy at 7.30am where all the trucks met up to then travel to the park together.

The day ended with most of the trucks doing a lap around the track tooting their horns before they exited the park after an amazing show day!

There was a voting booth and the public got to vote for which Mack Truck they liked the most, and Truck of the Show went to Glen Allingham from JAKS Trucks Auckland.

The painting I completed for the show’s fundraising auction.

Funds raised went to the “I am Hope” charity. The 1st Mack 1972 FR785 RST and the 50th Anniversary Mack 2022 Superliner.

Our on-the-ground reporter in Australia Mike Williams shows us what trucker life is like in the hot, unforgiving climate of Western Australia

f you want to drive the biggest trucks on public roads in the world, you head to Western Australia.

I was lucky enough to get to drive the biggest of them. I had to show I could do it first though – you need lots of experience and

training before you get the keys to a truck that’s worth over AU$1.5 million dollars!

Anyone with the ambition to work in the trucking sector in Western Australia can work their way through the ranks and get to sit in the driver’s seat.

There are a lot more

jobs than just drivers though. Without the heavy vehicle mechanics, autoelectricians and all the other support staff, we wouldn’t be able to move even a tonne of dirt! Where do you want to work in the transport team?

The Pilbara is a large, dry, thinly populated region in the north of Western Australia. It is known for its Aboriginal peoples; its ancient landscapes; the red earth; and its vast mineral deposits, in particular iron ore. It is also a global biodiversity hotspot for subterranean fauna.

68% of Australia’s export income comes from resources. These include iron ore, coal, aluminium, copper and gold. Look these up on the internet if you’re not sure what they are! Iron ore makes up about 32% of that, with 871 million tonnes exported out of Australia in 2021. That’s a lot of trains and a lot of really big trucks!

T

he running of our inaugural ‘Create a Truck’ competition has blown all our expectations out of the water. You guys and gals have really got stuck into this. The level of imagination has been quite literally off the scale, well done to everyone.

We have seen it all, from Kiwi fruit slices as wheels right through to working LED headlights. Even disconnecting trailers complete with landing legs, the list goes on. So as you can imagine, the judging of all the entries was going to be a difficult task.

However, we had an ace up our sleeve, with good mate Craig Christensen stepping up to the plate for us as our guest judge, thank you Craig. Some of you will recognise Craig from the August 2022 issue of New Zealand Trucking magazine where we featured Craig on our Mini Big Rigs pages. Our

story on Craig’s model truck building abilities, creating model trucks out of household items and waste, was the very inspiration for this competition.

We also say a big thank you to the team at Italeri truck kit sets for coming on board as our sponsor and providing the major prizes for us. Banana ice cream is so easy to make and tastes amazing. A delicious dessert made from only bananas, it will surely cool you down on those hot summer days!

Ingredients • 2-3 bananas, depending on how much you want to make • Choose ripe, yellow bananas. They should be sweet and soft • Any add-ons, like chocolate chips or peanut butter

Method 1) Peel the bananas and slice into rounds.

Lay them flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for at least two hours.

The longer you can freeze them the better.

2) Transfer the frozen banana pieces into a small food processor or high-speed blender. Blend the bananas until the mixture looks nice and smooth, like creamy, soft-serve ice cream.

3) If you want to, add in chocolate chips or peanut butter.

4) Transfer the creamy banana mixture into an airtight container and freeze until solid.

5) Serve with your favourite toppings and enjoy!

Threeingredient almond biscuits Marshmallow chocolate dip A chocolatey, gooey sweet treat that would be perfect after a delicious summer BBQ.

Ingredients • 200g chocolate • 400g marshmallows • 2 tablespoons of milk

Method 1) Heat the chocolate, half of the marshmallows and the milk in an ovenproof frying pan until it all melts together and has a smooth texture. Best done on a low heat.

2) Once smooth, remove from the heat, and then top with the other half of marshmallows until the whole pan is covered.

3) Place the pan in the oven and grill on high for 1-2 minutes, until the marshmallows are nice and toasted.

4) Serve with fruit on skewers, such as pineapple, banana and strawberry, for dunking.

If tomatoes are a fruit Then ketchup is a smoothie.

Berry smoothie Fruit smoothies are great because you can use any type of fruit you like for a quick, refreshing drink.

Ingredients • 240ml cow’s milk or plant milk • 120g mix of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries (fresh or frozen) • 2 tbsp porridge oats • 1 tsp maple syrup or honey

Method 1) Add all the ingredients to a blender 2) Whizz until smooth 3) Pour into a large glass and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Yep, you read that right – these delicious cookies are made with just three ingredients! It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Ingredients • 1 cup almond butter •1 cup raw sugar •1 egg

Method 1) Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced) 2) P ut the almond butter, raw sugar and the egg in a bowl and beat together to form a smooth paste.

3) U sing your hands, scoop up the mixture and into small balls, about a heaped teaspoon’s worth.

4) P lace onto an oven tray lined with baking paper. Press down gently with a fork.

5) B ake in the oven for approximately 10 minutes.

6) W hen they’re done, take them out of the oven and let them cool for a couple of minutes.

Then transfer the onto a rack to cool completely.

Why do basketball players love cookies?

In the late 1950s a couple of adventurous truck drivers visited Kenworth’s factory in America and, before long, fully built Kenworths were being imported to Australia.

What was so special about these trucks was that they were not being produced on a mass assembly line. Instead, each one was being custom-engineered to individual specifications. In 1970 a Kenworth manufacturing plant opened in Bayswater, Victoria and in March 1971 the first Australianmade Kenworth came off the line.

If you would like to come to one of the race meetings, come and see me and I will take you for a ride in my truck and you can come meet the TQR team. When the racing is finished for the day, I get to play cricket and soccer with the team and my mum cooks dinner on the BBQ. I love sausages cooked on the BBQ; they are my favourite. When I was little, when I was around three years old, my dad raced his truck in Australia – you can see all of the track over there and it is very hot, so I got to eat lots of ice cream.

I am looking forward to going racing in the school holidays because I get to spend more time away with the trucks. See you at the track!

Carr & Haslam Carr & Haslam is one of New Zealand’s oldest carrying companies. Milly McCauley met Chris Carr at the company’s Mount Richmond headquarters in Auckland to learn about the operation.

Who owns Carr & Haslam?

Carr & Haslam was started by the Carr family and has been continually owned and operated by our family for the last five generations.

How long has Carr & Haslam been in business?

Carr & Haslam began in 1862 and has been operating ever since – 160 years!

Where do you have trucks based?

Auckland, Palmerston North, Wellington and Christchurch.

How many trucks does Carr & Haslam operate?

The company operates 70 trucks.

What makes of trucks do you operate?

Our fleet is made up of models from Fuso and Mercedes-Benz.

Has the electric truck in your fleet been successful? Why did you choose that one?

The electric truck has been successful.

We chose the Fuso eCanter as this was the only mainstream model available to us. Fuso is a well-trusted manufacturer that already knows how to make trucks.

They also know how to make all the different technical parts of the machine

I am the managing director of the company.

Did you always think you would work in transport?

I had always grown up around the company, but I didn’t become involved in the business until I was 26.

What is your favourite thing about working in the industry?

My favourite part about working in the industry would be the constant change.

The transport industry is constantly

adapting and finding solutions as the world changes and requires different ways of doing things, whether that’s an increased demand for products or the call for climate action.

What things would you like to see change for the transport industry over time?

I would like to see the transport industry be recognised for its importance.

So many people don’t realise how crucial the transport industry is to your everyday life. It takes 14 transport deliveries alone to make the bread that you might turn into toast and eat for breakfast. Examples like this display just how significantly the transport industry affects our lives.

Do you have a favourite truck in your fleet?

No, they are all tools.

What would be some advice you would give to any young people who want to start a career in transport?

I would encourage anyone wanting to start a career in transport to have passion and really want to do it. Working in transport is a very different job, there is so much opportunity to work in different branches. It is also a job that is forever changing and one that always

Can you tell me a fun or interesting fact about Carr & Haslam?

Established 160 years ago, Carr & Haslam throughout its history has made three major transitions across four propulsion methods, these being: Horse and cart to petrol, petrol to diesel and now diesel to electricity. This is massive when you think about it.

Carr & Haslam has lived through some of the most revolutionary technology invented, and continues to run an extremely successful company as it learns to adapt.
