PRESIDENT'S REPORT

The 22/23 Rodeo season has got off to a grand start with the Winchester and Methven rodeos at Labour Weekend. As always, these two clubs did us proud and we look forward to a very successful season.

The claim (Judicial Review) in the High Court by the NZ Animal Law Association (NZALA) and Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE), that the Code of Welfare: Rodeos is unlawful, and that all rodeo events are not permissible under the Animal Welfare Act 1999, is now behind us.

The Judge ruled that the Code is lawful and therefore the sport of rodeo is legal. The applicants did not pursue their claims that all rodeo events are not permissible, resulting in the Judge awarding costs be paid by the applicants to the NZRCA

We still however, have the review of our Code by the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) underway. Members of the review subcommittee will attend a rodeo later in the season and will visit a Stock Contractor to get a better understanding of the work that goes into training and preparing animals to compete in rodeos. It is expected that the draft Code that emerges from this process will go out to the public for submissions around March 2023, at which time all members will be encouraged to make a submission in support of our sport.

But for now, it is full on for the 22/23 season and I thank all the clubs and officials for the huge effort they put in to running successful rodeos, and wish all the contestants the best.

We do have very high standards set for dress, behaviour and animal welfare, so for the good of our sport please do everything you can to maintain these standards.

Lastly but not least, have a safe and happy Christmas and all the best for 2023. Stay strong and take care.

Yours in Rodeo, Lyal Cocks

KIWI MAGIC

Earlier this year NZRCA member Pat McCarthy travelled from Chatto Creek to America catching up with old friends and attending some of the great showcase rodeos One of those he caught up with as part of his journey was Otago born cowboy Kenny Barringer Pat summed up what Kenny is up to, as ‘magic’ and believed his story was one all those back in New Zealand would be inspired by.

I caught up with Kenny in early November to see what he has been getting up to since leaving New Zealand to become a resident in America back in 1998 Where he now runs a trucking company by the name of ‘Kiwi Cattle Company’ and holds one of the most prestigious roles that could be bestowed on a lad from New Zealand He is currently one of the most respected and sought after livestock superintendents for rodeos across America and has flown the NZ flag with utter pride.

This year he will attend the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas as the Assistant Livestock Superintendent, a

role that is an incredible honour and one that Kiwis back home are very proud of him for

It was a Friday afternoon when I called, and Kenny was backing up a night shift carting bulls and was on the way home from sourcing a load of hay for the bulls he breeds at his home If you travel 6 miles out of Lewellen you will find 80 acres of land owned by Kenny and his wife Sara where they have raised three boys. Skyler (27) & Cody (25) were raised as Kenny’s own and are both serving in the Marines, while their youngest Kenton (21) is now at the stage where he is looking at coming home to work alongside his father in both the trucking business and with the many bulls Kenny manages for rodeos across the state.

Growing up in the little biddy town of Allenton in Otago, Kenny recalls attending the Outram rodeo as a kid and all he ever wanted was to join those on the other side of the fence. By the age of fifteen thanks to the support of great mentors like Ian and Sue Nichol, the Taieri College student was hooked on the sport,

Olivia Weatherburn talks to New Zealand born and bred Kenny Barringer, US based rodeo stock contractor and 2022 WNFR Assistant Livestock Superintendant

swinging a rope and straddling bulls Travelling around in the early years with the likes of Dave Ashford he started out in the 2nd division bulls before riding into the open ranks in both saddle bronc and rope & tie with a small dabble in team roping along the way Kenny describes Ian and Sue as his rodeo parents, who took him everywhere, loaned him a horse to rope off and where a huge influence in his future, which he can’t thank them enough for. There were many people who helped him get started including Laurie Latta, who he later bought a horse off before departing NZ and Neville Clarke who he described as ‘ a frikin’ awesome rider’.

“I was pretty dam lucky to have such good people in my camp ”

Back in 1991, it wasn’t unusual to have 35 or more rope and tie contestants entered up The competition was hard but the memories cowboys have been left with have made it all worth it in Kenny’s opinion He was just sixteen when he won the NZRCA rookie Rope and Tie title for the 1991 1992 season

Motueka’s one day rodeo back in the early 1990’s still provides some of the memories that resembled the most fun for Kenny.

It was an annual three day affair where a van was hired and in piled a group of questionable folk such as Warren Nichol, Kelvin Jones, Mark Tweedie, Greg Lamb, Karen McDonald & Tineka McDonald.

“A blast was had on the drive up on the Friday, socialising throughout the Saturday then pulling it all together to ride on the Sunday before trekking back to Otago that evening” he recalled.

Being the humble Kiwi, Kenny describes his actual riding rodeo career as very short lived and that he didn’t actually compete for that long, commenting “I never really rodeoed hard”, but he is still very much involved, having gone down a different avenue, caring for and leading some of the most magnificent bovine athletes in the world. Many would say his body would be thanking him, but he admits he still gets run over on a regular basis but can claim that he still holds a 100% bull riding streak in America

“I have rode time on every bull I have got on and never been bucked off but I sure do pick my poison”

In 1997, Canada called his name and after an 18 month stint, he returned home before returning to America in the fall of 1998 to set up camp for the unforeseeable future. The first two months were spent

rodeoing across the Northwest before making the move to Colorado where he scored a job with 1999 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Ring of Honor inductee Jerome Robinson Jerome was a long time Arena Director for the last 29 years, and he will go down in history as one of the most influential men in all of western sports. Kenny worked alongside him for 3 years where they had the deal of running the PBR, from setting up the panels and bucking chutes, to working each of the bull rides It was while he was there that he ended up as the head livestock super intendent for the PBR completing three finals while he was there. A great achievement for a Kiwi from down under.

Following the PBR it was off to Wyoming for the next five years where Kenny worked for Hank and Lori Franzen who own and manage Powder River Rodeo. It is one of the most well respected and award winning firms in professional rodeo. It was here where Kenny got the privilege of flanking a bucking horse of the year for the first time 2012 Inductee to the PRCA Hall of Fame and three times Bucking Horse of the Year, Khadafy Skoal, an experience that set him up to move to Nebraska to start helping Dave and Cathy Wieferich, the owner operators of the Brookman Rodeo Co. The famous stock contracting outfit that’s been important to the professional rodeo world for nearly 90 years, first starting out in 1936.

Kenny (48) is now the livestock superintendent for the Wieferich’s and is also providing bulls for the Brookman string with 25 30 breeding cows kept on his property and 60 head of bucking bulls at any one time. They are fed grain twice a day with a specialised grain mix made up of corn, oats, distillers’ grain and soybean meal. It can be a costly exercise at $460 US/tonne

'When the boys are due to head out on the road, they will be getting minimum of 15lbs (6kgs) a day per bull plus hay” Kenny explained. Each rodeo they generally pack in the grain with the rodeo committees providing the hay With 55 bulls on the road in the last summer from January to Mid September, feeding and maintenance of these bovine athlete’s is a full time job in itself. His role is one that rodeos can’t operate without and its awesome to see a Kiwi leading the way.

Each year the Las Vegas WNFR (Wrangler National Finals Rodeo), is usually a very social and stress free occasion, but this year Kenny will be rather busy as the ‘assistant livestock super intendent’. When asked how does a Kiwi get a job like this over contractors who have been there for years? The answer simply was that it’s all about connections and building relationships over the years which we know Kiwis are mighty good at doing The contestants and the contractors are the main ones pushing for him to be there, showing he has proven his stockman ship skills over the years and the ability to deliver at a high quality standard “I will be at the finals for 30 days this year… way too long to be in Las Vegas” he joked

Each day the bulls will be exercised by horseback which is some of the only times you will find him on a horse these days. Daily checks on the feed and its quality are made ensuring each bull is getting the nutrition they require to perform at their best and stay healthy while on the road. Each night he will escort the bulls to the stadium and take them back to their pens after each show. All this after setting up the pens and bucking chutes for the main event Kenny assures us he will still fit in some socialising around the work he is there to complete, as like most cowboys he is pretty good at yarning with one arm in a hold position.

Kenny Barringer, Pat McCarthy and bullfighter Mike Anderson at Sidney, Montana - Sept 22 Pat McCarthy telling Kenny and World ranking #2 Bareback rider Jesse Pope a yarn - Sept 22

This year, two of their bulls are heading to the WNFR in Las Vegas, 5 year old Stir Crazy who has a 75% buck off rate and 4 year old Mojo Risin will assist in putting the fifteen qualified riders through their paces Kenny joked “the most I have ever had at the NFR is two and the least being zero ” The bulls are chosen by the NFR qualified riders and their director each year and pay $10,000 for the appearance back to the stock contractors.

Over the years many miles have been driven and many legends have been met. One of the biggest trips was to Florida which is 1800 miles (3000km) from his Lewellen home. “It was always a fun trip, we would head down to the Ram Circuit finals in May, go air boating and chase alligators while we were there”. An experience he says everyone should have a go at. Good thing for electronic phone books these days as Kenny’s contact book would need its own trailer to cart it with the connections and people he has met over the years They are just everyday people doing amazing things in the sport we all love Pat McCarthy has been one of these people and even though Kenny has known him for many years he has been enjoying listening to Pats story and yarns on ‘The Equine Life’ podcast while doing the graveyard shift in the trucks lately He enjoys catching up with fellow Kiwis and Pat, Quentin Taylor and himself had a blast at the Pendleton round up rodeo at the end of September when they all came together. Lindsay Taylor was like a big brother to Kenny growing up and he recalls following him around everywhere in the early days We look forward to bringing you Quentin’s story in the next Rodeo News

Kenny describes Texan’s Pete Gays as a ‘wildman’ but also one of the coolest people he has had privilege to be around. He is a 4x WNFR bull riding qualifier and currently, handles day to day operations on the ranches in Terrell and Kaufman, Texas for Rafter Rodeo.

Recently while in Oklahoma, a friend called up and they met up for breakfast. That breakfast ended up being a real sociable one with the presence of Garth Brooks and good friend Maury Tate, the founder of the "Mo" Betta clothing line and a big name in national rodeo circles Maury made all the shirts Garth used to wear on tour. Alongside him sat two time world Saddle Bronc Champion Robert Etbauer

“We were just having breakfast, a lot of people be wholly crap but it’s all part of our world, getting to meet and become friends with some legends of our sport”. Friendships last forever if you take them, just ask Paddy Church, who within 12 hours of landing in Denver as a 16 year old, was practising alongside World Champion Kody Lostroh. Paddy became one of Kenny and Sara’s kids and had a whole lot of fun, made a whole lot of money and memories, and achieved a hell of a lot of respect

So many people back here in NZ have influenced where Kenny has got to today, and he will be forever grateful. This has only been a snapshot of the life the boy from Otago has set up for himself and if you ask any Kiwi who has travelled to the States, the roles Kenny has secured and executing with pride, are the most incredible honour to be bestowed on any cowboy/contractor and especially a Kiwi.

It has been a few years since coming back to New Zealand, pre Covid. His parents still live at Woodside, just down the road from Outram and he hopes to return for a Xmas circuit, and ride one last time at rodeos where it all started and watch his nephew William Tisdall, who is starting to make his mark.

Be sure to tune into this year’s Las Vegas National Finals to catch all the action and keep a look out for Mojo Risin and Stir Crazy, along with their hard working Kiwi owner Kenny Barringer.

South Island Rodeo Buckle Series

brought to you by the food den

BACKGROUND PURPOSE

Founded in 2003, and contested strongly until 2014, the South Island Rodeo Buckle Series was started by NZRCA Life Member Charlie Robinson and backed by Pat and Merihi McGrath. Pat and Merihi proudly ran The Food Den, a business that has supported rodeo for many years with catering for the public and competitors serving up scrumptious hot dogs, chips and cold drinks on rodeo days. Neil Gillispie was also heavily involved with the series covering the administration duties. With Pat's untimely passing and Charlie stepping back from rodeo the series has had a hiatus until its recent revival this season Pat's whanau are honoured to be able to support this series once more as they continue to run the family business at upcoming rodeos. Be sure to give thanks to them next time you are getting a hotdog or chips on rodeo day!

To encourage and recognise the achievements and progress of the next generation of rodeo, while supporting South Island rodeo clubs.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Entry is automatically open to full time South Island residents, competing in the Second Division events of barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding.

Kia ora koutou,

The South Island Youth Development Program Jackpot was run in Waimate on the 12th of November. It was decided that it was to be run in Waimate this year due to it being a relatively central arena in the South Island and having the facilities to cater to a large number of contestants.

This year it had a different look than in the past We focused on a low key, fun training morning for those new to the sport, a “how to” which was heaps of fun, just have a go, ask questions, a learning type of morning and where our more experienced riders could help out, get a hand if needed or just a chance to get some practice in.

Andrea, Rachelle and I saw the Youth Development Jackpot as a way to encourage new rangatahi/youth into our sport, but also an opportunity for our NZRCA membered up Rangatahi/young people to step up and coach/ support the growth of Rodeo in the South Island, whilst also getting the opportunity to compete against each other and an avenue be looked at for selection for the North/South Youth Challenge team 2022. It was a hugely successful day and was really well supported, especially from people new to the sport just wanting to give it a go.

I want to say a massive thank you to:

Andrea Harborne for the amazing amount of work you have put in and being so easy to work with, nothing was too difficult and it was heaps of fun, you are an amazingly organised lady.

Ray Taylor for being our official Judge, you were fantastic as always and thank you very much for your support of the Youth Jackpot event, we loved having you on board. Tony for helping Ray and being his writer for the events, thank you.

Simon Metcalf for turning up and chucking on your BullFighter gear and lending a hand and supporting the lads at the shoots, so very much appreciated.

Xavier Sanders and Cade Cameron for your support in all events, we know you both have missed out on making the youth team due to taking on apprenticeships and leaving school, yet you got stuck in and lent a hand and were great role models, getting out there being Bullfighters, getting in the shoots and showing the younger generation the ropes and for your encouragement of all the riders and also getting a few rides in under your belts successfully, thank you.

Claude Armstrong, our very own youth Bullfighter, thank you so very much for your help on the day. It was fantastic to see you out there showing another aspect of our sport and I know the riders were so very appreciative of you being there doing a job well done, thank you.

Jack Clever, Jason Tisdale and Jim Lilley for all your help behind the shoots with the bull riding, we really appreciated the support.

To the 2nd division riders, who were there in support and also helping on the drum, in the shoots etc, hats off to you all, you made it a fun, successful well run event and Nye for organising the chutes and being out there to help the riders also.

Nye Harborne and Kate Haugh for your Breakaway coaching and advice fantastic work guys, thank you so much for giving up your time and offering support, it is so very much appreciated.

Andrea Harborne, Kate Haugh, thank you very much ladies for your barrel racing advice/coaching and Sky Sanders for assisting with this, demonstrating what Andrea was talking about, as well as you and the 2nd Divi girls for helping out with the younger riders supporting and encouraging others, well done!

Ben Sanders for being our drum picker upper and making sure I was hydrated all day, and just checking if we needed anything, thank you.

One of the main points of positive feedback was the older/experienced rangatahi/youth helping with the day and with the coaching, making it relatable and fun. Well done to all the youth who helped, Xavier, Cade, Will, Chris, Beau, Laine, Jazaiah, Chris, Sky, Tara, Libby, if I have missed anyone please know you were all very much appreciated, it was a busy day and I don't want to miss anyone out, so if I have, I do apologise!

Waimate Rodeo Club, our stock contractors the stock were fantastic! thank you so very much.

Waimate Rodeo Club members for all your support also, running the BBQ during the day, the Ice Blocks, pushing up the stock, helping run out the stock, working the arena, and all the hrs working behind the scenes was amazing, thank you again, I know how much work is involved in getting it all up and running and we are super appreciative of your support of our National Youth Program

A big thank you to all our parents, who got your young people up/down the road to support the event, hats off to you all, to those who got in and helped out, to those who came and said hi, to those who supported the youth when they came out competing with cheers and claps, thank you. I am still buzzing with how well it went, there were a few knocks and bruises but on the whole, everyone came out smiling and the ice packs were a nice relief from the heat for some. Thanks for supporting the National SI Youth Development program.

Ngā mihi, Shells!

JOHNNY PERKINS

Johnny Perkins & 'Shanghai' with their winnings 1972

Johnny started rodeoing, riding calves at the age of fourteen, in 1967 Most of the shepherds who worked at Ironwood, the family farm, were involved in rodeo and this led to Johnny tagging along with them The likes of Barry Cox, Eddie O’Connor and Neville Paterson helped get him his start

The Rope & Tie event started in the South Island around 1969 and Johnny had a good farm horse that was called Target, who he started training and soon Target became his roping horse.

Along with many other South Island rodeos, Mataura Rodeo began in 1969 Johnny, along with Vic Hattrell, Marty Ashby, Harvey Perkins Snr, Finn McKay, Harvey Dunstan, Bob Williams, Jimmy Richardson and Scotty Birse (to name a few) helped get the club off the ground

After meeting a talented barrel racer, Ava Lamb at the Waikaia Rodeo, Johnny and Ava were married in 1971. 1972 and 1973 were Ava’s most successful years of barrel racing, winning numerous rodeos, trophies, and awards in 1972 and then becoming the Reserve NZ Barrel Racing Champion in 1973

Reflecting on the popularity of rodeo in the early years, Johnny says “In those days the competition was very good There were lots of people out competing in all the different events”. In 1972, Johnny won the RCASI (Rodeo Cowboys Assn South Island) All round Championship Saddle He competed in Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling, Bareback, Rope & Tie and Saddle Bronc

Then in 1973 Johnny won the NZRCA (the first year the Association was amalgamated) Rope & Tie and Bareback titles. He narrowly missed out on the All Round title that year

Looking back on his rodeo career, Johnny’s best memory is of the Rope & Tie Title in 1983 at the Te Kuiti NFR. He broke his leg at Moteuka Rodeo and the cast came off the Friday before the NFR Johnny visited the physio that day and got instructions on strapping the leg to be able to compete. Using Laurie Latta’s horse “Gunman”, Johnny was able to win go round money and place in the average to win the 1983

"Enjoy the competition while you can. Enjoy the rodeo family it’s truly unique. Enjoy camping out with your family and friends. Enjoy the horses available currently there wasn’t the horses or the breeding back in the 70’s and 80’s like there is now."
Johnny's words of advice to today's competitors

Message to the Membership from OMARAMA RODEO CLUB

Although there was no rodeo in 2021 our club didn’t sit idle We took the opportunity to do some more demolition- our Long drop toilets got demo’d and our Timers box or “Bird Box” as it was more affectionately known, also has been removed We were very lucky to have some local support from the “Omarama Community Mens Shed” who took on the project to build us a new Timers box For 2022 we continued on our mission of upgrading the grounds, and have sourced a new secretary’s office, which will also have a new location beside the Timers box, allowing for our hard working Secretary and Treasurer to get to watch the rodeo while they work.

Our grounds are located on private land, of which we have supportive land owners. While we have been upgrading the rodeo grounds, the owners have been busy upgrading their property. The contestant parking area will look a bit different this year with fixed grid irrigation installed This will require some thought and care from those contestants parking & grazing their horses. Please be mindful of where you park don’t run over any irrigation pods, and if you can avoid making pens for horses on any freshly sown grass, it would all be much appreciated In 2020 we asked for a camping donation, that donation raised over $500, which we gave to the landowner as a gesture of thanks for the use of the parking area That donation was passed onto the Omarama School, which was put to good use We will be asking for donations again this year from camping contestants.

As said above we no longer have our long drop toilets, what this means is our hire toilets wont arrive until midday on the 27th December. The club is aware of no rodeo on the 27th, so if contestants can refrain from arriving till lunch on the 27th that would be very helpful Or if you are planning to come up earlier, then there are a number of accommodation options in Omarama where you can stay, while horses are grazing at the grounds the Omarama Top 10 Holiday Park, Big Sky Motels, Ahuriri Motels are some to support- booking will be essential.

Internet banking is a new initiative from the NZRCA, and one we support But as Christmas sees banks closed, if you would like to pay your entry fees via internet banking, please do so by Friday 23rd December. If your payment is not showing in our account by Christmas Eve then we will need you to pay by cash on rodeo morning

We are a small but mighty club, with a grand total of 8 active committee members Our club is proud of the events we offer to the community, and are thankful for the support we receive in return. While our name is the Omarama Rodeo Club, we are a community committee, and we are looking forward to hosting you all in our beautiful community, and putting on a great event for the public to enjoy over the holiday period.

For all your farm building needs, please contact Patrick McCarthy on 027 224 4824 farmbuild.co.nz
