Welcome to the 150th New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport Wellington Cup.
If you’re receiving this then you’re locked and loaded for this Saturday, and this is your essential guide to what’s happening (and when) this weekend at RACE Trentham.
Months in the planning, an event such as the Wellington Cup requires a large volume of administration to ensure everything runs smoothly. This year we thought we’d collate all the information into one place, and publish it as a handy online spectator guide.
In here you’ll find general information that’s of interest to all spectators, and also the specific zone-by-zone details that will be relevant to those attendees heading into these spaces.
Proud Supporter of the 150th Wellington Cup
Gates open at 11am, with the first race commencing at 12:25pm. While we appreciate that there may be a desire to hurry into the course to sit in a favourite spot, the only people who will be allowed into the venue before 11am are raceday staff, officials and those in the Members BYO/Gold carpark. Please do not be offended if you are held outside the venue prior to this time, as it is important that the hundreds of casual staff are able to be properly briefed before they welcome visitors onto the course.
We have four entrances to the venue operating on Saturday. From south to north they are as follows:-
• The HIBS Gate is for raceday officials, jockeys, trainers and staff only. A separate turnstile will provide a credential check and bag inspection for those entering via this gate.
• The Committee Gate is for Disabled, Members Reserved, BYO/ Gold Members and Catering Staff only. All patrons entering this gate must be accredited to be on site •
The Main Gate is where 95% of patrons will enter the venue, with 12 named turnstiles for General Admission, Owners & Members, Corporate Hospitality etc.
• The Members Gate has limited free parking available, with all patrons utilising this area to be processed at the main gate via an internal walkway.
With an all-new double-tracked Trentham Station, arriving by train is the easiest way to get to the NZCIS Wellington Cup. Trains arrive from the south every half hour (at quarter past and quarter to), and with a new underpass you’ll pop out right by the entrance gates.
At the end of the day you can now depart on the Racecourse Road side of the tracks, with trains leaving at 5:35pm, 6:05pm, 6:35pm and every half hour before and after. Tickets are $4 each way (cash) or $2.48 with a Snapper card.
All Taxis and Rideshare drop offs will be on Ararino Street which is on the other side of the railway line from the Racecourse. From there it’s a quick 80 metre walk through the new railway underpass to arrive at the main Racecourse entry gates.
As per above, the pickups and drop-offs for uses will be on Ararino Street which is on the other side of the railway line from the Racecourse. From there it’s a quick 80 metre walk through the new railway underpass to arrive at the main Racecourse entry gates. Buses will be parked further afield and return back to the Ararino Street train carpark for pickup at the conclusion of the meeting.
Oncourse Carparking is available on a first-in first-served basis for Members and Owners via the Members Gate. This is an alcohol-free zone. There is no public parking available in the centre of the course, or in any of the other carparks.
Once the Members Gate carpark is exhausted, other parking is available on side streets that aren’t part of the Traffic Management
plan. Note that with the new pedestrian underpass it may be a better option to park on the other side of the railway line.
Note that the usual entrance to the Course via the one-way on Granville Street is not available, as Granville Street becomes a oneway road in the opposite direction to usual. If approaching from the south, head down one street further to Seddul Bahr Road. You’ll be greeted prior to the HIBS gate and directed to head down past the Main Gate to the Members Gate.
The Grand Tour Racing Festival comes to Trentham for Wellington Cup day 2023. Vines Bar has been transformed into the Grand Tour Party Zone for the Wellington
Cup, with an all-day party hosted by Rollestxn Ave, two of the South Island’s hottest DJ’s. Bars and bathrooms are located inside this space, with food options and
totes directly outside. There’s also outdoor games and lounges, with all patrons able to access this space at no charge.
Incredible colour, creativity and class graces the iconic catwalk of Fashion in the Field supported by Rydges Wellington and ZM.
Four distinct categories bring an array of style to compete for the Supreme title of 2023.
Classic Lady of The Carnival Raceday fashion in its purest sense brings an absolute decadence to the occasion and pays respect to the traditional aspects of fashion in racing. Absolute dignity, poise and headwear is a must in this highly regarded category.
Contemporary Lady of the Carnival
This playful and avant-garde category showcases the colour and fun with a slight push to the boundaries of traditional
racewear. Style and originality are taken into high regard.
Gentleman of the Carnival
Growing in style, prestige and popularity and a clever use of colour and textiles. A high attention to accessory detailing has created a highly contested category.
Maiden of the Carnival
Setting the stage for emerging stars to shine. For ladies and gents that have never won a Fashion in the Field category*
Entry into the competition is free*
There’s a host of amazing prizes for each category, with special thanks to Rydges Wellington, L’oreal, Hancocks and ZM.
A new addition to Cup Day this year is New Zealand based Alchemist Mixology, bringing their outdoor cocktail lounge to RACE Trentham.
After moving back to New Zealand from Europe, Alchemist found little in the way of beverage choices, most events offering just Craft Beer and Wine. They provide a different kind of experience, beautiful cocktails made with top shelf spirits & liqueurs with mixers & garnishes sourced right here in Aotearoa. The beauty of Alchemist Mixology is the flexibility on offer, from bespoke or set menu’s, right through to changeable decor, bar design and locations right throughout New Zealand, your dream bar comes to life.
We are operating a combined Members BYO and Gold carpark in the shady areas either side of the committee entrance gates. Access to these areas are limited to RACE club members and their guests, and there are still a limited number of BYO carparks available for members to purchase until Friday, at a cost of $200.
It is a requirement of our liquor licence that in order to operate this area we circulate terms and conditions to those who are parking their vehicles in this carpark.
All members who have purchased a BYO/Gold carpark will receive a numbered carpark accreditation card, which will match the number of their vehicle space. Please park in your allotted space, and allow room for your neighbours to also move about freely.
You can park your vehicle in the carpark on Friday during business hours, or from 9am - 12pm on Saturday. If you’re parking on
Saturday any guests who arrive with you when you park your car must be accredited to enter the venue (i.e. a member, owner, guest or Wellington Cup ticket holder).
Please treat this carpark as a privilege, and bring only enough alcohol for moderate consumption. Kegs and other large containers are not permitted, and will be confiscated for the duration of the weekend. You can erect small structures in your space, provided they are less than 3m x 3m in size and have no walls. We also ask that consideration for others view and parking be factored in when you are creating your zone.
Totes, food trucks and toilet facilities will be available right outside the carpark, which is fenced to provide one entry/exit point.
Please note that there is a “oneway” liquor policy. i.e. any BYO alcohol is only to be consumed within the confines of the Carpark
area and is not permitted to be brought on to the course, however any alcohol purchased within the course area can be taken in to the BYO area. Access to any of the BYO carpark areas will require “Members stand access” or equivalent.
The carpark closes at 8pm sharp on Saturday night, and you are welcome to leave your car overnight (at your own risk). This space is subject to monitoring by RACE staff, Red Badge Security and the NZ Police, with the latter particularly invested in ensuring the carpark closes at the correct time.
If you’ve purchased Members Reserved parking then you are located in the prime spot on the Ascot Lawn. You should have received a numbered carpark accreditation card, which will match the number of their vehicle space. Enter through the committee gate, and head down to the fenced area which is located towards the Parade Ring. Turn into this area and please park in your allotted space. Note that everyone in the car must have accreditation to be inside the course (member, owner, guest or Wellington Cup ticket holder). Anyone who is not will have to make their way to the main entrance gate to purchase a ticket.
Please also note this carpark is not a BYO space. If you would like to transfer your spot into the BYO area, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
We have a very limited number of parks available in a prime spot on the Ascot Lawn. Please contact us ahead of time to ensure you can be granted access to this area.
Karaka is back. Back to our traditional date and back to serving up an unforgettable Karaka experience.
The welcome will be warm, the drinks will be cold and the thoroughbreds will be exquisite. Join us for the perfect blend of horses, people and place, while securing yourself the next generation of kiwi talent at Karaka 2023.
With the exception of General Admission ticket holders, everyone else on course on Wellington Cup Day will be wristbanded to ensure they have access to their specific area during the race meeting. This will happen at the bag check zone, to ensure smooth processing and limit the number of times you have to queue to gain access to your area.
This all-inclusive package is named after last years Wellington Cup winner Lincoln King, and is located trackside in a premium marquee. The best way to enter the venue is via the dedicated Lincoln King turnstiles at the main gate, where you’ll be wristbanded and bag checked. You then make your way
behind the Members Stand to find your marquee directly between the track and the Parade Ring, by the raceday tieups. Bars and totes are located within the marquee and bathrooms are located on the ground floor of the Annex Building, and clearly signposted from the Parade Ring.
Keep an eye out for many of our VIP sponsors and special guests who frequent this area.
If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket to one of our 9 corporate boxes then you have some of the best seats in the house on NZCIS Wellington Cup Day. Simply present your ticket at one of the Corporate Hospitality turnstiles at the Main Entrance, and after being wristbanded and bag checked you can take the Members Stand lift to
Level 3.
With entrée platters, a buffet lunch and afternoon tea you’ll be well looked after, and there’s a premium cash bar and dedicated totes specific to the Corporate Box area.
Gold Room Gold Members of the Wellington Racing Club have access to the most exclusive enclave on course, the Champagne Lounge. Located adjacent to the Birdcage
Due to the influx of Gold Members this season, we’ve included the outdoor area adjacent to the Champagne Lounge which has another 20 seats and bar leaners.

This space is dedicated solely to our members, owners and their guests, and incorporates the Desert Gold Restaurant. The Castletown Café has a great range of food options, and a barista for those seeking coffee. The outdoor seating can get incredibly busy, and there are toilets and totes located at either end of the space. This is likely to fill up, so if you’re not onsite by the first couple of races it may pay to head up to the Milling Floor.
A further 500 seats for members, owners and their guests are available indoors and outdoors on the Milling Floor of the Members Stand. Located on Level 2, this area includes two bars, two totes and a large quantity of bathrooms. Both ends of the outdoor seating are reserved for hospitality guests
seated in the Carbine and Derby rooms, but the middle and upper sections are available on a first-in first-served basis for members, owners and their guests. Please follow the signage to ensure you are located in the right area.
One of our prime hospitality areas, this is located on Level 2 of the Annex Building, directly above the Raceday Office. It can be accessed via the lift at the rear of the Members Stand or via the two walkways/ramps.
When you enter the room look for the screen to confirm your table number, and also your allocated grandstand seat number outside on the Milling level. You can move freely between these spaces all day long.
Totes and bathrooms are located in the lounge space outside of
the Carbine Room, along with the exclusive Cloakroom Bar. The buffet area and two bars are located inside the Carbine Room.
Kiwi Summer BBQ
Enjoy unsurpassed views of the finishing stretch from the Rosehill suite in our historic Public Stand.
Totes are located in the suite and outside on the public lawn, with toilets available downstairs.
The ground floor hub for owners, trainers and members is a busy selfcontained space, with bars, totes and bathrooms included. Note that there is restricted viewing from this room on Wellington Cup Day due to the marquees located outside. Famous for its nachos.
