Facilities SAE Institute rests its teaching strategy on personalised, practical learning. There are no large lecture halls at SAE; rather students learn in top-of-the-range studios with equipment that parallels industry standards. Studio A includes the Audient ASP8024 console and 24-track Otari tape machine – equipment that is still in use and much prized throughout studios nationwide. An extensive array of high-quality outboard effects and processors help instil a greater insight into how each part of the studio functions while providing a more tactile working environment than plug-ins allow. Studio B boasts an impressive array of plugins in a powerful Mac Pro with a ProTools HD set up. Total control of every aspect of the mix is afforded through the revolutionary AVID S6 modular control surface, allowing every setting to be saved at the touch of a button. Studio C features a simple, easy to use control room setup with a powerful computer and interface, several pieces of outboard equipment and a Focal monitoring system. Connects to the Studio B live room. Studio D is our purpose-built audio post production studio, with a Mac Pro computer system using interactive Euphonix control surfaces, ProTools and Logic Pro and Ableton Live software and a high quality 5.1 channel ADAM Audio monitoring environment. Studio E features meticulously designed acoustics for critical monitoring of recordings, a key requirement of the mastering process. The suite is based around a powerful Mac Pro running Steinberg’s Wavelab, featuring UAD hardware and plugins, and a comprehensive monitoring system consisting of top-of-theline speakers by B&W and Genelec, as well as the famous FM radio-simulating Auratones. Computer Labs across the campus contain around 50 digital workstations packed with applications including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Microsoft Office and more, allowing students to take their projects out of the studio and continue working on any computer available to them. The ease of access provided by this large number of workstations means students have a place to complete assignment work, research, revise and relax with fellow students, and don’t require their own computer and software licenses in order to complete their programme of study. Access is provided to both internal and external library databases as well as a host of additional resources to aid study. Film Studio is a large shooting space with green screen and a professional lighting setup. Equipment includes a variety of industry level cameras, lighting and grip equipment for hire. Start Your Journey as a Contemporary Music Performance Student at Otago.

UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO

Our contemporary performance papers have evolved for 2019 and onwards in order to meet the needs of the modern musician. Performance papers are now full-year and students can choose from two different pathway options within the three-year Bachelor of Music: that of the set repertoire pathway or the originals pathway. The Set Repertoire pathway allows students to learn to play or sing in a variety of styles, to sight-read and to gain the skills of a session musician. The Originals pathway is for those who want to write and perform their own music – whether as singer/songwriter, or in collaboration with other students in the programme. Otago’s contemporary music performance programme caters for students who are passionate about creating their own unique identity as a musician. Students get the freedom to create and explore musical ideas in a supportive environment overseen by skilled staff who are professional and passionate about what they do. We offer performance in vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar and drums. Applications from wind and brass students for this programme will also be considered. You can even apply to do performance as an electronic music artist wanting to develop your skillset. All performance students get instrumental or vocal lessons that focus on technique and musicianship, live performance skills and the recording studio environment. There are many performance opportunities as part of the course in a campus and city famous for its active music scene. This programme is perfect for the student who wishes to gain inspiration and confidence through networking and collaborating with other emerging artists. With talent and application, you will have the opportunity to develop your craft into a viable and sustainable career. Emphasis: Performance papers focus primarily on a popular music repertoire and students choose whether to follow a set repertoire pathway, or their own original work pathway. Academic papers (songwriting, theory/ analysis, technology and studio production, cultural theory etc.) are designed to stimulate composition, arrangement and technological skills. Papers in Western art music (classical) or ethnomusicology can be included.
