Claude Vause enrolled in the Bachelor of Audio Engineering and Production at the MAINZ Christchurch campus straight out of school. “MAINZ lived up to all my expectations. The staff were extremely helpful and went above and beyond to make sure you were getting the most out of your time there. The facilities are great and are just what you’d expect in a commercial studio, so it makes being able to work in other studios a lot easier. “I think the best thing about MAINZ is being able to spend as much time as you want using the studios and facilities.” Whilst studying at MAINZ, Claude met Greg Haver, who came and gave guest lectures. A producer who is heavily involved in the local music industry, Greg runs the NZ Music Producers’ Series. Claude was lucky enough to attend in 2016 and 2017, where he met and learnt from several great producers from the UK – gaining the support and guidance to make the jump to living in the UK. Claude is currently working as an Assistant Engineer at Miloco Studios, a studio management company based in London, with studios worldwide. “Without the knowledge I got at MAINZ, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today,” he says. Whether students study in Christchurch or Auckland, they will be joining a community of like-minded people, dedicated to music and the music industry. Get the best start at MAINZ. Enrol today.

Facilities SAE Institute rests its teaching strategy on personalised, practical learning. There are no large lecture halls at SAE; rather students learn in top-of-the-range studios with equipment that parallels industry standards. Studio A includes the Audient ASP8024 console and 24-track Otari tape machine – equipment that is still in use and much prized throughout studios nationwide. An extensive array of high-quality outboard effects and processors help instil a greater insight into how each part of the studio functions while providing a more tactile working environment than plug-ins allow. Studio B boasts an impressive array of plugins in a powerful Mac Pro with a ProTools HD set up. Total control of every aspect of the mix is afforded through the revolutionary AVID S6 modular control surface, allowing every setting to be saved at the touch of a button. Studio C features a simple, easy to use control room setup with a powerful computer and interface, several pieces of outboard equipment and a Focal monitoring system. Connects to the Studio B live room. Studio D is our purpose-built audio post production studio, with a Mac Pro computer system using interactive Euphonix control surfaces, ProTools and Logic Pro and Ableton Live software and a high quality 5.1 channel ADAM Audio monitoring environment. Studio E features meticulously designed acoustics for critical monitoring of recordings, a key requirement of the mastering process. The suite is based around a powerful Mac Pro running Steinberg’s Wavelab, featuring UAD hardware and plugins, and a comprehensive monitoring system consisting of top-of-theline speakers by B&W and Genelec, as well as the famous FM radio-simulating Auratones.

Computer Labs across the campus contain around 50 digital workstations packed with applications including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Microsoft Office and more, allowing students to take their projects out of the studio and continue working on any computer available to them. The ease of access provided by this large number of workstations means students have a place to complete assignment work, research, revise and relax with fellow students, and don’t require their own computer and software licenses in order to complete their programme of study. Access is provided to both internal and external library databases as well as a host of additional resources to aid study. Film Studio is a large shooting space with green screen and a professional lighting setup. Equipment includes a variety of industry level cameras, lighting and grip equipment for hire. UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO DUNEDIN

SOUTHERN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (SIT) INVERCARGILL

Studying music at Otago means building a broad and diverse array of skills. Our students learn to write, perform, produce and analyse music, studying towards a range of qualifications in state-of-the-art facilities. • Performance pathways within the Bachelor of Music qualification include: Vocals, Musical Thetare Voice, Guitar, Keyboards, Bass Guitar, Drums, Wind, Brass, Violin, Cello, Classical Voice, Piano, Piping, Scottish Drumming, and many more. • Music Production courses offer an opportunity to learn to record and produce music to create original and future-focused projects and asking questions about the nature of performance, recording, and music production. • Composition and songwriting courses provide skills in lyric writing, song structure and compositional techniques. • The Bachelor of Performing Arts gives students an opportunity to specialise or combine a variety of art forms into one degree. • The music programme includes a range of courses covering history, culture, theory and analysis. Students will be learning and making music in architecturally designed, state-ofthe-art studios and performance spaces in the new School of Performing Arts purpose-built $26M facilities.

Study towards a career in music with the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT). Providing just the right mix of practical skills and music theory, SIT offers a wide range of contemporary music programmes and audio production qualifications. Students can perform at weekly concerts and organised tours, enabling the development of high-level performance skills. They benefit from one-on-one lessons and performance workshops. Students also have access to world-class recording equipment and recording studios at SIT Sound. The collaborative opportunities between music and audio production students provide future business networks, and of course, great friendships! In addition, SIT is the only institute in NZ where students can complete a double degree in music and audio in just 4 years. Music and audio student Jesse Brand chose to study at SIT because of its high reputation. “I chose SIT because I had spent time in Southland and met many music and audio students who spoke highly of the course. I once had a tour of the recording facilities and had attended the schools’ Friday public concerts over the years and knew the program was of high calibre, and well respected.” In contrast to his experience studying at other institutions, Jesse loved the supportive environment at SIT and the dedication of the staff. “The tutors are genuinely interested in the students as individuals, often going out of their way to help outside of class. The students too seem far more supportive of one another, working together towards a common goal.” Audio Production degree graduate Anthony Scadden is now a Production Manager, a position he attests to his SIT qualification. “I chose SIT Audio as I was told that it had the best tutors and facilities out of any audio production course in Aotearoa.” Having no prior expectations of SIT, Anthony says the course was brilliant. He enjoyed the hands-on learning, mixed with the technical knowledge of all the tutors. “And the Byron Bay experience goes without saying! It was a great way to engage in a larger scale, semi-professional working environment,” says Anthony. “All the knowledge I had learned prior to going over was put to good use, and expanded upon greatly without being too overwhelming.” Studying at SIT also gave Anthony a more analytical mind-set, he says. “Learning proper research methods and essay writing, has greatly improved the way I view self-learning things for my career nowadays. I feel it made me understand more fully, mathematical and scientific concepts that I had struggled to grasp in high school.” Anthony made some really close friends that he has kept in touch with, through the close bonds the Bachelor of Audio Production has with the Bachelor of Contemporary music. He also praises the excellent support network that was provided by tutors and peers. “I never felt like I was on my own, as my tutors were incredibly receptive to any questions I might have had.’’ For more information about study options in either music or audio production, visit www. sit.ac.nz
